Tacklife’s USB-rechargeable electric arc lighter is only $12

Never worry about running out of a light again.

The Tacklife USB-rechargeable electric arc lighter is down to $12.13 with code 4STI6479 on Amazon. It’s $14.97 without the code and regularly sells for around that price. This is the first discount we’ve seen on this model of electric arc lighter, although we’ve seen other ones go on sale in the past.

Compared to other models, this arc lighter has the largest battery of the bunch. It’s an 18650 battery with 2600mAh. It can be recharged via USB more than 500 times, and the lighter can be used more than 1,000 times before needing to be recharged. There’s even a power indicator to let you know when it’s low. The benefit of an arc lighter like this is there’s no flame, no gas, and no smell. You can use it throughout your daily life to light candles, start a burner, work on a grill, or build your own punch-activated flamethrower. After 10 seconds, the lighter automatically shuts down both for safety and to conserve battery life. The extended neck can be flexed to bend around corners, too.

Twitter plans on breaking all third-party apps/clients this June

Here’s why you might see #BreakingMyTwitter over the next couple months.

For years, third-party Twitter clients have offered alternative ways to access the popular social network for users that weren’t fans of Twitter’s official apps. These clients have been hugely popular, particularly in the Android space, but Twitter’s going to essentially break each and every one after June 19, 2018.

fenix-twitter-ac-page.jpg?itok=11l50tp7

After that date, Twitter will be eliminating its “streaming services.” When this happens, push notifications will no longer work and timelines won’t automatically refresh.

Streaming services are being replaced by the new Account Activity API, and while this could be used as a way to keep notifications working as is, the possibility of this happening is looking rather weak. Twitter still hasn’t given third-party developers access to the API, and while the free version of it allows for push notifications to work for 35 accounts, pricing details for the Enterprise model that supports an unlimited number of users have yet to be announced.

Also, while the Account Activity API could keep push notifications working, there’s currently no way for third-party developers to keep automatic timeline refreshes in place.

Twitter’s never been open to developers creating third-party clients that are often better than its own apps, and for years its tried to combat this with a token system (a system that recently killed one of the best Android Twitter apps ever made).

The folks behind Talon, Tweetbot, Tweetings, and Twitterrific have banded together to raise awareness of this situation, and it’s suggesting that users do any of these four things to try and protest the changes:

Ask @TwitterDev to correct this situation
Share your feelings using #BreakingMyTwitter
Talk about it on your podcast or blog
Spread the word with links to this website.

As a long-time fan of apps like Flamingo, Fenix, and Talon, this news is aggravating, to say the least. Twitter’s Android app has gotten considerably better over the years, but there are still a lot of things that other apps do much better. By removing push notifications and automatic timeline refreshes, these apps will be impossible to use as a default client for a lot of users.

What’s your take on all this?

Apple voices support for Clean Power Plan ahead of pending repeal

In October, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt announced he would sign a proposed rule that would withdraw the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan (CPP). The environmental regulations have had a contentious history since initially being proposed in 2014 and now they face the strongest threat to their implementation yet. In October, Pruitt said during a speech, “Here’s the president’s message: The war on coal is over.” As is typical with these sorts of proposed rule changes, the plan to repeal the CPP was subject to public comment, deadlines for which have been extended multiple times. Now, ahead of the April 26th deadline, Apple has filed its comment, opposing the repeal of the CPP.

“Apple is committed to leaving the world better than we found it. Part of our commitment is to reduce our own impact on climate change by using renewable energy sources and driving energy efficiency in our products and facilities,” Apple wrote. “However, we believe that governments, as well as industry leaders, must take a lead role in the global battle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. For a number of reasons, EPA should not repeal the Clean Power Plan.” The company goes on to argue that adopting the plan would help the US become a global leader in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and states that through its own efforts, it has shown that the CPP’s targets are achievable without negatively impacting reliability or resiliency.

Apple also says that the CPP recognizes the increasingly interconnected and dynamic nature of how power is generated, sold and consumed and that it can give US companies a competitive edge in the market by stabilizing energy costs. “In addition to the benefit of replacing more polluting, less sustainable forms of energy, investment in clean energy can provide corporate electricity buyers with a hedge against fuel price fluctuation,” says Apple. “Unlike traditional forms of energy, clean electricity generation, like solar and wind, is not fuel-price sensitive. The availability of electricity generated from clean energy sources provides businesses with powerful tools to control a significant component of their cost structure, thereby helping them be more competitive on a global scale.”

Repealing the CPP is just one of a number of moves the Trump administration has made to roll back environmental protections in the US.

Though 29 states petitioned the Supreme Court to halt the implementation of the CPP soon after it was proposed, Apple has continued to back it. In 2016, Apple, along with Amazon, Google and Microsoft, filed a joint brief to the Supreme Court supporting the CPP and its goals.

Apple concluded its comment by saying, “Apple supports the Clean Power Plan and action to tackle climate change. It is both needed and the smart thing to do.” The comment period is open until April 26th. You can add your own here.
