Moto Stream, a New Audio Streaming Device, Released by Motorola for $50

Motorola has announced and released a new little device called the Moto Stream. The icosahedron sided orb, which reminds me of the Nexus Q with a slight design change, gives you a quick connect to your home theater or speaker system. In the video you see that you simply plug it in to the power source and connect the 3.5mm audio jack and you are done.

Motorola Mot StreamMotorola incorporated NFC into the Moto Stream to make it super easy for all your friends to connect to the device without having to individually pair every device. Nothing is more annoying than holding a button for pairing mode in hopes they can connect the first time. Once connected you can have free range of up to 300 feet, when connected with a class 1 Bluetooth phone, to control all the tunes while you mingle. The video, below, and the Motorola accessory page for it doesn’t make any mention of a specific application needed. All the imagery depicts Google Play Music. Naturally we assume since it is just Bluetooth that once you connect your given devices the Moto Stream will take action when one of those devices issues a command.

Heist Mode allows up to five devices to control any speaker. There’s no setup and it’s universally compatible with all Bluetooth® devices, so anyone can jump in and drop a track. And if you don’t like what’s playing, heist it.

It is a pretty interesting little device for just $50. The streaming audio market is getting pretty heavily saturated and competitive. This single room, single speaker set up isn’t anything new. While the NFC quick connect, design and lights are a nice touch there are plenty of other options out there, like the Rocki which goes over Wi-Fi for the same $49 or the more expensive Phorus PR1 that also runs over Wi-Fi and allows you multi room controls.

If you want more detailed information, or just want to order one, then head over to Motorola’s site.

Summer is right around the corner, for many it is already here. When I think warm weather and sunshine, I think rivers, lakes and pools. I also think music. BRAVEN has announces the availability of their latest Bluetooth speaker, the Mira.

Braven Water-REsistant Bluetopoth SpeakerThe Mira is a small hockey puck style Bluetooth speaker that has quite a bit to offer. Inside there is a 1200 mAh battery that is rated for 10 hours of audio playback. The battery is charged with a micro USB plug that is located under a rubber stopper. Under the plug you also find a aux port and a reset button. The Mira also has a multi function kickstand that also flips around to make a hook to hand the speaker on things, like the shower head. Externally on the front they have the power button, play/pause and volume up/down that also doubles as track forward and back. This gives you full control over your tunes while keeping your device at a safe, water free, distance.

Braven Mira SpeakerThe Mira also has a mic allowing you to use it as a speaker phone while lounging in the pool with your drink. I did say it was water-resistant as well. The little speaker offers up a IPX5 rating.

Corsair Announces the Voyager Air 2; 1TB of Wireless Storage Wonder

Corsair has announced a new wireless storage solution, the Corsair Voyager Air 2 wireless drive. The Voyager Air 2 brings users a full terabyte of wireless storage for their mobile life. That is not a typo, 1TB of wireless storage. The Air 2 is also USB 3.0 which allows for you to transfer those large media files from your PC to the drive quickly. After all, filling 1TB takes a lot of work, it shouldn’t take a lot of time.

Corsair Voyager Air 2 1TB Wireless drive Along with the release of the new drive is a new app. It is the same app that the original Corsair Voyager Air used, it has just been updated to a new version. Unlike some of the other wireless drives I have seen and used, this one is apparently smarter as it will also sync with your Dropbox and Google Drive accounts.

In addition to the revamped app, and the ridiculous amount of wireless storage, the Voyager Air 2 also allows up to 5 device to connect and stream simultaneously. It also will act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and allows for wireless passthorugh.

The Voyager Air 2 is set to release this month for $179.99.

Full press release and images below.

Corsair Announces Voyager Air 2 Wireless Drive

The rechargeable battery-powered storage drive serves up your entire movie and music library at home or on the go, all without need for wires or internet access.

The latest second-gen drive uses new Voyager Air 2.0 software, which adds new features to the Voyager Air product family, including: simplified media browsing, cloud synchronization with Dropbox and Google Drive, and Airplay streaming to Apple TV.

Wirelessly add 1TB of storage to iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac OS X devices

The Voyager Air 2 adds 1TB of storage to Apple and Android tablets and phones without a tangle of wires. The spacious drive can store up to 800 full-length HD movies or 380,000 MP3s with extra room for photos and office documents. This frees users from obsessing over managing precious space on their mobile devices, and leaves plenty of space for future needs.

Wireless mobile storage for media streaming on the go

With Voyager Air 2, multiple people can enjoy their stored movies, TV shows, music and photos at the office, on a road trip, or while on vacation. The drive is a self-contained streaming media server with a wireless hub built-in, so it can wirelessly stream digital content to other playback devices directly with no Internet connection required. Media can be played with the free Voyager Air app for Android, Apple iOS, and Amazon Kindle Fire devices, or through a web browser. Voyager Air 2 provides solid, fast, and secure 802.11n/b/g Wi-Fi connections for multiple users at ranges up to 90 feet, and can stream 720p high-definition video to up to five devices at once. For ultimate mobility, the high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to seven hours of video streaming between recharges.

New version 2.0 software adds simplified media browsing, Airplay, DLNA, and cloud syncing

Voyager Air 2’s onboard media server automatically organizes media files, making it easy to browse your whole media library. Browse TV shows by name, season, and episode or music by song title, artist, album, and genre. The drive can also be connected wirelessly to a home network for easy access to media from DLNA-compatible smart TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, DVRs, and streaming media boxes. Plus full Airplay compatibility allows convenient streaming to big screen TVs via an Apple TV.

Voyager Air 2 is also cloud friendly. The drive synchronizes with your Dropbox or Google Drive folders, making the content available offline anywhere you go. Once reconnected to the internet, Voyager Air 2 will automatically re-sync to ensure all changes are saved in both the cloud and the drive.

Portable USB 3.0 drive, up to 2x faster

Voyager Air 2 also functions as a super-fast USB 3.0 drive. Copy a two-hour HD movie in under 30 seconds or 1000 iPhone photos in under 45 seconds. It’s compatible with USB 2.0 connections as well.

Voyager Air 2 comes ready to use in Windows format (NTFS), but Mac users can easily reformat to HFS+ for Time Machine® compatibility. The Voyager Air 2 drive may be partitioned for easier organization of media and user files.

Mobile wireless hub for sharing Internet access

Everyone gets online at the same time. Use the Voyager Air 2 as a wireless hub to share Internet access by connecting Voyager Air 2 to a Wi-Fi hotspot and enabling wireless passthrough.

Pricing, Availability, and Warranty

Voyager Air 2 will be available beginning in June from Corsair’s worldwide network of resellers and distributors. Suggested retail pricing is $179.99 USD.

T-Mobile Partners with Jays AB to Bring Big Sound to Customers

T-Mobile partners with Jays Back in March of last year we had the chance to review a set of A-Jays One+ Bluetooth earbuds. They were designed with Android users in mind and come with a companion app to help enhance your audio enjoyment. They sounded great, looked great and had a price tag that was under what they should have been. That is a good thing.  Today Jays has announced a new partnership with T-Mobile to bring their quality Swedished designed earbuds to Magenta customers across the nation.

“We believe that our products gives the value and features that the increasingly demanding headphone consumers are looking for today”, says Rune Torbjörnsen, CEO Jays AB (publ) in a comment. “As we are seeing growth in the carrier segment for headphones, this collaboration marks an important step for Jays in introducing our iWA-concept to the US consumers and T-Mobile provides a perfect launch platform that allows us to do that.”

Initially there will be four JAYS models to choose from landing in 3000 stores across the nation in June. It should be a great launch for Jays and help them gain some more exposure for their great products. Rune mentions a new iWA-concept that will be introduced through T-Mobile. That has me wondering what exactly they will be bringing to the table. Jays has earbuds, headphones and some other audio accessories.  We will have to keep our eyes out for things to come next month.

Finally: Google Chromecast is available in Australia for $49 AUD

Google Chromecast is available in AustraliaIt looks like somebody was definitely a bit trigger happy at retailer Dick Smith. A few weeks ago, we were given our first indication that the Google Chromecast media streaming device would be made available in Australia after a listing was made on Dick Smith’s website citing availability on the 28th of May. And sure enough, Google has today officially announced that the Google Chromecast is available in Australia.

The Chromecast is slowly being made available around the world now, first making its presence in the Asia Pacific known in Korea, and now Australia. While Australia isn’t quite the hotbed of media streaming that other parts of the world are, media providers like Quickflix, Foxtel and even the ABC have promised that Chromecast capabilities are coming to their apps soon. Unfortunately, there has not yet been word from Telstra about any content being made available for Chromecast or even any bundle deals despite rumours that they were in discussions directly with Google.

If you’re hoping to pick up a Chromecast, you can hop over to the Google Chromecast site here which lists all the available retailers, or you can purchase it on Google Play itself.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset Review: Where Xbox One and mobile audio compatibility Meet

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewIt’s currently a very lonely place to be a gaming headset for the Xbox One; Microsoft neglected to release any decent audio products with its next gen console, so that responsibility has fallen to third party manufacturers like Turtle Beach to sort out. The Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven gaming headset (along with its smaller brother, the XO Four) was one of the first audio devices released for the Xbox One, and as an added bonus, has been made to be compatible with mobile devices. Let’s see if the XO Seven has decent enough mobile credentials to warrant your time and money.

What’s in the box

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewAs always, Turtle Beach again makes the case that opening your boxes should be a pantomine event and the XO Seven box does not disappoint. While the XO Seven has less gear in the box than the i60 (read the full review of the i60 here), there’s still a lot of substance to the contents which include the headset, a Xbox One controller adapter and an assortment of cables to suit your chosen mode of gaming, either Xbox One or mobile (or even just listening to music).

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewYou’ll find your XO Seven headset nestled in the bosom of the moulded packaging and beneath it, you will find the various included cables and adapters. The XO Seven is a solid over-the-ear headphone affair that follows the design methodology of Turtle Beach’s other Seven series headsets, giving it quite a lot of size. To wear, I found the XO Seven extremely comfortable, probably the most comfortable headset I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this year so far; more on that later.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewWith equal parts of black leather and black plastic, the XO Seven looks like a menacing piece of audio hardware, which is only accentuated by the lime green highlights used throughout the headset. This colour scheme extends to the braided cable, which is also extremely tough and well shielded. There’s a fair amount of memory foam both on the earcups and the headband that all add to the comfort of the XO Seven.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewIf the all black decor isn’t exactly to your liking, the XO Seven also allows you to remove the faceplates of the earcups and replace them with other ones supplied by Turtle Beach, and typically feature games that Turtle Beach is the official audio provider for, like Titanfall, or just movie deals, like the Avengers.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset Review

As for the accessories that you will get with the XO Seven, you’ll get one cable that you can use to connect to mobile devices, one cable to connect to the Xbox One controller adapter, a headset boom microphone that attaches to the headset, and inexplicably, a micro-USB cable, which I can only assume is for use with mobile devices (though only with Android). I’m a bit torn on Turtle Beach’s decision to include a removable mic; while it’s great that the microphone is removable so that it isn’t in the way when you’re using it with mobile devices, it’s a bit of a bother to be removing it and replacing it if you’re using it regularly.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewWhile I wasn’t able to give the XO Seven a proper run as a Xbox One headset, in large part due to the fact that I do not yet own a Xbox One, the controller adapter appears to be of solid construction with quite a few buttons mounted on the adapter itself to help make quick changes to both audio and chat volumes during your gaming sessions.

How does it sound

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewApart from the game and chat options available to the Xbox One adapter, the XO Seven doesn’t have much else in the way of electronic audio smarts. What it does have, however, is passive noise cancellation courtesy of its “noise-isolating memory foam ear cushions” which do an amazing job of blocking out about 80% of the noise that is happening around you; the sound coming out of the 50mm audio drivers will easily take care of the remaining 20%. In fact, more than once, I’ve used the XO Seven to specifically block out extraneous sounds, making it a perfect headset for game immersion or just general audio immersion.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming HeadsetDespite the fact that the XO Seven’s are ‘only’ stereo, I found the sound to be extremely impressive. While not on the same level as the i60, the XO Seven still does an impressive job with the full range of sounds. Mids and highs are sharp and crisp, though as a gaming headset, the bass is of course accentuated, though not overwhelmingly so. Overall, I had no issues using the XO Seven to listen to a range of music genres on my mobile device including rock, pop and the occasional classic symphony. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio experience I got from the XO Seven; while there are definitely better headphones for specifically listening to music, the passive noise cancellation of the XO Seven’s makes sure that any disadvantage that they might have had due to noise leakage is minimized.

What I like about the Ear Force XO Seven

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming HeadsetI mentioned earlier that the XO Seven is one of the most comfortable headphones I’ve tried this year, and that’s mostly thanks to the way the headband is designed. While most headphones are designed so that the headband comes straight out of the earcups, the XO Seven headband has a slight forward tilt relative to the earcup orientation. This means that the headband sits slightly further forward than usual, not on the top of your head but rather the front slope of your skull. I’m a huge fan of this layout and I was happy to use the XO Seven for hours at a time with no complaints whatsoever. The fit may have been on the tight side, but the leather cushioning on the earcups and headband stopped any stress points from eventuating.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming HeadsetThe XO Seven looks like its built to last; every part of the headset looks like it is beefed up so it can take some serious pounding, whether that’s through travelling or angry gamers getting, well, angry. I’m a big fan of chunkier headsets and the XO Seven ticks all the boxes, including a super-wide headband to distribute some of those head stresses.

What I don’t like about the Ear Force XO Seven

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming HeadsetAlthough it is advertised as mobile compatible, just about the only things additional that make the XO Seven “mobile” is the inclusion of the breakaway mobile cable. The connection that joins the cable to the headset contains two notable features, the answer call button and an in line microphone so you don’t have to lug around the boom mic. While that’s definitely better than some allegedly mobile compatible headsets out there, with such a large breakaway connection, I would have expected a few more gizmos and gadgets, like a volume wheel or something similar.

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewAs I mentioned earlier, the boom mic isn’t the most convenient thing to have to remove and replace every time you want to use it. Naturally, if you’re using it exclusively for Xbox One play, this won’t be an issue at all. However, for those who want to use it interchangeably between Xbox One and mobile devices, it’s a bit of a hindrance.

Final Thoughts

Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset ReviewI definitely have a soft spot for the Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset; while it might not have the best quality sound of all the headsets available for the Xbox One and it’s not always the most practical headset, it’s incredibly comfortable and is built to survive some serious punishment. Marketed as Turtle Beach’s premium Xbox One option, the XO Seven is priced accordingly at $159.95 USD, compared to the $99.95 XO Four, where all the quality is in the details. If you’re in the market for something for your Xbox One that can be also used for your mobile device, the XO Seven is a hard choice to overlook.

If you’re interested in picking up the Turtle Beach Ear Force XO Seven Gaming Headset, be sure to visit its product page here, or to check out Turtle Beach’s range of other gaming products, you can visit their homepage here.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G Review: Nothing but the best Protection

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewOne name generally stands out when it comes to ultimate mobile protection: OtterBox. It’s hard to go past the steadfast quality of OtterBox cases, particularly when you are considering getting the best protection for your smartphone. Despite the Moto G being one of the best selling phones that Motorola has ever produced in recent years, there are still lack of cases that are capable of fully protecting the device. Enter the OtterBox Defender Series for Motorola Moto G.

What’s in the box

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewIf you have never heard of the OtterBox Defender Series, the premise of the product is to be the best possible protection for a device in any given environment. It’s dust proof, water proof,  and drop proof. Just by looking at it, you’d think it were also tank proof (definitely unconfirmed).

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewInside the humble little box, you will find the Defender along with a belt harness that can be mounted on all manner of things. There aren’t any peripheral things like screen protectors or screen cleaning cloths included because you won’t be needing them; a plastic film encases the screen to stop errant debris being forced into the case, making for a relatively airtight seal.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewThe Defender is made up of three pieces; two of these make up the hard plastic inner case which can be likened to a skeleton protecting inner organs (i.e. your previous phone). A silicon outer layer goes on top of this skeleton, giving your Moto G the shock proofing it needs. The process of opening the case can be a little fiddly, but once inside, you really do get the sense that your Moto G can now face any adversity. We have the Black version of the case here today, but the case can also be had in Glacier, Key Lime, Wild Orchid, and Hornet variants.

How does it perform?

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewAs with the previous entries in the Defender Series, the Moto G version does exactly what Otterbox does best, and that’s protecting your phone. The inner plastic frame forms an extremely snug fit around the Moto G, allowing for no free space inside. I found it a little frustrating trying to get it open initially, but perseverance is the key here.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewOnce the silicon cover goes over, each accessible port on your device (bar the microphone on the bottom and the back speaker) are covered with a flap to prevent any dust or dirt getting in. The hold and volume buttons are also encased within the silicon case, and I had been concerned that the case would ruin the tactile feel of the Moto G’s normally crisp buttons. To my pleasant surprise, the buttons remained impressively tactile; dampened of course, but much better than I had expected.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G Review
OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G Review
OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G Review

Over my test period of several weeks, my device suffered absolutely no damage and the silicon case looks exactly the same as the day I put the case on, save for some specs of dust. As you might expect, there was a little build up of dust in specific parts of the case including the microphone and speaker port, as well as the slit where the front facing camera and ear speaker are left open. In general, the Defender engulfs the Moto G and makes it look fairly ambiguous, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it; all I know is I was asked why I had such a big case for my iPhone quite a few times.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewThe harness has been a staple for the Defender Series and its inclusion with the Moto G version is no surprise. The construction is basically identical the previous versions, including the swivelling clip. The harness is made from hard plastic to withstand the rigours of outside activities. I’m personally not big on using the harness myself, but it’s a great little accessory with great durability.

What I like about the Defender Series case

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewI like that the Defender case is protective; I know that sounds almost like a moot point given OtterBox’s reputation, but it’s one thing to say it, but it’s another to excel at it, which the Defender does. If you’re the type of person who drops your device frequently, or just needs a little more security in case something happens, the Defender has those credentials written all over it.

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewAs I mentioned earlier, I was quite afraid that the case would impair the Moto G’s button tactility, however I’m hugely impressed that it hasn’t really taken away from that at all. The same can’t be said for the Commuter case which we reviewed earlier, as the silicon buttons seemed to absorb too much of the force to create a nice feeling button press. So yes: you could say that the Defender pushes my buttons.

What I don’t like about the Defender Series case

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewWhile the Defender is a supremely protective case, that naturally comes at somewhat of a cost. Because the edges around the screen are raised so high and ends right where the screen is, I found that the screen near those edges became a little more difficult to use. Case in point for me has been while I try to swipe words on my screen and I want to hit the letter “p”; because the edge is so close to the screen and the fact that fingers are round, it would actually take a few attempts to properly spell the word I was intending to. Sure it might be a small peeve, but since it happens on a daily basis, it’s more than a little frustrating.

Final Thoughts

OtterBox Defender Series Case for Motorola Moto G ReviewIt’s hard not to give the Defender Series top marks as a smartphone case; if you’re in the market for something super-heavy duty to protect your Moto G, you can’t go past the Defender. Sure it has its peeves and downsides, but if your concern is protecting your phone, you can be sure that the Defender has the same concerns in mind. And for $49.95, that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. That said, if you’re looking for something almost as protective with a little more freedom, take a look at the OtterBox Commuter instead (read our review here).

LG Shows Us the Circle Case for the LG G3 [Video]

lg-g3-circle-case-video

Seems that when an OEM puts out a new flagship, a new kind of flip case comes along with it. LG is about to unveil to us the LG G3 on the 27th, and today, they posted a video showing off their new Circle Case for the LG G3. It is a pretty fancy little flip case, and I think it fits the G3 pretty well. I still think HTC wins the flip case battle with their case they launched with the HTC One M8, but I am digging this one too.

You can perform all sorts of functions when the flip case is close, like play music, view notifications, and take photos. So check out the new video below and let us know what you think about it.

Surface Pro 3’s accessories include a new Type Cover and a 4K-ready dock

Surface Pro 3's Type Cover

A professional tablet like the Surface Pro 3 deserves some equally high-end accessories, don’t you think? Microsoft certainly thinks so, as it just introduced some add-ons built with demanding users in mind. To start, it has a new $130 Type Cover keyboard add-on with a much-improved trackpad — the new design has a 68 percent larger area than the Type Cover 2, and 78 percent less friction. It’s better for lap use, too; you can lock in the cover’s position so that it won’t wobble around so much while you’re typing on your legs.

The company has also unveiled a $200 docking station for those who want to use the new Surface as a makeshift desktop. Besides adding a bevy of extra connections (three USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, Ethernet and audio) to the tablet, the dock also lets you output video at 4K through its Mini DisplayPort. If you need an extra-sharp secondary display for Photoshop, you’ve got it. Both the station and the new Type Cover should be available when the Pro 3 launches in North America on June 20th, and there are promises of extra peripherals in the future.
