Amazon gives UK customers early e-book access with Kindle First

While Amazon tends to release new e-reader and tablet hardware in the UK and US simultaneously these days, we’re still not top priority when it comes to new services. That being said, the UK has caught up significantly in the past week with the launch of the all-you-can-read Kindle Unlimited subscription and now, Kindle First. Amazon runs a bunch of publishing houses, and what Kindle First offers is early access to new releases originating from them. Each month, Amazon editors will select four books scheduled for publication the following month, and let you buy one (and only one) of them in e-book form for 99 pence, or snag one for free if you’re a Prime member. Once you’ve registered, it’s basically as simple as that. You can head to the Kindle First page now to check out the selections for this month, and sign up for the newsletter if you’d like to know when other titles become available for pre-release reading.

Authors will fire back at Amazon with calls for a government investigation

If you’ve been following the protracted war between Amazon and Hachette, you know that Amazon’s been stymieing sales of certain books by making it impossible to pre-order them, and pushing back delivery of others all over a e-book contract dispute. The situation isn’t really even about Hachette any more — the New York Times notes that few of the hundreds of signers of a recent open letter to Amazon’s board of directors are even published by the French firm. It’s about something more fundamental. Those authors (or at least a decent chunk of them) now plan to call on the Department of Justice to formally investigate Amazon for monopolistic activity.

To quote recent signer Ursula K. LeGuin, the big issue at stake here is censorship — “Amazon is using censorship to gain total market control so they can dictate to publishers what they can publish, to authors what they can write, to readers what they can buy. This is more than unjustifiable, it is intolerable.” By trying to squeeze certain unlucky authors out of the sales charts by dint of their publisher, Amazon has riled up an incredibly savvy, literate, smart group of people who know how to use their voices — not exactly the sort you’d want to make enemies out of. Last we heard, the final draft of the letter (which will be sent to the head of the department’s antitrust division) should be done — now we’ve got to wait for everyone to sign it.

Goodreads on iOS looks and acts a lot like Facebook now

Old books leaning against each other for sale

Short of appearing on Kindle products, since Amazon bought Goodreads we haven’t seen much new in the application. That’s all changed, however, as the iOS app has gotten an overhaul. As TechCrunch notes, upon opening it you’re greeted with a news feed that’s filled with your pals’ activity (including books reviewed and read), and you can like or comment on it as such. There’s a new navigation pane at the bottom of the application, too, that offers quick access to the home screen and a barcode scanner for adding tomes to your “to read” list, among other things. What’s more, creating a custom bookshelf for, say, your list of favorite tween-zombie-romance-nonfiction books is apparently pretty easy now as well. There isn’t an update for the Android version just yet, but we’ve embedded screenshots after the break if you want a preview of what the app’ll look like on your iDevice.

Amazon’s latest free Android app bundle includes a $59 dictionary

Amazon sure loves giving away free apps, and today sees the start of its third Appstore promotion in almost as many months. If you’re not following, Amazon’s Android Appstore already offers a different piece of paid software for free each day. Lately, though, it’s been discounting collections of apps for a limited time, like with the new “work, play & watch” bundle. In total, there are 27 apps worth around $135/£100 up for grabs until September 27th (this Saturday). It’s not the most attractive buffet, but Riptide GP2, SketchBook Pro and the Swype keyboard are notable inclusions, with the most expensive being OfficeSuite Professional 7 (usually $14.99/£9.36) and the latest edition Merriam-Webster dictionary (normally $59/£34.44). Anyway, you may as well check out the full selection in case you spot anything you like; and remember, Amazon’s Appstore isn’t just available on its own hardware, but to anyone with an Android device and a few spare minutes.

Amazon lets you fill out your wish list with the help of a hashtag

Look beyond the lightspeed rush of news and one-liners and you’ll see a Twitter that’s slowly morphing into a place where you can buy stuff. Amazon seems to be coming to grips with that peculiar truth, which is why it cooked up another way to use the social service to discover and covet the gewgaws people tweet about. Assuming you’ve already hooked up your Twitter account, try responding to tweets including Amazon product links with #AmazonWishList – they’ll instantly be added to (what else?) your wish list for easy buying down the road. It’s useful enough what with the holiday shopping season nearly upon us, but let’s face it: this just gives Amazon more reason to fill your feed with products you may or may not actually need. We just wish we could fill our Amazon carts directly with a tweet, and we’d be shocked if the folks in Seattle haven’t started thinking about it already.

Amazon’s eyeing wearables and automated homes next

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos

One of the nice things about operating the world’s biggest online retail store, besides the money, is that you can get a real-time picture of what consumers around the globe want. Amazon’s used that insight to launch its own e-readers, tablets and a smartphone in the past, and it’s certainly not stopping there. According to Reuters, Jeff Bezos is investing heavily to boost the headcount of its secretive Lab126 division, the designers of Amazon’s mobile devices, so that it can begin exploring new trends in smart homes and also wearables.

The team is reportedly already testing a WiFi-enabled device that can be placed in a kitchen or cupboard, allowing customers to order detergent with the push of a button. Sources say Amazon wants to equip homes with sensors that can identify when an appliance needs a service or requires a replacement part. Like how the Fire phone can recognize books and media, the retailer could offer devices that take the friction out of ordering the household items customers want. It would certainly differentiate it from rivals like Google’s Nest, which are currently focused on reducing energy consumption and making appliances smarter, but those close to the matter are quick to note that Amazon’s ideas might never make the light of day. That said, Bezos and co. definitely keen to expand its tech-focused workforce, regardless of what we might see in the future.

Amazon brings Kindle Unlimited e-book subscriptions to the UK

Amazon's Kindle Unlimited

Whether we like it or not, Amazon nearly always launches its new products and services in the US first. It happened with its Fire-branded tablets, set-top box and smartphone. The same can be said for its all-you-can-read e-book service, Kindle Unlimited, which after two months of availability stateside has today made its debut on the online retailer’s UK store. For £7.99 a month, Amazon offers unlimited access to over 650,000 digital books (50,000 less than in the US) and thousands of audiobooks, which can be synced across e-readers, tablets and Amazon’s numerous mobile apps. While you won’t find books from many of the major publishing houses, Amazon does offer the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series, as well as a vast number of Kindle originals. Good news for jetsetters, commuters and maybe also Kindle owners waiting for Kindle Unlimited to launch in other European countries, but some already believe Amazon’s new service poses a very real threat to local libraries.
