That can’t be good: Amazon has revealed it has $83 million worth of unsold Amazon Fire Phones

unsold Amazon Fire PhonesWhen Amazon announced its long rumoured smartphone, the Fire Phone, it was met with substantial skepticism, primarily because of the operating system it runs on – while technically Android, Fire OS uses its own app store with a heavy emphasis on media, books, movies, music, you name it. It definitely had some intriguing technology built in like the dynamic 3D display, but in a world dominated by Android and iOS with Windows and Blackberry tagging along at a distant third and fourth, the Fire Phone was always going to face an uphill battle. However, from Amazon’s recently released quarterly results, and from the quoted number of unsold Amazon Fire Phones, it seems that battle might actually have been more of a wall.

Amazon has said that in their last quarter, the company has been hit by a $437 million USD loss, $170 million of which was “primarily related to Fire phone inventory valuation and supplier commitment costs”. To add salt to that wound, Amazon said that it has $83 million worth of unsold Amazon Fire Phones, which really hammers home exactly how much Amazon had overestimated its device’s popularity – this might actually have been a situation that OnePlus’ invite system might have saved Amazon a little.

What do you think of Amazon’s losses due to the Fire Phone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Nexus 9 delivery delayed in the UK until December by Amazon

nexus9_700w

We recently reported that sources were speculating that the Nexus 6 wouldn’t be hitting the UK until at least December, and now it seems that the Nexus 9 is getting the same delay.

It seems that some users are reporting that Amazon UK are sending out emails stating their Nexus 9 orders have been delayed until at least December. The reason Amazon are giving is just as mysterious:

“I’ve checked that for you and see that we are unable to confirm the reason for the delay in release date.

However, it is based on the manufacturers decision, and the date mentioned by the manufacturer and supplied by the supplier.”

The Google Play Store still seems to be shipping on schedule, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the shipping timeframes for the Nexus 9 also slips here too. Many opted for Amazon to take advantage of the Prime next day delivery, but may be forced to cancel their Amazon order.

Did you order with Amazon UK? If so, will you be cancelling your order and taking your chances with the Google Play Store?

Amazon has made its Appstore for Android obsolete

Since its creation, the Amazon Appstore stood apart, banned from being offered in the official store for Android apps, Google Play, until now… sort of. When Amazon recently updated its main Android app, it got a new “Apps & Games” department that duplicates the content found in the standalone Appstore app — effectively making it both unnecessary and obsolete. Naturally, because Amazon’s still delivering apps outside the confines of Google Play, you need to change your device’s security settings to accept downloads from unknown sources to install them. The change is a welcome one — reducing app clutter’s a good thing — and the convenience factor afforded by this consolidation should have Amazon selling more apps. Still, we’re pretty sure that’s not enough to make up for the Fire phone’s hit to the company’s bottom line.

Amazon launches App Store in main Android app

The Amazon logo is seen on a podium duri

Before now, the only way to download apps from the Amazon Appstore was to download the apk for the Appstore online, and then download apps. Last month, however, Amazon launched the functionality to download apps through the official Amazon app. All you have to do is head to “Shop by Department,” and you’ll find a new category called “Apps & Games.”

Amazon takes $170 million hit “primarily related” to the Fire Phone

Amazon_Fire_Phone_Main_TA

There is no surprise that the Fire Phone has not performed well for Amazon. It locked customers into the company’s services and the specifications did not match the price. Also, availability was exclusive to AT&T. Just how bad has the Fire Phone performed? Like $170 million bad. It was revealed in Amazon’s earnings call that there was a $170 million hit “primarily related” to the Fire Phone. And Amazon still has a bunch of handsets on its hands with the inventory being valued at $83 million.

Hit the break to see what T-Mobile CEO John Legere had to say about the Fire Phone’s flop.

Amazon’s acquisitions and experiments are erasing its profits

In case you didn’t know, here’s the crazy thing about Amazon: it isn’t really known for turning a profit. Just think about that for a second. The company that wants to you sell everything, get it to you by any means necessary and serves as the backbone for a considerable chunk of the internet doesn’t usually make money at the end of the day. And even with that financial truth entered into the record, people — from Wall Street types to armchair prognosticators — cheer whenever Amazon avoids losing as much money in a quarter as they expect it to. Today is not one of those days.

Amazon’s Q3 results dropped not too long ago, and it packs some big numbers. While the Everything Store raked in $20.58 billion in revenue (which is more than most small countries make in a year) it just wasn’t enough to please to please those pesky shareholders — the company’s stock price is down nearly 10 percent in after-hours trading. Amazon’s business model is the epitome of spending money to make money, except what operating profits they do post are pretty meager and big losses like today’s (think $437 million) aren’t rare. In fairness, this quarter has been a really busy one for the folks in Seattle. After all, Amazon snapped up Twitch for a billion dollars, expanded its same-day delivery service in six cities across the United States, and launched a phone that no one actually seems to want (if you’re reading, Bezos, we’d like still like hard sales numbers for that thing). The question is, how much longer can Amazon afford to spend and spend and acquire and expand and create before shareholders — the people who back the company with their own money — decide that enough is enough?

Amazon Fire TV now available in the UK

Amazon_Fire_TV_UK_Ad

Those of you patiently waiting in the UK for the Fire TV can sit back and relax. It’s now available for £79. The good news is that you will have access to many UK providers such as BBC iPlayer, BBC News, Demand 5, and Sky News. You will of course get access to Amazon Instant Prime, Netflix, Vevo, and a bunch of games. Speaking of games, you can also grab the gaming controller for £34.99

Personally, I would wait for the Nexus Player, but if you’re deep into the Amazon ecosystem, it’s a good buy.
