Nearly full set of specs detailed for HTC One+ (M8)

It seems that a day can’t go by without even more details about the successor to the HTC One coming out.

The latest in the rumors suggest that the new flagship, supposedly called the HTC One+, will feature a: 5-inch 1080p display covered by Gorilla Glass 3, a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805 processor, 6 MP or 8 MP rear-facing camera with UltraPixel™ technology and double lens, 2.1 MP front-facing camera, 2 GB of RAM, NFC, 2900mAh battery and a micro-SIM.

Two other rumored features that make this a very interesting device is that HTC may be going with on-screen navigation buttons and it will run Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Sense™ 6.0.

We previously reported that it’s widely expected to launch sometime in Q1 of 2014, but we may even see this at CES 2014, who knows. If that’s the case, you will see any info here once it’s available.

Android 4.4 For LG G2 Rolling Out Now In Korea

android 4.4 for lg g2If you own a LG G2 and you live in Korea, you’ll be happy to know you may have another Christmas present waiting for you under the proverbial tree. Reports are saying that Android 4.4 for LG G2 is hitting the airwaves now, in particular from Korean carrier, KT. The update is a pretty hefty one at 637.39MB and will bring the G2 from its decidely outdated Android 4.2.2 to Android 4.4 ahead of its Snapdragon 800 competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z1.

This actually comes a little ahead of schedule as it was announced by LG Canada that the update wouldn’t be hitting till the end of Q1 2014 i.e. around March. That’s not to say this still won’t be true; it’s entirely possible that LG is doing a soft launch of this update in its native Korea to suss out any glaring issues (as Samsung embarassingly experienced with its Android 4.3 release for Galaxy S3), which would still mean that everyone else with G2′s around the world would still need to wait a few months to get Android 4.4. Even so, it’s nice to see LG is on the ball for once.

Are you excited to hear about Android 4.4 for LG G2 being spotted in the wild? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

[LEAK] French Carrier SFR Lets Slip That Android 4.4 For Galaxy S4 And Note 3 Expected Late Jan/Early Feb 2014

android 4.4 for galaxy s4About a month ago, a leaked Samsung document seemed to suggest that Android 4.4 for Galaxy S4 and Note 3 were being planned to be released in January next year with a second wave to follow and update the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 later in March or April. While there’s been no confirmation that the leaked document was accurate or even real, a message on the side of French carrier, SFR, appears to have confirmed the time-frame for the software update that we were expecting.

SFR claims that Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) should be available for the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 somewhere between late January to early February 2014 which is right in the ballpark we were expecting, assuming the international variants of the phone are updated first, followed by the carrier variants. While this still isn’t a confirmation, Phandroid appears to believe that SFR’s hunches are generally quite accurate seeing as they predicted the release of Android 4.3 on Galaxy S3 and Note 2 (and for my own reasons I’m a little adamant). Nevertheless, Samsung could definitely be turning over a new leaf with software updates in the new year so we’ll be hanging out for any further news whenever it hits.

Do you think Samsung will meet the late Jan/early Feb time-frame suggested by SFR? Let us know what you think in the comments.

LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition hands-on

If you’ve been eyeing the LG G Pad 8.3, your decision just became more difficult. Yesterday Google announced — and began shipping — a Google Play edition of the tablet for $350 in the US, which makes it the very first slate to receive the stock Android treatment. What does this mean, exactly? Google Play editions come with Android 4.4 KitKat without any manufacturer or carrier customizations, so it looks precisely the way Google intends it. This can be good or bad, because there are a couple tradeoffs you need to consider: The good news is that these types of devices typically get upgrades to the newest version of Android far earlier than the vast majority of smartphones and tablets, but you also need to give up a few features that were unique to their skinned counterparts.

In the case of the G Pad 8.3, this means you won’t be able to enjoy the Knock On (aka, “double-knock”) feature, nor will you have Slide Aside or access to a litany of LG’s Q-branded functions like QPair, QRemote or QSlide. None of these missing services are crucial to the functionality of the G Pad, although we must admit that we’ve grown rather fond of Knock On. The camera interface is also quite different, but the only thing that might frustrate you is the lack of manual settings; if you only rely on automatic mode to make the photo magic for you, this likely won’t be an issue of concern. Just like we saw on the Z Ultra Google Play edition, the G Pad also doesn’t come with the native Android gallery app, as it appears that the Google+ Photos app has taken its place as the default. You’ll also have the stock camera UI to deal with, rather than LG’s, so you won’t be able to make many manual adjustments. Of course, this probably isn’t a huge concern for a lot of tablet users who may only use their camera for basic needs.

Aside from software changes, you’re not going to see anything different on the outside. The dimensions are all the same as the original model, as are the actual hardware components. It’s only available in black (the back strip is fitted with brushed metal, with black plastic ends), but it’s offered for the same price as the model we reviewed last month. We’ve got a bunch of images for you to behold below.
