acer chrombook 11.6

First up, let’s pause for a second and consider for a second that you can now buy a brand new, real laptop (well, real, unless you believe in Microsoft’s defunct Scroogled campaign) for $129. We live amazing times…

Back to the matter at hand: Best Buy is offering the moonstone white Acer’s 11.6-inch Chromebook (CB3-111-C8UB) for $129 today and tomorrow, which is $70 off its list price and $50 lower than on Amazon. If you’re looking for a dirt cheap computing device and are fine with the (ever smaller) constraints of Chrome OS, this is a real bargain for you.

Specs include a 1366 x 768 screen, an Intel Celeron N2830 processor clocked at 2.16GHz, Intel HD graphics, 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4, and HDMI out. Yes, this is pretty barebones, but for some types of users, barebones is all they need. The device weighs 2.7 pounds.

Get the Acer Chromebook 11.6 on Best Buy for $129

Reviewers on Best Buy and Amazon are very happy with this Chromebook 11.6-inch from Acer, awarding it 4.5 stars on BB and an impressive 4.8 stars on Amazon.

Acer Chromebase marks company’s entrance into all-in-one PC market

acer_chromebase

This is no April Fool’s joke from Acer as the company announced a new Acer Chromebase series of all-in-one computers to join their Chromebook and Chromebox lines. Acer is one of the more active manufacturers in the market for Chrome OS powered devices. They recently launched a 15.6-inch Chromebook, the first to market in that size range. Moves like these have given Acer 36% market share in 2014 for Chromebook devices.

The new Chromebase device features a 21.5-inch full 1080p HD resolution screen that is touch-enabled. Acer has added in some additional security to the Chrome OS, which provides support for multiple users. Acer has arranged for users to get a complimentary 100 GB of Google Drive storage when they purchase a Chromebase.

The Chromebase is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, a built-in HD webcam, 3W speakers, a variety of ports including HDMI out, and supports both WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

Acer says the new Chromebase will be available in the second quarter in North American and Asia Pacific markets, although they have not provided any pricing information.

You can read the full press release below.

Acer Chromebase announced, touchscreen in tow

Acer Chromebase DC221HQ

When the very first Chromebook debuted, a number of people wrote off the idea, saying a web-centric ‘computer’ experience would never take off. Fast-forwarding to today, the Chromebook market is slowly but surely gaining traction, in large part due to its consumer-friendly pricing. Will 2015 be the year that Chrome OS truly pushes its way out of niche territory and into the mainstream? It is certainly starting to look that way.

Just yesterday, Google unveiled a number of new Chromebooks and even new Chromebit dongle for transforming monitors and TVs into Chrome OS devices. Today the Mountain View giant revealed a new tool that will make it easier for developers to test out their Android apps on Chrome, with the end goal of bringing these apps over to Chrome OS. And now Acer has announced a new touch-driven Chromebase.

The new Chromebase features a 21.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a Tegra K1 processor, HDMI out, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and two 3W audio speakers. As for other details like internal storage, RAM, or even the price tag? At this stage, we have no clue, though they say the device is heading our way this summer, so we’ll learn more in the coming months.

The big question is whether anyone is actually interested in a desktop Chrome OS experience. Current Chromebox and Chromebase units haven’t exactly had the same level of growth as the Chromebook. Perhaps the combination of touchscreen optimization and a (hopeful) growth in the number of supported Android apps will be enough to make the Acer Chrombebase appeal to more consumers? Only time will tell for sure.

What do you think of the Acer Chromebase? How much would you be willing to pay for such a device?

Acer holding press event on April 23rd to show off something new

acer inviteAcer has sent out invitations to a press conference on April 23rd in New York City, but they haven’t specified what kinds of things they’ll be unveiling. With MWC out of the way, it’s hard to imagine why they would put off any new phones or tablets to its own separate event, but that’s what the company is doing anyway.

All the invite mentions is that the company will show off their “latest devices and solutions,” so we know there’s going to be some hardware shown off. Other than that, your guess is as good as ours. Any ideas?

Acer adds new Intel Core i3-powered Chromebox to its CXI lineup

Acer Chromebox_kb_msAcer has announced some brand new Chromeboxes in its CXI lineup, including a relatively powerful box with an Intel Core i3 processor inside. The CXI-i34GKM sports a 4th generation i3 4030u CPU, which is a dual-core processor that’s specialized in low-power consumption and speedy performance.

It’s rare to see powerful chips inside of Chromebooks or Chromeboxes, and while this i3 isn’t top of the line, it’s one of the better performing processors you’ll find in a Chrome device. It’s capable of pushing both 2k and 4k displays and is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and a 16 GB solid state drive, plus all the typical radios and connections that you’re used to.

This box was designed primarily for small business and educational use where you don’t need a ton of horsepower to do daily tasks. Basic web browsing and document editing will be no problem for the set of specs this thing comes with, and since it’ll launch at around the sub-400 dollar price point, it’s perfect for the market it’s aimed at.

Acer adds two new Intel Core i3-based options to its Chromebox CXI Series

149481

As of right now, there aren’t too many options available if you’re looking to run Chrome OS on a desktop. At least, not many powerful options. With that said, Acer has just unveiled two new additions to its Chromebox CXI Series that aim to change that. Both of the new Chromebox units are powered by 4th generation Intel Core i3 dual-core processors, which is a nice step in the right direction from the company’s previous Celeron-powered models.

Acer explains:

This practical series was designed for users in education and small to medium businesses as well as consumers wanting to leverage the ease and security of the Google Chrome ecosystem and don’t require a mobile platform.

The first of the two models is called the CXI-i34GKM, and features 4GB of RAM. The higher-end model, called the CXI-i38GKM, has 8GB of RAM. Both new Chromebox devices also include a 16GB Solid State Drive, and support for both 2K and 4K resolution displays.

These new Chromebox devices have great specs, but of course, that comes at a price. The CXI-i34GKM model is selling for $349.99, and the CXI-i38GKM is being sold for $399.99. Both units are available now through Acer’s website. What do you think of Acer’s new Chromebox devices? Do you think you’ll pick one up?
