Android L Screenshot from Chromium Suggests ‘Lollipop’ is the Next Name in Android

lollipop-android-l

What is Android L going to be folks? We certainly have been tossing around the L dessert names for the past few months, and it is still quite up in the air on what Google is going to name it. We might finally have our answer though, as a new screenshot surfaced from the Chromium tracker suggesting the Lollipop is the winner in the Android L name game.

Google loves to place whatever icon of Android you are currently running your device in your status bar to indicate that you’re on debugging mode. The zoomed in illustration shows our beloved Andy in lollipop form, so I guess we can bump the lollipop name to the top of the list. Let us know your thoughts about this screenshot, and if you still think it will be another name.

Google teases Android L in latest YouTube video

Google_Logo_Visitors_47558

Google has just published a short, “Sweeeeet” video on its official YouTube channel teasing the release of the next big update of its mobile operating system. Although the specific dessert name is still tightly under wraps, the search engine giant did confirm that “L” will be “Android 5.0″ and gave us the names of a few contestants who auditioned for the role — Lemon Meringue Pie, Lava Cake, Lady Finger, Lemon Drop and Oreo. But, of course, they’re wasn’t a Lollipop in sight.

Hit the break below for the full teaser.

Casting for Android L teases us with “Sweeeeet” video and a table of treats

Today is National Dessert Day. Did you know that? I certainly didn’t. Sundar Pichai did and he tweeted out a video that just recently made its debut on the Android YouTube channel. The video isn’t anything spectacular, but it is a fun little audition waiting room style shoot that shows various people in various dessert costumes that all start with “L”.

Android L Casting

The curious video offers up titles like Lemon Meringue Pie, Lava Cake, Lady Finger and Lemon Drop. The next iteration of Android doesn’t have a publicly known name just yet. Through various leaks and chatter it would seem that Lollipop is most likely at this point. Google has been known to throw us curve balls in the past though. I can remember when Android “K” was supposed to be Key Lime Pie. There was a debugging icon, various videos and leaks that kept it Key Lime Pie in the spotlight. There was also chatter about Licorice early too. Anywho, we have no idea what Google will be calling the next Android version. We do know it will start with an L and it will be Android 5.0.

At the end of the video you see the poor Lady Finger guy chilling by the sweets table. On the table you will notice many treats. I see Eclairs, Gingerbread, Froyo, Ice Cream Sandwiches, a honeybee (Honeycomb), Jelly Beans, Kit Kat and some Easter eggs. Literally, a bowl of colored Easter Eggs.  Google is pretty clever. I don’t see Cupcakes or Donuts, which would round out the naming history of Android.

Treat table

There are some Lava Cakes and Lady Fingers between the Gingerbread men and Ice Cream Sandwiches. I assume a Lemon Meringue Pie is the type of pie in the back. I am not entirely sure what the bread like slices are here in the front right and the dough balls in the back (possibly donuts). What is that other cake like thing in front of the Eclairs? What I don’t see on the table are any Lollipops or Lemon drops.

The wait will soon be over as we are supposed to get an announcement tomorrow. So say the rumor mills of the internet. I know I will be watching and waiting. News of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Android L should be coming very soon.

Forbes: Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Android L due October 15

android

October should just be dubbed “Nexus month”, as even if Google doesn’t announce a new Nexus at the beginning of the month, the internet blows up with rumors, reports, leaks, and other news about them anyways, and once they do announce it, the rest of the month (or next few months) is spent looking at and analyzing any and everything Google announced.

Anyways, Forbes has reported that “a source close to Google” has confirmed that the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Android L will be announced tomorrow via a blog post. The writer said originally Google was going to make an event out of it, eventually opting for a web announcement because they’re still fine tuning Android L.

The Nexus 9 will be available for pre-order on October 17th, and available to purchase on November 3rd, they say this is subject to change. The 16 GB variant will cost $399, while a 32 GB LTE version will cost $499, and apparently they will have expandable memory, which I’m sure will be praised by Android enthusiasts.

He also confirms specs: 8.9-inch 2048×1440 display, 480 grams, a 64-bit dual-core processor, an Nvidia Kepler GPU and a 8MP rear-facing camera and 3MP front-facing camera. It will have a “brushed-aluminum” frame rather than an all metal design. It will also have HTC’s boomsound and front-facing speakers.

There will also be an “origami” case, which apparently can be folded however you’d like in order to stand up or prop up the device.

We reported on this date and various specs a few times before.

Earlier today we’ve had a few reports about the Nexus 6 as well, here and a report about the newest android campaign here.

I’m starting to be convinced that this is happening. At this point if there isn’t an announcement tomorrow, I’ll be disappointed… So, while we feel confident about all this, take it all with a grain of salt.

Are you ready for the next round of Nexus devices and Android?

New evidence supports Android L to be called ‘Lollipop’

lollipop_debug

You know those rumors that have been circulating this week suggesting Android L could be called Licorice when it’s launched? Heck, even the guy responsible for the giant lawn decorations has been chatting up the idea of licorice all week. As it turns out, that could all be smoke screen. Newly discovered bug tracking on Chromium (Chrome issue tracker) suggests the next version may be called Lollipop after all.

Check out the debug icon in the notification bar. As first reported by Myce, this guy sure looks like a standard lollipop with Android antennae. And, adding fuel to the fire, the page has since been removed from Chromium.

You know the drill; nothing is official until it’s official. Just more chatter for an otherwise slower news cycle.

Which do you prefer for Android? Lollipop, licorice, or something else? Hell, does it even matter to you?

Google developer posts Android L screenshot, hints at “Lollipop”

android_l_lollipop_issue_tracker

There is much speculation as to what Google will be calling Android L. Some of the possible names are Licorice, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lava Cake, and Lemon Drop. Today, the selected name has seemingly been revealed. A developer on the Chromium issue tracker posted a screenshot from a device running Android L (seen above). In the status bar, you will see a tasty treat. What is it? A lollipop.

While we do not know the exact version number Google is going with, it is a safe bet that Android Lollipop is coming soon.

Leaked Google Nexus 6 ad makes amusing light of the phone’s rumoured size

Google Nexus 6 adEveryone in the Android community can almost smell the new Nexus 6 about to burst forth into existence, and despite a large number of people denouncing the device’s alleged large size, there also appear to be a lot of people who are still going to be getting it. Not one to be without a sense of humour, a leaked Google Nexus 6 ad is doing the rounds on the internet and appears to be an almost perfect, hilarious take on what the Nexus 6 represents to the Android and smartphone community. Take a look at the ad which was (thankfully) recorded:

The ad ends with the motto  “Android: Be Together, Not The Same”, a nice fitting way to say that Google is trying to cater to everyone within the community but also trying to innovate and unite the community. The video also shows a link which currently goes to a Google hosted page that doesn’t exist yet, but presumably will go live once the Nexus 6 (and presumably Android L) are officially announced. It’s hard to say whether the rumoured 5.9-inch Nexus device is going to be as popular as last year’s more normally sized Nexus 5, but among the Android community at least, few can complain about a good price on a Quad HD display with stock Android L.

What do you think about the Google Nexus 6 ad? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Android L may be called Licorice

licorice

In the ongoing mystery that is what the next version of Android will be called, we might just have a new contender. Giovanni Calabrese, the guy that constructs the software sculptures outside Google’s headquarters, sent out a Google+ post which could be hinting at what Android L may stand for.

Although his post doesn’t reveal too much, here’s what it says:

I never had a great liking for Licorice, but damn! there are some great flavors out there !!!

Odd that he would chose to mention Licorice in a post, right? Or maybe it’s just a major troll entirely.

What are your thoughts? How does Android Licorice sound as the next version of Android?
