The Chevy Bolt will have a 238-mile range

Chevy has finally announced the range of its upcoming Bolt all-electric vehicle. At 238 miles, the relatively inexpensive EV should squelch some of the range anxiety that’s kept drivers from making the switch from gas-powered vehicles.

Announced at CES in January, the Bolt is squarely aimed at Tesla’s upcoming Model 3 in range and price. While the Model 3 isn’t expected to land until late 2017, the Bolt is expected to be in showrooms before the end of 2016.

Chevy and Tesla won’t be the only two automakers battling for EV-buying dollars. Volkswagen is expected to unveil a long-range electric car at the Paris Auto Show in November and Ford CEO Mark Fields has already indicated that the company will be producing its own affordable EV. And of course, the Nissan Leaf is expected to get a range increase.

The Chevy Bolt will set you back less than $37,500 before federal and state tax credits and will go on sale later this year.

Over 70 Galaxy Note 7 phones have overheated in the US alone

When Samsung first issued an official statement about the Galaxy Note 7’s battery issue, the company said there were 35 cases of phones overheating from around the globe. Well, we’re way past that number now. According to the Canadian government, the company has received over 70 reports in the US alone. See, Samsung teamed up with Health Canada to help it get the recall ball rolling in the country. In an effort to convince consumers to return their shiny new phones that might suddenly explode, the government agency added that tidbit in the report.

Those 70-plus cases include a few high-profile ones you may have seen in the news lately. A man in Florida said his Jeep Cherokee went up in flames after a Note 7 exploded inside, while a six-year-old boy from Brooklyn suffered burns when a Note 7 blew up in his hands. Although 70 cases may not seem like that many, the Consumer Product Safety Commission already issued an official warning asking people to stop using the device. Various airlines all over the globe also banned passengers from using the phone on their planes.

Swapping your Note 7 for a loaner phone or a new one that’s been declared safe really sounds like the best option at this point. If you haven’t looked it up yet, check out Samsung’s explanation on how recalls will work within the US and ask your carrier what your choices are.

Freeze individual servings of soup or stew in a muffin tin – CNET

freezing-soup.jpg

Soup storage is easier than making muffins.

Alina Bradford/CNET

As the weather gets colder, I make a massive amount of soup– and end up with tons of leftovers. The best solution is to freeze it for later, but defrosting a Tupperware bowl full of soup can take almost as long as cooking it from scratch.

Plus, what if you just want some soup for yourself?

Well, there’s a way to freeze soup (or stews, or broth!) into individual servings that are easily defrosted. All it takes is a muffin tin, wax paper and large freezer bags.

Here’s how:

Wait until the soup is cooled.
Pour the soup into the muffin tin (preferably silicone), leaving a little space at the top so the soup has room to expand as it freezes.
Put the muffin tin in your freezer for two to three hours, or until the soup is frozen.
Pop the soup muffins out of the tin and wrap each one in wax paper.
Put the wrapped soup muffins into a freezer bag.
Close the freezer bag almost all the way and push the air out of the bag before finishing the seal.
Label the bag with the date and contents using a marker.
Put the bag of soup muffins into the freezer.

If you have a lot of soup, repeat the steps or use several muffin tins. It doesn’t really matter what type of muffin pans you use, but silicone muffin pans ensure that the frozen soup doesn’t stick to the pan after freezing. If all you have is aluminum, run a little hot water over the bottom of the pan and the frozen soup should pop right out.

When you have a soup craving, just select one or two of the soup muffins and defrost it in the microwave on low for around 5 minutes. This time will vary depending on your type of microwave, so keep an eye on the soup. Another option is to throw the soup in a sauce pan on low heat.

Why iPhone 5 and 5C owners should not download iOS 10 right away – CNET

iOS 10 — the new operating system for iPhone — is compatible with the iPhone 5 and newer devices. But before iPhone 5 and 5C owners update, we would offer the following advice: look before you leap.

Why iPhone 5 and 5C owners should wait

Because the iPhone 5 and 5C models are on the bottom rung of the iOS 10 compatibility ladder, if any iPhone is going to experience issues running the new iOS, these two models are the likely culprits. While the new iPhone 7 models feature Apple’s latest A10 processor, the iPhone 5 and 5C are four generations behind with the A6 chip. (In between sit the A9-based iPhone 6S and SE, the A8-based iPhone 6, and the A7-based iPhone 5S.) In addition, the iPhone 5 and 5C feature only 1GB of RAM; the iPhone 6S and onward incorporate 2GB of RAM.

Until iOS 10 is released on Tuesday, we can’t put it through its paces in CNET Labs testing, but it’s reasonable to speculate that the older A6-based iPhone 5 and 5C might struggle with powering all of iOS 10’s bells and whistles.

CNET’s Sharon Profis has used the Gold Master version of the iOS 10 beta on an iPhone 6 and feels that it slowed down performance considerably. Of course, the official release of iOS 10 will offer enhancements to the Gold Master beta, so perhaps all compatible devices will run iOS 10 swimmingly.

Then again, maybe not. We aren’t advising against updating to iOS 10, but would urge iPhone 5 and 5C owners to proceed with caution. Let the official release of iOS 10 breathe for a few days to see if there are any reports of it causing performance issues before taking the plunge yourself.

If you are ready to update, learn how to prepare your iPhone for iOS 10. Of course, if you are planning to update to iOS 10, you need to back up your iPhone first. Lastly, learn to love the one you’re with, and resist upgrading to the iPhone 7.

How to prepare your iPhone for iOS 10 – CNET

On Tuesday, Apple is set to release iOS 10, the next version of its mobile operating system for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. It adds many new features, including a more interactive Messages app, an entirely new lock screen, and redesigned Maps and Music apps. Apple has also opened up Siri to other developers, so expect many of your favorite apps soon to offer voice support.

But before you upgrade, take a few minutes now to get your current iOS device(s) ready to upgrade.

Is your phone compatible with iOS 10?

The first step is to determine if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch can run iOS 10. Here is Apple’s list of compatible devices:

ios-10-compatibility.jpgEnlarge Image

Apple

The devices that were compatible with iOS 9 but aren’t on the iOS 10 list are: iPhone 4S, iPad Air, iPad (3rd generation), iPad 2, iPad Mini (1st generation) and iPod Touch (5th generation).

Make some room

If you are like me (and many other iPhone users, I’d like to think), then you’ve been meaning to go through your phone and delete apps you no longer use. Use the launch of iOS 10 as the impetus to finally perform a bit of maintenance on your device. This exercise will not only free up some storage space but also remove many app icons to make navigating your device easier.

The biggest occupier of your iPhone’s storage is almost certainly your large (and ever-growing) photo and video library. After deleting unwanted apps, it’s time to scroll through the Photos app and delete the photos and videos you no longer want. And for the photos and videos you want to keep, you can move them to the cloud or a computer so that they’re safely stored without taking up space on your iPhone. Rick Broida offers a few cloud services you can use to back up your iPhone’s photos. Alternatively, you can connect your iOS device to your Mac and move some of your library to the Mac Photos app.

Update your apps

To lessen the chance of some of your apps running into problems with iOS 10, you should update them. Open the App Store app, click the Updates button in the lower-right corner and then tap the Update All button in the upper-right corner. (To turn on automatic app updates, go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and tap the toggle switch for Updates in the Automatic Downloads section.)

Back it up

Before you perform a major OS update, it’s always a good idea — nay, a necessity — to back up your device. You have two options, iCloud or iTunes.

Follow this guide to backing up your iPhone using iCloud or iTunes.

With unwanted apps removed, your photos and videos library cleaned out and, most importantly, your device freshly backed up, you will be ready to make the move to iOS 10 as soon as Apple releases it. You’ll be able to update to iOS 10 directly from your device via Settings > General > Software Update or, if you insist, via iTunes.

Apple’s latest upgrade to iOS is packed with useful features that will give your iPhone or iPad a much-needed refresh. But if you’re still not sure whether to take the plunge, here’s a look at some of our favorites and how to find them.

Raise to wake

The first thing you’ll notice when you pick up your phone is that the lock screen turns on without your even touching the home button. The new raise-to-wake feature uses the M9 co-processor on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus to detect motion so you can check the time and notifications on the fly. To turn off the feature, go the “Display and brightness” option in the Settings page, and click on the raise-to-wake switch.

Quick camera launch

Launching the camera app from your lockscreen is even faster in iOS 10. Just swipe left from the main page to capture that candid shot.

Sort photos by faces and places

The photo app in iOS 10 automatically sorts through your endless reel and organizes your shots based on places and people in the Albums tab. Or you can really narrow down your search by date, place or person using the search feature at the top of this page. To assign a name to a face, just click on a picture where that person appears, press Details, People and Add name at the top.

Hide stock apps

Apple finally lets you get rid of those useless apps cluttering your home screen in iOS 10. Delete as you would any other app: Press and hold on the app icon until it begins to shake and hit the X to remove. This won’t get rid of the app for good, but at least it will remain hidden until you redownload in the App store.

3D-touch Control Center

Apple doesn’t let you customize your Control Center yet, but at least you’ll have more shortcuts to chose from on this screen. If you have an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus you can 3D-touch the icons at the bottom to pull up a new list of options without leaving the page, or slide left to access the music remote.

Voice mail transcription

Next time you get a missed call from an unknown number, don’t bother listening to the voice mail. iOS 10 gives you a full transcription of the message directly from your Voicemail tab in the phone app. Click on the name or number in this screen to open the transcription and share it as an email or text from the share icon at the top. The transcription is not perfect, and it’s only available in English at the time this article was written.

Bilingual keyboard

If you type in more than one language, chances are this feature will save you from an autocorrect nightmare. Once you’ve installed the keyboard languages you want in the Settings, the Messages app will automatically detect which one you are typing to save you from having to switch manually from the globe icon.

Live links in messages

Another practical feature in the Messages app that lets you preview a link without leaving the chat window. Paste the URL in the chat bubble and send. The app automatically renders a thumbnail preview with the title, or the full video player if it’s a YouTube link.

Use Siri with third-party apps

Voice control has become much more useful in iOS 10 now that Siri can control more than just Apple’s own apps. Some of the third-party apps with Siri integration at launch include Square Cash, WhatsApp, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

Lyrics!

If you’re a sucker for singalongs, Apple music now lets you belt out your favorite Adele song right from the app. Start playing the song, click on the song bar at the bottom to maximize and scroll down until you see the lyrics. Not all songs have this option at the time we wrote this article.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. For more details on all the new features in iOS 10 check out this article.

iMessage App Store adds stickers and games to iOS 10 texting

iOS 10 beta users can now explore a whole new world of add-ons for iMessage, according to 9to5mac. Cupertino has launched its new iMessage App Store for iOS 10 beta, and you can use it to download games and apps like OpenTable and SquareMoney. You can also download sticker packs from the store — hey, it won’t be complete without cute stickers in the mix — some of which come from big-name companies like Disney, Bandai Namco and Sanrio. Some of the apps are tied to ones you’ll have to get from the main App Store, but others are completely independent. If you’re not a beta tester, don’t worry: check your Settings app’s Update section tomorrow, September 13th, to download and install iOS 10.

Researchers say dolphins speak to each other in full sentences

It’s not just the family dog that can understand complex language. Researchers at Karadag Nature Reserve in Feodosia, Russia have made an incredible discovery: dolphins are able to speak to one another in complete sentences containing up to five words apiece.

We’ve known for years that dolphins are ludicrously intelligent creatures and regularly signal each other to warn of danger using clicks and whistles. However researchers at Karadag managed to record a pair of Black Sea bottlenose dolphins, Yasha and Yana, carrying on what can only be described as a conversation. Using a new type of high-fidelity underwater microphone capable of discerning the dolphins’ various sounds, researchers found that the animals use “words” and, even more incredibly, patiently wait until the other has finished with its “sentence” before replying.

All we need to do now is figure out what they’re actually saying. Past research has translated a select number of dolphin “words” that identified individuals and alerted them to the presence of food. But currently, trying to understand what Yasha and Yana are talking about is like trying to follow a conversation in Mandarin if all you know how to say is, “Hey Jeff, there’s cheese here.” Further research is clearly needed but this is a huge discovery that could eventually allow us to speak with another species.

What’s new in WatchOS 3?

Apple is about to release the latest version of the WatchOS operating system, WatchOS 3, to the public.

The software, which is meant for Apple Watch, debuted at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It’s a significant update that brings new apps, new watch faces, a new dock, new activity sharing, a new Breathe app, and a slew of navigation and performance improvements, among other things. Apple said “it’s going to feel like a whole new watch”. Here’s everything we know so far about WatchOS 3.

WatchOS 3: When will it be available?

Apple released WatchOS 3 to developers on 13 June. Since then, it has seeded six betas and the golden master version. The final version will be made available to the public on 13 September.

WatchOS 3: How much does it cost?

Like all of Apple’s software updates, WatchOS 3 will be available for free.

WatchOS 3: How can you get it?

Your Apple Watch must be at least 50-per cent charged and connected to the magnetic charger. Once it is, follow these steps:

  • Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi
  • Launch the Apple Watch app on your iPhone
  • Tap the My Watch tab
  • Tap General > Software Update > Download and Install
  • Enter your iPhone Passcode.
  • Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Tap Install on your iPhone and/or your Apple Watch.

WatchOS 3: What’s new?

Apple

Dock: The Apple Watch’s side button, which in WatchOS 2 would surface a list of contacts when pressed, now brings up a dedicated Dock that has been designed to surface your favourite apps and recently used apps. Favourites in the new Dock are kept in Apple Watch’s memory and can open seven-times faster than a standard Apple Watch app. Also, the new Dock is customisable and supports up to 10 apps. It’s replacing the old Glances view, too, which you previously had to swipe up on a watch face to access (if you do that gesture now, you’ll see a new Control Center). Because it’s replacing Glances, it is used a lot like Glances. So, when swiping left and right through apps, you’ll see full information from an app without actually having to launch it.

Faces: There are three new watch faces in watchOS 3: Minnie Mouse (similar to Mickey Mouse face, except the dress is customisable to match Apple Watch bands), Activity (shows a larger view of your daily activity rings at a glance and can be set to an analog clock, a digital clock, or a chronograph), and Numerals (displays a single number with watch hands; the number changes and rotates as time passes). Also, with WatchOS 3, you have to swipe left or right on a face to swap between watch faces.

SOS: A new SOS feature, which is activated by holding down the side button on the Apple Watch for three seconds, will auto-call emergency services over Wi-Fi or an iPhone connection. It works everywhere in the world, detects your location, and calls the relevant number for you. Once the emergency call has been placed, Apple Watch will notify your emergency contacts with a map of your location. It also supports Medical ID.

Activity Sharing: A new Activity Sharing feature lets friends and family share their activity and workout information with each other. You can access it by swiping right on the Activity rings view of the Activity app. In this view, you’ll see the activity rings of selected friends, and you can sort by metrics like steps, exercise minutes, and workouts. You’ll also see built-in messaging options.

Workouts: Developers can now make their third-party workout apps run in the background of Apple Watch. That means, with just the raise of a wrist, you can see real-time workout metrics from these apps. Developers will also have access to the heart-rate sensor and gyroscope. Furthermore, Apple said that Apple Watch can now detect when a runner stops and pauses the workout until running resumes. There’s also a new option for naming “Other” workouts not listed in the app. And finally, if you press the Digital Crown and the side button during a workout, Apple Watch will pause a workout. To end a workout, swipe right (instead of using force touch).

Complications: Apple said complications can now be added to watch faces that didn’t support them in watchOS 2, such as Photo, Timelapse, Motion, and Extra Large, and there are new complications available through new built-in apps, including Breathe and Reminders, which can be added to any watch face that supports complications. Some existing watch faces can also now display more complications at one time.

Breathe app: An all-new app called Breathe is available for Apple Watch. It guides you through deep breathing techniques. According to Apple, Breathe can help Apple Watch wearers incorporate meditation and breathing exercises into their daily routines. Breathing exercises can be done for one to five minutes. Apple Watch also also offers “Breathe” reminders, like stand reminders.

Home app: With iOS 10 for iPhone, Apple has given iOS users a new Home app for controlling all their HomeKit-enabled devices. There’s also a Home app for Apple Watch, with quick-access controls for doing things like turning lights on/off or adjusting the thermostat.

Reminders app: Apple Watch now has a Reminder app for to-do lists. It works just like the app for iPhone.

Find My Friends app: Apple Watch now has a Find My Friends app for locating friends and family. It works just like the app for iPhone.

Heart Rate app: A new Heart Rate app on the Apple Watch replaces Heart Rate Glance (because Glances has been replaced by the Dock).

Find My Apple Watch: You can now get the location of your Apple Watch using the Find My iPhone app.

Siri: Siri has a new interface. Also, you’ll feel a haptic tap when Siri has stopped listening, and Siri now lets you know when she is looking up information by saying “Hang on…” or “Hold on…”.

Apple

Wheelchair setting: A new Wheelchair setting customises activity options for wheelchair users. This allows Apple Watch to accurately add wheelchair pushes to all-day calorie goals. There are also wheelchair workouts, and the “time to stand” reminder is called “time to roll”.

Continuity: Apple Watch can now be used to unlock a password-protected Mac, thanks to new Continuity functionality. Unlocking is done through proximity, meaning a Mac owner just needs to be near their watch for the feature to work.

Scribble: The Messages app now includes a Scribble feature that lets you write replies on the Apple Watch face using your finger.

Face Gallery: The Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app for iPhone makes it easier to customise watch faces with colours and complications.

Apple Pay: Apple Pay is now available within apps on Apple Watch, allowing you to make in-app purchases directly on your watch. Developers can also build Apple Pay into their watch apps.

Digital zooming: You can now use the Digital Crown to control the iPhone’s digital zooming capabilities.

Disable screenshots: In order to disable screenshots, press the the Digital Crown and Side Button at the same time.

Notifications: When you dismiss a notification now, you’ll go back to the watch face instead of the Notification Center.
