Samsung has certainly done a fairly good job of turning their update image around over the last few months. I remember a time when updates to anything over a year old was a pipe dream and if it did land, it would be for the international variant. Now we are seeing a near weekly push from one carrier or another to one device or another that is putting Android 5.0 Lollipop in the hands of consumers. Today we see word on the Sprint support page for the Samsung Galaxy S4 in regards to updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Sprint is a little caddy about what all is included though. We have seen Verizon start pushing Lyft into updates while AT&T is pushing Uber in. Sprints last update to the Galaxy S4 was back in July of 2014 and brought along the HD Voice icon and some Google security patches. With the Lollipop update that is all they list in the description section. Not that it is a bad thing if they just handed over Android 5.0, but I am sure there are apps removed, things fixed and possibly new things included.

If you are still sporting a stock Samsung Galaxy S4 on the Now Network, then be on the lookout for a software update. It will be rolling out in stages as usual, but you can always head into Settings > More > System Update > Update Samsung Software > Check Now. Undoubtedly you will need well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and plenty of time to kill for the file to download and install. Previous updates on other carriers seemed to land around 1GB. In the end, you should end up Android 5.0 Lollipop with version number L720VPUGOD2.

Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S4 gets Android 5.0 Lollipop

Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update

It’s a known fact that old technology–even if its only three years–often doesn’t get updated to the latest and greatest, such as Android 5.0 Lollipop. We’ve seen this time and time again with Samsung and LG devices. Thankfully, Galaxy S4 owners aren’t apart of that crowd, and users touting the device on Sprint should be getting the update sometime today.

If you haven’t been prompted to download the new firmware version, select the check for updates option in your smartphone. However, keep in mind that you may not receive it today, as these updates are often rolled out in stages, as is the case with many carriers.

Have you received Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Galaxy S4 yet? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

Sony launches selfie-centric Xperia C4 and C4 Dual

After the Xperia C3, Sony has added two more selfie-centric handsets to its portfolio – the Xperia C4 and Xperia C4 Dual.

While Sony might be trying to cash in on the current selfie phenomenon, it only sports a 5-megapixel front camera in comparison to 8-megapixel and 10-megapixel ones that are in markets now-a-days.

Although the resolution of Xperia C4’s front camera may only be a lot, it is capable of fitting all your buddies in a snap with its wide-angle camera.

“Xperia C4 caters to consumers that want a smartphone that not only takes great photos, but also packs a punch. Benefiting from Sony’s camera expertise, the 5MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens lets you capture perfect selfies, while its quality display and performance features provide an all-round advanced smartphone experience,” said Tony McNulty, Vice-President, Value Category Business Management at Sony Mobile Communications.

As far as the other specs are concerned, both phones feature a 5.5-inch FHD display, a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MTK6752 chipset clocked at 1.7 GHz. It has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable internal storage and 2,600mAh battery. Both the phones run Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box, and the Xperia C4 Dual has two SIM card slots.

If you were worried about your Samsung Galaxy Note Edge on T-Mobile getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, you can cool your jets. Today T-Mobile posted on their support page for the device that Lollipop, Android 5.0.2 to be more specific, is on its way out to users across the US. The build number you will be looking for is N915TUVU1COD7. It will bring all the Lollipop goodness that your fellow Note 4 friends have enjoyed for the last week or so, including Wi-Fi Passport. Which allows you to use Wi-Fi calling on any open Wi-Fi network and all networks you have access to. T-Mobile doesn’t list any apps being added or removed nor do they spout off the new fluid animations, privacy mode, lockscreen notifications or other awesome aspects of the new OS.

Per the norm, you need over 50% battery life on your device, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time for the 1.1GB file to download and install to your Note Edge. If pulling down isn’t your cup of tea, then you can always plug your device into a PC and open up Samsung Kies and push it through that way.

The one-year old HTC One Mini 2 won’t be getting Lollipop

htc one mini 2 first look (17 of 22)

The One Mini 2 is yet to celebrate its first anniversary (it was officially launched on May 15, 2014), but HTC is eager to make it forgotten, at least when it comes to updates.

In reply to a customer question on Twitter, HTC announced that the One Mini 2 won’t be getting Lollipop, as updating it to the newer Android version would not result in an “optimal experience.”

With 1GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz processor, the One Mini 2 is indeed relatively poorly endowed in terms of specs. Then again, Motorola has been doing a solid job issuing Lollipop for the first-gen Moto G, which features the same processing package. HTC’s Sense software is probably harder on the system than the Moto G’s stock-like OS, but we’re still unconvinced that HTC really couldn’t make it work.

The One Mini 2 was HTC’s compact version of the One M8, featuring Android 4.4 KitKat, a 4.5-inch HD display, a quad-core processor, 16GB of expandable storage, a 2,100 mAh, and a 13MP rear camera.

The One M7 is another device that HTC is ready to leave behind, though the company hinted it may reconsider its decision to not update the former flagship to Android 5.1.

Android 5.0 Lollipop starts rolling out for T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4

Happy Monday Android world! Over the weekend Des Smith posted a tweet that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update had been approved and to be on the lookout for it this week. I jumped to settings this morning and gave it hopeful tap to see, and there it was waiting for me to download.

The update weighs in at just over 1085MBs and takes about 25 minutes to download. On my Wi-Fi it took about 28 minutes for the full update to download, but another hour for the full install and app update process to finish. That time line might be less for some as it did optimize 390 apps on my device.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop (1)T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop (2)T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop (3)
The update brings all the Lollipop things we have been waiting for like lock screen notifications, Privacy Mode, more fluid animations and seems to make it run a bit smoother. As with any update, it is rolling out in stages in an OTA. You will need well over 50% battery life, at least 3GB of storage available for it download and install and a solid Wi-Fi connection. In my experience it took about 30 minutes to download and another 45 to and hour before it was up and running smoothly due to the number of apps I have installed and because it needs to update Google Play Services and a number of other apps that have Lollipop variations.

If you don’t see the update immediately available, you do have the option of installing it via Samsung Kies on your computer as well. Sometimes that is a better option for some people.
