Amazon previews its ‘The Man in the High Castle’ series tonight
We already got a look at the pilot episode from Amazon’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle, but now it’s time to get ready for the series. At Comic-Con Amazon is presenting the first two episodes, which you can watch live online at EW.com at 10:30ET. Even if you can’t make the stream, you can still check out the full series trailer, embedded after the break, presenting an alternate history where the Allies lost World War II, or the pilot on Amazon before the show launches this fall.

Amazon’s Fling is its version of AirPlay and Google Cast
If you’ve been hoping for an AirPlay or Cast-like tool to beam content to your Amazon streaming gadgets, you’ll soon be in luck. The company revealed its Fling feature this week, a tool that will allow developers to include a way to control media from a mobile device on your Fire TV. Right now, the software will let you send video, audio and still images from an Android or iOS device to the set-top box (or dongle, we’d surmise) for viewing. Devs can also employ “two-way communication” between the Fire TV and a phone or tablet to “engaging second screen experiences.”
The company released an SDK so eager app makers can get started, and Karaoke Party and Rivet Radio are among the first selections to employ the tech. Rather than building the tool into it’s OS like Apple and Google, Amazon is allowing app developers to add in Fling as they wish. Amazon’s mobile devices run a version Google’s operating system after all, and some folks who own its streaming gear probably also own an iOS or Android device. That being said, it’ll be interesting to see if the likes of Netflix, Hulu and others will decide to opt in.

Nexus 9 16GB drops to just £200 in the UK

If you’re after an Android tablet in the UK but haven’t been sure what to buy, a new price for the Google Nexus 9 might just have made your mind up for you. Both Amazon and UK retailer Argos have dropped the price of the HTC-made tablet to just £200 and £199.99 respectively in the UK for the 16GB Wi-Fi version.
If you need more storage and/or on-the-go connectivity, sadly neither retailer has dropped the price of the 32GB or LTE models which means they still retail for £299.99 and £459 respectively. The new price for the Nexus 9 represents a full saving off £119 off its retail price and makes the tablet a bargain given its considerable specs list.
To recap, the Nexus 9 boasts a 8.9-inch display with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution that offers 281 pixels per inch density and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Google’s flagship tablet is powered by a dual-core Nvidia Tegra K1 processor clocked at 2.3GHz with 2GB RAM, an 8MP rear camera that supports full HD video and a 1.2MP front facing camera with 720p HD video. Other notable specs include Bluetooth v4.1 with apt-X, NFC, dual-band WI-Fi and a non-removable 6700 mAh battery. Of course, the Nexus 9 comes running stock Android and will be getting the upcoming Android M update.

It’s unclear how long this deal will last for so if you’re in the market for a new tablet, be sure to be quick. Head over to Amazon by hitting the button below to pick up your Nexus 9 now.
Google’s Nexus 9 tablet slashed to £200 in the UK
If you’d had your eye on a new Nexus device but missed out on the recent round of smartphone sales, today’s new Google tablet deal might be of interest. Just days after the Nexus 6 price was slashed to £304 (normally £479), the WiFi Nexus 9 is enjoying similar treatment, with the 16GB model now setting you back £200 instead of the usual £319. Amazon and Argos are both hosting the deal, which also includes a £100 discount on the 32GB model, but Google has not reflected the price change on its own store.
Motorola and Google have teased sales in recent months, suggesting that both companies are managing stock levels ahead of a likely Nexus hardware refresh in the coming months. Google bucked from tradition with the launch of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 by removing the huge subsidies that earlier flagship devices had enjoyed, which is probably why we’re seeing bigger discounts now we’re enjoying summer. Given that Google has not mirrored the price change, we can only presume that today’s deals are time-limited or are in place until the allotted stock runs out. That means you’ll likely have to move quickly if you’re wanting to grab HTC’s first Nexus tablet while it’s affordable.
Cyanogen growing – hires Qualcomm and Amazon key engineers

Cyanogen’s goal is to “put a bullet through Google’s head” and “take Android away from them”. Can they make it? It seems very unlikely at this point, but one thing is for sure – they continue to race to the top and now they have a couple key industry leaders helping them reach their goals.
The creators of the most popular Android ROM (CyanogenMod) have just hired a couple high-profile engineers from Amazon and Qualcomm. The first is former Amazon engineering leader Stephen Lawler, who will come in as Senior Vice President of Engineering. The second new Cyanogen employee would be Qualcomm’s engineering lead Karthick Iyer, who would take his rightful position at Cyanogen as the new Vice President of Global Systems.

With companies like Foxconn, Qualcomm, Twitter and many others pumping millions into Cyanogen, there is no doubt the company is on the rise. Their strategy is to continue their global expansion and platform growth, which was the main reason for hiring such talented industry personalities.
“Our focus continues to be evolving the Android platform and driving innovation in mobile computing. Signals, services and systems are at the heart of building an evolved computing platform. Both Lawler and Iyer respectively are world class leaders in these areas, each having scaled some of the most successful computing and services platforms. Lawler brings a wealth of technical leadership in mobile, mapping, location, search, and cloud services. Iyer has deep expertise in end-to-end Android development. Both understand how to optimally scale engineering organizations.” -Kirt McMaster, Co-founder and CEO of Cyanogen Inc.
The company recently lost an important partner – OnePlus. This is not the end of Cyanogen in the Asian market, though. They aim to team up with “bigger Chinese vendors”. Who will they be? We are not sure yet, but CEO Kirt McMaster touts it as a loss for OnePlus, as opposed to bad news for the ROM maker.

We are going to see much more from Cyanogen in the future, even if they may not accomplish their goal to overthrow the tyrannical Google presence and make Android a much more open ecosystem without limitations. Both new hires have extensive experience in the industry and have worked on huge projects. They are certainly that important puzzle piece in Cyanogen’s future plans.
What do you think about Cyanogen’s ambitions? Can they really take on Google?
A twenty-year industry veteran, Lawler joins Cyanogen from Amazon where he was most recently a Vice President. Before that, he spent 15 years at Microsoft in key senior roles including CTO of Bing Maps, GM of Software Development for Bing Maps, Bing Mobile, Local Search, MSN and Virtual Earth.
Iyer has held ever increasing engineering responsibilities at Qualcomm Inc. for the past 18 years. Most recently, he was the Vice President of Engineering where he led a global team that designed, developed and commercialized Android solutions at the chipset level. There, he built and led a top-notch global Android organization that successfully enabled the shipments of over 1 billion Android smartphones.
“Our focus continues to be evolving the Android platform and driving innovation in mobile computing,” said Kirt McMaster, Co-founder and CEO of Cyanogen Inc. “Signals, services and systems are at the heart of building an evolved computing platform. Both understand how to optimally scale engineering organizations.”
With offices in Palo Alto, Seattle and Lisbon, the company’s expansion plans include opening offices in China, India and Europe. Through its open source CyanogenMod and commercial distribution Cyanogen OS, it has a global user footprint in 190 countries.

Amazon’s Echo speaker can control your Wink-powered smart home
If you’ve filled up your home with Wink-based lighting and similar smart appliances, you’re about to get an easy (and official) way to manage it all with your voice. As of now, you can tell Amazon’s Echo speaker to control Wink devices — so long as they’re paired, you only have to ask Alexa to “turn on the light” or “turn off the fan.” Range limits will likely prevent you from using Echo’s new trick around the whole house (you won’t be putting on backyard light shows, for example), but this could still save you some hassles when you just want to relax after a hard day.

If you aren’t an Amazon Prime subscriber, unfortunately you won’t get to take advantage of any of the deals. Lucky for you, though, you might not need to spend the $99 fee to get a one-year subscription to Prime, because right now, Amazon has dropped the off-contract price of its Fire Phone to just $159, which is just about a $20 discount. Plus, it comes with a one-year subscription to Prime ($99 value), so in all, you’re basically paying an extra $60 for the smartphone.
Some folks would say the device may not be worth the money, but considering this price point comes with a full year of Prime, we’d say it might be worth your while. It runs a heavily customized version of Android 4.4 KitKat and comes with a few arguably gimmicky features that many folks might not use too often. Even so, it comes with a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 32GB of on-board storage, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera and a 2400mAh battery.
While the specifications of the Fire Phone might not be worth $159, they’re certainly worth $59 with the added bonus of a Prime membership. There are plenty of ways to install Google Play Services on the device (even without rooting), which might make this a great option if you’re looking for a backup phone for emergency situations.
Taking into account all of the deals you might score during the upcoming Prime Day, this Fire Phone offer may be worth your consideration. If you’d like to take advantage of the deal or sign up for an Amazon Prime subscription, check out the links below.
[Deal] Amazon Fire Phone fire sale today
Amazon’s attempt to jump into the smartphone market with the Amazon Fire Phone fell far short of their success in the tablet and e-reader markets. This could be good news for buyers who are actually interested in the Fire Phone as Amazon likely needs to move some stock and to do so is running a special today only. The unlocked smartphone is currently listed for only $159 on Amazon.
The deal is really better than it initially sounds as Amazon is throwing in a free year of Prime membership valued at $99. If you are already a Prime member, you can still take advantage of this offer as Amazon will add the additional free year on your account when your existing membership comes up for renewal. Amazon also includes free cloud storage for all photos taken with the Fire Phone. Finally, a pair of Amazon Premium Headphones, valued at $19, will be included with the device. With the Fire Phone itself ending up being about $40 out of this whole package, one can see how far the device has fallen since being launched at a cost of $650 for the unlocked variant.

Amazon will stand trial for its ‘confusing’ search results
Have you ever searched for a product on Amazon, only to find a similar item from another company? Sure you have. But while this search behavior is arguably great for customers, it’s the reasoning behind a trademark lawsuit against the online retailer. “Military” watchmaker MTM has been pursuing Amazon since 2011 and, despite losing in a California federal court, it’s just won a 2-1 vote in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to have the case go to trial.
As Reuters reports, The argument MTM is making isn’t that Amazon is simply offering alternatives to its wares — it’s that there’s no indication that the site doesn’t sell MTM products at all. Try it yourself: go to amazon.com, type in a search for “MTM watch,” and see what comes up. We’re getting 51 hits for the term, none of which are actually timepieces made by the company. Because of this, the Court of Appeals says “a jury could find that Amazon has created a likelihood of confusion.”
The counter to this argument is that, while Amazon doesn’t specifically say it doesn’t sell MTM’s gear, it’s definitely not saying that any of the products on the list are made by the company. Indeed, the first page of results for the “MTM watch” search are clearly watches made by other companies such as Casio, Suunto, and Luminox. That’s why the Court of Appeals decision was split: the dissenting voice argued that “no reasonably prudent consumer accustomed to shopping online would likely be confused as to the source of the products.”

A search of Amazon UK for “lush,” lightly edited for clarity.
This case isn’t the first of its type — or even the first for the retailer. In the UK, cosmetics company Lush pursued Amazon for exactly the same thing: using searches for “Lush” to sell cosmetics not made by the company. Although it fought tooth and nail, Amazon eventually relented after losing the case. Any search for “Lush” on Amazon UK now brings up a nice clear notice saying “We don’t sell Lush cosmetics,” followed by the regular search results. Although trademark laws obviously differ between the UK and US, MTM at least has a ready-made example it can show a jury of what search results could look like.
