Get realistic Android Wear watch faces with Weareal

There are a lot of really cool Android Wear watch faces to choose from. However, the vast majority of them have a distinct… artificial feel to them. Without the physical hands and the metallic sheen that we see on real luxury watches, even the fanciest faces strike the eye as unnatural. That’s what’s interesting about Weareal.

Weareal has created a line of smartwatch faces that aim to give the reader an authentic, mechanical aesthetic. Their faces take into consideration the movement of your wrist to dynamically adjust how “light” is falling on the rendered watch face. The result is impressively convincing under normal lighting conditions, with reflections and shadows dipping and spinning as they would on a watch composed from the materials these faces seek to emulate.

There are a handful of different aesthetics to choose from. The “Rider” line has a distinctly vehicular feel to it, with micro-gauges indicating the internal temp, battery, and day of the week. “Golder” is a simpler minimalist design with a more decadent tone, and “Acute” offers a no-nonsense appearance of high-quality metal that doesn’t have to flaunt it. The newest line, “Airpower,” takes things in the opposite direction with complex arrays of inset gears and cogs ticking and spinning.

Weareal faces are available for round and square Android Wear devices. The developers claim that these fancy faces only consume an additional 3% battery when compared to less flashy alternatives, making them relatively battery-friendly. The smartphone app lets you play with different designs before you commit to one, kind of a virtual storefront.

What do you think of Weareal’s real-feeling Android Wear faces? Clever gimmick or a genuinely stylish alternative to what’s already out there? Let us know in the comments below, and don’t forget to click that button to give Weareal a spin on your own!

Samsung may bring all of its apps to iOS this year

Apple-iPhone-6

According to SamMobile, Samsung could release all of its apps on Apple’s platform before the end of the year, also said to be working on a Gear Fit Manager for iOS.

The intriguing report from the tech website notes that Samsung could potentially go a step further and release ‘all’ of its apps on iOS, following the group’s decision to bring iOS support to the Gear S2.

SamMobile’s Asif S. writes that sources have revealed Samsung is working on a Gear Fit Manager for iOS, which will allow Gear owners to pair the gadget with an iPhone. The smartphone group is also said to be planning an iOS release for the S Health app for iPhone, plus the Remote Control and Family Square apps.

It doesn’t end there, as SamMobile also reports that the Level app for Level audio devices is taking a journey to the world of Apple too. Sources have lifted the lift on Samsung’s home entertainment plans, adding that the company is bringing iOS support to the Galaxy View tablet.

Other projects mentioned by SamMobile’s sources include Samsung’s progress on an updated build of the Smart Camera app for iOS, which could potentially bring a fully-redesigned UI with it.

If the rumours are true, it’ll certainly be interesting to see how Samsung’s app lineup is received on iOS.

AT&T debuts NumberSync on the Samsung Gear S2

When the Samsung Gear S2 debuted, it was met with a fair mix of criticism and praise. Most of its criticism stemmed from its use of Samsung’s homegrown OS, Tizen, instead of Android wear. Much of the praise came from 3G connectivity being available, as it’s one of the only smart watches capable of make and receiving calls independent of your phone.

AT&T and Samsung recently took it a step further when they announced a new service called NumberSync. NumberSync allows you to send and receive text messages as well as make and receive phone calls on your Gear S2 using the same phone number as your Android phone.

The calls and text messages are sent independently of the Bluetooth connection and instead use AT&T’s cellular network. You can even leave your phone at home as long as you bring your Gear S2 with you. Both devices will share a common voicemail inbox.

NumberSync is available today with a software upgrade for the Gear S2 and for a limited time you can purchase the Gear S2 for $99 on a two-year contract. What do you think? Can you see yourself rocking the Gear S2? Let us know in the comments below.

Fossil Q Founder review: Maybe next time

I’m a big fan of Fossil watches. In fact, the last time I wore a watch prior to Android Wear, I had a pair of Fossil models that I alternated between. Suffice it to say, I was extremely excited to learn that Fossil would be getting into the smartwatch space. And not just a smart fitness band or activity tracker, but Android Wear at that! The concept of Android wear inside of a solidly built watch simply fascinated me. I could no wait to get my hands on one of these.

q_founder_kaleidoscope

Backing up for a moment, this is not to suggest that other smart watches are not designed with quality components or put together with fine craftsmanship. Rather, I was looking forward to something that came from a watch brand first. To date we’ve only had smartphone makers getting into the space and trying their hands at a wearable. This, the Fossil Q Founder, would be the opposite. How does Fossil fare with its first Android Wear unit, the Q Founder?

First Impressions

Upon first removing the watch from its box I was immediately impressed with the hardware. I felt the weight of the watch and was reminded of my other Fossil watches. If you’ve never had one of these or worn one, they are heavy. And, being this is a 46mm watch, it’s big, too. Indeed, it’s a large display that feels very manly.

There is some serious weight to the Fossil Q Founder and it’s exactly what I wanted. Moreover, from the side and other angles, it looked exactly like you would expect from Fossil. On all outward appearances it mimics the look of standard Fossil models you’ll find department stores and jewelers.

‘Tilt’ is a new augmented reality game for Android Wear smartwatches

tilt-app-logo

A new augmented reality game for Android Wear recently launched. Developer 13 App Design calls the app Tilt and bills it as “the first of its kind augmented reality app for Android Wear smartwatches.”

To play, users view their Android Wear watch through their phone to display the game. Once the game is displayed, users tilt their smartwatch up and down and side to side to roll the sphere in order to pick up boxes without falling off.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Tilt is ad free and has no in-app purchases. It’s also worth noting that the game, in its current state, is a proof of concept, demoing the possibilities of augmented reality on Android Wear smartwatches.

The app’s description says an expanded version with more levels and features will be released, but does not say when.

Images of folding Google Glass Enterprise Edition spotted

Google-Glass-Enterprise-FCC01

Pictures of a new, folding Google Glass have surfaced online, revealing a fresh design that makes this edition of the wearable more portable than ever before.

Documents listed on the FCC website show the upcoming wearable in all its glory, and although the gadget looks reasonably similar to previous builds, this version arrives with a hinge so it can be tucked into your pocket. Meanwhile, rumours that the device will be unveiled ‘in a matter of weeks’ seem to be gathering momentum.

Dubbed Enterprise Edition, Google’s shiny gizmo features an Intel Atom processor, improved battery life, better ‘wireless connectivity’ and a larger display prism, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Improved hardware means the Google Glass Enterprise Edition is better equipped to take bumps and hits through regular use. Other changes have been made to position of the power button and a front light now comes on when the camera is in use.

Whilst a gallery of snaps of the new Google Glass is easily accessible online, we’re yet to hear official word from Google about the device.

Writing for The Information last month, reporter Jessica E. Lessin mentioned Google’s Project Aura team is working on ‘a wearable with a screen’ and ‘at least one without’.

She added:

“People tell us there have been three versions of the head-mounted device in development, although the three may be consolidated into two. One version, targeted at enterprises, has a screen. The others, one of which is targeted at “sport” users, doesn’t and relies on audio.”

We’re yet to spot images of the supposed Google-built external battery that connects via magnets, but we’ll keep you updated as the news comes in. Sources speaking to 9to5Google understand that the Google Glass Enterprise Edition will be distributed to Glass for Work companies first.

What are your thoughts on this latest version of Google Glass? We’d love to hear your opinions on the new, portable design.

Huawei will unveil a women’s Huawei Watch at CES

women Huawei watch

Huawei makes one of the nicest looking Android Wear watches to date, however, just like most smartwatches, it’s probably a little big for your wrist if you are a women. For that reason, Huawei is rumoured to unveil a women’s version at CES 2016.

The women’s watches will feature similar functionality to the standard version, with only visual changes. Featuring more feminine-looking bands, and stylized watch cases. We would assume Huawei will also be making some new watch faces to match the new watch designs.

Also, it is said Huawei is already working on a second generation normal Huawei Watch, with plans to launch it in the second half of next year. Some other rumours we are hearing is it may feature cellular capabilities.
