Windows Phone 7 Marketplace adds YouTube, Twitter and more

They might not have been there at the start of day one, but by the end a number of “flagship” apps hit the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

Those who’ve picked up a new HTC, LG or Samsung device powered by Microsoft’s new operating system can now watch YouTube videos, tweet on the official Twitter app and chat with their mates via a Windows Live Messenger app.

If you are giddy by the excitement, then brace yourself for the news that Adobe has released Acrobat Reader for Windows Phone 7, allowing you to read pdf files on the go. Whoop!

All the above apps are free.

Sadly the YouTube app is only half the story, as it only allows you to view content on YouTube’s mobile site and doesn’t support embedded YouTube content, like the sorts of videos you’ll find on lots of websites.

Others now in the Marketplace include Shazam and GoVoice – a Google Voice app costing a couple of quid.

The new high-profile additions add to the bevy of big names like Facebook, Ebay and Foursquare, all of which are already available.

Winamp comes to Android, one of our childhood dreams is realized

Here’s a blast from the past: Winamp, that mainstay media player of college dorms and LAN parties since time immemorial (er, 1997 or so) has made the leap from PC to handset with the release of Winamp for Android. This bad boy is available for Android 2.1 and up, and features a playback widget for the Android desktop and Last.fm integration. But that ain’t all! If you install Winamp 5.59 beta on your PC, you can sync and manage your libraries via USB or WiFI. Pretty sweet! We only have one questions, really: will it still whip the llama’s ass? Check out the QR code after the break (or search the Android Market) for the mobile app.

Limera1n and Greenpois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreaks now available for Mac, Linux

image

We thought it was a wee bit ridiculous that Geohot’s original iOS 4.1 jailbreak only worked on Windows, but that’s a thing of the past now — limera1n now supports Mac as well, and the Chronic Dev Team’s greenpois0n variant can purportedly free your device from Apple shackles from any of OS X, Linux or Windows. Mind you, there’s still no working carrier unlock for iOS 4.1, so be sure to back up your baseband and don’t expect to be making calls on T-Mobile USA — and remember kids, there are always risks to playing chicken with the Apple firmware train.

Galaxy S Android 2.2 Froyo update begins to trickle out (update: official)

Based on breathless reports we’re seeing on Twitter and in the XDA-Developers’ forums, it would appear that Samsung has just pushed out the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for its Galaxy S as promised. Our Nordic friends are the first to report seeing the build I9000 JPM update in the latest version of Samsung’s Kies PC software. It’s early days though, so do let your fellow i9000 owners know how it goes in the comments below. List of changes (including GPS fix) listed after the break.

Update: We’ve just been handed the official press release for the Andoid 2.2 Galaxy S update. Indeed, Nordic countries get it first (starting mid-October, aka, “now”) before it’s “gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world.” Hey, it takes time to update 5 million handsets. iOS 4.2 beta 3 released

People familiar with the latest iOS beta said it is known as build 8C5115c.

The beta contains several significant changes, including an updated version of the modem firmware. Noticeably missing from the beta were AirPlay features from previous builds. The AirPlay button has disappeared from the Photos, Videos, and YouTube apps on the distribution for the iPad.

Developers have noticed a bug with the AirPrint functionality. When printing from an iPhone, the image sometimes prints as just the size of the iPhone’s screen, not the original image size.

The beta also packs a number of smaller additions. According to fscklog, the new beta adds “a larger number” of tones  for receiving text messages on the iPhone 4. The 17 new SMS ringtones include tones such as “Calypso,” “Choo Choo,” “Sherwood Forest,” and “Tiptoes.”

In a minor change to the iPad, the Connect to iTunes recovery screen now uses the controversial new iTunes 10 icon.

The iTunes 10.1 beta released alongside the iOS 4.2 beta continues to support printing.

TalkMyPhone Sends and Receives Your Android's SMS Messages Through Instant Messages

Android: If you’re tired of typing SMS messages on your tiny Android keyboard while sitting right at your computer, free app TalkMyPhone will forward those messages to your IM client, so you can reply without even picking up your phone.

While you can always forward SMS notifications to your PC, TalkMyPhone allows you to take action on those messages as well. TalkMyPhone sends you notifications of incoming SMS messages, phone calls, and battery states via Jabber, meaning you get the notification right from Pidgin, Adium or whatever other IM client you use. You can then reply to SMS messages by simply responding to the IM, putting reply: before your message.
