Razer_Forge_TV_Android_TV_With_Controller_01

Ever since Google launched its Nexus Player set-top box, we’ve been waiting for the flood of Android TV devices to hit the market, so far though it’s been slim pickings. One Android TV set-top box that is on the horizon is Razer’s Forge TV bundle that was originally due to arrive back in February, but is now up for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Razer_Forge_TV_Android_TV_Back-630x354In terms of hardware, it can be said that Razer’s Forge TV is what Google’s Nexus Player should have been as you can see from the list of high-end specifications below:

  • Android TV
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Quad-core @ 2.5GHz
  • Adreno 420 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • USB 3.0 port
  • Bluetooth 4.1/WiFi 802.11 ac
  • Ethernet port

Besides running Android TV and being able to download and install apps from Google’s Play Store, the Forge TV can also stream PC games although that functionality is only due in the 2nd quarter of 2015. The Razer Forge TV bundle includes the set-top box as well as a game-pad and is now available to pre-order on Amazon.com for $149.99 with a release date of May 1st.

Amazon’s grocery service stops delivering beer and wine

AmazonFresh grocery bag

We hope you weren’t counting on AmazonFresh to stock up on alcohol for your next big party. GeekWire reports that beer and wine have vanished from the internet grocery service without either a warning or any indication as to whether or not the booze will return. We’ve reached out to Amazon for an explanation, but it’s possible that Amazon is simply playing it safe with regulations. Some states don’t allow alcohol delivery, and those that do (such as Amazon’s home state, Washington) have regulations that determine both who can make deliveries and how the goods reach your door. Whatever the reasons, you’re going to have to either switch to alternatives like Drizly or else get your adult beverages the old-fashioned way.

Grab the Nexus 6 off Amazon for as low as $584

One criticism about the Nexus 6 was that it didn’t share the same cheap price-point that the other devices in the Nexus lineup did, but Amazon have given the device a price drop.

Amazon is selling the unlocked 32GB blue version for just $583.90 – that’s 10% off! In addition, the white 32GB version is $597.94, with the white 64GB version $671.17.

[Deal] Select Nexus 6 models discounted at Amazon

google_nexus_6_screen_trio

There was once a time when Nexus devices were considered affordable. Now they cost just as much as any other flagship device. So any discount on a Nexus device causes consumers to take notice. After all, the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 do start at $399 and $649 respectively. Both of them are, surprisingly, discounted this weekend. We learned yesterday that Best Buy was selling the Nexus 9 for $75 less than normal. Today, we found out that Amazon has select Nexus 6 models discounted. The discounts, which keep changing, are for all models except the Nexus 6 64GB in Midnight Blue. The models that are discounted will keep about 8% in buyers’ pockets.

Amazon Prime Instant Video extends to Android tablets

amazon_prime_instant_video_app_icon

Amazon does not give Android us much attention as it should even though its own hardware is powered by the platform. The company takes an extremely long amount of time before bringing its services to Android and other platforms. Prime Instant Video, which is included in a package for $99 per year, took an eternity to reach phones with Android. There was also the requirement that the Amazon app had to be installed before being redirected to get the Prime Instant Video app from the Amazon Appstore. That’s a lot of unnecessary work and it will continue with the new support of Prime Instant Video for Android tablets.

Amazon Prime Instant Video adds Android tablet support

amazon prime instant video (1)

Back in September Amazon finally gave Android users a way to access Amazon Prime Video content, after long holding out and keeping the functionality exclusive to Kindle Fire tablets, the Fire Phone, and various media streamers and smart TVs. Of course, they sure didn’t make things easy.

To play content, you needed to have the Amazon app, which would let you select video content. However, you also needed the Prime Instant Video app to actually play it back, which was available only through the Amazon AppStore. What’s worse than requiring you to install three different Amazon apps in order to simply watch your Prime Instant Video content? Amazon left tablets out of the fun.

Thankfully, Amazon has now released an update to the Prime Instant Video app that adds Android tablet support. With the update, you’ll be able to browse videos on Amazon.com through your favorite mobile web browser. Once you tap “Watch Now”, the Prime Instant Video app will then load up the movie or show of your choice. Still not exactly the most straightforward process, but better than nothing.

To grab the Prime Instant Video app, you’ll need to head on over to the Amazon AppStore.

Here’s what our readers think of the Amazon Echo

Here's what our readers think of the Amazon Echo

Amazon seems determined to inch its way into every aspect of our lives. The company already has a phone, a set-top box and an entire line of tablets. But what about when you’re nowhere near any such devices? Earlier this week Amazon introduced Dash, allowing you to order household products with the touch of a button. However, last year Amazon also released the Echo, a wireless speaker that doubles as a voice-activated personal assistant named Alexa. Need to play music, search the web or — wait for it — order products from Amazon? Ask and Alexa will make it happen. If having a virtual servant didn’t already make you feel posh, it should be noted that the Amazon Echo ($199, or $99 currently for Prime members) is still an invitation-only product, making units hard to come by. Thus, we turn to our readers to find out if Alexa is your go-to gal, or if this is a waiting list you’re better off skipping.

“A sleek, modern design that is attractive and requires very little space.”

At first blush the Echo is rather attractive, with JoshuaLawson admiring its clean design and mohan37 saying it “looks slick on the countertop.” But you can’t just place it on any table or counter. As skyward01 notes, the Echo needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet, which “limits the locations where the Echo can be positioned.” Aviator4468 does feel it’s “a very handy gadget” to have in your living room or kitchen.

Amazon Echo

As a speaker, JoshuaLawson says the Echo “performs very, very well” and the excellent sound quality was the first thing he noticed. Mohan37 says the “highs are crisp, and lows are decent” for a speaker this size, and skyward01 finds it “does not distort even at high volume.” But if you just needed a good speaker, there are plenty of cheaper options available.

“I can use the voice command function from across the room without any issues.”

The real reason to buy an Echo is for its voice-recognition features, a virtual assistant that goes by the name “Alexa,” though you can rename her. This is particularly handy if someone in your household is named Alexa or something similar; skyward01 reported that the Echo would often respond when his wife Melissa’s name was called. Fortunately, al1885 “only experienced a handful of wake-word misses from Echo in about a month” and found Alexa’s voice rather pleasant.

In action, mohan37 says that the “voice recognition is excellent” and that Alexa “parses things amazingly accurately” though she “may not be able to act on everything you say.” While users like floridaman1942 and al1885 were excited by Echo’s potential, other users were hamstrung by its limitations. Skyward01’s family found themselves repeating their requests quite often, and he says Alexa “didn’t live up to the hope of the intelligent personal assistant that was presented in Amazon’s video about the Echo.” MolonLabe says Alexa’s “limited speech recognition and rigid speech rules are shoddy,” while JoshuaLawson noticed that “you can ask her to define or describe something from Wikipedia, but ask her a question that would require contextual understanding and you get nowhere.”

“I can listen to the news, weather and music without getting out of bed.”

However, there are a few bright spots, and mohan37 says that “the shopping list has already helped streamline trips to the store between my wife and I.” He’s also noticed that “general knowledge questions seem to go pretty well,” as well as a few Easter eggs of note: Star Trek fans should try asking for “tea, Earl Grey, hot.”

The Amazon Echo isn’t quite a must-buy yet, but plenty of users are excited for its potential. Mohan37 feels that “one of the most exciting things about Echo is knowing that it’s growing” and floridaman1942 thinks it can be “a great tool for shut-ins, people confined to beds or wheelchairs, people with eye problems or short-term sick people.” Indeed, in spite of his rather disappointing experience with the device, skyward01 says the Echo’s potential is “genuinely amazing” though its current novelty “wears off quickly.” And, while he says we aren’t there yet, JoshuaLawson feels the Echo is a sign that “we’re on our way to the future.”
