Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Samsung Galaxy S5 arrives in the UK

Galaxy-S5-Logo-1

Towards the end of December, Samsung started a wider roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) in Europe. A limited roll out actually started in Poland at the beginning of December, and then moved to Spain. Now the firmware update has arrived in the UK.

Since the initial deployment in Poland, Samsung has tweaked the firmware a couple of times to squash some last minute bugs. It now seems that the upgrade is ready for mass consumption.

Samsung’s new firmware does more than just upgrade the underlying operating system. The fingerprint sensor has also been improved because of a new driver, and the Note 4’s lock screen has also been brought over to the Galaxy S5.

An upgrade to Android 5.0 for Galaxy S5 devices in Europe was expected, however it seems that Samsung is a little behind schedule. Data gleaned from France’s second largest carrier, SFR, indicated that the S5 would get Android 5.0 during December. However it looks like a January general roll out is well under way.

Once the roll out is underway, it is expected that Samsung will turn its attentions to the Galaxy Note 4. Have you received Android 5.0 Lollipop for your Galaxy S5? If so, please let us know.

LG G2 Shown Running Android 5.0 in Video

LG G2

A YouTube video has surfaced of the LG G2 running on Android 5.0 Lollipop. The nearly three minute video below, filmed with a Galaxy Note 3, shows a person take a tour of the software.

There is no doubt this is indeed Lollipop as can be seen from the presence of Material design. For example, just 14 seconds in, you can see the multitasking view has the carousel effect that is present in Android L.

Since the LG G2 was the company’s flagship of 2013, hopefully, this should mean an update is also coming to its successor, the G3.

Android 5.0 Lollipop gets ported to the HTC HD2

HTC-HD2-LollipopIf you were expecting the headline to read something like “Lollipop gets ported to HTC Butterfly S” or some other relatively new HTC device then sorry for the confusion! Yes, the HTC HD2 is ahead of the game again, this time with a port of Lollipop by XDA Senior Member macs18max.

For those of you unfamiliar with the HD2, it was HTC’s Windows Phone 6.5 device, released in 2009. It has a 4.3 inch, 800 x 480 display, 448MB of usable RAM and is powered by a 1 GHz single-core Qualcomm Scorpion processor. The perfect candidate for Android 5.0 Lollipop!

The Hd2 has a become a legend in the custom ROM community for its ability to run different operating systems. It probably has the world record for the number of different mobile operating systems that can run on a single device.

The HD2 has been seen booting Android 2.2 Froyo right up to Android 5.0 Lollipop, as well as Ubuntu, MeeGo, Sailfish, Windows RT and Firefox OS.

It started out as a Window Phone 6.5 device, but when it was abandoned by Microsoft and didn’t get any more upgrades, the hacker community took the phone to heart and started porting. In its long and illustrious history the HD2 has been seen booting Android 2.2 Froyo right up to Android 5.0 Lollipop, as well as Ubuntu, MeeGo, Sailfish, Windows RT and Firefox OS.

Android 5.0 Lollipop was successfully booted on the HD2 using the 3.0.101 kernel, however the ROM is in its very early stages, and only the display and audio are working at the moment. However macs18max has pledged to continue working on the port.

If you want to find out more and even try out this custom firmware then head over to XDA’s HTC HD2 Lollipop 5.0.2 thread!

Do you, or did you own a HTC HD2? Any thoughts?

Android 5.0 Lollipop set to roll out to Sony Xperia Z3 next month

sony xperia z3 review (4 of 26)

We already new that Sony would be bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to the “core” Xperia Z2 and Z3 lines in early 2015, with the first whispers of this timeframe surfacing in October with Sony finally confirming the news in December. Up until now, the Japanese smartphone maker hasn’t been too specific on exactly when the Lollipop rollout will happen. Sony still hasn’t given us an exact date, but they have revealed the update will begin rolling out to the Xperia Z3 next month.

It’s unclear how much longer it will take for the update to reach other members of the Z3 and Z2 family, though it’s still nice to hear that Sony is committed to bringing Lollipop sooner rather than later. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more specifics of their plans.

How do you feel about how Sony has handled its plans for Lollipop so far — about as expected, moving faster than you expected or somewhere in between? Let us know in the comments.
