Oppo details Lollipop-based ColorOS 2.1.0i Beta for the Find 7 and Find 7a

If you’re the owner of an Oppo Find 7 or Find 7a and can’t wait to get a taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop, your wait is almost over. Oppo has just released a preview to show what’s to come in the next version of ColorOS. Shown off in the screenshots and video below, version 2.1.0i will be released as a beta version sometime soon.
As you can see below, version 2.1.0i brings a number of user interface changes to Oppo’s software overlay. A more simple and flat icon design is present, as well as a much more responsive interface compared to previous builds of the software. This new build won’t feature as many Material Design-centric tweaks that we’re used to seeing in other builds of Lollipop, but we’re sure most users will welcome the changes present in this update.

Android 5.0 Lollipop TestDrive for Moto X 1st gen starting in the US and Latin America

The 1st gen Moto X is still a pretty solid device for a lot of people. It was small, packed a lot of features and was very customizable. It did pretty well in many markets. What is missing from the device is Android 5.0 Lollipop though. We all want it of course. It would seem that we have a little information about said update in a Google+ post that went out this afternoon from Motorola’s Senior Director of Software Product Management, David Schuster.
In his brief post he explains that the update has been a struggle due to the lack of support from some of their partners. Never a fun statement, or realization, to have to make. None the less, he went on to say that they are starting to TestDrive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update in the US and in Latin America and with any luck, should begin rolling it out in a few weeks. That doesn’t mean everyone with a 1st Gen Moto X will see the update on deployment though. If history proves to be true, then it will most likely land on unlocked variants first with carrier branded versions to follow at some point afterwards. Hopefully all the carriers will be willing to jump on board and make the update happen on the aging device.

OnePlus to announce HydrogenOS in Beijing on May 28th
It’s just over a month ago that the OnePlus finally released the OxygenOS for the One handset after numerous delays. While the OxygenOS firmware is meant for international One handsets, OnePlus has just announced it will release a new ROM called HydrogenOS for the One handset in China.
As you can see from the image below, the HydrogenOS ROM is scheduled (don’t laugh) to be announced in Beijing on May 28th. While specific details are scarce, it will be based on Android 5.0, and if it follows the OxygenOS formula, HydrogenOS should be a fairly lightweight ROM concentrating on battery and performance optimizations. The OnePlus CEO has stated that the new OS won’t be yet another iOS copycat. What do you think? Will the HydrogenOS firmware be released on time?

Samsung: Note 2 will see Lollipop, but only in select regions

While Samsung isn’t known for being the quickest when it comes to pushing out Android updates, the Korean giant has actually done a pretty solid job with Lollipop. We’ve seen Android 5.0 push out to numerous flagships in the last few months, including somewhat older models like the Note 3 and Galaxy S4. But what about the Galaxy Note 2? Will this rather aged device ever see Google’s latest sweet treat?
Although Samsung Poland confirmed the Note 2 would, in fact, see Android 5.0 back in February, a more recent report directly from Samsung Gulf says that the Note 2 will not be making them move to Lollipop. Who’s right? As it turns out, they both are.

Thanks to another tweet, this time from Samsung DK, it has been clarified that some regions are getting the update, while others will not. Although we have no way of knowing which regions are opting out of the update, we wouldn’t be too surprised if it eventually makes its way to North America and to the US carrier-branded Note 2 units — though that’s just speculation on our part.
With the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 now heading into its third year of life, we have to admit it is pretty impressive to see Samsung continue with this level of support, even if it isn’t reaching eveyone. As for when the Note 2 will get the update? That’s less clear, though hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thanks for the tip, Joseph Raphael!
Android 5.0 Lollipop now rolling out to the Sprint Galaxy S4

Sprint is now beginning to roll out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Samsung Galaxy S4. The update, which will bring the build number up to L720VPUGOD2, is for the non-Spark variant of the device.
So what exactly will this update bring to your S4? Consisting of both aesthetic and under the hood enhancements, Lollipop brings a lot to the table. Google has included a ton of visual changes with its new Material Design guidelines, as well as a ton of new animations throughout the UI. These changes won’t be as noticeable as they are on a device running vanilla Android, thanks to Samsung’s Touchwiz overlay. Some additional features include the switch to the Android Runtime (ART), Priority Mode notifications, Smart Lock and much more. According to the software update page, it doesn’t look like Sprint has included any carrier-specific changes in this update.

Samsung confirms Lollipop for Galaxy Note 2 in some markets

Despite recent confirmation that Galaxy Note 2 wouldn’t be receiving Lollipop, Samsung Danmark took to Twitter that some variants of the device would be getting it.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2’s out of Denmark (CSC code: NEE) will get the update. In another tweet, Samsung Danmark said both the Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100) and the Galaxy Note 2 4G (G5-N7105) will get Lollipop. However, the updates will occur at different times, and there is currently no info as to which one will come first.
Updates to these devices are based on different markets, so it’s entirely possible that other models could get the firmware upgrade in the near future. After all, before the confirmation that the Note 2 wouldn’t be receiving Lollipop, the device was on an official update list for it. Samsung definitely had plans to upgrade at least a few of the models out there.
Galaxy Note 2 users aren’t left behind just yet. Let’s hope Samsung gets the ball rolling and we’ll see a larger rollout across markets. Of course, there’s always the option of rooting and flashing your smartphone with the updated firmware, if you’re comfortable with that.

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop headed out to the Dell Venue 8 tablet

The Dell Venue 8 tablet was a remarkable surprise to many, including myself. The Intel processor keeps the battery alive for an exceptional amount of time and it packs enough power to keep your tablet needs moving. It also packed a three camera array on the rear that lead to some cool depth of field photography and editing abilities. While the cameras were present, the software that gave it the options came out a short time after the tablets launch. The drawback to the tablet was that it launched with Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Not the end of the world, but it was new enough that Lollipop could have been an option. The good news though is that Dell is now pushing Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to the device.
Droid-Life is reporting that the update it encrypted the device which took a few minutes. After installation and boot you will find the tablet is encrypted, but we aren’t exactly sure why it is a necessary step. My best guess would be in regards to the depth of field camera software, but anything is possible. Like all other Lollipop updates you will get the lockscreen notifications, the fancy and fluid animations and bold colors.
Anyone out there own a Dell Venue 8 tablet seeing the update today? If you don’t head into settings and give it a ping to see what happens.
