Motorola Nexus 6 spotted in the wild

nexus6_androidpolice

We recently published a gallery of photos for the upcoming Motorola Nexus 6; however, all of these were renders because there has not been a quality photo of the actual device itself. That is, until today. The team over at Android Police has received some photos from an anonymous tipster that claim to show someone using the Nexus 6 out in public.

Nexus 6 in the wild
Nexus 6 in the wild

There is a view from both the left and right side of the device. These pictures give us a good idea of how large this 5.9″ behemoth will be, and it does not appear to be that large. For such a large phone, the user seems to be handling it relatively easily with just one hand. Since there is nothing to compare the phone to, this does not mean that the Nexus 6 will be small as the user could just have very large hands. However, it does give us hope that Motorola has been able to squeeze a 5.9″ display into a reasonable form factor. Although the majority of the phone is obscured by a hand or the case, we can still compare some features to what we have seen in leaks. The headphone jack appears in the middle of the phone and the navigation buttons appear smaller which both line up with the earlier photos and renders. The power and volume buttons are also located at the middle of the phone which shows just how large this phone will be. The front-facing speakers are also visible in both photos. While there is no way to verify the device, all signs say that you are looking at the next Nexus 6 from Motorola. Hopefully we will see the entire phone sometime within the next month or so.

What do you think of these new pictures of the Nexus 6? Tell us in the comments!

Five day old Android L build LRW87D shows up with crash log and short video

Android L build LRW87DWe already know Android L is coming, and we have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to be called, but we can’t help but feel excited when we see more evidence of its existence pop up. This latest news comes to us courtesy of the Chromium issue tracker once again, which has spotted Android L build LRW87D, this time due to a crash log being posted, even being accompanied by a video of the app in question crashing. Check it out:

It’s not particularly long, or particularly special, but in the 20 seconds or so, you get to see a nice window transition and those now iconic soft keys at the bottom of the screen.

Android L build LRW87DThe build in question is said to have been running on a Hammerhead device, know to us as the Nexus 5, and the build number (LRW87D) suggests that the build is from the 25th of September, though it should be noted that dates of these builds can be notoriously inaccurate, though we’re sure to be looking at a pretty recent build here. We’re expecting Android L to make an appearance when Google announces its new Nexus devices, the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6, though when exactly that will happen is anybody’s guess.

What do you think about this latest Android L build? Are you excited for Android L? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Project Ara to run a modified version of Android L

project ara

Phonebloks began as a college project. It was an idea more than it ever was a business. It was an idea Phonebloks hoped would spread across the internet and someone would grab it and run with it. In the last year or so, the idea has spread, and now multiple companies are using this idea to drive their business. One of those companies is Google.

Project Ara took shape with the acquisition of Motorola. Motorola and Google took the idea of Phonebloks, a modular phone with swappable parts, from idea to concept. And even though Google is in the process of selling Motorola to Lenovo, they are keeping Project Ara in house.

We’ve already seen a glimpse of the future when Google showed off a concept phone at Google I/O earlier this year. It was rough around the edges, and was little more than a boot sequence, but it gave us a glimpse of the future. In that device, we saw a way to own one phone that we could upgrade and change with new modules. This reduces waste, and increases the functionality of our phones.

The latest news from Project Ara is that,

Project Ara will use a modified version of Android L, developed in collaboration with Linaro. Thanks to this version, the modules, except the CPU and the display, will be hot swappable. This means you can change them without turning the phone off. The modules will be available on a new online store, like Play store.

Yes, Google will monetize the crap out of Project Ara and make a ton of money by doing so. But, we are all used to that kind of thing. The main point here is the vision of this modular device becoming a reality; something we can buy, and use, in our daily life.

Check out the video below that shows how far Phonebloks has come in the last year. Don’t you just love videos of people’s dreams coming true?

Android Lollipop Hinted by Google?! Nexus 6 Sounds More Glorious! – ManDroid Daily

nexus-6-android-l-mandroid

The ManDroid Daily is here folks. Google might have hinted at the name Lollipop on their 16th anniversary cake. I think we can all agree that is a suitable name for the next version of Android. New Nexus 6 image came about in render form, with some added specs. Big phone means beautiful display. Enjoy the Daily!

Just waiting on Google; Nexus 6 all but confirmed at 5.9-inch QHD display

Seems the good ol’ people at Android Police are up to their usual amount of awesomeness as they have seemingly been confirmed a few things about the upcoming Nexus 6. Obviously the name being the Nexus 6 is the first and foremost point. That clears out Nexus X as a contender. It has also been apparently confirmed that the Nexus 6 will indeed be sporting a 5.9″ QHD display which makes for 496ppi.

To butter everyone up a little bit more, they have found out that the Nexus 6 will offer up dual front facing speakers, all blacked out so they aren’t an eye sore. As for cameras the device will sport a 2MP front shooter with a 13MP rear camera with the dual LED flashes placed on either side in the ring. It will be based off the new Moto X, so you can expect a larger variant with the same aluminum frame. The power and volume rocker buttons will be a bit lower so that you aren’t over extending your thumb to do simple controls.

Nexus 6

One confirmation that I am pretty amped up about is that the battery is supposed to be 3,200+ mAh. It should keep you going for a very, very long time. They also state that the device will be compatible with Motorola’s Turbo charging that has a claim of a 15 minute charge giving you an extra 8 hours of battery life.

Another thing you will see are some changes to the icons both on the homescreen and notifications. At least in their interpretation the WiFi and Signal bars are all solid without the breaks in them. Oh, and it is also been confirmed that Android L will in fact be Android 5.0.

Now, is there a smaller version too? It seems unlikely given that it isn’t leaking anywhere. Google could be hiding this one extremely well, or it just isn’t going to happen. That might get under your skin and be a little off-putting since the apparent Nexus 6 jumps about an inch from the Nexus 5. I am confident that once you get your hands on it and spend a few days alone in your room, you will find that 5.9-inches isn’t all that big after a while. We should have dates, prices and all the final details from Google pretty soon.

So, are you saddened by the news, or are you even more excited than before?

Interesting theory: Did Google out the name of its next build, Android Lollipop, in its birthday celebration?

Android LollipopFun fact: Google turned 16 years old yesterday. Other fun fact: A gif that Google posted on social media shows lollipops as the decoration on a birthday cake. Now, this next bit is going to be a bit of a stretch, but this is by no means beyond the subtle marketing of Google – could the lollipops on the top of the cake signify the name of the next build of Android, Android Lollipop? This was one of our earliest guesses for the name of Android L, even before we knew it as Android L, and it is at the very least plausible. Of course, it could equally be called layer cake, but we’d like to think there’s going to be a lollipop themed Android figurine on Google’s lawn in a month’s time. And yes, we know that’s a pretty indefensible reason.

As with every build of Android before it, everybody has been trying to guess the name of the next build of Android for the longest time, the most compelling theories of which have recently been Lemon Meringue Pie and Lion, the last courtesy of Google’s previous relationship with Nestle. Really, it’s anybody’s guess, so unless you’re into the whole business of speculation, you can probably afford to wait until an official announcement is made – Google is expected to announce a new tablet, the Nexus 9, and also a new phablet, the Nexus 6, come mid-October.

What do you think about this latest theory? Is it reading too deep into it, or is this totally something Google would do? Let us know your opinion.

Motorola Shamu gets spotted again, this time hiding in the dark but showing us its software details

Motorola Shamu

The Motorola Shamu – original image (left), enhanced image (right)

We’ve had some very good looks at what is allegedly the next Nexus device, the Motorola Shamu, or Nexus 6, of Nexus X, or whatever else you want to call it. We’ve had photos which compare the Shamu’s size versus the equally large LG G3 as well as what looks like press renders of the device. Today, we have another leak to share which allegedly comes from someone in possession of a Shamu and has taken a photo of it while presumably in the dark. The details on the screen tell quite a story – apart from the distinctive Android L soft keys at the bottom of the screen, the details confirm the Shamu is running Android L and the build it is running is from late August.

Unfortunately for the original poster, when the image is enhanced, it reveals the Motorola logo with a SnapTag arrangement, which is presumably unique for testers of the device and may have compromised their identity (it’s been blurred out where the black box is in the above image). Oversight aside, it’s seeming increasingly likely that this Motorola Shamu is definitely a Nexus device that will see its release in the next month or so, rumoured to be around October 15th or 16th.

What do you make of this latest leak? Is the Shamu a device you’re looking forward to? Let us know your opinion.

Report: New Nexus devices in October, Android L due in November

nexus x

Just a few days ago, WSJ reported that Google and HTC are working on a tablet together, reportedly Nexus 9, and Paul O’Brien also tweeted that it will be released on October 16. Now, we have some more confirmation from Android Authority on the tablet, and also they are talking about the rumored ‘Moto Nexus‘ as well, which will be the first ever Android L smartphone.

They agree with Paul on the release date of the Nexus 9, and also they further agree that Google will introduce Android L and a new Nexus hardware during mid October as well, but the final version of Android L won’t be officially available until November 1st. Well, that’s some confusion there. The source is unclear about it, because we don’t know whether it is the date when the new Nexus device will be sold or shipped. However, I am sure we will have some confirmation in near future.

One thing we know for sure is that Google got a few projects up their sleeves, and sooner or later, the cat will be out of the bag. What are you thoughts? Let us know in the comment box below.
