Deal: Galaxy S6 is now just £485 in the UK

samsung galaxy s6 review aa (32 of 45)

While many people probably buy Android smartphones on contract, some people prefer to buy their handset outright and if you’ve been waiting for a deal on the Galaxy S6 in the UK, you’re in luck; Amazon UK have dropped the price of the Galaxy S6 32GB to under £485 presumably for a limited amount of time, although we’ve not been able to confirm this yet.

As spotted by Gavin, the deal is for the 32GB white Galaxy S6 UK variant SIM-free and unlocked for use on any network. Amazon has plenty of listings for the Galaxy S6 but on one listing (which is for a marketplace seller), the company is listed as another seller and is offering a brand-new handset at the reduced price of £484.99. By way of comparison, Samsung still sells the Galaxy S6 for £559 and a 13 percent saving is certainly a good deal for a brand new smartphone.

The Galaxy S6 is Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone and arguably its best flagship device ever. The handset comes with a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display offering a whopping 577 pixel per inch density and it’s powered by Samsung’s own octa-core Exynos 7420 processor that tops the benchmark charts along with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage; there’s also 64GB and 128GB options available and none are expandable.

On the back, it comes with an all-new 16MP camera equipped with Optical Image Stabilisation, 4K Ultra HD video recording and a 5MP front facing snapper that can shoot Quad HD video. Under the hood, its powered by a 2550 mAh battery that can’t be removed but has dual wireless charging built in and also onboard is a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, revamped and optimised user interface. The best thing about the handset is the new metal and glass build that offers a premium experience that’s been lacking from past plastic Samsung flagships.

Interested in picking up this deal before it increases in price? Hit the big button below and be quick; while it’s not confirmed that it’s a limited-time deal, it’s almost certain to rise in price, especially as the handset only launched a couple of months ago!

Amazon is hiring developers for its first PC game

Amazon’s ambitions for gaming apparently go quite a bit beyond the mobile space and “hit” consumer hardware. The e-commerce juggernaut is looking for folks to help flesh out the development team of its first PC game and placed a job posting on Gamasutra in an effort to make that happen. As Polygon notes, the studio already has the likes of Portal‘s Kim Swift and former Ubisoft developer Clint Hocking (Far Cry 2) on board, and the job listing says that designers whose resumés include Halo, Half-life 2 and The Last of Us are involved as well.

What does it mean? Well, at this point it’s hard to really tell aside from the company expanding past the likes of Fire TV and iOS games. Amazon made some pretty key hires, purchases — including the developer of the last Killer Instinct, Double Helix — and business deals in the gaming space of late, too. It isn’t like Jeff Bezos is exactly hurting for money either so this trend continuing is a pretty sure bet.

Amazon drops pricing of the Nexus Player from $99 to $69

Last week, we saw Google slash the pricing of the Nexus Player from the original price of $99 to $79, when purchased through the Google Play Store. There were speculations to whether Google was gearing up to release a new version of the streaming device at Google I/O 2015. Well that rumor never came to fruition, so we were left just assuming that Google was just trying to give a little sales boost.

Today, the Nexus Player has taken another price cut, but not from Google directly. This time the price cut is from $99 down to $69.99 on Amazon. $10 may not be much of a price cut, but this may be the next step on the road map for clearing out stock ahead of an updated product.

With free shipping through Prime, this really is a great deal on a product that was just released last year. Especially with the update to Google Play Store, which makes it easier for users to find Android TV compatible apps, there’s no better time than now to spring for the Nexus Player. Now with over 600 compatible apps, Google is closing the gap between the Nexus Player and the competition to rule your living room.

These last few weeks have been great for those looking to score some deals on great products across the board, and this latest price slashing, is just another notch in the belt. With pricing cuts on the Moto X 2014, Moto 360, and other devices, there are plenty of deals to be had. We would like to take note of the fact that the Nexus Player and Game Pad bundle is currently sold out on Amazon, but you can sign up to be emailed when the bundle becomes available for purchase again.

Have you jumped on any of these deals over the last month or so? Let us know what new devices or toys you have gotten your hands on.

Report: Amazon’s Fire TV has been a U.S. consumer favorite this year

Amazon Fire -12

Set-top boxes have been around for a few years now, but most folks in the United States have just recently begun adopting the media devices into their households. Back in December, we took a close look at some of the best media streamers on the market, and surprisingly, Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire TV Stick were some of the more attractive options on the list. Released back in April 2014, the Fire TV set-top box provided users an inexpensive way to consume all types of media while also supplying enough power to run graphic-intensive games. Apparently consumers in the U.S. are also jumping on board with the product, at least according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.

The report states that Amazon’s Fire TV set-top box accounted for 30% of all streaming set-top box shipments in the U.S. in Q1 2015. A total of 3.5 million streaming units were shipped from January 1st to March 31st, which means more media streamers were shipped throughout this time period than Smart TVs, connected gaming consoles or Smart Blu-ray Players. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since we’ve seen a growing number of companies release inexpensive media streamers over the past year or so.

The Fire TV isn’t the top dog in the industry yet, though. Since its launch in 2007, Apple has shipped more than 15 million Apple TV units, followed by the Roku at 13.5 million. Google has shipped more than 8.5 million Chromecast units since launch, and Amazon has shipped just about 4.5 million units overall.

Which media streamer do you use? If you haven’t purchased one for yourself yet, what method do you use to stream your media?

Bookindy Chrome extension lists local options for books on Amazon

There’s no question that Amazon is hurting independent bookstores. It’s hard to compete with the convenience of quick shipping. If you live in the UK, though, a Chrome extension uses the online retailer’s listings to give you a local option during the hunt for a new book. The add-on is called Bookindy and leverages info on independent retailers from locally-focused site Hive. Not only does it display the spot with the best price, but how far you’ll have to travel in order to pick up the title in person, too. “I wanted to build something that doesn’t compete head-on with the Amazon machine, but embraces it, augments it and nudges you towards the local option to buy,” explains Bookindy’s creator Will Cookson. Unfortunately, it’s only useful in the UK, so here’s to hoping another creative soul devises a similar plug-in for other locales.

Amazon’s Fire TV is a hit among US consumers, says report

Its ability to do everything, from video-streaming to gaming, makes the Fire TV a solid home entertainment product. And people in the US are starting to take note of this. According to Strategy Analytics, an independent firm that researches the consumer market, Amazon’s Fire TV accounted for 30 percent of streaming set-top box shipments in Q1 2015. During this period, which measures numbers from January 1st to March 31st, a total of 3.5 million units were shipped to US consumers, with Fire TV picking up steam despite being introduced over a year ago. That said, the Apple TV is reportedly still king of the streaming set-top space, having shipped more than 15 million units to date — not bad for a hobby, Apple.

Deals: EC Technology and Kmashi power banks discounted on Amazon today

power banks

Amazon has a couple of deals on high-capacity external batteries today that you may want to check out if you’re looking for lots of power on the go.

EC Technology 22,400 mAh

ec technology power bank

First up is the EC Technology 2nd Gen Deluxe battery, with a capacity of 22,400 mAh. That’s enough to charge up most smartphones six or seven times, though the massive capacity comes with the inconvenience of having to carry almost a pound (435 grams) around. The EC Technology battery features three USB ports (2.4A, 2A, 1A) allowing you to charge a variety of devices, even at the same time.

According to the manufacturer description, the device should be good for 500+ charge cycles, which for a battery this size should be quite a lot of time. An added feature is an integrated LED flashlight, making this a good option for camping trips.

The EC Technology 22,400mAh power bank has an average score of 4.4 out of 5 stars and normally goes for $38.99. Applying the code MV76HD9U at checkout, will bring the price down to $28.99.

Kmashi 20,000 mAh

kmashi power banks

The Kmashi MP810 has a capacity of 20,000 mAh, weighs 450 grams, and features a bright azure glossy finish. Like the EC Technology model, this large battery should get you multiple charges for most smartphones and even tablets. However, the Kmashi MP810 only features two USB ports and you don’t get the integrated flashlight.

The Kmashi 20,000 mAh battery features a score of 4.2 out of 5 on Amazon and normally goes for $29.99. Applying the code LIKWGR6D at checkout will bring down the price to $19.99. That’s quite a bit less than the other battery, but as mentioned, the Kmashi is slightly less well featured.

Happy shopping!

Amazon Fire TV adds over 600 channels, apps, and games in 3 months

The Amazon Fire TV was met with some mixed reactions. Some loved the thought of another streaming device on the market, while others were only lukewarm to the idea, in an already overflowing market. In addition to just having the ability to stream movies and TV shows, as well as your Amazon content, Amazon brought game-playing to the forefront with the Fire TV.

Just after the announcement earlier in the week that GameFly would be bringing a Netflix-like streaming service for games. Amazon has announced that over 600 channels, apps, and games have been added to Fire TV devices in the last 3 months.

Amazon Fire TV – now offering over 1,600 titles – has the fastest growing selection of any streaming media device

In order to play PC games such as Batman, Darksider II, and Dirt 3, through the new Gamefly service, owners will need to purchase the Amazon Fire TV Game Controller, for $39.99. This will open you to the possibilities of anything that GameFly has to offer, on top of the games that are already available for the Fire TV.

The team is working hard and moving incredibly fast to bring even more movies, TV shows, live TV, sports, music, channels, apps and games to the Amazon Fire TV platform every week—and it shows. Amazon Fire TV selection has grown 127% in just the last 6 months, and is continuing to accelerate. With the addition of new titles like Fox News, Popcornflix, Candy Crush Saga and GameFly, customers now have access to even more of their favorite TV shows, news content, top quality games and live TV.

These are some pretty impressive numbers for a device that didn’t have the greatest expectations coming out of the gates. With the addition of GameFly streaming services, I’m sure we will begin to see the sales numbers for the Fire TV, start to rise steadily, if not rapidly.
