Shoppers loved Amazon’s Fire and Fire TV Stick during the holidays

amazon_logo_kindle_hd

When you’re selling a tablet for $50, people question the quality of the hardware and software. It wouldn’t be surprising for a tablet that cheap to have an ugly, thick body and laggy software. But Amazon seems to have found an incredible value in the Fire. The $50 price unlocks access to Amazon’s large catalog of content. And it turns out that holiday shopper loved the tablet because Amazon says the Fire was the best-selling, most wished-for, and most gifted item on the company’s site during the holidays.

Amazon’s Fire was the best-selling item on the company’s site during the holidays, fulfilling the wishlist of millions of people. Not far behind were the Echo and Fire TV Stick, two products also developed by Amazon. The Echo ranked very high on the most-wished for and gifted items lists while the Fire TV Stick was the company’s third best-selling item.

Nearly two hundred countries received shipments from Amazon, totally over 200 million items.

Video streaming, too, was a big component for Amazon’s success at the end of 2015. Prime Video streaming doubled compared to last year, largely due to multiple Amazon Originals garnering nominations and awards. Amazon Studios saw TransparentMozart in the JungleCatastrophe, and The Man in the High Castle earn critical acclaims.

Altogether, Amazon was able to double sales of their own devices. This shows that Amazon is quietly building itself a respectable ecosystem full of content for its own hardware. Between tablets and media players, the company has movies, television shows, music, and games to explore. Perhaps the only form factor Amazon needs to work on is the phone. Because, remember, Amazon’s first attempt at a phone was…. not good. Since the company canned the team behind the phone, we’re probably going to be waiting for a bit to see the Fire Phone’s successor.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who also founded the company, commented on the company’s success during the holidays:

“This was another great holiday season to be a Prime member, and we welcomed three million new members in the week of December alone.

On behalf of Amazon employees around the world, we wish everyone happy holidays and the very best for the coming year.”

Check out the press release below for Amazon’s entire roundup of its holiday performance in 2015.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome back to the last edition of Android Apps Weekly in 2015! We’d like to thank you for another 52 weeks of tuning in each week to catch the latest app news. Let’s get to the headlines:

  • A little more news leaked out about Nintendo’s upcoming Android game this week. It’s been all but confirmed that it’s going to be a social media style app and the clothing items will be used to customize your avatar. We’re not sure where the game part is yet, but we’ll find out eventually.
  • Last week we reported that there were 35 awesome games on sale on Google Play. That list has been updated and there are now over 85 titles available right now with a varying amount of discounts. Some of the games include most of Square Enix’s library, Half-Life 2, Worms 2, NBA JAM, most of Kemco’s library, and plenty of others. Check it out before these deals end.
  • In an effort to show people that the Play Store is more than just apps and games, Google Play is having a promotion to get users into the other parts of the store. Until January 4th, you can get 3 months of Google Play Music for $1, some Google Play Books titles are up to 80% off, and movie rentals are up to 75% off.
  • In perhaps one of the best news stories of the year, it was announced that The Beatles were coming to streaming services for the first time in most markets. As of now, you can listen to the fab 4 on Apple Music, Google Play Music, Microsoft Groove, Rhapsody, Amazon Prime Music, Slacker, Spotify, and Tidal.
  • It’s been rumored that Google is creating another messaging service and this one is a little bit different. Instead of the usual paradigm where you can chat and stuff, this new service is rumored to have a ton of bots that will chat with you, make recommendations, and fetch information. We’ll have to see what happens if this rumor turns out to be true.

For even more Android apps and games headlines, updates, and new releases, don’t forget to check out this week’s newsletter where we’ll have all the information from the last week. If you want, you can subscribe using the form below and we’ll send the newsletter to your inbox every Sunday!

Launcher X Android Apps WeeklyLauncher X

[Price: Free / $4.99]
Launcher X is a fairly new launcher that seems to blend a simple premise with some complex ideas. It’s built on the AOSP 3 launcher so it’s fairly close to stock in terms of performance and look but the developers have added plenty of extra goodies. They include a metric ton of customization options, gesture control, swipe-able docks, a slide out drawer, and you can even recreate Google Now Launcher’s functionality. It’s new, which means it’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s worth a shot!

Space Jet Android Apps WeeklySpace Jet

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Space Jet is an online aviation shooter where you fly a spaceship and shoot down other people who are also flying space ships. The controls are surprisingly good and the game is actually quite a bit of fun to play. As you play, you unlock upgrades for your spaceship that can do more damage, give you powers like camouflage, and a lot more. It is a freemium game so there is a bit of a pay-to-win mechanic and there are some ads here and there, but it’s an above average multiplayer shooter.

Metro 2033 Android Apps WeeklyMetro 2033: Wars

[Price: $7.99]
Metro 2033: Wars is an open world strategy game based on the book of the same name. You play in a post apocalyptic wasteland as you do battle with rival factions. You’ll also be tasked with strengthening and improving your specific Metro Station which adds bits of simulation and city-building elements as well. It’s a tad expensive but it is a pay-once game with no in-app purchases and it’s a great pick-up if you like strategy games.

Lego Android Apps WeeklyLEGO Nexo Knights

[Price: Free]
LEGO Nexo Knights is the newest game from LEGO that’s meant to accompany the short series of videos that follow the same story line. This is a hack’n’slash style of game where you must defeat the evil Jestro to save the kingdom. This is meant to be played with accompanying action figures which can be scanned for additional powers but it’s playable without them as well. It’s good for older kids and it’s also free with no in-app purchases.

Gods of Rome Android Apps WeeklyGods of Rome

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Gods of Rome is the latest release out of Gameloft and, interestingly enough, this one is a fighting game. It’s sort of a callback to the fighting games of old and the mechanics are similar to games such as Injustice and Soul Calibur. There is actually a story to this one and your role is to fight to restore peace in your era. It’s simple, yes, but fighting games generally are. It’s a Freemium game so you can expect some pay-to-win mechanics, but overall it’s not half bad.

Deal: Amazon Video offering 75% off any movie rental

Amazon_Instant_Video

‘Tis the season to give, so Amazon is not staying behind these holidays. Only a couple days after the Google Play Store began offering 75% off any one movie rental, Amazon is following suit with an identical offer.

You can now grab any movie rental from the popular online retailer with a 75% discount. The offer is not as straight forward, though. You do have to go through a couple extra steps, including the use of a coupon code (not like that is really an issue). Here’s how you can redeem this offer.

How to get 75% off any Amazon movie rental:

  1. Go to the Amazon Video website.
  2. Select your movie of choice (it has to be available for rent).
  3. From the movie’s page, select the “More Purchase Options” link.
  4. Click on “Redeem a gift card or promotion code”.
  5. Sign into your Amazon account (if you haven’t).
  6. Under the “Enter a New Code” section, input coupon code “MOVIE75OFF”.
  7. Complete your rental. The discounted price will show up in your history.

There’s plenty of options to choose from, so you are bound to have some fun with the family during the holiday season. But before you move on, let’s remind you of certain things to keep in mind. For starters, you can only redeem this offer for a single movie rental (per person/account). Furthermore, the deal ends at 11:59 PM PST on January 4th. For all the terms of service, visit this page.

So there you have it, guys! Go get your movie watching on. Which movie are you guys renting?

Deal: BLU Studio Energy 2 selling for $130 ($50 off) on Amazon, has a 5000 mAh battery

Blu studio energy 2 amazon deal

If you are on the look out for a budget Android smartphone under $150 that that also offers a (really) long battery life, then this killer deal is meant for you. The BLU Studio Energy 2, released in October this year, is now selling on Amazon for only $130. That’s $50 knocked off its retail price, making it a lucrative deal for budget smartphone hunters.

What makes this BLU phone so special is that it packs a gigantic 5000 mAh battery, which is sure to last at least two days thanks to the device’s modest 5-inch HD (1280 x 720) Super AMOLED display and 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor. The MediaTek chipset in question is made of four energy-efficient ARM Cortex A53 cores and is paired with a Mali-T720 GPU.

For $130, you get a recently released smartphone that offers 1.5GB of RAM, 8MP rear and 5MP selfie cameras, 16GB of expandable storage via microSD slot (up to 64GB), Dual SIM slots, and support for 4G LTE networks. The device runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, which may not be the latest version of Android OS around, but for a device in this budget range it’s still great.

Don’t buy this phone expecting software upgrades to new versions of Android OS. It’s something we absolutely can’t promise. However, do buy this phone if you’re looking for a quality Android handset to function as a backup phone with a long battery life. Or perhaps if you’re on a tight budget and still want a decent quality handset without compromising on the display, battery life and other critical aspects of a smartphone.

[Deal] You don’t want to miss this deal for the Nexus 6

Early on Black Friday, Motorola surprised everyone with an incredible sale where you get the 32GB Nexus 6 for only $250. Well that deal is back on and you can head over to Amazon and grab the 32GB Nexus 6 in either Cloud White or Midnight Blue.

The Nexus 6 has seen quite a fluctuation in pricing even before the release of this years Nexus devices, the Huawei Nexus 6P and the LG Nexus 5X. However, at $250 for a brand new device, this is by far the best deal we’ve seen for the Nexus 6.

You’ll want to act fast because at the time of this writing the 64GB variants have already sold out, but both the Cloud White and Midnight Blue are still available in 32GB. If you want a device to test drive Marshmallow and all the new features coming out for Android, but you don’t want to break the bank, then this is a deal you simply cannot pass up on.

With its 6″ display, huge 3220mAh battery, and timely updates, the Nexus 6 is still the perfect device for that Android lover that you know. We can also count on the Nexus 6 having continued support from the rooting community, even after the updates from Google stop rolling in.

It’s also worth noting that this deal is for the Unlocked variant of the Nexus 6, meaning that it will work on any GSM carrier, and will even work with those on Verizon. Additionally, this deal comes with a one year warranty directly from Motorola, so you’ll have some help if you have any issues with your device.

Drop us a line and let us know whether you were able to jump on this great deal, or if you were able to grab one during the last round of price cuts.

Xiaomi’s YI Home Camera now available for purchase on Amazon

Xiaomi YI Home CameraEarlier this month, Xiaomi partnered with Amazon to sell their YI Action Camera in the US. Apparently, that deal has gone pretty well for both companies, as Xiaomi is now also selling the YI Home Camera on Amazon, too.

The Home Camera is obviously a little different than the Action Camera, as its designed to sit in one place and act more like a monitor and less like a camcorder. The feature list on it is just as impressive, though, offering infrared night vision, full 720p video capture, 4x digital zoom, and the ability to stream directly to your smartphone. If you’re interested in using it as a security device, it also supports notifications when detecting movement. It also stores everything locally on an SD card, so it’s an extremely secure solution with no subscription fees to use it.

Xiaomi YI Home Camera 2

At just $59, this little guy looks like it offers a fantastic connected camera for your home. It’s cheaper than many alternatives and won’t cost you anything past the initial setup, and you can even get it shipped to your house by Christmas if you order it now.

Be sure to check out the companion app for it, too.

Amazon is reportedly leasing jets to power shipping network

Amazon-branded trailers aren’t all the online retailer has planned to improve is shipping network. The Seattle Times reports that Jeff Bezos & Co. are in talks to lease a fleet of Boeing jets to handle the air cargo duties. As the company looks to avoid the headaches of using UPS and other carriers, it has already put a group of trailers on the road to carry loads to its distribution centers.

Amazon is reportedly looking to lease 20 Boeing 767s for the task. Doing so would give the company more control over delivery times, and potentially bypass cargo services of UPS, FedEx and the USPS. Of course, Amazon still relies on those outfits to get packages to your door, so it’s more likely the company is just looking to streamline the supply chain… for now. However, The Seattle Times also reports that the retailer could open up extra space on its jets to other companies, which would put it in direct competition with the likes of UPS, FedEx and others.
