Amazon adds instant definitions, family sharing to newer Kindles
Remember all those new Kindle software features Amazon promised? You know, the ones that were announced alongside the shiny new Kindle Voyage? The company’s been coy about when exactly we’d get them packaged up for our installing pleasure, but it’s now ready to spill the metaphorical beans — a software update will ferry those features to the Voyage, the new $79 basic Kindle and the second-generation Kindle Paperwhite over the air during the coming weeks… unless you want to just install the update yourself right now.
In case you’ve forgotten, this update’s changelog is sort of a doozy: WordWise shoehorns brief definitions into the margins above tricky words to help you up your vocabulary, while Kindle Freetime Unlimited gives parents access to a wide swath of kid-friendly content for $2.99 a month. The most intriguing new addition is the most conceptually simple — Amazon’s Family Library lets people tap into the e-book libraries of “a spouse or partner,” plus the ability to manage child accounts too. And the rest of it? They’re mostly just tweaks to existing features. Now you can use X-Ray to bounce through all of a book’s images, and then more easily share your progress through Pilgrim’s Progress via Goodreads. Yeah, yeah, not every addition to the mix will upend the way you read, but we’re definitely looking at a hefty batch of changes here.

Amazon gives UK Prime members unlimited photo storage too
When Amazon announced that it was extending Prime subscription perks to include unlimited photo storage, the online retailer continued its tradition of making features available to US customers only. While we’ve been made to wait longer for other products and services, the company today saw it fit to open the service to us Brits, allowing you to upload your entire photo library (in full resolution) to its cloud. Amazon lets you upload your images one of three ways; via the web, using its iOS or Android apps, or by downloading its dedicated PC app (a Mac app is on its way). You’ll then be able to view them using Amazon’s Fire TV, console apps and selected smart TVs — perfect for when the in-laws arrive at your door unannounced and you need to provide some quick entertainment.

Primecast enjoys 36 hours of service before shutting down
A few days ago, an app allowing Amazon Prime Instant Video content to be mirrored to Chromecast arrived in the Play Store. Primecast is now nonexistent after thirty-six hours of service. The app was pulled from Google Play. We assume Amazon stepped forward with some legal formalities that prevented Primecast from remaining in service.
The developer, at this time, is unsure whether or not Primecast will return to the Play Store. We wouldn’t count on it. At the very least, we can hope that Amazon sees there is a demand for its content to have Chromecast support.

LG’s £225 circular G Watch R goes on sale in the UK
Google’s now selling LG’s G Watch R via the Play Store in the US, but in the UK, fans of the circular Android Wear smartwatch are being made to wait. Luckily, Amazon is one step ahead (not for the first time), and has opened orders for the wearable before its rival has had the chance to do the same. At £225, the G Watch R is £70 more than its predecessor, but with a heart rate monitor, better battery life and a fully circular display, it might be worth those few extra notes.

Digital assistant Amazon Echo announced
Amazon has released a new device that puts a unique twist on the digital assistant market. Rather than existing as a piece of software only on a smartphone or tablet, the Amazon Echo puts that technology on a piece of hardware ready to be deployed around the house. The device is always on and will respond to a wake word to provide information, answer questions, or even fill a room with music.
The Amazon Echo comes equipped with seven microphones that employ enhanced noise cancellation and far-field technology. This means users can speak in a normal voice from anywhere in a room. Speaking is important because the device is voice-activated and according to Amazon, will learn speech patterns, vocabulary and personal preferences making it smarter over time.
Besides the voice input capabilities, Amazon also built the Amazon Echo to delivery crisp, clear sound with a nice immersive bass response. Users will be able to access services like Amazon Music, iHeartRadio and TuneIn for musical content. The Amazon Echo is also Bluetooth enabled so users can stream content from sources like Spotify, iTunes or Pandora using a phone or tablet.
Amazon is also releasing an Amazon Echo app for multiple platforms that can be used to manage alarms, create shopping lists and perform other functions.
Amazon is only selling the Amazon Echo by invitation. You can hit the source link to request an invitation. Amazon Prime members can get the Amazon Echo for $99 while the normal price is $199.

Amazon surprises everyone, announces the Echo

The people at Amazon must have been bored today. Out of the blue they announced the Amazon Echo. The Echo is a do it all gadget, that combines a voice controlled personal assistant and bluetooth speaker. While this seems like an unlikely combination, the Amazon Echo looks like something that almost anyone could find a use for.
Once setup, you use a “wake word” to get the Echo going. You can follow the wake word with just about any command you want. You can ask questions, set reminders or alarms, play music and even add items to your shopping lists. Amazon says you can even talk to the Echo when you have music playing. It will be interesting to see where Amazon takes the Echo from here. If it is successful, will Amazon let us order stuff over the Echo?
If you are interested in an Echo, you need to request an invitation from Amazon. If you are given an invitation it will come in the next few weeks. The Echo will cost $199 for non-prime customers and $99 for prime members. You can request an invitation here.
