LG_G2_Back_Camera_Lens_Power_Volume_Buttons_TA

Starting today, T-Mobile customers with the LG G2 will begin to receive a software update. It unsurprisingly is for Lollipop. The carrier says that the update will take place between April 14 and May 22, but we assume everyone will be updated fairly quick. The changelog issued by T-Mobile only states that Android 5.0 Lollipop is among the new features.

Let us know in the comments when you receive the over-the-air (OTA) update.

The Verizon Wireless version of the LG G3 finally is receiving an update to Android Lollipop, according to a press release on its site.

In an attached PDF, Verizon has documented the features of the update. These include: material design, an improved runtime, lock screen notifications, the ability to hide sensitive notifications, smart lock, searchable settings, floating action buttons, and screen pinning.

With lock screen notifications, notifications can appear on the lock screen based on user settings. This allows up to two notifications to be displayed. A numeric indicator pops up for any additional ones. Also, notifications can be swiped to display the next one without needing to unlock the phone. The user can even set all or some of the, to be hidden. When “Show all notifications” is chosen, pressing the indicator or swiping the list downward will it.

Smart Lock provides two ways to unlock the G3. The first is through face recognition, and the second is through a simple swipe in place of a security lock when the device is connected to a “Trusted” Bluetooth device added via Smart Lock settings.

The floating action buttons setting adds buttons to some of the main apps (Clock, Contacts, Email, Messaging, and Music) that involve adding new items.

One of the last features is screen pinning, found on the Recent apps screen. This locks the G3 to just a single app, preventing the launching of others until it is unpinned through touching and holding the back and recent buttons at the same time. Only the back button will work until the app is unpinned.

AT&T rolling out Lollipop to Galaxy S5 today

style=”display:block”

Twitter account ATTCares has confirmed that Android 5.0.1 will be rolling out to Galaxy S5 owners starting today. Nationwide rollout will occur over the next few days, so don’t be too surprised if your S5 doesn’t receive the update today.

AT&T has been pretty busy over the past few days with Lollipop updates for phones such as the HTC One M7, One M8 as well as the Galaxy S4. There is no current timetable for Android 5.1 for these phones, and for the One M7, the update might not come at all. HTC confirmed that the One M7 will not receive any more updates, however there is talk that they might update it one last time to Android 5.1, considering all the fixes that the latest Android brings.

Latest Android distribution numbers show continued modest increase for Lollipop, 5.1 makes an appearance too

Android_Distribution_Numbers_040815

It’s funny how everyone gets so excited for the monthly Android distribution numbers. It’s not like they ever show anything different. It’s the same thing every year……Every new version of Android takes forever to reach the majority of device, and we always see the biggest increases when new phones like the HTC One and Galaxy S6 get released.

Android just released the latest numbers, which show Lollipop’s continued very slow rise. Now sitting at 5.4%, that’s only a 1.1% increase from last month. Also part of that number is Android 5.1, which represents 0.4% of that 5.4%.

The majority of phones and tablets continue to be on Jelly Bean and KitKat, which represent 40.7% and 41.4% respectively. So, as you can see, we can expect Lollipop to be around 40% this time next year.

Things never change, but the good news is that with Material Design and Google continuing to update core apps in the Play Store, most users do’t feel as behind as they did back in the Ice Cream Sandwich days.

Huawei_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has just launched the SnapTo handset in the U.S. featuring Android 4.4 KitKat. But it seems like the company has some other plans for its existing crop of smartphones as well as a few relatively old ones.

The company has released the full list of devices that will be receiving the Android 5.0 update which includes the Honor 6 Plus, while a couple of old handsets like the Honor 4X are included as well. Prominent among the devices are the

huaweilollipop

Customers will have some waiting to do though, as the company is not expected to begin the update rollout until June, starting with the Mate 7.  This will be followed by the P7, Mate2, 6 Plus, and the Honor 4X (Che2-TL00M) which will receive the update in July. The rest will be updated to Android 5.0 by September 2015 according to the company. Huawei will add its UI layering on top of vanilla Android, so don’t expect this to be anything like stock Android.
