Google’s next phones aren’t going to be cheap

Get ready to pay up big time if you want Google’s HTC-made 2016 phones.

Google is working with HTC on its next two phones, currently known as the Pixel and Pixel XL. They are set to debut this autumn. You can read more about these devices from here. The thing that distinguishes these devices from previous Google phones, such as the Huawei-made Nexus 6P and LG-made Nexus 5x, is that they will not be Nexus devices. They’ll sport the Pixel brand, and they might cost you an arm and a leg.

Google’s reference Android smartphones usually come with bargain price tags. The high-end Nexus 6P cost $499 when it was new, for instance. But according to Android Police, Google’s upcoming Pixel phones will start at $649, which is a price range usually reserved for devices like the iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7. The Pixel XL, which is thought to be the higher-spec’d of the two Pixel phones, will likely cost even more, too.

Android Police said pricing could change at any time, but apparently, Google is willing to charge more for its Pixel phones because it is considering directly offering customers financing options. Plus, the company’s Daydream View headset should be available alongside the new phones and will cost around $80. Again, it’s possible that price will change before launch as well.

Google is expected to launch all these devices on 4 October, though it has yet to invite the media to an event.

Here’s our first look at Panasonic’s video-centric GH5

Panasonic held it’s Photokina 2016 press conference today and finally spilled the beans on the 4K GH5, the successor to its popular GH4. The big news was 10-bit 4K capture at up to 60 fps, and even up to 6K — but only for short photo bursts. We also tried out Panasonic’s G85, a 4K mirrorless camera for videographers who may not want to splash out for the high-end GH4 or GH5. Finally, there’s the LX10, a formidable 4K compact camera that challenges Sony’s RX100 IV.

Yes, there’s a theme here — 4K video now defines Panasonic’s lineup from compact to mirrorless flagship.

We’re live all week from Cologne, Germany, for Photokina 2016. Click here to catch up on all the news from the show.

Next ‘GTA Online’ expansion will make a biker out of you

Motorcycle gangs aren’t exactly new ground for Grand Theft Auto, sure, but GTA Online will play host to the one percenters in the future. The refreshingly conservatively named “Bikers” expansion will add eight-player gangs, “a massive slate of new competitive and co-op gameplay,” new properties to buy and a bunch of new bikes, according to a post on Rockstar Newswire.

And what’s a biker gang without tattoos and colors? Rockstar promises those in addition to “high-level, high-risk vehicle based business ventures” as well. The only bit missing? A release window. But that probably isn’t far off. Meanwhile, you could always fire up the GTA IV expansion “The Lost and the Damned” to kill some time and see a digital Congressman’s flaccid phallus.

GoPro sets the standard for action cameras with the Hero5

Today was a busy day for GoPro. Along with revealing its much-anticipated first drone, known as the Karma, the company also introduced two new action cameras. Both the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session are a major upgrade over their predecessors, with voice control and native waterproofing chief among the standout features. But let’s start with the flagship Hero5 Black. It now comes with a 2-inch touchscreen, GPS and a sensor that takes up to 12-megapixel images. Like the Hero4, the Hero5 shoots 4K at 30 fps — raise your hand if you wish it handled 60 fps.

Meanwhile, with the Hero5 Session, you do lose the built-in display, GPS and RAW support. That said, you get a more compact design for $299, whereas the Black costs $399. And don’t worry, the Session also supports voice commands — like “GoPro, start recording” — and is waterproof without a housing to 33 feet (10 meters). Thankfully, the latest action cams are compatible with GoPro’s existing mounts, so you don’t have to worry about spending extra money.

Additionally, the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session come with electronic image stabilization, which should translate into smoother shots during your adventures. Going back to the voice control feature, there’s only going to be support for seven languages at launch, including English and Spanish, but GoPro says more will be added in the near future. And that’s good news, because that’s without a doubt one of the most exciting and convenient things you can do with the cameras.

To bring the ecosystem together, GoPro announced a subscription service that lets you automatically upload your pictures and videos to the cloud. GoPro Plus, as the service is called, isn’t free though. You’ll have to pay $5 per month, although you do get the first month free.

After checkin out the new Hero5 line at the launch event in Squaw Valley, California, we’re quite impressed so far. Not everything is perfect, however. The “professional-grade” electronic image stabilization on the Hero5 Session wasn’t the best quality — some of the footage we captured had a warped fisheye effect to it. Still, we won’t make any final judgements until we have more time to test the shooters properly, and for a longer period of time.

For now, you should be looking forward to the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session, because they appear to be GoPro’s best cameras to date. And don’t forget about the foldable Karma drone, which is set to arrive on October 23rd for $799.

Apple Joins Global Renewable Energy Initiative RE100

Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson today announced that Apple has joined global renewable energy initiative RE100, a campaign that’s dedicated to getting the world’s most influential companies committed to 100 percent renewable power.

Jackson shared the news at Climate Week in New York City, where she also shared some details on Apple’s recent environmental progress. In 2015, 93 percent of Apple’s worldwide operations were powered with renewable energy, and in the U.S., China, and 21 other countries, Apple uses renewable energy for 100 percent of its operations.

According to Jackson, Apple just completed work on its 50-megawatt solar farm in Arizona, which will power Apple’s global data command center in Mesa, Arizona, the former location of Apple sapphire partner GT Advanced.

Jackson also gave an update on Apple’s commitment to helping its suppliers use renewable energy, announcing that Apple supplier Solvay Specialty Polymers, which makes the antenna bands used in the iPhone, has pledged to use 100 percent renewable energy for all Apple production.

Catcher Technology, a supplier that provides aluminum enclosures for iOS and Mac devices, is also aiming to reach 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2018.

“Apple is committed to running on 100 percent renewable energy, and we’re happy to stand beside other companies that are working toward the same effort,” said Jackson. “We’re excited to share the industry-leading work we’ve been doing to drive renewable energy into the manufacturing supply chain, and look forward to partnering with RE100 to advocate for clean-energy policies around the world.”

Other major companies who are members of RE100 include IKEA, Adobe, BMW, Coca Cola, GM, Google, HP, Microsoft, Nike, Philips, Starbucks, and Walmart.

Apple Preparing Fix for Glitch Causing Lightning EarPods Remote to Stop Working

Apple is working on a fix for an issue that can cause the new Lightning EarPods designed for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to stop working properly, the company said in a statement given to Business Insider.

When using the EarPods, there’s an occasional bug that can cause the remote portion of the accessory to become unresponsive. While audio will continue to play, the remote does not work, so there’s no way to control the volume, access Siri, or answer a phone call.

The glitch doesn’t happen every time. It’s seemingly intermittent and random. (I thought I was going crazy until I saw some people with similar issues complaining on Twitter.) If you experience the problem, you can just unplug your EarPods and plug them in again to temporarily fix it.

An Apple spokesperson told me the problem will be fixed in a future software update.

Apple plans to issue a fix in an upcoming software update, but there’s no word on when it might be released. Business Insider is not sure if third-party Lightning-based headphones are affected, but there have been reports of similar bugs with the Lightning adapter. Some headphones, such as Beats headphones with a 3.5mm connector, appear to have a non-functional remote when plugged into an iPhone with the Lightning adapter.

Because the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus do not have a headphone jack, Apple shipped the devices with a set of EarPods that feature a Lightning connector instead of a 3.5mm headphone jack. The EarPods plug into the Lightning port, making it more difficult to charge and listen to music at the same time. Apple has also included a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter for customers who want to use their own headphones.

Sony-FES-Watch-U Release Date, Price and Specs – CNET

download.jpg

Sony

The FES Watch U is Fashion Entertainment’s second-generation e-paper watch, coming a year after the first made a splash in crowdfunding circles, albeit backed by Sony.

As a timepiece, the first FES Watch was an attention grabber, thanks to its unique E-Ink strap that could be changed with the tap of a button, and 24 E-Ink watch face variations.

It was a simple affair, however, with just the e-paper design and timekeeping. The upcoming FES Watch U adds new features and a sturdy makeover — and aims to compete with increasingly stylish smartwatches such as Michael Kors’ Access and Samsung’s Gear S3.

The FES Watch U adds digital modes to its face, along with multiple calendars. As most of the watch is made from e-paper, the calendars and even the clocks themselves now smartly extend beyond the metal bezel to display dates and time around the strap.

The new watch also supports wireless battery charging through its watch stand, eliminating the need for battery changes.

Perhaps the most sought-after feature was the ability to add custom designs to the displays themselves. With the FES Watch U, you can download designs from a dedicated phone app, adding to the 24 designs carried over from the first watch. You can also use your phone to take pictures and convert them into patterns, making any texture or image fair game. From there, you can share your unique designs with the FES online community.

The new version of the FES Watch is also much sturdier, with glass facing and stainless steel casing. The watch also comes in three flavours: silver, white and a premium black, which has additional sapphire glass with anti-reflection coating and titanium ion-plating for high scratch resistance.

The FES Watch U is still seeking crowdfunding, with over 15 million of its 20 million yen ($195,000) target already raised. It has until 7 October to reach its goal.

No pricing has been set for the new watches, and there’s no word on whether or not the device will officially go on sale outside of Japan. If you wish to take part in the funding process to make sure the FES Watch U gets made, you can find it on the First Flight website, though note our usual caveat below. Funding options start at 44,710 yen, which converts to around $440, £335 or AU$580.

Editor’s note: CNET’s reporting on crowdfunding campaigns is not an endorsement of the project or its creators. Contributing to a crowdfunded project comes with risk. Before contributing to any campaign, read the crowdfunding site’s policies, such as those for Kickstarter and Indiegogo, to learn more about your rights (and refund policies, or the lack thereof) before and after a campaign ends.

Fujifilm GFX series Release Date, Price and Specs – CNET

gfxfront63mm-evf.jpg Fujifilm

The world was expecting a full-frame mirrorless camera from Fujifilm at Photokina 2016; the company surprised us with a medium-format instead. Hasselblad was first with a mirrorless interchangeable-lens medium-format, the X1D-50c, but the Fujifilm GFX 50S looks a lot more affordable: the company didn’t provide actual price or availability, but did say it would ship in early 2017 and cost less than $10,000 for the body and a lens.

I haven’t gotten full specs yet, but It has the same sensor specifications as the X1D-50c — 50 megapixels, 43.8 x 32.9mm 4:3 at a 5.3 micron pixel pitch — and it was designed by Fujifilm. Unlike Hasselblad, which puts the shutter in the lenses, Fujifilm puts a focal-plane shutter with a maximum speed of 1/4,000 second in the body. It’s dust and weather sealed and can crop to a variety of medium-format aspect ratios.

It will come with an electronic viewfinder that attaches in the hot shoe, and there’ll be an optional multiangle adapter to use with it.

Of course, it’s going to need lenses, and Fujifilm has introduced a new mount, G. The company says the lenses are designed to resolve to resolutions higher than 100 megapixels, and offers the usual claims of sharpness thoughout the aperture range, no diffraction and no distortion. The first models will be the GF63mmF2.8 R WR, GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR, GF120mmF4 Macro R LM OIS WR in early 2017, followed by the GF110mmF2 R LM WR, GF23mmF4 R LM WR and GF45mmF2.8 R WR. (To get the 35mm-equivalent focal length for reference, multiply the lengths by 0.77.)

GoPro Karma Release Date, Price and Specs – CNET

GoPro just proved that there’s still room for something fresh in consumer camera drones.

After being teased for months, the company finally unveiled the Karma, its first drone designed for its cameras, but simplified for novice drone pilots.

Take the Karma’s controllers, for example. Many camera drones come with controllers loaded with switches, buttons and knobs. Sure, some are friendlier to use than others, but the Karma’s remote has the familiar feel of a gaming controller. On top of that, you don’t need to tie up your smartphone or drag along a tablet to get a view from the attached GoPro: The controller has a flip-up touchscreen.

The Karma’s small, too. Like fold-it-up-and-stick-it-in-a-regular-backpack small. In fact, it even comes with the backpack. And of course it’s made to work with the new Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session cameras, but will also work with Hero4 cameras. So you’re not stuck with a camera that’s permanently attached to a drone, you’re getting a camera you can use on its own or in the drone.

Perhaps its greatest asset is the three-axis camera stabilizer on the drone. Not only will it keep your video looking smooth in the air, but it can be removed and attached to the included Karma Grip. GoPro says the grip can then be used handheld, perfect for running, riding, skating, etc. alongside your friends, or mounted on other gear.

27518596karmacontroller45openmaster.jpg

The controller has a built-in LCD screen and is designed for ease of use.

GoPro

For years now camera makers big and small have been trying to one up GoPro in a category it basically created. Now it’s GoPro entering a category with a clear leader in DJI. GoPro already has wide brand recognition, though — something DJI’s competitors and DJI too, for that matter, can’t really claim.

Combine that brand recognition with the flexibility of using the Karma in the air and on the ground and its potential ease of use, and the Karma might be a spoiler this holiday season.

Karma arrives on October 23 for $799 without a camera, $999 with a Hero5 Session and $1,099 with the Hero5 Black.

Stay tuned for our full review.
