HTC One (M8) for Verizon expected to receive Lollipop approval in two weeks
A few weeks ago, Verizon shocked everyone when it became the first carrier in the United States to push Android 5.0 to the Galaxy S 5. Look back at Verizon’s history in updating its devices and you will find that the updates are either extremely slow or nonexistent. So it is great to see some changes at Big Red. Now, many people with the HTC One (M8) on Verizon are waiting to receive Lollipop. HTC Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi, essentially the company’s spokesperson for software updates, took to Twitter to provide some information.
Hit the break for more.
On Twitter, one owner of the 2014 HTC flagship expressed hope that his device would receive the update this week. Versi responded with good news and bad news. The bad news is that the update will not arrive this week. The good news, though, is that approval for the update is expected to be received in the first week of March.
@RyGi2001 it’s in the lab, we’re expecting approval first week of March.

Xposed Framework for Lollipop released [alpha build]
Customization is one of the key features of the entire Android ecosystem. The way that user’s are empowered to change their own environments, within the bounds of a given Android powered device, has been crucial to Android’s overall adoption rate. Historically custom ROMS were needed to truly expose the full power of what the mobile OS has to offer. Flashing ROMs, though, can be a rather time consuming process. What happens if you brick your device? What happens if you running a Nexus device and just want extended functionality? This is where the Xposed framework comes into play. After rooting your device and installing Xposed, you now have access to a ton of a la carte modules that can increase the overall functionality of the device. The beauty of Xposed is that you can do all this without the need to flash and reflash your device when new ROM updates are released. Just install a mod, turn it on, reboot, and you’re done. Until recently, support for Android 5.0 has not been available.
This weekend the creator of Xposed, rovo89, announced and released the Xposed framework for Android 5.0 Lollipop. According to rovo89, “Many [Xposed] modules will actually work without any changes, especially those which modify the behavior of user apps…” For testing purposes, the newest version of Xposed is still in alpha. See it released into production once a spectrum of Xposed’s seasoned modders get their hands on it. Check out the XDA thread here for apks and instructions. Happy modding.

Samsung Galaxy Note II seemingly getting the Android 5.0 update
Multiple reports from Samsung have confirmed that its 2012 flagship, the Galaxy Note II will be receiving the latest Android 5.0 update. This has taken us a little by surprise considering how older devices are often neglected by OEMs.
There’s no word on when the smartphone will receive the update officially, but we’re guessing it won’t be long away considering that the update is already seeding to the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5 and the likes. Strangely enough, the Galaxy S III seems to be exempt from the Lollipop update, even though it was launched some months prior to the arrival of the Galaxy Note II.
The Galaxy Note II arrived with Android 4.1.2, so it has seen a variety of Android updates along the way. It’s safe to assume that its update cycle will end with Lollipop, but the customers won’t be complaining much. The only plaguing question now is with regards to the timing of this update.
Do you still own a Galaxy Note II? What do you make of this news?

Android 5.0 Lollipop users reportedly experience fewer crashes than iOS 8 users
Comparing Android to iOS is always a delicate topic. Both sides have hard-core fans who are often unable to appreciate what the opposite number brings to the table. One aspect that is often brought up by iOS fans when debating which OS is best is the alleged ‘bugginess’ of the Android operating system when compared to the ‘reliability’ of Apple’s mobile offering. This point of contention would appear to be invalid though, with the news that the latest version of Android (Lollipop) offers increased stability. By comparison, it seems that iOS 8 has gone in the opposite direction, with it’s users experiencing higher app crash rates.
As you can see from the figures quoted below, the difference in app crash rates is barely noticeable, but for the hard-core fan in a heated discussion it may prove to be a satisfying point to raise to their fellow debater. The data was compiled by Crittercism, a company that monitors the performance of mobile applications.
- Android 5.0 Lollipop: 2.0 %
- iOS 8: 2.2%
Unlike iOS 8 that actually increased its app crash rate by .3% over iOS 7, Android 5.0 Lollipop managed a decrease of .6% over it’s the previous version of Android (KitKat). While that .6% isn’t a large number, it’s definitely a step in the right direction, which is another point to raise when debating which mobile operating system is best. It’s also impressive considering all the different devices that Android has to offer. It should be noted that crashes can occur for any number of reasons. Sometimes rather than it being the fault of the operating system, an app can crash from poor coding or issues with the device itself.
