Authors take out full-page NYT ad to criticize Amazon
There’s no sign that Amazon and Hachette are close to burying their e-book hatchet, which has prompted the authors caught in the middle to speak up. One of those affected, Douglas Preston, penned an open letter to Jeff Bezos, requesting that he stopped singling out individual Hachette authors for “selective retaliation.” After it was published, however, nearly a thousand other writers, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell and Jeffrey Deaver co-signed the letter — which has prompted the group Authors United to pay for the letter to be printed as a full-page advert in Sunday’s New York Times. Apparently the Kindle Team’s most recent letter fell upon deaf ears.

Amazon lets Fire TV and Android gamers work together in two-player mode
If you heard that Amazon was launching an app on Google Play, you’d be entitled to hope that it’d be the long-awaited Instant Video for Android. Prepare to be disappointed, since the company’s actually released Sev Zero: Air Support for tablets that don’t have the words “kindle” and “fire” in their name. It’s a companion piece to the Amazon-made Sev Zero game that debuted on the Fire TV, enabling a second player to join in on the tower defense-cum-fps-style fun. Still, maybe next time on that whole video app, please Jeff?

Microsoft OneDrive arrives on Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Fire phone
Folks who fancy Amazon’s Kindle Fire and/or newfangled Fire phone just got another option for go-to cloud access. Microsoft has released a OneDrive app outfitting both of the aforementioned devices with easy access to stored files from the slate or handset. Of course, we’d surmise most OneDrive users have hitched their wagons to Redmond’s own fleet of OSes. At any rate, apps now exist not only for the web retailer’s gadgets, but for PC and Mac with mobile options on Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10. Bases covered. Microsoft’s OneNote also sorts those trusty reminders and to-do lists across the Fire fleet, too. Ready to employ this version? Head over to Amazon’s Appstore to do just that.

Amazon’s same-day delivery expands in six cities
If you’re the sort who just can’t wait to get household goods but cringe at having to brave the lines at the local store, today might be your lucky day. Amazon has officially expanded its same-day delivery options in six cities that include Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. You can now order from a catalog of a million common items (such as movies, games and supplies) and expect to get the shipment within hours. You can pull the trigger as late as 12:15PM in most places, and up to 1PM in Baltimore and Washington. Just be prepared to pay for those urgent arrivals. As before, same-day shipping costs $10 (plus 99 cents for every extra item) if you’re an ordinary customer, and $6 for all items if you’re a Prime subscriber.

Amazon Fire TV scores live video apps for Disney, MLB and WWE
The launch of Flappy Bird Family last week probably wasn’t going to make you rush to buy a Fire TV any time soon, but don’t worry — Amazon has a few more aces up its sleeve. The Android-powered media hub is now getting a slew of extra apps, many of which expand the video selection to areas that Amazon simply can’t cover. You can now tune into MLB.tv and WWE Network if you need a live sports fix (real or otherwise), and you can entertain your kids with Animal Planet and Watch Disney. If you’re the patient type, you’ll also be glad to hear that NFL Now, Watch ABC, A&E and Dailymotion are due later this year. These additions likely won’t make you chuck your Apple TV or Roku box, but they might get you thinking about a Fire TV if you’d previously ruled it out.

Flappy Bird Family makes your Fire TV five times as fun
A family that flaps together, stays together. As promised, the creator of Flappy Birds — you know, the insanely viral and addictive game that enjoyed massive success before quickly being removed from the iOS and Android app stores — is bringing a new version of his prized title to the Amazon Fire TV. Not only will you be able to relive the wonderful memory of topping your high score of 14, you can do so while pitted against other players in a multiplayer, dual-screen setup. There’s no word on if the game will make its way to iOS or Android eventually. But in the meantime, get grandma, the kids and your cousins into the living room, power up the Fire TV and see which one is the best at navigating an 8-bit bird through a series of Mario pipes. (Our vote’s on grandma.)

Amazon’s offering 30 free Android apps to help make you a better person
Another month, another batch of 30 free Android apps courtesy of Amazon. Like the bookseller’s last Appstore promotion, the “Summer Self-Improvement Bundle” features $100/£100′s worth of complimentary apps, as long as you download them within the next two days (so don’t leave it ’til the weekend, basically). On-theme apps include exercise, nutrition, sleep, budgeting and learning aids, while games such as Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Carcassonne should provide a little entertainment. Other notable freebies include Kayak Pro for travel planning and management, and popular read-it-later app Instapaper. Remember, Amazon’s Appstore is available to any Android device (some side-loading required), not that we’re saying you could use a little self-improving. You’re perfect just the way you are.
