Wheelchair controlled using Amazon Echo
Amazon’s Echo device is slowly but surely catching on as a popular voice-control appliance. To help sales grow, Amazon has been partnering with a variety of other companies producing connected home devices so Echo can be integrated with those systems. Like all things digital, modifying a device like Echo to work in new, perhaps unexpected way, is not limited to official partnerships between big corporations. Sometimes a single hacker can do some pretty amazing stuff, like a recent proof of concept showing how an Amazon Echo could be used to control a power wheelchair.
For his project, Bob Paradiso decided to use the Echo’s “Alexa, turn on ____” and “Alexa, turn off ____” commands. Normally these would be used to specify a device like lights. Paradiso also had to overcome some other limitations connected to the limited commands available at present and the fact that commands are uploaded to Amazon. To get around those limitations, he decided to insert a Raspberry Pi in the process and use it to run a Hue Bridge Emulator. This makes the Echo think it is controlling Hue light bulbs, but the commands are intercepted, processed and delivered to the wheelchair.
The end result is the ability to issue a command to the wheelchair that combines a direction with a number of seconds that it should be activated. For example, “Alexa, right four” would cause the wheelchair to rotate to the right for four seconds.
Paradiso notes that the implementation is far from being useful for deployment, especially for someone that requires the use of a motorized wheelchair. There are no safety features currently implemented and issues with voice recognition and delays would likely cause challenges for actual use. The project does serve as a sort of proof of concept though and as Paradiso notes, “something to frame a discussion around.”

OnePlus X shows up at Amazon India, stock is limited

The new OnePlus X is gradually heading out to countries around the world and the smartphone has just arrived in India, courtesy of Amazon.
The handset is retailing for Rs. 16,999 and comes with free delivery within 2 – 4 business days. EMI is also available and starts at Rs. 1,518.30 per month. Before we get ahead of ourselves though, you will still need an invite before you can make your purchase. But at least these seem more readily available this time around than they were at the launch of the OnePlus 2.
For a quick recap, the OnePlus X comes with a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,525 mAh battery, and a 13MP rear camera. The phone has come in for some criticism for its older SoC and lack of features such as NFC or a fingerprint scanner, but there’s some pretty decent hardware here for the money.
More coverage: OnePlus X hands-on and first impressions!
The company also recently announced a new warranty scheme for its smartphones, which will apply to the OnePlus X as well as the OnePlus 2. The scheme offers additional protection against accidental damage on top of the standard 1 year manufacturer warranty, so might be worth checking out.
There is only a limited amount of stock available from Amazon India, so order quantities are restricted to just one per customer, if you just so happen to have multiple invites. The handset will be in stock come November 6th and should begin shipping out on November 7th. Click below and head on over to grab yourself an OnePlus X.
Amazon UK Prime members get free same-day deliveries
In its bid to get more products to customers quicker, Amazon UK has today added another delivery option for customers. Prime Same Day offers (you guessed it) same-day delivery on one million products, as long as you’re already signed up to the company’s £79 annual membership. Unlike Prime Now, which costs £6.99 and gets your items to you within an hour, Amazon’s new shipping option is free.

Game streamer Hitbox takes on Twitch with 4K eSports broadcasts
Pop quiz hotshot: Name a game broadcasting service that isn’t Twitch, YouTube Gaming or MLG.tv. Give up? You’re forgiven. Vienna-based Hitbox.tv is relatively new to the space and its looking to make a name for itself by offering features that the competition doesn’t. Like streaming eSports events in 4K at 60FPS starting this fall, for instance. As Twitch expands into more and more non-gaming avenues, Hitbox thinks it can serve the core crowd that might feel alienated by those moves. The Austrian company has picked up some new investments recently — most notably from the folks behind World of Tanks, Wargaming. A canned statement from the latter says that forthcoming games will “integrate game data” into broadcasts and that it should be pretty easy to do so. Hitbox also offers a wide-open revenue split system that every broadcaster has access to, rather than Twitch’s curated Partner program highlighting its top broadcasters.

Apple, Google and Others Form Coalition to Push Technology in Financial Sector
A handful of technology giants — including Apple, Amazon, Google, PayPal, and Intuit — have announced a partnership in the formation of the Financial Innovation Now coalition (via Re/code). The group aims to promote tech-friendly policies and changes within the financial services sector in Washington, D.C. Those behind the group will work to alter the political debate on relevant issues like tech security, mobile payments, and fraud prevention in the favor of its partners.
“A technological transformation is going to make financial services more accessible, more affordable and more secure,” said Brian Peters, executive director of Financial Innovation Now. “The challenge in Washington is making sure policy-makers understand that, and they’re comfortable with it, and they don’t apply old rules to new technology.”
Thanks to the growing popularity of mobile payments solutions like Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and PayPal, the companies behind such services are positioning themselves as part of the future in financial services discussions in Washington, since they’re more part of the conversation than ever before. The partnership also intends to work together to achieve blanket improvements for each individual service in topics like user security and authentication, faster payment processing, and “access to basic financial services for the two billion people in the world who are underserved.”

Amazon opens first physical bookstore in Seattle
It may feel odd associating Amazon with a brick-and-mortar store, but you’ll get used to it. The online marketplace will open its first physical outlet at University Village, an open-air shopping center in Seattle, on Tuesday. It won’t be selling everything under the sun like its website, though: it’s a true-blue bookstore — though it will carry Kindle e-readers — just like the thousands of bookstores that shuttered in the past due to the rise in e-book sales. One difference is that most goods inside Amazon Books will be displayed face-out instead of stacked with their spines in view. Also, the company will take advantage of the data it’s collected for the past two decades to stock books that have the potential to sell.
