LG’s extra-large G Pro 2 packs a 4K video camera and knock code unlock feature

Looks like LG wants to get out ahead of all the smartphone news soon to come from Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, as the South Korean company has officially announced the G Pro 2. As prior leaks indicated, it’s a larger version of the original G Pro — it packs a 5.9-inch screen, as opposed to its predecessor’s 5.5-inch panel. That means the G Pro 2 matches Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 in terms of size and it packs the same 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display. Additionally, it has an evolution of the G Pro’s knock-to-unlock feature that allows you to unlock and power up the phone by tapping on the screen in a specific cadence.

LG’s latest also has an optically stabilized, 13-megapixel camera and 32GB to store your photos and any 4K videos you shoot at up to 120 frames per second. Plus, it’ll ship with Android’s latest version 4.4 (KitKat) and can be had in three colors: white, silver and black. Naturally, LG has declined to give us a price or a ship date for its new flagship here in the States, but hopefully they’ll give up all those details and more at MWC.

Joy of joys: Android 4.4 is coming to multiple Samsung Galaxy Devices

Android 4.4 is coming to multiple Samsung Galaxy DevicesFor Samsung owners who don’t own a Galaxy S4 or a Galaxy Note 3, the big question remains: which of Samsung‘s remaining devices will they bother updating to Android 4.4? Well, according to Phandroid’s sources, they’re actually bothering with quite a few as they are reporting that Android 4.4 is coming to multiple Samsung Galaxy devices. The devices included in this report were:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-i337
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2
  • Samsung Galaxy S3
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

Of which, we know the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 have already started their updates. This report does strengthen the case for Android 4.4 KitKat coming to some of Samsung’s other devices, which was first suggested by several leaked Samsung documents (see here and here) which appeared to suggest that Samsung was contemplating KitKat updates for devices as far down its hierarchy as the Galaxy Core and Galaxy Ace 2. I do find it interesting that the Galaxy S4 Mini isn’t included in Phandroid’s list though, but judging by these multiple corroborated stories, it’s probable that the actually list of device updates is much longer.

What do you think of this news: do you think Samsung is actually going to make good and release Android 4.4 to all of these devices and potentially more? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update for the HTC One Gets Approval from Verizon

HTC-One-verizon-update

Verizon HTC One users…your Android 4.4 is almost here. The Android 4.4 and Sense 5.5 update has just been approved by Verizon, and the update roll out should be anytime now. It is pretty surprising that Verizon has beaten AT&T and T-Mobile to the punch, given their track record with device updates. Sprint already released a manual update for Android 4.4, so if the OTA update for Verizon has a manual method to get it on your HTC One, then we will post it up. Other than that, keep a lookout for the update.

This is the red Nexus 5 (hands-on)

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and ’tis the season for special red versions of well-established phones to magically pop out of the woodwork. It seems to happen at least once or twice this time of year, and the first one to make an appearance this year is the Nexus 5. Just like its black and white counterparts, the collaboration between Google and LG is now available in the Play Store for $350 (16GB) and $400 (32GB) and comes with all of the same specs.

The red Nexus 5 showed up at the door, so we wanted to take the opportunity to snap a bunch of shots for those of you who may be on the fence about whether or not to buy one. Is it any better than the other colors? Not really, but it all comes down to personal preference. The red version has the same smooth matte finish as the white model (in contrast to the black model, which has a soft-touch plastic feel). As you can see, LG and Google opted for red sides and edges, as well as a red-earpiece to go along with it. As there is more to look at than to actually say about the new hue, head straight down to our gallery below, which offers a perspective from nearly every angle.

[ROM] HTC Droid DNA gets Android 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5 via a HTC One stock Port

HTC Droid DNA gets Android 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5If you own a HTC device that isn’t a HTC One, you’ve likely been waiting extremely patiently to hear any word regarding software updates to your HTC device, whether it be Android 4.3 or Android 4.4 KitKat. If LlabTooFer’s leak is correct, most devices newer than the HTC Bufferfly, also known as the HTC Droid DNA, can except to skip Android 4.3 in favour of Android KitKat, and that is expected to happen around March or April. But owing to the fact that HTC has already been late on its delivery of Android 4.4 to the HTC One, you can bet that these other updates will also be late. And that’s when the clever fellows over at XDA come in; thanks to them, the HTC Droid DNA gets Android 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5 far, far ahead of schedule.

The ROM itself technically isn’t a bespoke ROM for the HTC Droid DNA; it’s actually a port from the HTC One software so you will probably see all of the features that you’ve been hearing about on the One. The ROM is also completely stock and supports CDMA and GSM networks. It’s always great to see the community bringing out ROMs, particularly software versions that are slow to reach aging devices, and bringing them out way before their expected released date (if they’ve even been given one). If you want to try out this ROM, hit the XDA Forum link below to jump to the post.

Who has a HTC Droid DNA is going to try this stock port of Android KitKat? If you try it, let us know how you find it.

Samsung Galaxy Note Pro and Tab Pro series coming to US February 13th

Looks like Office Depot wasn’t messing with us when it began offering pre-orders of Samsung’s brand-new 12.2-inch tablet ahead of its official US launch; it just jumped the gun a bit. As it turns out, the entire litany of Samsung’s Galaxy tablets announced at CES — which include the 12.2-inch Note Pro and all three sizes in the Tab Pro series — will be available stateside on February 13th. Just in case you’re worried about hordes of people trying to grab one as a last-minute Valentine’s Day present, you can also pre-order any of the products starting right now through one of several online retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, Fry’s, Newegg and others. There’s no word on any carrier agreements yet, however, and it appears that all four models are WiFi-only.

Pricing varies wildly depending on which model you’re getting. Starting at the low end of the spectrum, you can grab the 8.4-inch Tab Pro (16GB) for $400; the 10.1-inch Tab Pro (16GB) for $500; and the 12.2-inch Tab Pro (32GB) for $650. Last but not least, the productivity powerhouse itself — the Note Pro — can be yours for $750 (32GB) or $850 (64GB). Additionally, the devices come with 50GB Dropbox space for two years, a $25 Google Play credit, three-month trial Hulu Plus subscription, six months of Cisco WebEx Premium 8 and a year subscription with Bloomberg Businessweek.

Samsung also confirms that the new tablets are still outfitted with Magazine UX, which means these products haven’t been affected by the company’s rumored deal with Google. According to reports from last week, Samsung agreed to tone down the amount of customization and special features in its Android devices. Naturally, if this does happen, we expect it to be a while before it finally takes effect.
