Google names Marshmallow as the official treat for Android 6.0

android_marshmallow_large

At Google I/O 2015, Android M was introduced to the world. The software has been available in the form of a developer preview so that the team behind Android can work out any issues before launch later this year, but among the only things unknown about Android M were its version number and name. Would it be Android 5.5 or 6.0? Would it be called Milkshake or Marshmallow? Today, Google debuted Android M’s official version number and name.

The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system will be known as Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Coinciding with the reveal of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the arrival of the developer preview’s final edition. Developers are now able to use the official Android 6.0 SDK to create apps that are designed specifically for the twenty-third API level in Marshmallow. This allows developers to take advantage of Android’s new permissions that include dedicated fingerprint support and the new Doze power saving mode.

A release date for Marshmallow was not specified by Google; however, the company does say that a “consumer launch” is coming this fall.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is official, Google posts up final preview

marsh

Last Friday Google released a video asking “what’s M going to be?”, while teasing us over Android M’s final candy-themed naming convention choices. The arrival of the video had us hoping that a big unveil might be sooner than we think. This morning things heated up further, as Google’s official G+ account put up a new teaser saying “Guess who’s excited for the arrival of Android M?”, and a Google employee by the name of Jeff Sharkey has also posted a photo on Google+ of what appears to be the latest Android statue on the Google Campus — conveniently covered up by a big tarp. The only text in the post is “Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?”

Now it’s official! Android M is Android Marshmallow! Even more intriguing, it appears Google is going with Android 6.0 for the version number. Google has taken to its developer’s blog to announce the final Android 6.0 Marshmallow preview, giving developers a final opportunity to get their apps ready for Marshmallow. As for when the final release and new Nexus devices will release? No details just yet.

We’re still sorting through the announcement details and we’ll be sure to update you as we learn more. Can’t say we are too surprised by the name choice, though bumping it up to 6.0 is a bit more surprising. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Samsung shows off how Android M will impact their devices

Samsung seems pretty excited for the release of Android M. As they should be. Android M is adding a slew of new features that will improve just about every flagship device in some way. Samsung has created an info-graphic, which describes exactly what Android M will do for their various devices.

Unsurprisingly, although Android M will bring native microSD support, Samsung has left this little tidbit off of their info-graphic. Although reports and pictures have come through showing off a microSD card slot for the International version of the Galaxy Note 5, it seems that will be the only device with that support. This leaves the rest of Samsung’s arsenal of new devices without any expandable storage, instead, opting for the Apple route of making users pay if they need/want more internal storage.androidm-infographic

Regardless of that, it’s pretty nice to see Samsung make something like this to show off how Android M will affect their devices going forward. Would you like to see more manufacturers doing this kind of thing. Sound off in the comments below.

[Infographic] Samsung highlights the Android M features it will bring to its devices

Samsung_Android_M-Infographic (2)

The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphones were announced last week to varying degrees of excitement, depending on if the device you want is launching in your region. Not everyone wants to upgrade to a new handset, though, which means that many Samsung fans are wondering what new features the eventual Android M firmware update will bring to eligible devices.

With that in mind, Samsung has published a neat infographic that details the Android M features it will eventually bring to current devices. Features such as granular app permissions, memory track, quick fingerprint access, Auto App backup and power saving are mentioned.

Google teases Android M’s future moniker in new video

Android M has been in the Developer Preview stage ever since late May, but we are still left without the official name. This happened last year with the current version of Android, which is now Lollipop.

As we all know, Google gives their Android version number a coinciding dessert. Previously we have seen Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and KitKat to name a few. Now that Android M is nearing its official release, which is expected some time this month, Google put out a video hinting at what the M could stand for.

So, if Google’s timeline stays correct, we are only a matter of days away from the official name behind the M. What are your thoughts on it? I personally think it’s going to be Marshmallow.
