Wikileaf app helps you find the (legal) herb you’re looking for
Apps that help save time and money while you’re shopping are awesome. Buying weed shouldn’t be any different.

Buying weed can be a chore. No matter if you’re a medical patient or a recreational user, finding the right weed at the right price is one of those things that depends on luck or some other karmic superpower stuff. The new Wikileaf app can help change that.
OK, we know that marijuana isn’t legal everywhere. We’re not condoning or advising anyone to go looking for a street dealer and buying something that’s illegal. We’re talking strictly about states and places in the U.S. where medical or recreational cannabis is available for adults. We’re not here to fuel any arguments about the morality or the details of marijuana legalization, we’re only here to talk about an Android app that makes it easier for folks to buy weed where it’s legal to do so.
The Wikileaf app has a couple different features, each broken into its own section. You can find information about various strains of marijuana and learn about the effects each may have, as well as a recommendation about the best time of day to use it. Nobody wants to be up all night from some spicy Vietnamese Sativa because they had no idea that it would have that effect. Willie Nelson seems like a chill guy so who could have guessed, right? Wikileaf can help take the guessing out of the equation.

The app is location-aware (or you can manually search a location if you would rather) and also gives you information about the dispensaries and shops around you. Because marijuana isn’t available legally everywhere, you’ll find listings for dispensaries and shops for cities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington. I quickly noticed that Washington, DC wasn’t on the list but a quick search of the Wikileaf website let me know that this is because of the weird restrictions for recreational sales forced by an inactive federal government.
Willie Nelson seems like a chill guy, right?
Disillusion from a non-functional legislative body aside, one of the best features of the Wikileaf app is the at-a-glace price map. Pull up a Google map of the area you’re searching, and you can see a pin for each business in the right spot labeled with the lowest priced goods they’re offering. You can search prices this way by the gram, eighth ounce, quarter ounce, half ounce or ounce. A quick tap on any of the pins opens a pop-up that you can use to give the business a call, write a review, get directions or open a page with a full list of what they’re selling and information or photos from both the business and other Wikileaf users.
If weed is legal where you are and you’re partaking, having an app that makes shopping easier only makes sense. Wikileaf isn’t the first app of its kind in Google Play, and it won’t be the last, but it looks like a great option that will be able to help you save time and money. Those are two things everyone can appreciate.

Project Include cuts ties with Y Combinator over Thiel and Trump
Project Include, a high-profile Silicon Valley diversity initiative, has officially cut ties with the influential Y Combinator venture incubator due to its ties to prominent Donald Trump supporter, Peter Thiel. The venture capitalist gave a speech at the Republican National Convention, and is reported to be offering a $1.25 million donation to Trump. Project Include cofounder Ellen Pao called it “a direct contribution to creating hate and instilling fear.”
In the post, Pao gave a nod to Y Combinator’s work tackling diversity, acknowledging its advances in diversity and inclusion in its own ranks. “We saw an opportunity to work with YC companies interested in building vibrant and diverse organizations, and we actively invited YC as a contributor to our VC Include program,” added Pao. While the group has severed its ties with YC directly, Pao told Motherboard that it would still work with YC companies — albeit directly.
Ellen Pao previously worked inside the ranks of venture capital at Kleiner Perkins. She eventually sued the company for gender discrimination. She then became the CEO of Reddit, but left following a site revolt where the entire front page of the influential site was aimed squarely at abusing the then-chief executive.
Sam Altman, president of Y Combinator, has already stated his support of Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton — and justified keeping Thiel on board — here. “I liked the choice I made,” he told Motherboard, when it came to keeping the venture capitalist. In his own blog post, he said: “The way we got into a situation with Trump as a major party nominee in the first place was by not talking to people who are very different than we are. The polarization of the country into two parallel political realities is not good for any of us. We should talk to each other more, not less.”
Pao notes in her post: “We agree that people shouldn’t be fired for their political views, but this isn’t a disagreement on tax policy, this is advocating hatred and violence.”
I have several thoughts on @sama’s blog post about YC’s relationship w/ Peter Thiel, but I want to focus on these paragraphs in particular. pic.twitter.com/FdbSZAif82

Cleveland pitcher leaves playoff game due to drone injury
I’m not sure if “drone” has appeared on a major league injury report before, but one of the flying machines has had an impact on an MLB ALCS playoff game. No one was injured by a drone at the ballpark, but Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer cut his throwing hand on Friday and required stitches ahead of a scheduled start in game two of the team’s series against Toronto. He healed enough to start tonight in game three, but the cut re-opened during the first inning and he had to leave early.
Your browser does not support iframes.
The drone that hurt Bauer’s hand was apparently a model he was building himself, and when he plugged in the battery only one rotor spun, causing the injury. USA Today reports he’s had issues with UAVs before, as the team banned him from flying over the practice facility, and he got one stuck in a tree in Kansas City. I hope Bauer’s passion for the hobby isn’t dulled by this event, but as a person who also needs their hands to work, maybe I can suggest the fully-enclosed Passport drone for next time?

Your PlayStation VR experience is best with a charging dock

This all-in-one charging and display stand for PSVR will solve a few problems.
Charging, displaying, and storing your PlayStation VR gear can be a hassle. You need dual Mini USB cables for the Move controllers, you need a Micro-USB cable for the DualShock 4 controller, and you need a safe place to keep the head-mounted display (HMD) and its cables. Without a charging and display solution, you’ll have an unsightly mess of cables in your VR space, and might get stuck waiting for a controller to charge while you could be in VR.

Unlocked AT&T BlackBerry Priv will now have updates handled directly by BlackBerry
A changing of the guard — for the better.
Good news for folks who bought an unlocked AT&T branded BlackBerry Priv: updates for your phone will now be handled by BlackBerry directly and bypass any AT&T slow lane silliness.

As CrackBerry reports, this new policy starts today (October 17, 2016) and will be in place for an imminent update headed to unlocked Priv phones.
It’s important to note that this only applies to AT&T-branded phones that were purchased unlocked and not for AT&T locked devices that have been SIM unlocked after purchase. There has been no word if phones with branding from other carriers will see the same treatment.
BlackBerry has been working on this solution for a good part of 2016, and it’s nice to see it finally arrive.

Daily Briefing: LG V20 and AXON 7 Mini preorders are coming soon, Cuba gets the Chrome Web Store

Your daily dose of Android goodness in one ready-to-serve package. It’s delicious!
Happy Monday everyone!
We’re at the tail end of phone season here in Android land, but there are still some to look out for. The LG V20 is almost ready to appear on shelves and hands, and we’ve got a smaller sibling to the well-received AXON 7 from ZTE on its way. Not to mention Google’s Pixel which is due to hit mailboxes in just a few days.
That means we can all take a deep breath and have time to look at the other things that make the Android ecosystem so awesome — Android Wear has some changes coming and we’ll be digging through the developer previews and the same goes for Android 7.1 which should be rolling out in preview form for the Nexus 6P and 5X before the end of the month. That’s followed closely by Google Home and Google WiFi, new Chromecasts, and, well forget what I said about taking a deep breath!
Here’s what’s going on today to keep all of us busy!
T-Mobile opens up V20 pre-orders at $769
Pre-orders get a free set of B&O Play H3 headphones, a $150 value, and customers can knock up to $200 more off the MSRP by turning in their current phone. The V20 also supports T-Mobile’s new AWS-3 network, as we previously knew. In-store availability is set for October 28.
Acer refreshes Chromebook 15 line with longer battery life
The new models come in black instead of the previous white, sport up to 12 hours of battery life and will be compatible with Android apps from Google Play in the future. The core of the experience remains the same with a 15.6-inch display, Celeron N3060 processor and a minimum of 2GB of RAM. Pre-orders are already live at Walmart.
ZTE’s Axon 7 Mini is under $300 and available for pre-order
Interested in ZTE’s Axon 7, but don’t want to cart around a 5.5-inch device? ZTE’s launching the smaller, mid-range Axon 7 Mini on Halloween. Best Buy will be the first to offer the device in gold, with other retailers to follow suit. You can read up on its specifications and availability here.

The Chrome Web Store opens in Cuba
Starting October 19, developers can publish free apps, themes, and extensions for a new Cuban Chrome Web Store. Content currently marked for all regions will be published in Cuba by default, but developers can fine tune their regional settings in the Chrome store publishing settings. Read more here.
Unlocked AT&T Priv will get updated directly from BlackBerry
Folks who bought an unlocked AT&T branded BlackBerry Priv will now have their updates handled directly from the Waterloo mothership instead of them going through AT&T. This is great news and we hope it extends to models built for other carriers.

Porn sites blocked California users today to protest proposed law
Several porn websites have a new tactic to alert their electorate living in California: Blocking them. On the ballot next month is proposition 60, which would require adult performers to use condoms for all videos made in the state. If they don’t, the law would allow any citizen in the state to sue producers and distributors of prophylactic-lacking porn. In protest, popular sites Vivid, Evil Angel and Kink, among others, have pop-ups urging visitors with California IP addresses to vote ‘no’ on the proposition come election day. If it passes, some are considering blocking those users entirely to protect themselves from litigation.

Prop 60 is sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and operates much like Los Angeles’ Measure B initiative passed in 2012, but would apply to the entire state. The adult industry is broadly opposed to it on the grounds that it restricts performer choice and the lawsuit threats will push some productions underground, resulting in worse conditions. Further, they argue it would expose studios and actors/actresses to harassment by stalkers, trolls and anti-porn activists.
Vivid, Evil Angel and Kink have interrupted or outright blocked users with California IP addresses all day today, but if prop 60 becomes law, they could ban those visitors entirely. Whether that would actually protect the studios, producers and performers from lawsuits is uncertain, but it could logically lower the chance that a viewer within the state would see content that violated the statute.

What’s on your TV: ‘Black Mirror,’ ‘Desus & Mero,’ ‘The Walking Dead’
The Walking Dead left us on a cliffhanger during last season’s finale, and we’ll (presumably) find out which longtime cast member dies Sunday night when it returns. Until then, there’s Viceland’s new podcast turned PTI-style latenight show Desus & Mero (the brand is strong), and the third season of Black Mirror premieres on Netflix Friday morning.
Also, the surprisingly awesome musical show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is back for a second season, while F1 races at COTA Sunday afternoon. For gamers, there’s Battlefield 1 and Civilization VI,and movie fans can collect Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth on Blu-ray from Criterion. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Razer’s THX purchase means cinema-approved VR and laptops
Longtime cinephiles might be disappointed by the following news: THX will now operate as an “independent startup” under the Razer banner. Yep, the gaming PC and peripherals company. The cinema certification outfit founded by George Lucas will keep its management and employees (phew) and will continue to operate as it has for the past 33 years just under a new owner, according to a prepared statement. “With their focus on quality, design and innovation, Razer supports our vision to optimize and deliver the best audiovisual experiences to audiences worldwide,” THX CEO Ty Ahmad-Taylor said in a canned press release quote.
We’re excited to announce that @THX has joined the Razer family.

— RΛZΞR (@Razer) October 17, 2016
How much this deal cost Razer isn’t clear, nor is how the company will leverage its new purchase. What we do know, however, is what Razer plans to do with the company. THX explicitly said that it’s working to expand its approval stamp to headphones, augmented reality and virtual reality, “and their enabling devices.” So, THX-approved PCs are going to be a thing too, in addition to things like speakers, laptops and maybe even monitors from Razer.

Apple’s Website Mentions ‘Apple Watch Victory,’ a Possible Alternate Name for Nike+ Apple Watch
References to a mysterious “Apple Watch Victory” have shown up on Apple’s website in the United Arab Emirates, hinting at an alternate name the company may have considered for the Apple Watch Nike+.
An AppleCare+ support page for the United Arab Emirates, shared by 9to5Mac, mentions AppleCare+ options for the “Apple Watch” and “Apple Watch Victory,” a product that does not exist.
On a similar page for Canada, the “Apple Watch” and the “Apple Watch Nike+” are listed in the same text, suggesting Apple perhaps planned to call the Apple Watch Nike+ the Apple Watch Victory at some point before changing the name to something more brand oriented.
United Arab Emirates AppleCare+ support page on top, Canadian AppleCare+ support page on bottom
It’s possible “Apple Watch Victory” is an unreleased product, a scrapped product or an alternate name for a different version of the Apple Watch, but given the evidence of the two similar AppleCare+ pages, it seems most likely “Apple Watch Victory” was a code name or an alternate name considered for the Apple Watch Apple designed in collaboration with Nike.
Apple’s AppleCare+ support page for the Apple Watch in the United States is worded differently, referring only to the Apple Watch without a mention of specific models in the section in question.

While inconsequential, it’s always interesting to get an inside look at the changes that a product goes through before release and a glimpse at one of the names that Apple used as a code name or considered using for the Apple Watch Nike line.
The Apple Watch Nike+, which is an Apple Watch Sport model with Nike branding, Nike software, and a unique perforated Sport Band, officially launches on Friday, October 28. 38mm models are priced at $369 and 42mm models are priced at $399.
