Android 5.1.1 OTA links for Android One are here

Android One Philippines Cherry One MyPhone Uno

Android 5.1.1 may have only been released to the Nexus devices a few weeks ago but Google is already rolling the update out to non-Nexus smartphones. We’ve already given you the Android 5.1.1 OTA links for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 4 and now, the update is available for a range of Google’s Android One devices.

When Android One first made its debut, one of the biggest promises was that it would provide timely access to newer versions of Android, as Google itself controls software updates for the devices. Rather than leave the development of software to OEM partners, Android One brings stock Android and a software release program that allows Google to roll out the latest versions of Android quickly.

Android One may have been delayed in finally jumping from KitKat to Lollipop but Google isn’t stopping there and thanks to a tip, we have now gathered up the OTA Build links for the following Android One devices:

Like all images, installing these updates is something you do at your own risk but the process is relatively easy. First, place the zip file on your Android One device, then boot into recovery, select the zip file and flash it to your device. The update will install, your phone will reboot and it’s ready to use. If you’d rather wait for it to show up on your device, you can wait for a prompt or manually check for it by going into Settings > About Phone > System Updates.

The Android 5.1.1 is mainly a bug-fix update, bringing solutions to a range of user-reported problems, including the Nexus 5 camera issues that affected some users after the original Android 5.1 update. As always, Google hasn’t published a changelog but the update may also include the long-awaited fix for the memory leak issues that have affected devices running on Lollipop.

While Google itself hasn’t added new features to Android 5.1.1 for stock Android devices – like Android One devices – other OEMs have used the update to add new features to their respective devices. The update leaked for the Galaxy S6 a few days ago and the biggest changes are the ability to shoot pictures in RAW, manual exposure and user interface tweaks.

Have you installed Android 5.1.1 on your Android One device? What improvements, fixes or new features have you found? Let us know your views guys!

Google is making it easier for Android One users to overcome connectivity and data challenges

Google IO 2015 offline support

Google is looking ahead at its annual developer conference, talking about bringing the internet to the next billion people. The company plans on doing this by utilizing its low-cost smartphone platform, Android One. Android One was introduced last year in India with three OEM partners, and that number has since grown to seven countries with more than ten OEM partners. Of course, Google’s plans for Android One don’t stop there.

The problem is, although folks in developing markets may have access to Android One devices, there are still many connectivity challenges and data costs to overcome. It can even sometimes take a few minutes to load up a simple webpage or a map. To combat these problems, Google is looking to focus on speed, size and connectivity to deliver the best experience to users, no matter where they live.

Google IO 2015 optimized light search

Starting in Indonesia, Google is rolling out a “light” search results page for users on slow connections. These optimized web pages will be able to load 4x faster, use 80% fewer bytes, and reduce memory usage by up to 80MB.

Google is also rolling out a “Network Quality Indicator” for Chrome in India, which evaluates the quality of the data connection you’re on, and will respond to lower bandwidths to adjust the quality of the webpage. For instance, if users have a slower data connection, the webpage will insert image placeholders instead of taking time to load each individual image. The company is also working to bring offline capabilities in Chrome on Android.

Google IO 2015 youtube offline

Google has also recently launched “YouTube Offline” in nations such as Indonesia, which allows users to take videos offline for up to 48 hours at a time.

We’ll have more information on Android One in the next few hours, so stay tuned!

Android One: now in Turkey

Android One’s entry into Turkey marks the expansion of the initiative to a continent other than Asia for the first time. Overall, Turkey is the seventh market to be supported by the program. Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka are the others.

According to 9to5Google, General Mobile will be the first in the country to carry Android One smartphones, but they will come at a higher cost. It has received word from Re/code that these devices will cost about $260, which is more than twice as much for Google’s target price for hardware.

Nevertheless, Android One devices will cost around a fourth of the price of flagships, and they have the benefit of receiving OS updates for up to two years.

Android One heads to Turkey with a decent launch device

android_one_turkey_general_mobile_4g

The reach of Android One continues to grow as Turkey becomes the seventh country to welcome Google’s entry-level hardware platform. The first Android One device for Turkey comes from General Mobile and features decent specifications.

It has a 5-inch, high definition display and under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB of RAM. Normally, we would see an Android One device use a processor from MediaTek. The cameras do not lack at all either. The front-facing lens is 5MP while the rear camera is 13MP. Oh, it also supports 4G LTE. General Mobile’s offering is leaps and bound better than other Android One devices in almost every area.

Second-gen Android One hitting Turkey with souped-up specs and a significant price hike

Android One turkey general mobile

Android One devices are coming to Turkey, with a twist. While Google and its local partners offer Android One phones in India and other Asian countries for around $110, the first Turkish model features better specs and a $260 price tag.

The first Turkish Android One phone is made by General Mobile and its specs include a 5-inch HD display with Gorilla Glass 4, a Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera and LTE. The device is running Android 5.1.1 and is guaranteed to receive Android updates for two years.

The General Mobile Android One phone is a marked improvement over the first-gen Android Ones released late last year in India. Those came with a 480 x 854 4.5-inch display, MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 5MP main camera.

The General Mobile Android One will be available from May 15 for 699 Turkish lira, which is about $260, through retailer Telpa.

Turkey is more affluent than the markets in Southeast Asia where Google has introduced Android One so far, and the superior specs of the General Mobile Android One are probably an adaptation to the higher standards of local phone buyers. That reflects in the price tag, though higher tariffs on electronics could also play a role. A Galaxy S6, for instance, starts from the equivalent of $930 unlocked at Turkish retailers.

Turkey is the seventh country where Google rolls out Android One, after India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

How do you feel about these specs and price for an Android One device?

Google’s Android One program hasn’t had a major impact on emerging markets

Android_one-announcementGoogle initially launched their ambitious Android One program to get low cost devices in the hands of as many people as possible in emerging markets, all while securing the smartphone and tablet market with Google services. Unfortunately, it looks like Android One hasn’t quite gotten the results Google was expecting.

Android One definitely hasn’t been a failure, but devices shipped by local manufacturers haven’t really caught fire as far as sales go. Among those manufacturers, and some of the bigger OEMs that jumped on board with low-cost program, interest has dipped quite a bit from when it was announced.

Android One launched right on the cusp of device prices falling out. Google wanted to introduce tons of devices that were easily purchased for less than $100 without any kinds of contracts, but it’s not tough to find quality sub-$100 devices from other devices anymore. While Android One devices are much more likely to stay updated, that’s not a big enough selling point for many customers.

Even if Android One numbers aren’t doing exceptionally well, the program does fit into Google’s bigger plan to get as many as people as possible connected to the internet and, hopefully, using Google services and seeing Google-served ads. It’ll be interesting to see how much attention Google gives Android One going forward, though.

Micromax Canvas A1 now getting the Android 5.1 update

canvasa1android5.1

Indian manufacturer Micromax has just announced that the Canvas A1 smartphone will now start receiving the Android 5.1 update. This is no surprise given that this belongs to Google’s Android One series of smartphones, which were promised Nexus like software updates.

We saw some Android One phones in Indonesia launching with Android 5.1 out of the box, so it’s no surprise that fellow Android One devices are getting similar treatment. The Spice Dream Uno, which is also an Android One device, started receiving the update not too long ago.

This update is quite significant for users of the Canvas A1 as the device was running Android 4.4 since its launch in mid 2014. This means the customers will see Material Design changes as well as a new lock screen, improved Quick Settings toggles and some other improvements to stock Android.

Android One users can download the Android 5.1 OTA links here

android-one-program

When the Android One program first debuted, one of the biggest promises was the timely update to newer versions of Android, something that is lacking in many of the budget handsets found in emerging markets. Despite this promise, Android One users have been stuck with KitKat for months now. As it turns out, Google was waiting for Android 5.1 before updating the current crop of Android One devices to its latest sweet treat.

The 5.1 update first arrived out of the box for Android One devices shipping in Indonesia, and now the OTA is starting to hit existing Kitkat-based Android One devices as well. Thanks to a new tip, we now have gathered up the OTA Build LMY470 links for the following Android One handsets:

While installing these updates is something you should do at your own risk, the process is generally pretty easy. You start by placing the zip on your Android One device, and then boot into recovery (stock or custom), select the zip and flash it. The update will install, the phone will reboot — and that’s about it.

Anyone get the update for your Android One handset yet? If so, what do you think of the changes so far? Noticeably better performance?

Google officially talks about Android 5.1 Lollipop

Android 5.1 Lollipop updates have been making appearance in various places, like on Android One devices. Lollipop gradually rolling out to Android One phones in India

android one indonesia

After a period of radio silence and a bit of a delay, Android Lollipop finally made an appearance on Android One devices in Indonesia, in fact the region is the first to receive Android 5.1. Android One’s biggest market, India, has been left waiting even longer for the sought after update, but that changes this week.

As promised a couple of weeks ago, Caesar Sengupta, Product Management Director at Google has announced that Lollipop has already begun to arrive on Android One handsets in India, but everyone won’t receive it at the same time.

Instead, Lollipop will be rolled out to Indian One handsets on a weekly basis, with random devices receiving an OTA update notification purely by chance. Bizarrely, apparently being connected to a WiFi network increases your odds of winning the Lollipop lottery, presumable as the update is quite large.

This rather unique update process will allow for Google to check for bugs as the update rolls out, as well as saving the servers from severe stress. Google hasn’t announced whether this update will be the same Android 5.1 version which landed the other week or if India will receive an earlier 5.0 build, but we can probably assume that it’s the former.

Have you been lucky enough to receive a Lollipop update on your Android One smartphone?
