MyFord Mobile now lets you check up on your electric vehicle with Android Wear

MyFord Mobile

Ford has just released an update to its MyFord Mobile application for Android that brings support for Android Wear smartwatches. This means owners can now check their battery charge level, determine driving range before a trip, and even locate where their vehicle is parked – all from their wrists.

Designed by Ford engineers with both round and square watches in mind, the app works with Ford electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Specifically, the app is geared towards owners of the Ford C-MAX Energi, Ford Focus Electric and Ford Fusion Energi. The Android Wear version of the app was built to compliment the smartphone version, which launched on Android back in 2012. In addition to the features listed above, here are some other things you’ll be able to accomplish from your wrist:

  • Range and charge status for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
  • Capability to initiate preconditioning of vehicle cabin remotel
  • Locking/unlocking capability
  • Vehicle mileage summary
  • Last trip summary includes personal driving score, percentage of electric vehicle miles
  • Vehicle location provides walking or driving directions back to your parked car

Also included in this big update is support for pinch/zoom functionality in Google Maps within the smartphone version of the app, which will help to better provide availability of nearby charging stations.

To get a better look at what this app can do with Android Wear, check out the promotional video below.

The update is now live in the Google Play Store. If you’re the owner of one of the vehicles listed above, follow the link below for the download.

Let’s take a first look at the Huawei Watch

Earlier today, a package arrived. Within this package, there was another box. Within this box, held the newly-announced Huawei Watch. Now we aren’t here to give everyone a full review, since we just got our hands on it, but we figured it would be nice to share the fun with everyone. Huawei Watch 1

Huawei has really focused on design when it comes to their new smartwatch. While the watch itself is gorgeous, the packaging itself, is just as beautiful. Normally, you see manufacturers skimp out on the packaging because the real beauty is within, but it’s obvious that Huawei wanted to make the entire unboxing experience as gorgeous as the watch.

Huawei Watch 7
Huawei Watch 3
Huawei Watch 5
Huawei Watch 6
Huawei Watch Charger

Included within the box is the Huawei Watch, wall-charger, wireless charging hub, and the instruction manual. But as for the box itself, the outer portion is just cardboard with the logo, name, and a label with Android Wear on it. The inner box, which houses the Huawei Watch holds the rest of the goodies, and is made out of a leather material to give the whole experience a premium-feel.

Keep your eyes peeled for more coverage on the Huawei Watch, as well as the upcoming review. In the mean time, drop us a line and let us know what you would like to know about this device, or what you would like to see covered in the review.

Moto X Style and Moto 360 (2015) are now available to pre-order in the UK

motorola_moto_360_2015_launch_mens_sizes_TA

The Moto X Play has been available to buy in the UK for a couple of weeks now, but readers who have waited to get their hands on Motorola’s Moto X Style and Moto 36 (2015) can rejoice! You can now pre-order your preferred device directly from Motorola’s online store in the UK.

The 32GB Moto X Style can be pre-ordered for £399, providing you don’t choose to add a custom wood or leather rear panel via Moto Maker which bill bump the price up another £20. For another £35 you can snag the 64GB version, which is quite reasonable. Unlike some handset manufacturers (I won’t mention Samsung or Apple), Motorola isn’t ripping people off for an extra 32GB of storage and you can still add up to another 128GB to that by inserting a MicroSD card. At present, delivery is estimated around October 8th, so there’s still a couple of weeks to wait. Click here to pre-order your Moto X Style.

The Moto 360 (2015) is also available to pre-order directly from Motorola’s online shop from £229 by clicking here. The Moto 360 Sport isn’t available to pre-order just yet, although you can register for updates.

  • £229 – Moto 360 2015 (Men’s small – 42mm) estimated delivery date of September 28
  • £269 – Moto 360 2015 (Men’s large – 46mm) estimated delivery date of September  29
  • £259 – Moto 360 2015 (Women’s  – 42mm) estimated delivery date of September 23

Are you thinking of springing for the Moto 360 (2015) or Moto X Style? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch coming to carriers on October 2nd

We’re hot off the reveal of the Gear S2, Samsung’s newest smartwatch, at IFA 2015 in Berlin. The new offering from Samsung is not an Android Wear offering but rather runs on Samsung’s own OS, Tizen. Even though that’s a bit of a disappointment, it will still work with your Android phone. Many are lauding it for it’s great looks and wondering when they can get their hands on it.

We may have just gotten our first piece solid info.

In a Samsung Electronics America (SEA) training video, October 2nd is the release date given for the Gear S2. At about the one hour and 55 minute mark of the video, the presenter reveals that the bluetooth only version of the new Samsung smartwatch will be coming to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular on October 2nd. Sprint is not mentioned as one of the carriers offering the watch and it’s not stated whether the country’s fourth biggest carrier will pick it up later.

If you want the 3G variant of the Gear S2, you’ll be able to pick it up about a month later, on November 6th, but no details were given as to which carriers will offer it for sale. T-Mobile and Verizon have perviously stated that they’ll sell it but have not confirmed when they plan to do so nor how much it will cost.

Motorola brings its Moto Body fitness tracking application to the Play Store

moto 360 ifa aa (3 of 18)

Last November, Motorola launched a fitness application called Moto Body that gave Moto 360 owners some handy fitness tracking information on their wrists. Even though the app could deliver users a daily step count and some basic calorie information, there was no way to view this information on a smartphone. Now Motorola has released Moto Body to the Play Store, bringing more detailed activity information and more to the fitness app.

Moto Body will allow users to track daily, weekly, monthly and yearly fitness activity, Heart Activity, along with step counts, calorie burn data and more. It will even give you personalized insights, tips and helpful articles to help you improve on your goals. Compared to the smartwatch-only version of the app, the new Moto Body offers up enhanced heart rate sensing capabilities, a new dashboard that provides daily and weekly data and a more robust Moto Body profile setup process.

When it comes to fitness applications, users don’t want to just see daily statistics. It’s extremely helpful to be able to access fitness history and other stats, and now Moto Body can do that for you. Take a look at the screenshots below for a better look at the app:

This week’s Android Apps Weekly is sponsored by Daily Calculator Free. This application was designed to look good and be easy to use, all of which it does extremely well. You can even enable and disable memory buttons, change the keypad layout, and change the display format. It’s easy to use and it’s totally free with no in-app purchases or you can get the ad-free version for $0.99. Give it a shot and show your support for the Android Apps Weekly show!

Welcome back to Android Apps Weekly! Here are your headlines from the last week:

  • Google announced earlier this week that the minimum price for an application in India has gone down. Originally, the price was set to 50 rupees and that has now dropped to 10 rupees. This will allow app devs to sell their application for less money and, hopefully, encourage people to buy more apps.
  • In an unusually stupid move, Pandora will being offering a one-day pass of ad-free listening for $0.99. This adds up to about $30 per month and at that point, you might as well just use Spotify, or Google Play Music, or, you know, anything else. We don’t foresee this being too big of a deal although you never know with how people spend money these days.
  • Earlier this week, Ironhide Game Studio, developers of the famed Kingdom Rush franchise, announced on Twitter that their first Kingdom Rush game is now free (with in-app purchases) and will remain that way. Even if it’s old, it’s still a solid little tower defense game and worth checking out.
  • A new Humble Bundle is out now and includes such games as One More Line, Toy Defense, the Double Dragon Trilogy, and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. You can get all of these games for the average price of just over $4 which is far less than you’d pay normally and this is a great way to give to charity!
  • Last up this week, it was announced that YouTube has found a way around AdBlock. In a hilarious twist, users of AdBlock and similar apps go from not having to see ads to not being able to skip them unless they disable AdBlock. Users are understandably pissed and I’m sure the comment section will reflect that.

For even more Android apps and games headlines, updates, and new releases, don’t forget to check out this week’s newsletter! There you’ll find the complete list of stuff that happened this week, including the stuff we didn’t have time for here. If you’re so inclined, you can sign up for the newsletter using your email address and we’ll send it straight to your inbox every single Friday!

you sunk for android wear Android Apps WeeklyYou Sunk for Android Wear

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
You Sunk for Android Wear is, as you’d imagine, a game for Android Wear. In this simple game, you’re tasked with sinking all of the enemy battleships using a variety of weapons. The game can be played on either a phone or an Android Wear watch but it seems to be a little more fun on the watch. There are also power ups, different time settings, and even nukes if you want them. It’s free to download but do beware of the release day bugs.

virustotal uplink Android Apps WeeklyVirusTotal Uplink

[Price: Free]
VirusTotal Uplink is a newer antivirus application and virus scanner that scans your files and apps on command or you can have it run in the background. It’s well designed and comes with a very small footprint at 1.4MB. I know a lot of people don’t use antivirus apps and that’s okay but this seems to be something worth trying for those who do use Android antivirus applications. It is totally free with no in-app purchases

kill me again Android Apps WeeklyKill Me Again: Infectors

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Kill Me Again: Infectors is a match-3 puzzle game with some fighting game elements mixed in. Unlike most puzzle games that use these mechanics, this one actually kind of has a story line. It is a zombie game where you must survive in a world run by zombies but the cinematic graphics are pretty decent, the mechanics are solid, and it’s actually a pretty fun little time waster. It’s also free to download if you’re interested but again, watch out for those early bugs.

adblock browser Android Apps WeeklyAdblock Browser for Android

[Price: Free]
In an amusing bit of irony, the Adblock Browser was released earlier this week. In terms of pure browsing power, the Adblock Browser isn’t all that special. It does the basic browser stuff without a lot of bells and whistles. Obviously the main focus of this application is to block advertising and that is something that it does well. It’s worth a try if ad-blocking is something that’s important to you. As with most new apps, there are also a few bugs out of the gate.
Get it now on Google Play!

google wallet Android Apps WeeklyThe new Google Wallet

[Price: Free]
In anticipation for the upcoming Android Pay rollout, Google has taken the Google Wallet functionality and put it in its own application. With this app you’ll be able to view your balance, manage your Google Wallet card if you have one, send and receive money, and a lot more. It’s essentially what the current Google Wallet app did except this one doesn’t do tap-to-pay transactions. If you use any of these features, you’ll want this app because we imagine that it’ll be leaving the current Google Wallet app once it turns into Android Pay.
