Samsung launching gorgeous ‘blue coral’ Galaxy S7 edge in the U.S. for the holidays

A mid-cycle color refresh for the phone taking over the Note 7’s sales.

If you lusted after the bright blue-and-pink “blue coral” Note 7 back when it was on sale, you’re in luck: the color is being reintroduced on the Galaxy S7 edge in the U.S. later this year. Blue coral was originally a Note 7-exclusive color, but will now sit alongside black, gold and silver as color options for the GS7 edge a “major wireless providers” in the States.

For those who wanted to stand out a bit the blue coral Note 7 was certainly enticing, with its amazingly flashy blue body being accented by a light pink metal trim that looked like no other phone on the market. The Galaxy S7 edge stands to be just as stunning in the color, even set next to the gold and silver options.

Though people with a Galaxy S7 edge aren’t going to be swapping out their current phone for the new color, at the very least the blue color option will help it stand out a bit on store shelves for holiday phone buyers. Together with pricing incentives in the final quarter of the year, Samsung is hoping that the Galaxy S7 edge (in all colors) will pick up some of the sales slack created by the Note 7’s recall.

The new color will go on sale starting November 1, with specific availability by region announced when it becomes available in each area.

Apple’s upcoming iOS 10.2 update will bring new emoji, wallpapers

Apple has rolled out the first beta of an upcoming iOS 10 update to developers, and when that update finally lands for consumers, it’ll bring a few new features, including new emoji and wallpapers.

One week after releasing the iOS 10.1 update and more than a month after launching the iOS 10 operating system, Apple has seeded iOS 10.2 to developers. Apart from new emoji and wallpapers, it brings bug fixes, performance improvements, new camera settings, and more. Registered developers can download the iOS 10.2 beta from the Apple Developer Center or over-the-air with the right configuration profile installed.

While the last update, iOS 10.1, introduced a new Portrait photography mode for the iPhone 7 Plus’ dual-lens camera system, the new features in iOS 10.2 aren’t as major. But they’re still noteworthy nonetheless. Unicode 9 emoji are included in iOS 10.2, which means you’ll get emoji for shrugging, clown face, drooling face, selfie, fox face, owl, shark, gorilla, butterfly, avocado, and pancakes.

  • Go here for the full list of new Unicode 9 emoji

9to5Mac

There are also new wallpapers in iOS 10.2. They use the same graphics found in the iPhone 7’s marketing materials. There’s even a new option for saving your last-used camera settings, meaning you can preserve the last Camera Mode, Photo Filter, or Live Photo setting. The Preserve Settings option can be located in the Settings app under Photos & Camera.

Other features include a new widget available for the Videos app (you can access this widget on the widgets panel; it displays movies and TV shows in the Videos app) and an emergency contacts feature that will automatically notify your emergency contacts when you use the Emergency SOS.

Check out Pocket-lint’s iOS 10 tips and tricks round-up to see what else you can already to with Apple’s mobile operating system.

Your Facebook check-in won’t help North Dakota protestors

There’s a new viral message making its way through your Facebook friends’ status updates today. The copy-paste chain letter message claims that police in Morton County, North Dakota are using Facebook check-ins to target demonstrators and disrupt protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline, while also calling on everyone to check in at the location “to overwhelm and confuse” law enforcement officials. Unfortunately for everyone at home, the rumor is false and status-update-based activism will do little to actually support the protestors’ cause.

If it hasn’t yet popped up on your Facebook feed, the bulk of the message goes like this:

“The Morton County Sheriff’s Department has been using Facebook check-ins to find out who is at Standing Rock in order to target them in attempts to disrupt the prayer camps. SO Water Protectors are calling on EVERYONE to check-in at Standing Rock, ND to overwhelm and confuse them. This is concrete action that can protect people putting their bodies and well-beings on the line that we can do without leaving our homes. Will you join me in Standing Rock?”

The rest of the message instructs supporters to publicly check in at Standing Rock, then make a separate, private post visible only to friends in order to clarify what they are doing. As Snopes points out, however, the core of that statement is simply not true. Not only is the Morton County Sheriff’s Department not monitoring Facebook check-ins, but even if they were, the remote check-ins “would not confuse or overwhelm them.” On a technical level, trying to throw off law enforcement with a remote check-in is pointless. The Sheriff’s Department re-iterated their position in a Facebook post stating “This claim/rumor is absolutely false.”

In its own Facebook message response, the Sacred Stone Camp clarified that the Facebook message “did not originate from the Sacred Stone Camp FB page.” The group claims “there is no doubt” that law enforcement monitors social media activity, but the check-ins help their cause only by bringing a bit of viral awareness. Although the group says they appreciate the show of solidarity, it would do much more to help their cause if all of those thousands of people “take physical action” in the form of a contribution to the group’s legal defense fund, by joining up on their solidarity page or by actually coming down to protest in person – not just through a meaningless online check-in.

Curiously, TechCrunch points out that “Standing Rock” is still not a trending topic on Facebook, despite all the chatter. So, for all the well-meaning misinformation, the protest still has much less awareness — or is less important in the eyes of Facebook’s algorithms — than fake news or Kylie Jenner and Tyga’s Halloween costumes.

Chrome boosts page load speeds with clever bits of code

Google’s main selling point for Chrome has always been simple: speed. With the browser’s latest update, 64-bit Chrome 53 and 32-bit Chrome 54 on Windows, the internet juggernaut is upping performance again. By using Microsoft’s Profile Guided Optimization — a part of Visual Studio, as noted by TechCrunch — the browser has boosted new tab page loads by 14.8 percent and page loads by 5.9 percent. In terms of firing the browser up for the first time (people actually close it?), that’s seen the most improvement of all, with Google claiming 16.8 percent faster startup time.

It’s all calculated by looking at which functions are used most often and optimizing them over less-used functions, Sébastien Marchand writes on the Chromium blog. More speed is always appreciated, sure, but decreasing the browser’s impact on battery life would be awesome too. There’s always December’s version for that, though.

The next president gets Obama’s 11 million Twitter followers

For the nation’s first social media president, the peaceful transfer of power includes a little more than turning over the nuclear launch codes to the next Commander in Chief — it also includes handing over access to the official @POTUS Twitter account. According to the White House, on January 20th, 2017, that handle and all of its 11 million followers will go to the nation’s 45th president, while all of President Obama’s tweets will be moved over to his new, official Former President account at @POTUS44.

So, @POTUS will start with a clean timeline on our next president’s first day in office, but we can still relive all the fun memories and Obama’s summer jams over at @POTUS44. Same goes for Michelle Obama’s @FLOTUS account, which will move to @FLOTUS44 along with other White House staff accounts to be archived by the NARA. (Although, if Clinton wins, someone in Washington is going to have to ask nicely for the @FGOTUS account, which appears to be claimed by a current Hillary supporter.)

The new president will take over Obama’s followers on the official White House Facebook and Instagram accounts as well, but will also start with a clean timeline on their first day in office. All of the content from the Obama administration will go to Facebook.com/ObamaWhiteHouse and Instagram.com/ObamaWhiteHouse respectively, and Obama’s WhiteHouse.gov material will move to ObamaWhiteHouse.gov, similar to how the government handled the Clinton and Bush websites in the past. The NARA will take the same approach with President Obama’s YouTube interviews, Snapchats, Medium posts and other social media content too — anything with a “WhiteHouse” username will go to the new president, while Obama’s material will be archived under a new username on the same platform and placed in the national archives.

As for the We the People petition site, the White House says the page has been open-sourced and they’ll archive the Obama administration’s petitions and responses before handing over the site to the next administration, although it will be up to #45 to decide whether to use it or not. Finally, the NARA is also providing all of the data, tweets, photos and other content to the American public and inviting everyone “to come up with creative ways to archive this content and make it both useful and available for years to come” in the form of art projects, Twitter bots and more.

Pirates swamp online stores with counterfeit music CDs

It can be easy to forget that CDs still represent a significant chunk of the music industry’s revenue in the streaming era, but pirates certainly haven’t forgotten. The Wall Street Journal has learned that counterfeit CDs are a serious problem at Amazon and other online stores. Bootleggers (frequently from China) produce discs that are increasingly similar to the real deal and sell them for slightly less than legitimate copies, making them look like bargains instead of obvious frauds. And they aren’t always coming from obscure suppliers, either. In an RIAA investigation, Amazon fulfilled 18 out of 44 CD orders identified as counterfeit.

In some cases, pirates get away with the act by exploiting how stores like Amazon manage inventory. They’ll let third parties lump their stock in with those of official partners (right down to similar barcodes), making it relatively easy to slip bogus products through the cracks.

The RIAA says Amazon was eager to help tackle pirated material after learning of the findings, and Amazon itself says it’s “working closely” with both distributors and labels to clamp down on counterfeiters. There’s certainly some urgency to improve anti-piracy efforts. Although downloads and streaming thrive in North America, CDs make up just shy of 40 percent of worldwide music industry revenue. Publishers can’t count on digital sources to pick up all the financial slack, especially in regions where CDs are either relatively popular (such as Europe) or the only realistic way to listen. Until broadband is both ubiquitous and genuinely affordable for a large chunk of the world, CD piracy is bound to be tempting.
