Amazon Echo update brings more features and adds Alexa Skills

amazon_echoThe Amazon Echo keeps getting better and better. Last update they added more sports scores while this update brings more support for Wink hub-connected products. Also, Alexa is getting third-party app support called Skills.

Wink hub-connected smart lights from Leviton and Lightify are now supported. Amazon already added support for Wink hub-connected products back in July, but more products added are always welcome.

The real new and exciting part of this update are some new Alexa skills. More will be added with future updates, but the ones you can use right now are SubHub, Math Puzzles, and Crystal Ball. To access them you have to turn Skills on in the Echo app. Once that is done you can ask it things like “Alexa, ask StubHub what is happening in Toronto this weekend” and it will respond back events that are going on.

Amazon is giving away $90 worth of free apps

Free Amazon Apps Aug 15 2015

Today, Amazon is giving away a selection of Android apps completely free. The deal is usually worth $90 in total, if you were to buy all of the apps individually.

Much of the selection is made up from games and includes popular titles such as Goat Simulator, Scribblenauts Remix and the original Fruit Ninja. There are also a couple of photo editing apps included in the deal, including a copy of Photo Lab PRO, which usually retails for $2.99. AVG AntiVirus PRO is the biggest saving that you can grab, as the security app usually costs $11.99.

As usual, these apps come from Amzaon’s app store rather than Google Play, so you will need to download Amazon’s software before you can claim your free apps.

This limited time offer is running until 11:59 on August 15th, which gives you a couple of days to pick out something that catches your fancy.

Add Google Cast to your Fire TV with an $8 app

Buyers remorse can be a terrible thing as you always wonder if you’d have been better off picking the other device when stood in the aisle at Best Buy. Thankfully if you’ve got $7.99 lying around and kinda regret grabbing Amazon’s Fire TV, then help is at hand thanks to YouMap. The app enables you to trick the hardware into thinking that it’s a Chromecast, letting you mirror your Chrome browsing or push YouTube clips straight from your smartphone. The app works for both the Fire TV and the stick, and while it won’t give you all the functionality of Google’s video dongle, you’ll at least be able to see how the other half live.

Panasonic Eluga Icon exclusive to Amazon India for Rs 10,999

Panasonic Eluga IconPanasonic has announced a new smartphone for the Indian market – the Eluga Icon. The handset is quite your typical mid-ranger and it will be available exclusively through Amazon India with a Rs. 10,999 price tag.

The Eluga Icon is a 5.5-inch handset, with a passable 720p (1280×720) display resolution. The phone is powered by a 64-bit 1.5GHz octa-core processor, quite likely a MediaTek MT7652, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage, with an expandable microSD card slot for an extra 32GB of space.

There’s a familiar 13 megapixel camera on the back with an LED flash and an 8 megapixel camera on the front of the phone for higher resolution selfies. The Eluga Icon also sports dual-SIM support and 4G LTE connectivity, along with a 3,500mAh battery. Very reasonable mid-range specifications, but the phone ships with a slightly older Android 4.4 KitKat OS, which doesn’t quite match up to other handsets in this price range which come with the latest version of Lollipop installed.

If you’re in the market for a lower cost handset, Panasonic also launched its low cost Love T10 and T33 smartphones earlier in the year. These phones are priced at less than Rs. 5,000 each. For the photography enthusiasts, the Panasonic Lumix CM1 landed in the US back in June too.

The Panasonic Eluga Icon will be available directly from Amazon India for Rs. 10,999 on August 14th. The handset is listed in a slate grey color.

Deal: 50 percent off PNY memory cards on Amazon

PNY microSD card

Expandable microSD memory may still be a sought-after feature, despite some OEMs dropping support with their recent phones, but it can be rather expensive to bulk your phone up with lots of additional storage. Fortunately, Amazon’s Deal of the Day is offering around 50 percent off a selection of PNY memory cards.

At the least expensive end, you can grab a 16GB PNY microSD card for just $6.99, a saving of $13 or 65 percent off the regular retail price of $19.99. If you are looking for a larger 128GB card to save movies and a big music collection on, then you can grab a high performance 60MB/sec card for $51.99, a saving of 48 percent. There are 32 and 64GB class 10 cards available too at similar discounts.

While you’re at it, the deal also includes full size SD cards for your other gadgets. PNY also has a selection of discounted USB sticks with capacities ranging from 16GB to 258GB included in the deal, with up to 78 percent of the RRP. Remember, you can connect USB flash drives up to most Android phones and tablets using a simple powered OTG cable.

Amazon Studios has two new pilots for you to judge

While Amazon has a track record to go by for its upcoming car show, it’s still crowdsourcing impressions for its new dramas. Today the service posted pilot episodes for two new series that it might pick up for streaming, and you can check them out for free. First up is the Brian Cranston-produced Sneaky Pete (not Skinny Pete, this is not a Breaking Bad spinoff), starring Giovanni Ribisi as an ex-con who has assumed the identity of his former cellmate. Meanwhile, Casanova is directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and stars Diego Luna (Y Tu Mama Tambien) telling the “true” story of the legendary playboy. Pilots for both are live for viewers in the US, UK and Germany, so watch and give your opinion — or just check out the newest clip for Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle, which debuts November 20th.

Amazon expands Prime Now one-hour deliveries to Birmingham

Londoners have been taking advantage of Amazon’s Prime Now one-hour delivery service for a little over a month now, and it’s time to afford others the same convenience. Today, Amazon has launched the speedy one-hour delivery option in Birmingham and surrounding areas, including Lichfield, Cannock and Tamworth. Expanding to other UK cities by the end of the year, Prime Now offers delivery on over 20,000 products within an hour for a £7 charge, or free same-day delivery within a two-hour window of your choice. You have to be an Amazon Prime member, of course, and all orders need to be placed through the Prime Now Android/iOS app — and to grease the wheels a little, Amazon is offering £20 off your first Prime Now order of £50 or above with the checkout code BIRMINGHAM. If you recall, Amazon’s rumoured to be bringing its Prime Fresh grocery-delivery service to London in the very near future, and considering today’s launch, perhaps we already know where that would be headed next.

Amazon’s UK Instant Video iOS app now supports HD streaming

With Amazon Instant Video set to become the new home of the Top Gear team, we’re sure many of you are looking at the value of a Prime subscription in a new light. And if you needed a little more persuading, perhaps the new features Amazon’s added to its Instant Video app for iOS will be enough push you over the edge. Most importantly, the updated app now lets you stream content to iDevices in high definition, a mobile feature previously reserved for Amazon’s Fire Phone and select Fire tablets. The other major change is you can now stream over mobile networks, not just WiFi, bringing the iOS app up to date with its Android counterpart. If these new features ring a bell, it’s probably because the iOS update dropped over in the US a few months ago, but better late than never — especially if you’re looking forward to Clarkson & Co returning to your screens next year. Let’s hope he can keep his fists to himself this time.
