Samsung highlights iris-scanning tech in new Galaxy Note 7
Drag

The Galaxy Note 7 was made official this morning, introducing an iris scanner, curved edges (a la Galaxy S7 Edge) and Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 5. It also comes with water and dust resistance, a bigger battery and a brand-new color called Coral Blue.

One of the Galaxy Note’s defining features, the S Pen, has been updated as well. It’s more sensitive and accurate, water resistant, doesn’t get stuck if you insert it the wrong way, and it can even make GIFs.

All these features come at a premium, however. The full retail price of the Galaxy Note 7 is a staggering $849.99, making it one of the most expensive phones on the market today. That said, retailers and wireless providers across the board have a host of preorder deals which can help temper the price.

Here’s how to reserve yours.

Google to sprinkle quick-loading AMP pages throughout mobile search results

Google will soon offer Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) as part of its larger set of search results in Chrome and other mobile browsers. While these pages have previously surfaced in the Top Stories section of mobile searches, the company will soon be mixing them in with standard results.

amp-french-toast-moto-x-pure-hero.jpg?it

From Google:

To clarify, this is not a ranking change for sites. As a result of the growth of AMP beyond publishers, we wanted to make it easier for people to access this faster experience. The preview shows an experience where web results that that have AMP versions are labeled with AMP. When you tap on these results, you will be directed to the corresponding AMP page within the AMP viewer.

You can actually try out AMP links in search results for yourself right now. Google’s set up a handy demo for mobile browsers, which let you see AMP results together with standard search results.

Google says that it’s started this preview in order to gather feedback from developers and regular users, along with websites so that the experience can be improved over time. The company is not giving a rollout timeline for AMP search results at the moment.

The Galaxy Note 7 can make GIFs out of just about anything

note-7-gifs.jpg?itok=xanU4QmC

The Note 7 isn’t a smartphone. It’s an $800 GIF machine.

However you pronounce it, you can’t avoid GIFs on the Internet. But as universal as they’ve become, making them is still hard — unless you own a Galaxy Note 7. Yes, buying a Note 7 will surely make your wallet significantly lighter, but at least you’ll be able to turn just about anything into a GIF, ready to fire out at admiring followers on your social network of choice.

Note 7 GIF recorder

Getting there is simple — pull out the Note 7’s S Pen, hit “Smart Select,” then tap the “Animation.” You’ll then see a grid outline which you can align over the thing you want to record — for example, a YouTube video (DRM-protected videos won’t work, we’re told). Then tweak the recording quality if you like, and tap “record.” Once you’re done, stop recording and it’s saved to your gallery. From there it can be trimmed further, even allowing you to cut out specific frames if needed.

Whether you need a $800+ smartphone to help you make GIFs on the go is debatable — as is whether you really need an S Pen for a feature like this. (Surely a finger would work just as well?)

But hey. GIFs!

Where to buy the Galaxy Note 7 in the U.S.

galaxy-note-7-46.jpg?itok=BS2pPhvZ

The Galaxy Note 7 is here, and it can be yours from the major U.S. carriers.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the Galaxy Note 7’s going on sale from the major carriers in the U.S. — with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular all getting in on the game. You get the same phone from all of the carriers, leaving your decision up to how the network will work for you, and what incentives it can offer with the purchase.

Here’s a breakdown of all the details for buying the Galaxy Note 7 from the major U.S. carriers.

Where to buy the Note 7 in the U.S.

AT&T

AT&T has announced that pre-orders of the Galaxy Note 7 will be available starting on August 3, with full availability on August 19. As for pricing, you’ve got a few options: 30 payments of $29.34 using AT&T Next or 24 payments of $36.67 for AT&T Next Every Year.

In addition, AT&T will be offering a few other promotions with the Galaxy Note 7:

  • Buy one Galaxy Note 7 and get a $695 in monthly AT&T Next credits to purchase a second
  • Buy a Galaxy Note 7 and get a free Samsung Gear S2 with 2-year agreement
  • Buy a Galaxy Note 7 and get a Galaxy Tab E for $0.99

See at AT&T

T-Mobile

T-Mobile is offering the Note 7 for $69.99 down and $32.50 for 24 months — or a total of $849.99 — starting August 3. In-store availability commences August 19.

For a limited time, you’ll be able to have your choice of a gift with purchase:

  • A Gear Fit 2
  • One-year Netflix subscription
  • 256GB SD card

See at T-Mobile

Verizon

Verizon will begin accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 7 on August 3, and it will arrive in stores on August 19. The carrier has not yet announced its pricing, but for a limited time you’ll be able to grab the following free accessories:

  • A Gear Fit 2
  • 256GB microSD card

See at Verizon

U.S. Cellular

U.S. Cellular has announced that it will begin accepting pre-orders on August 4, with it becoming available in-store on August 19. The carrier will offer 20, 24 or 30 month payments, with payments as low as $27.80 per month. Those who opt for the 20 month plan will be able to upgrade in 12 months.

Once again, not to be left out, U.S. Cellular is also offering the same free accessory deals:

  • A Gear Fit 2
  • 256GB microSD card

Unlocked

At this time, Samsung hasn’t announced any plans to sell a U.S. unlocked model of the Galaxy Note 7 in the same way that it currently does with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Looking back at previous phone launches we’d expect it to take a few months for an unlocked model to arrive, so up until that point you’re going to have to either purchase from a carrier, or buy an international model and import it to the U.S.

Google’s speeding up mobile web search results for all sites

The time you spend waiting for mobile search results to load is about to drop drastically. Google announced on Tuesday that it is expanding the scope of its Accelerated Mobile Pages program to include non-publishing websites.

Google initially debuted AMP back in February. The program grew out of a collaboration between the company and various online publishing partners (Engadget’s parent company, AOL, included) intended to hasten their site’s load times. Sites that made their content AMP-compatible saw load times drop by 400 percent and use a tenth of the data as conventional websites — even if the page contained bandwidth-hungry video and images. What’s more, AMP-enabled pages are highlighted in the Top Stories carousel, putting them above the standard list of results.

To date, Google’s cached more than 150 million URLs from 650,000 domains for the AMP project. The original AMP rollout was so well-received, in fact, that a number of non-publishing sites like Fandango, Disney, Food Network and eBay began integrating the technology. And soon, though Google remains mum on the exact date, those sites (and any other that use AMP) will begin seeing faster load times. They will not, however, show up any higher in the result rankings — there will reportedly be no change in Google’s search algorithm.

23andMe data helps find genetic factors behind depression

Genetic samples from 23andMe users have contributed to scientific discoveries before, but never quite like this. Researchers have used gene samples from 307,354 23andMe customers to identify 32 genetic factors (15 genetic loci and 17 nucleotide polymorphisms) linked to major depressive disorder among people of European descent — the largest-ever study of its type. The data hints that genes responsible for developing neurons may correspond to those triggering this form of depression, and that the genetic areas associated with depression may play a part in other mental disorders, such as schizophrenia.

This isn’t about to usher in a cure or treatment. Scientists haven’t yet found a way to turn genetic findings around mental illness into practical solutions. It could get the ball rolling, however, and will at least help explain how major depressive disorder works. And as 23andMe is more than a little eager to point out, it’s a testament to how large-scale, customer-submitted genomic data can lead to answers that might be difficult to obtain through conventional studies.

Snapchat is developing scannable ads

Snapchat users could soon be scanning more than each other’s snapcodes. The company is reportedly working on scannable ads that would unlock sponsored content within the app. Like QR codes before them, these machine-readable advertisements can be integrated into stuff like product packaging or movie posters. Upon being scanned, the ads will grant users access to item discounts, sponsored content, and other goodies, while presumably providing Snapchat and its partners valuable marketing data about its users’ interests. According to The Information’s pair of unnamed sources, these ads should start rolling out sometime this fall.

Windows 10’s Anniversary Update arrives

After a few months of hype, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is here… well, mostly. Microsoft has started rolling out the upgrade to desktop users, who’ll automatically receive it stages with “newer machines” getting it first. You can update manually if you just can’t stand sitting behind the curve. However long you wait, your PC will get more pervasive Cortana voice commands (such as controlling some apps), deeper pen input (including a dedicated pen interface) and a spruced-up Edge browser with extensions.

If you’re hoping to update your Windows 10 phone… well, you’ll have to be patient. The Redmond crew will only say that the Anniversary Update hits smartphones in the “coming weeks.” Not that there’s as much of a rush in the first place. While the Windows 10 Mobile release gets some desktop features (such as cross-platform Cortana syncing) as well as interface tweaks (like more active Live Tiles and swipe-based browser navigation), it’s not the star of the show this time around.

Rithmio Edge tracks weightlifting sessions with Android Wear

We’ve seen a number of wearable devices that track your weightlifting sessions at the gym, but Rithmio has a new app that does so with a device you may already own. The Rithmio Edge app works with Android Wear smartwatches to keep tabs on your workout, tracking both exercises and reps using the company’s gesture recognition technology. The app learns your movements as you go so it can log the different exercises you fancy during those lifting routines. It also tracks reps and sets so you’ll not exactly where you stand when it comes time to analyze progress.

At the end of each session, the Rithmio Edge app offers a summary of the muscle groups you worked, how long you were active and an overview of the workout. It also keeps track of stats on the exercise level, so you can easily keep an eye on personal goals. All of that sounds great, but the software has to be able to distinguish between exercises in order to be really useful. Rithmio says over the course of five years it developed the software that runs Edge, fine-tuning it to tell the difference between similar movements. It can discern when you’re doing a bicep curl and when you opt for a hammer curl, for example. We look forward to putting it to the test.

Weightlifting trackers have been around for a while now, but most of what we’ve seen has been a dedicated wearable just for your time at the gym. Whether it’s the Push band, Gymwatch, Atlas Wristband or Beast Sensor, the options are many if you don’t mind taking a separate gadget with you. If you already own an Android Wear smartwatch, Edge offers a more convenient method for tracking activity that doesn’t require one more thing to keep up with.

Rithmio has more features in the works for the Edge app, too. Eventually, the goal is to allow users to build their workout plan inside the app as well as enhancing post-workout analysis and tracking more exercises. If there’s a movement that the software doesn’t recognize right now, you can log those manually. Again, you’ll need an Android Wear smartwatch to give it a shot, but you can grab the free companion app from Google Play now.
