macOS Sierra and iOS 10: Universal Clipboard for Cross Device Copy/Paste
New in macOS Sierra and iOS 10 is a Universal Clipboard feature that makes it much easier to transfer links, text, photos, and more between different devices. With Universal Clipboard, you can copy something on your Mac and paste it on your iPhone, or vice versa.
It’s already been possible to open up web pages across multiple devices, but now that functionality has been extended further. With macOS Sierra and iOS 10, when you copy a link on one device, it’s uploaded to iCloud and available on all other devices where you’re signed in with your Apple ID. You can do things like look up a recipe on your Mac, copy the text, and paste it on your iPhone, or copy a photo from an iPhone to an iPad.
Using the feature is as simple as copying something on one device, switching over to another device, and hitting “Paste.” It can sometime takes a second or two for the copy to register, but it works seamlessly. There are no visual indicators for Universal Clipboard — it’s all behind the scenes.
Apple has implemented an expiration for Universal Clipboard, so you only have a few minutes to paste something to another device once it’s been copied. After that expiration time, which appears to be about two minutes, cross-device paste stops working and will need to be reactivated with another copy.
There are limitations on what can be copied where. Text can be copied almost anywhere on a Mac or iOS device, but images are somewhat more limited and will need to be copied into an app, like Pages, so it isn’t a solid alternative to AirDrop for photo file transfers.
Universal Clipboard is a Continuity feature, so to get it to work, you will need to be signed into the same Apple ID across all devices. Bluetooth will also need to be turned on for the feature to work, and Bluetooth LE is required. The following Macs work with Universal Clipboard:
– MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
– MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
– MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
– Mac mini (2012 or newer)
– iMac (2012 or newer)
– Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Continuity features are sometimes unreliable, and there have been reports about spotty performance with Universal Clipboard during the beta testing period. Sometimes it helps to sign in and out of iCloud to restore functionality, and you’ll need to make sure Handoff is activated on your iOS device (Settings –> General –> Handoff).
Aside from a Bluetooth connection and the same Apple ID, there are no other requirements. Wi-Fi is not necessary, as Universal Clipboard will work with cellular data.
Previously introduced Continuity features allow users to do things like make and answer phone calls on their Macs, get SMS messages on the Mac, and transfer tasks from one device to another with Handoff. Other new Continuity features in macOS Sierra include Apple Pay on the web and Auto Unlock with Apple Watch.
macOS Sierra is available as of today and can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

macOS Sierra: Photos Gains ‘Memories’ and Messages Adds Rich Links, Tapback, and Large Emoji
One of the simpler updates arriving in macOS Sierra is an overhauled experience for both Photos and Messages, bringing each app closer to their newly-updated iOS 10 counterparts. For Messages, that means users will now be able to use the Mac version of the app to send and receive rich links and Tapback messages, along with larger emoji characters when three or fewer are sent in a message.
Otherwise, Messages for Mac doesn’t have the other additions introduced in iOS 10, including Digital Touch messages and the Messages App Store with sticker functionality. Users will still have to open their iPhones to send these types of messages, although macOS Sierra will better accommodate the visual placement of stickers and Tapback notifications than previous versions of Apple’s desktop software.
On the Photos side of things, the Mac version of the app will now have the “Memories” tab that was introduced in iOS 10. The feature intelligently curates photo collections based on location, date, and even the people within each image, and puts them all into new short videos for you to view. Although the feature is streamlined, users can choose to customize each Memory to their liking, similar to the Memories editing process in iOS 10.
Some of the memory categories Photos surfaces includes Recent events, Last Week, Last Weekend, Year summary, Trips, Birthdays, and more. Users who have already set up their People album in iOS 10 will have to re-scan their image library in Sierra since facial recognition settings don’t carry over between devices. There will also be an new “Places” album to see the location of every image you’ve taken on a world map.

Other tidbit updates in Photos include a new “Brilliance” tool to improve photo detail through adding contrast and highlights, and Live Photo editing with filters and various other adjustment instruments. Third-party developers are also now able to use a Live Photo Editing API to create tools for editing Live Photos in Sierra.
macOS Sierra is available as a free download on the Mac App Store starting today. Check out the MacRumors Sierra roundup for more information on the new operating system, and keep a lookout for the rest of our macOS coverage.

macOS Sierra: Picture in Picture Mode for Safari and iTunes Videos
With macOS Sierra, users can can float a video window from Safari or iTunes over the desktop or an app thanks to a new picture-in-picture mode. The feature enables Mac users to play a video in any one of the four corners of the desktop and resize it to see more or less of the window behind it.
The video remains pinned above the desktop and apps, including in full-screen mode and split view, so long as the Safari tab or iTunes window where the video originates remains open. The picture-in-picture window has buttons to close or unpin the video, and play and pause controls, but no rewind, fast forward, or scrubbing options.

In Safari, picture-in-picture mode currently only works on certain websites, such as YouTube, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal, but the feature should become more widely available as other websites implement it. In the meantime, it does not work on websites like Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, AMC, or The New York Times.

Even on YouTube, enabling picture-in-picture mode currently requires somewhat of a workaround. Since there is no picture-in-picture mode button in the video player itself, like in the CNN screenshot above, enabling the feature on YouTube requires right-clicking the video player twice until a contextual menu pops up with the option.
macOS Sierra was released today as a free download on the Mac App Store.

macOS Sierra: How to Unlock Your Mac With Your Apple Watch
macOS Sierra makes it easier for Apple Watch owners to unlock their Macs with a new “Auto Unlock” feature that lets the Apple Watch be used for authentication purposes instead of a traditional password.
It’s a feature that’s limited to more recent Macs so it’s not going to work on every machine that can run Sierra, but when it is available, Auto Unlock is a super useful feature that genuinely saves a bit of time. It isn’t enabled by default, so there are a few steps to go through to turn Auto Unlock on. Here’s how to use it.
Navigate to the Apple logo on the upper left hand of the screen and select “System Preferences.”
Click on “Security & Privacy” from the first row of apps.
Auto Unlock is an option under the “General” section. Click the check box to turn it on.
Enter your password.

Once enabled, Auto Unlock works automatically whenever your authenticated Apple Watch is near your Mac (as in within a few feet). When waking a Mac from sleep and the password entry screen pops up, it will say “Unlocking with Apple Watch…” instead of bringing up the password text box.

A few seconds later, the Mac will unlock and you will receive a notification on your Apple Watch letting you know the unlocking was successful. If Auto Unlock fails to authenticate for some reason, the password entry option will pop up after approximately 10 seconds and you will be required to enter your password to log in.

Auto Unlock is a Continuity feature, so it is limited to some of Apple’s more recent machines. It is supported by all Mac models introduced in mid-2013 or later, and it requires an Apple Watch running watchOS 3 paired with an iPhone 5 or later. Handoff must be turned on in System Preferences (General –> Allow Handoff) and your iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac must be signed into the same iCloud account.

To enable Auto Unlock, you will also need to turn on Two-Factor Authentication if it isn’t on already.
For those of you using the original Two-Step Verification instead of the Two-Factor Authentication feature introduced with iOS 10, you will need to disable Two-Step Verification on the Apple ID management site and then enable Two-Factor Authentication on an iOS device. A passcode also needs to be established on the Apple Watch.

Apple doesn’t offer troubleshooting tips if Auto Unlock isn’t working, but signing out of iCloud and back in again and restarting your devices may help solve any issues.
There are still instances where you will need to log in with a password, like after rebooting your machine, but for the most part, Auto Unlock successfully replaces password entry on the Mac.

macOS Sierra: Apps Gain Safari-Style Tabs
One of the new features in macOS Sierra is tabbed windows throughout the operating system, bringing a feature that was once limited to Safari to all Mac apps, first and third party.
In apps like Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, when you work with multiple documents, there’s now an option to organize them into separate tabs instead of separate windows. This feature is available in most first-party Apple apps, including Mail, Maps, TextEdit, and more.
To use the new tab feature in an app that supports it, whenever two or more windows are open, choose the “Window” option from the menu bar and select “Merge All Windows.” The individual windows will become a single window with tabs to switch between files.

Tabs in apps work just like tabs in Safari. In Apple’s apps, Command + T will open a new tab automatically, as will the “+” button, and tabs can be dragged out into their own separate windows.
In some cases, third-party apps will automatically support tabbed windows, but for other apps, developers may have to make some changes to enable it. Text editing app Byword, for example, now has an option to combine all open windows into a single window with tab, and other apps will soon follow now that macOS Sierra is available to the public.

macOS Sierra is available as a free download from the Mac App Store starting today. For more information on the features included in the latest operating system update, make sure to check out our macOs Sierra roundup.

iPhone 7 Component Costs Estimated to Start at $220
iPhone 7 component costs are estimated to start at $219.80, which is $36.89 higher than iPhone 6s, according to a preliminary teardown [Excel] of a 32GB model by IHS Markit.
The display remains the most expensive component, costing an estimated $43, followed by an Intel modem and other baseband chips worth an estimated total of $33.90.
Apple’s quad-core A10 Fusion chip is the third most expensive item on the bill of materials, costing an estimated $26.90. Meanwhile, the larger 1,920 mAh battery is said to cost just $2.50.
The larger rear-facing iSight camera and improved 7-megapixel front-facing FaceTime camera cost a combined $19.90, according to IHS Markit. Electromechanical components, including the Taptic Engine, antennas, connectors, microphones, and stereo speakers, cost an estimated $16.70 combined.
iPhone 7’s 2GB of RAM supplied by Samsung, and 32GB of flash storage supplied by SK Hynix, are estimated to cost a combined $16.40. An audio codec and audio amplifier supplied by Cirrus Logic, an NFC controller supplied by NXP, a Bosch Sensortec-made barometer, along with an accelerometer, gyroscope, Touch ID, proximity sensor, and other sensors, cost an estimated $14 altogether.
The accessories included in the iPhone 7 box, including a Lightning-to-USB cable, Lightning-to-3.5mm audio adapter, EarPods with a Lightning connector, and 5W USB power adapter cost an estimated $11.80 combined.
IHS raises Apple’s total cost to manufacture the iPhone 7 to $224.80 after adding $5 in “basic manufacturing costs” related to assembly, insertion, and testing. A 32GB iPhone 7 Plus costs $649 as a point of comparison.
However, the bill of materials does not factor in costs related to, among other things, research and development, software, licensing costs, and transportation. The accuracy of the component costs is also questionable. Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he has never seen a cost breakdown that is “anywhere close to being accurate,” adding that they are generally “much different than the reality.”
At least in comparison to IHS estimates for previous iPhones, the iPhone 7’s bill of materials is seemingly costlier than the iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5, each estimated to start at $200, and the iPhone SE at $160.

J&L 103 Sports Bluetooth Earbuds: Hands down the best wireless earbuds under $50 (review)

Remember this name J and L Real. If you follow my reviews, you would know that I have a major focus on mobile accessories, with a particular focus on audio products. I’ve loved music since I was a child, and even now I prefer listening to music over watching TV and movies. I went through an embarrassingly expensive audiophile phase five years ago where spending $1k on headphones became normal.
After years of testing hundreds of audio products, I have come back to earth and realized that level of audiophilia is unsustainable. The return on my investment dropped off at a certain level of audio quality and music. Since then I have learned to appreciate audio products based on value to sound ratio, and for the first time in many years I have come across a set that made my jaw drop – The J&L 103 Sports Bluetooth Earbuds.
Naturally when anyone makes a statement of that magnitude, it will make you skeptical. You would think I am being paid to say that, but I promise I was not paid one penny to say that. J and L Real even gave AndroidGuys.com readers an exclusive discount code (at the end of the post)where you can save $10 on the 103s and get them for $39.99. At $40 these headphones are without question the best wireless earbuds under $50, and quite frankly they are the best I have listened to under $200.
Let’s get into the review and I’ll explain how I got to this conclusion.
Build
The J&L 103 Sports Bluetooth Earbuds are wireless as the name implies, but are not truly wire free like the latest Apple Airpod or Samsung Gear IconX headphones. The 103s are a familiar design with two earpieces that are connected to each other by a single wire, with an inline remote control and microphone.

The two ear pieces are machined from an aluminum alloy and are sized to fit most ears. Some wireless earbuds can be quite large due to the internal hardware, but J&L managed to make the canisters quite small. More importantly, J&L made the ear tube that slides into your ear canal very small. I’ll explain why this is important.

It’s difficult to convey how small the inner ear tube is, so I measured them with digital calipers they measure exactly 4.9mm. If you want to know exactly how small that is, grab a ruler, and on the metric side count out the five little lines. That’s the portion of the earbud where the silicone tip slides over and ultimately creates the fit inside of your ear canal.
In my experience, wireless earbud manufacturers make the ports slightly larger to compensate for a lack in power. It allows more sound to escape because wireless earbuds are underpowered to increase battery life, but this ultimately sacrifices comfort. Earbuds that are uncomfortable ultimately end up being shelved by users. Having a small ear canal tube is probably the most important feature in getting the right fit and seal, and the J&L 103s are designed perfectly for just about all ear sizes.
Included in the box are soft silicone tips, in small, medium and large sizes. There’s also flanges that fit on the outer portion of the ear bud canister which make the headphones even more comfortable to wear. Some ear flanges can be a little too stiff when the ear canisters are heavy, but the 103s are the right flexibility due to the light weight of each ear piece. If you plan on using these while not working out, they are light enough to wear without the flanges.

Each ear piece also has a strong magnet built into them which gives them a tight fit around your neck when they are not in use.

Magnets may not seem like a big deal, but it’s actually a feature found in much more expensive earbuds. It’s also very nice to have as the headphones will fit snug around your neck ensuring you will not lose them.
The inline remote control houses the power button which also serves as the Bluetooth connect, play/pause and answer/end phone calls. The + button serves as fast forward and volume up, where the – button does the opposite. The inline remote is also where you will find the microphone for taking wireless calls.
Other specs:
- Bluetooth 4.1
- IPX5 Sweat proof rating
- CVC 6.0 Noise cancelling (for improved call clarity)
- HiFi Playback
- Playback time – 8 hours (80mAH)
- Charge time – 1-2 hours
- Overall size – 540 x 32 x 20mm
- .6 ounces
- 10mm driver
Overall J&L didn’t cut any corners on the build, and the 103s are as premium as you can get under $200, and certainly the best you can get under $50.
Sound
The 103s absolutely shine when it comes to audio playback. The 103s reproduce sound that is rich, warm, spacious, articulate, detailed but not overly analytical. As earbuds get overly analytical, they can be accurate but ultimately no fun. The 103s sound as if a team of engineers spent countless hours tuning the large 10mm drivers to pump out sound that matters to all genres of music.
That’s extremely difficult to do, especially in wireless headphones. Wireless headphones usually suffer from poor playback due to the lack of bandwidth Bluetooth provides, but it is clear the engineers got the most out of their ear buds. Most wireless earbuds jack up the low end because the general user loves their bass. Bass usually makes music more fun to listen to, especially when you can feel it. The downside to bass is it muddles the mids, and highs need to be dialed up for the user to get clarity. While that style of music can be fun to listen to, it’s not the best way to enjoy music.
While I typically listen to a wide range of music, I usually turn to Classical music when I love headphones/earbuds.
The detail in classical music is unmatched by other genres due to the wide range of instruments played by human beings. There’s nothing digital with Classical music, and having the ability to differentiate between instruments on earbuds is something I don’t find as often as I would like. The 103s master the Classical genre with beauty.
I also like to turn to Classic Rock like the Beatles to listen for the guitars, pianos and vocals. There’s a nostalgia when listening to Classic Rock too, as the sound equipment to record in that era was not as clean as it is today. Listening to the 103s with my eyes closed brings me back to a time when I fell in love with music.
Those feelings the 103s generate with the high level of sound quality are why I am in love with them.
From Daft Punk, to Taylor Swift, to Carrie Underwood, you will love your music on the 103s.
If you’re wondering about loudness, the 103s get painfully loud. There are some of you who really like to blast your music, and the 103s can get to painful levels. The abundance of power is what pushes the 10mm drivers to sound so incredibly balanced, spacious and rich.
I am truly impressed with the sound reproduction the J&L 103 wireless earbuds produce, and given the price, I have no doubt you would too.
Battery, Bluetooth and call quality

I mentioned earlier that the J&L 103 wireless earbuds are powerful. I never listened to them beyond 75%, and I frequently pulled in over seven hours of playback before needing a recharge. It was pretty consistent to get over seven hours of playback over several weeks of usage.
Bluetooth quality is also important when it comes to wireless headphones. The 103s did not drop signal one time, no matter which pocket I carried my phone in. There are countless wireless headphones that do not get this feature right, and can ruin the overall experience due to music dropping out.
Call quality is spot on too. Most budget wireless headphones make call quality and the microphone a “throw-in” feature. Those budget headphones would probably be better served to leave out the microphone since no one wants to repeat themselves over calls. I know it sound too good to be true, but I even use the 103s for business calls. While I use my mother to test out call quality, using the 103s for work calls is the true measure of acceptance as I will not have poor call quality when it comes to my job as a chemist.
Overall
When you consider the build, materials, battery life, Bluetooth connection, call quality, price and most importantly sound reproduction, the J&L 103s are what I would call perfection. That’s a bold statement for anyone to make, but I’ll stake my audiophile reputation on it.
I’ve fallen in love with the J&L 103 Sports Bluetooth earbuds and have no qualms recommending them to anyone who has $40 to spare. Don’t waste your money on any other wireless headphones until you give these a try.

Secret Life of Pets Unleashed is a chaotic reprisal of the classic match-3 (review)
Website screenshot
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of match-3 style games available in the Play Store. The themes to these games are easily malleable by developers, based on an icon style (fruit, candy, etc), a general theme (island, WWII, etc), or as a extension of the latest popular movie or TV show branding & marketing.
The newer of these offerings falls into the latter category,
Yep, 41 and playing this game. It’s what I do.
Secret Life of Pets Unleashed, offers up classic match-3 gameplay with the thematic branding of the recent hit kids’ movie. The game is plenty safe for young children, but can be played by all ages.
Setup
If you’re even remotely familiar with the match-3 style of game, this game won’t take any time at all to pick up and figure out.
First step is to pick up this free game from the Play Store (link here). After download and opening, you have the customary linking to Google Play Games. There are the usual (if limited) ‘settings’ available, such as music and sound effects on/off.
Gameplay
From here you’re directed right to clicking on the first level (there is no avatar, background, or other setup choices to make prior to beginning). As I stated earlier, in this game’s case the theme is to that of the movie “The Secret Life of Pets” (movie available for pre-order via this link), where the pieces are dog & cat toys, and the thinly-applied plot is for you to help the pet character of the given level to successfully wait at home for its owner, doing what it does best per the movie.
Again, it’s thinly applied at best, as most of this game style’s variants are. The core gameplay doesn’t change from most others you’ve played: you have to line up at least 3 of the same icon in a row (or sometimes in other shapes) to make them disappear. This drops all icons above down Tetris-style to fill the void. If you do well (or are lucky), these fall-in icons will align with others of the same look and you get a cascading, or domino effect of icon matches.
You can also gain ‘special’ icons through various efforts of a given level, such as lining up 4 or more (this gives you a special icon that will wipe out an entire row or column once adjoined with two other like icons).
I’ve played over a half-dozen levels, and while I can tell you there are more special icons and cascade effect out there, I honestly can’t tell you definitively what they are.
This is because the action in this game is so frenetic, so chaotic, that it is very difficult to track exactly what great thing has been bestowed upon you by the particular aligning of certain icons.
At some points you can only sit back and watch the chaos unfold as icons fly in from off-screen, while others up and fly away, while at some points almost the entire screen of icons is wiped, replace, and almost wiped again. At most times I didn’t feel that I had a very manual hand in clearing a given level; as stated, most times I have no idea how it got cleared to begin with!
What I Liked
- Good colors, not too garish.
- Easy to pick up and play on a whim.
- Good for young children.
What Could Use Improvement
- Gameplay input is “locked out” during lengthly animation sequences; interrupts flow of play.
- Almost too-simple gameplay, seems hard to fail.
- Cascade/domino effects are too frenetic, almost impossible to follow what is happening on-screen.
