Best Buy hopes same-day delivery will fend off Amazon

Best Buy Store

Online retailers like Amazon are putting the pressure on brick-and-mortar retail spaces by offering cheap and speedy delivery of goods, with same-day — and in some cases one-hour — deliveries to metro areas around the country. In a bid to keep up with the competition, Best Buy is testing a same-day delivery service with the help of delivery service Deliv. Currently being tested in San Francisco, same-day delivery will cost Best Buy customers the same amount as one-day business express shipping. The company is marketing the service to online shoppers as an alternative to its in-store pickup option. It will be interesting to see whether people in San Fransico will continue to collect their goods from a physical store when they can now opt to get it delivered to them — probably as they stream Amazon Prime Video from the comfort of their sofa.

Gadgets galore: Amazon has already kicked off its Black Friday deals

Amazon CountDown to Black Friday

There may still be pretty much a full month to wait until Black Friday, but Amazon has decided to kick start the shopping discounts with its “countdown to Black Friday” sale, which has gone live today. It’s a little bizarre, I know.

As we covered earlier, the Moto X (2014) is in there for just $199.99, and there are plenty of other gadgets up for grabs. Including a digital infra-red thermometer, up to $200 off digital cameras, and 40 percent of 4K LG TVs. Here’s a list of some of the other deals on offer, according to Amazon.

  • Motorolo Moto X (second generation) for $199.99
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for $39.99
  • 30% off Sony XBR55X900C 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD TV with a Blu-ray Player
  • $170 off the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens
  • 47% off Jaybird X Sport Bluetooth Headphones
  • Optima HD37 Full 3D 1080p 2600 Lumens DLP Home Cinema Projector for less than $800
  • 40% off select toys from top construction brands including K’NEX, Tegu, and Magformer
  • Up to 50% off select Home Automation products
  • Up to 50% off hundreds of PetSafe items

If that isn’t enough for you, Amazon is also offering Prime members access to more than 30,000 “Lightening Deals” a full 30 minutes before everyone else. Which will give them an advantage on some of the sales that have more limited stock.

Amazon will be offering various discounts right until December 22nd, so there’s plenty of time to track down something that you like.

Amazon tries to one-up Black Friday (again) with a 7-week sale

Grand Opening Of Amazon Fulfillment Center Features State Of The Art Technology

Remember how Amazon trumped Black Friday with its Prime Day sale? No? We can’t blame you — the offerings were so modest that you had a better chance finding bargains at a garage sale. That isn’t stopping Amazon from giving it another shot, however. It’s launching a Black Friday Deals page that will offer discounts from now until December 22nd. Yes, that’s an attempt to spread one day of frenetic shopping across 7 weeks. Prime subscribers will get first crack, naturally.

Amazon deal: The Moto X (2014) can be yours for just $199

moto x deal

Amazon is kicking off Black Friday deals early, very early. The retail giant just announced that its promo campaign starts today, and one of the standout deals is the Moto X (2nd generation) for $199.

The 2nd generation Moto X gives you a beautiful Full HD AMOLED display of 5.2 inches, a capable Snapdragon 810 processor with 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera, and a 2,300 mAh battery.
Everything is packed inside a sleek design with a metallic frame and a choice of black leather, black soft touch plastic, or bamboo. The device runs Android 5.1 right now, but Motorola promised a speedy update to Marshmallow.

The Moto X 2nd generation is a little over one year old, and, at $199, it’s an excellent deal. The device normally goes for $300 on Amazon.

The deal is valid through the next 18 hours, but we imagine that there will be a lot of demand for what likely limited quantities.

This being an unlocked device, it will work with AT&T or T-Mobile (and their respective MVNOs). It’s highly advised to check out the LTE bands in your specific area before you purchase a phone.

For more details on the Moto X 2014, check out our full review. Happy shopping!

Amazon to deliver ‘Call of Duty’ at midnight on release day in 20 cities

Going the physical route on day one videogame releases has always meant either braving an in-store midnight event or waiting for a package to be delivered. In the case of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Amazon has an alternative: midnight delivery straight to your door, at no extra charge. In 20 metropolitan areas (Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, Minneapolis, Orange County, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle) it promises to drop the game off — along with any snacks you might order — within a two hour window on November 6th through its Prime Now one-hour option.

Amazon’s Prime Music stores tracks on an SD card

To help you conserve that limited storage space on your Android device, Amazon is letting you download Prime Music tracks to an SD card. If your go-to device has a slot for extra memory, you’ll be able to store music from Amazon’s streaming library for offline listening. As you might expect, you can download any purchased albums and songs there, too. In addition to the storage update, you can now control the audio and browse the app from your Android Wear device. The service also gained expanded artist pages and tabs for new and popular music to keep you up to date on what’s fresh. The latest version of Prime Music for Android is rolling out now, so if you’re not seeing the new features, they should arrive shortly.

Amazon will ditch its daily local deals on December 18

If you’re the sort of person who really likes getting $50 of seafood for $25, your day just got a little more depressing. Amazon just announced that it would stop selling those sorts of daily deals from both its AmazonLocal site and its corresponding app on December 18th. Don’t worry if you’ve loaded already up your calendar with days-long real estate courses and cheap car washes — any vouchers you already have, or buy before the deadline, will remain valid.

‘Pay with Amazon’ buttons are coming to third-party mobile apps

France Amazon

Amazon’s making it even easier for you to spend your money outside of its own site. Re/code reports that the online retailer is expanding Pay with Amazon, which lets customers use their saved payment info for third-party purchases, to mobile applications. Essentially, this means developers can start taking advantage of the feature on any app they make, giving people a familiar option to use during checkout time. Amazon has been offering the service for a couple of years now, though it was limited to desktop sites, rather than including smartphone or tablet apps. It’s too early to tell how many devs will start adopting the buttons, but Pay with Amazon does offer a quick, secure and, most importantly, familiar way for users to shell out more cash — and that may be hard to pass on.
