Amazon Prime subscriptions include six months of The Washington Post
Amazon Prime members can add one more perk to the list of items that the annual subscription gets them. The online retailer announced today that Prime now includes six months of unlimited access to The Washington Post Digital Edition which usually costs $10/month. After the trial period is up, members are still privy to a reduced rate of $4/month. It should come as no surprise that the retailer and the newspaper are in cahoots as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos purchased the media outlet in 2013. What’s more, Bezos & Co. have been keen on offering access to The Washington Post in the past, bundling it with Kindle Fire tablets.

Here is what Amazon’s 10-inch Fire tablet looks like
We have all heard about Amazon’s plans to release an entry-level Fire tablet. The device, which is said to have a smaller display and $50 price tag, actually appeared on GFXBench earlier. That tablet doesn’t seem to be the only one coming from Amazon this year, though. This morning, Evan Blass shared an image of what is said to be a 10-inch Fire tablet. This would be Amazon’s first time releasing a device with a display larger than 8.9 inches.
Hit the break to see the device.
The software looks a little different, right? That’s because it more closely resembles Android, not just a forked version of it. The carousel that Amazon uses to keep the user interface simple is likely gone because of the display’s size. So now users are going to get a conventional layout courtesy of an app drawer. At the bottom of the display, too, are familiar on-screen buttons. And near the top is a search bar. Although it does look like Android, Amazon is probably going to continue using its Fire OS.
Being that the display is 10 inches, promoting the device in landscape orientation is ideal. Amazon, however, is showing the 10-inch Fire tablet in portrait orientation and the company logo is featured horizontally. In this position, the tablet looks very narrow. The front-facing camera is centered above the display and the rear camera is packed tightly into the top left corner. Power and volume buttons are also housed at the top of the device.

GFXBench listing reveals specifications of Amazon’s rumoured $50 tablet
While Amazon recently laid off some of its engineers after the Fire Phone failed to set the world alight, there has been persistent rumours that the global retailer is developing a budget-friendly tablet that could be priced at just $50. Amazon has so far declined to either confirm or deny the existence of such a project, although it has allegedly been spotted being put through its paces on GFXBench under the ‘Amazon KFFOWI’ moniker.
According to the GFXBench listing, the budget tablet will feature a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of just 1024 x 600, a quad-core MediaTek MT8127 processor, Mali-450 MP4 GPU, 1GB of RAM, and just 8GB of internal storage. There’s also a 1.8MP camera on the rear with a 0.3MP VGA camera on the front of the tablet.
While the benchmark states the KFFOWI tablet is running Android 5.1 Lollipop, it’s almost certainly going to Amazon’s forked version of the Android operating system. As you can tell, if the listing is accurate, this budget-friendly tablet is an entry-level device, which is perfectly fine if it comes in at the rumoured $50 price point.
The KFFOWI tablet isn’t a high-performance device, you won’t look at this tablet if you are looking to play resource hungry games, watch Full HD videos or to take high-quality pictures, but what it is, is a way for Amazon to open up its ecosystem to the entry-level market, especially if the tablet sold for just $50, which WSJ believes it will be. It will be interesting to see where and how Amazon market this tablet when it is launched, which is believed to next quarter.

Deal: Amazon Fire Phone only $119.99 (includes 1 year of Prime)

Amazon is no longer selling the Fire Phone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find it elsewhere. What’s even better, you could probably score a very good deal on the phone now that it’s officially “old”. In fact, we just came across the best discount we have ever seen on this phone.
You can now get the 32 GB version of the Amazon Fire Phone for only $119.99, as well as the 64 GB iteration for $149.99. And yes, this does include a 1-year membership to Amazon Prime, which usually costs $99. This pretty much means that the smartphone is costing you about $21. Yep, you will be hard pressed to find a better deal on a mid-end handset.

In addition, you will be glad to learn you have to deal with no coupon codes, rebates or anything of the sort. Just head over to QualityCellz’ eBay store and grab it! By the way, this seller has over 99% positive reviews (out of over 84,000), so you should have a good purchasing experience.
Need a memory refresher? The Amazon Fire Phone features a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 13 MP main camera, a 21 MP front shooter (with other sensors) and a 2400 mAh battery.
Not bad for $120, right? Especially when Amazon is still throwing in that Prime deal! Go get the phone while it’s hot; we don’t expect available units to stick around for long.

More Sony 4K TVs will support HDR color this fall
If you splurged on one of the many 4K TVs Sony released this year, you’re likely in for a treat. Sony is expanding the reach of its high dynamic range (HDR) color update to include more sets. It was originally destined for just the X930C and X940C, but the upgrade is now slated to reach the X850C, X900C and X910C this fall. If you’re one of the fortunate few in line for this image quality bump, you can expect more vivid colors, greater contrast and more details in both highlights and shadows.
And yes, Sony knows that this kind of improvement is meaningless without content. If you buy one of the supporting TVs “for a limited time,” you’ll get as much as $100 in HDR-enabled Sony movies from Amazon Video, like The Amazing Spider Man 2 and Fury. Amazon’s original shows will also display in HDR, of course. This still doesn’t give you a whole lot to watch, but at least it’s a free update — and if you need more titles, you can always snag an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

FCC listing hints at an Amazon Fire TV with microSD slot

Amazon hasn’t announced anything official about a next-gen Fire TV yet, but blogger Dave Zatz has spotted what could be an FCC filing for one. The documents call the device an “HDMI Digital Media Receiver” and were filed by a “Quill Royal LLC,” though it’s worth noting that Amazon uses shell names all the time. If this is indeed the next-gen Fire TV, then you can expect a more powerful device all around. It has an Ethernet and a USB port that can read flash drives, as well as a microSD card slot. The media player also supports 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1.
Back in July, some leaked benchmark results included those of a mystery gadget called “Amazon AFTS” with a chip that supports 4K video. It’s still unclear if that gadget and the device represented by this filing are one and the same, but people have been expecting a new Fire TV ever since the company stopped selling the first iteration. If you want to see a next-gen version of the media player, you may want to cross your fingers and hope that Amazon didn’t put a stop to its development like it did many of its other hardware projects.
Pretty sure I found the next Fire TV… sadly, the filings don’t cover video resolution, so 4k remains a question. http://t.co/6ujmBeMWH7

Amazon stops selling the Fire Phone
After roughly a year of dismal sales (and the resulting steep discounts), Amazon’s Fire Phone is no more. The internet retailer has confirmed to GeekWire that it sold its remaining stock of the Fire OS-powered smartphone at the end of August. There’s no mention of whether or not this is a sign of a sequel — the more successful Fire TV is also sold out, we’d note — but you shouldn’t count on it. Reports claim that Amazon is chopping both future phones and other hardware projects as a result of the Fire Phone’s failure, so this will likely join the annals of one-and-done flops like the HTC First and Microsoft’s Kin series.
This is an ignominious end to what was supposed to be Amazon’s triumphant moment, but it wasn’t hard to predict even when the Fire Phone was fresh. The centerpiece Dynamic Perspective feature (which altered the on-screen content depending on your gaze) was widely considered a novelty. Moreover, the heavily customized Android interface that did reasonably well on Fire tablets was unintuitive and limiting here. It was designed to boost Amazon’s sales (Firefly object scanning, anyone?), not to help you use your phone. Combine these with slightly behind-the-times specs, poor battery life, a limited app ecosystem and an AT&T exclusive, and it was hard to justify a Fire Phone in favor of the many more practical alternatives.

Amazon takes down listing of Fire Phone
It seems that Amazon has stopped production of its Fire Phone. The smartphone is currently listed as “unavailable” on the company’s website and includes a side note that says it doesn’t know when or if the item will be back in stock. It looks like this could be the end of the road for the device.
Amazon was devastated with the sales of its Fire Phone and has decided to move on. It doesn’t look like Amazon will be releasing another Fire Phone in the future, however recent reports have suggested a budget tablet is in the works. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard any details since the initial rumor.
During its time to shine, the Fire Phone only managed to sell about 13,000 devices. Which was far off the company’s predictions. If you happen to be still interested in buying one, you’ll have to try an snag one on Ebay when they pop up.
Recently, one of Amazon’s chief executives stated the company was laying off dozens of employees. He/she also gave us a brief overview of the company’s upcoming plans for the remainder of 2015 year. We’ll keep a close eye on any news associated with the company’s plans moving forward.
