Pokemon Go websites, apps for finding Pokestops, rares, gyms and more – CNET

If you want to take your Pokemon Go gaming to the next level there are maps, apps and websites that can help. While some may consider using these extras cheating, they can help you find Pokemon faster, uncover the best PokeStops and more to help you become the PokeMaster you long to be without all the guesswork.

Sites for finding Pokemon, maps and gyms

Walking around looking for Pokemon can take a lot of time. You’ll also need supplies and a little exercise for your Pokemon, so stops and gyms are essential. No need to wander, though. Other players have probably already mapped your town and shared where to find it all.

PokeVision is an online map that shows you where all the Pokemon in your area are in real time. How does it do it? The site connects directly to Pokemon Go servers to get accurate information. While this is great, the site has been having some server issues, so you may not get to use it as much as you would like.

When it is working, the map only lets you scan your area every 30 seconds. So be patient. It isn’t a glitch, it’s just the way the site was made.

Pokecrew finds Pokemon in your area and displays them in a list form. You can also add your own real-life sightings to the list so locals can share the latest information. The best thing about Pokecrew is that it offers information about each Pokemon in your area, such as its Pokedex number and type.

Pokefind another list, but it has some extra features. You can sort the Pokemon by type, for instance. There is also an evolution calculator you can use to determine how much CP (combat power) your Pokemon will have after it’s evolved.

Pokemapper is a crowdsourced Pokemon-finding map created by OpenRide, a ridesharing service like Uber. The map has been populated by people all over the world.

The great thing about a crowdsourced map is that it doesn’t have the tendency to crash or stall. The downside is that if you live in a small town, chances are there won’t be many Pokemon on the map.

Mapokemon is a crowdsourced map that has the location of gyms and stops all over the world. Each reported pin on the map can be rated as real or fake by others, making the map more accurate. Each pin in the map is also tagged with the poster’s IP address to prevent spamming.

Apps for Pokemon Go

There are many apps that can help you with your searches and bring you together with other players without keeping tabs open in your browser.

Some apps that help you find Pokemon, gyms and PokeStops through user-generated reports are Pokemon Go Maps for iOS and Map for Pokemon Go: PokemonMap Android. Poke Radar, Pokemap: Find Your GO Pokemons for Android and Poke Map are also user-generated apps, but they are just for finding Pokemon.

Don’t go it alone. Go!Chat and RazorGo are apps that help you find other Pokemon players and lets them chat about good Pokemon locations, meet-ups and more.

GO Helper for Pokémon Go is for making your gym battles more successful. The app helps you learn about the Pokemon you are about to battle and what Pokemon use against it to get effective hits.

PokeType – Dex is a little more in-depth and basically teaches you everything you need to know about Pokemon before you battle. You can look up Pokemon and find out their types, strengths, resistances and attacks. You can also build teams and upload your teams to the cloud.

If you’re the kind that’s a little hard on your Honor 5X, your case needs to take extra care for you. The DWay Armor Design offers protection in six color varieties.

The dual-layer case will cradle your phone in spite of drops and bumps. The textured back and soft side bumpers give your Honor 5X a more rugged feel and look. If that’s not enough, there’s a built-in kickstand for hands-free viewing.

Not the flashy type? The case for your Honor 5X doesn’t have to be an attention grabber. The four subtle colors of the TUDIA Ultra Slim case complement your phone without drawing attention to the device.

The TPU rubberized silicone case is soft, durable, and protective. Raised edges protect the screen from unfortunate encounters with hard surfaces, and the case gives you full access to all the phone’s buttons and functions.

For a classic look that’s a perfect match for the Honor 5X, get your hands on the TUDIA Ultra Slim Full-Matte Arch case.

You’re not stuck with only colorful cases to choose from; a clear case will show off the original hardware that makes the Honor 5X look so good. We like the Liquid Crystal case from Spigen.

The clear TPU case won’t discolor over time, and you won’t have to worry about smudges of fingerprints, either. A raised lip around the screen and camera cutout keep both sensitive areas protected from bumps, and the covered buttons keep their full functionality.

If you want to show off your Honor 5X the way it was intended to be seen, the Spigen Liquid Crystal Ultra-Thin case should be yours, all yours.

Lwang Slim Fit Hybrid case

Simple and straightforward, the second Lwang case on our list is the Slim Fit Hybrid, and its three color variations and reasonable price mean you could get one for each mood or outfit. Just sayin’.

The hard PC and flexible TPU combination add a nice grip to the slender Honor 5X, and the textured back surface prevents your phone from slipping off of smooth surfaces. There are precise cutouts for all the ports, buttons, and, of course, the camera lens.

Bonus feature: there are built-in air cushions in all four corners for a little extra drop protection. Sounds like a great deal to us.

LK shock absorption hybrid case

Let’s say you like the look of Otterbox cases and you’ve been looking for that style to fit your Honor 5X. Look no further; we found a great plastic and silicone combination with the LK shock absorption hybrid case.

The soft bumper and anti-slip finish make it easy to keep a handle on your phone. The case is easy to snap on and off, and it’s a snug fit. It’s lightweight and gives you access to all the ports and buttons on your Honor 5X.

The six color combinations stand out and make your Honor 5X easy to find, and it’s easy to see why the LK shock absorption hybrid case makes our list.

The internet’s Ice Bucket Challenge funded a medical discovery

Internet sensations can do more than just trigger fond memories or confusion… sometimes, they might just lead to a vital cure. Some of the $100 million-plus in donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge (the viral video-fueled awareness campaign for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease) fully funded Project MinE, a medical research effort that just identified a gene linked with some ALS cases. Yes, that clip you shared with your Facebook friends may have given scientists the cash they needed to finish their work — in this case, sequencing the genomes of 15,000 people with ALS to help pinpoint relevant genes.

It’s important not to oversell the impact of the Ice Bucket Challenge. Some of those donations came from ALS Association state chapters, for one thing. Moreover, there was a real concern that the original awareness message got lost in the shuffle. While there’s no question that the fundraising was wildly successful, there were likely some who didn’t realize that it was connected to ALS at all — the internet’s tendency to dilute information might have worked against the campaign. On the balance, though, the discovery stands as proof that the buzz created by social networks can accomplish great things.

Samsung’s mobile division is the company’s top earner

Samsung’s operating profits really did reach 8.14 trillion won ($7.2) like it expected, marking the second quarter of 2016 as its strongest in two years. The Korean corporation has released its detailed earnings report for Q2, where it also revealed a 50.94 trillion KRW ($45 billion) revenue, up by 2.40 trillion from same period last year. Samsung credits its increase in earnings to the strong sales of both the Samsung S7 and S7 edge, as well as to its profitable mid- to low-end models, including the Galaxy A and J series. According to Strategy Analytics, the company shipped 78 million smartphones this quarter.

In fact, the chaebol’s mobile division remains its top earner for two quarters straight — it notched an operating profit of 4.32 trillion KRW ($3.8 billion), more than double from the same period in 2015. Samsung says it expects to maintain its high-end smartphone sales the second half of 2016 with the release of a “new large-screen flagship smartphone.” The company is, of course, talking about its next Galaxy Note, which it’s slated to unveil on August 2nd in NYC.

Apple has finally sold its billionth iPhone

Apple has managed to pull in some extremely impressive numbers when it comes to its flagship mobile phone. While iPhone sales overall had begun to decline over the last quarter, that didn’t stop the company from selling its one billionth iPhone last week.

Apple’s CEO announced the milestone today during a special employee meeting in Cupertino this morning. Tim Cook, Apple CEO, thanked employees for “helping change the world every day,” noting that Apple has “always set out to make the best products that make a difference.”

The billionth iPhone was sold about two years after Apple sold its 500 millionth iPhone. That’s a lot of units, and with the impending launch of additional phones to its line, it’s likely to sell a whole lot more in the future.

Google Play Family Library launches: What is it and how does it work?

Google is taking a page from Apple’s playbook.

Apple launched a Family Sharing plan for iTunes and the App Store about two years ago, and now Google is doing the same thing with a new plan option called Google Play Family Library. It basically lets up to six different accounts in the same family group share content – such as movies, TV shows, books, and apps – across multiple devices, and it provides the option to pay for that content with a single credit card on the main account.

Here’s everything you need to know about Google Play Family Library, including what it is and how it works.

  • Google Nexus Watch: What’s the story so far?
  • Google’s Family Library will let you share account
  • Are these Google’s upcoming Android Wear smartwatches?

What is Google Play Family Library?

Google Play Family Library is for families with up to six members. It’s a way for those family members to share purchases from Google Play Store. So, when you buy an app, game, movie, TV show, or book in the Play Store, you can now share it with your family, across devices. In other words, you can buy a paid app, and then six other people can use it on their preferred devices without having to pay for the app again.

How does Google Play Family Library work?

Open the Play Store app to get started. From there, in the top left, tap Menu Menu > Account Family > Sign up for Family Library. You should then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Family Library.

Add family members

To add family members to your family group, open the Play Store app and tap Menu > Account > Family > Manage family members > Invite family members. Then, type the email address or phone number of the person you want to invite. As the family manager, you can add or remove people from your family group. You’ll also get an email when someone joins your family.

Join a family group

If someone has signed up for Family Library plan and invited you, you’ll get an email or text with your invitation. Follow the instructions in the invitation to join the family group. When you join, you can share purchases with anyone in your family and use the family payment method.

Set up a family payment method

When the family manager signs up for Google Play Family Library plan, they can add a family payment method that family members can use to make purchases on Google Play or in-app purchases. The family manager will get an email receipt each time a family member makes a purchase and can turn on purchase approval settings for family members. Google’s support page details how to set up your family payment method.

Individual family members can choose to pay with their own card if they like. They can also choose whether or not to share certain content; there’s an on/off toggle for sharing each individual piece of content.

Which devices work with Google Play Family Library?

All purchases added to Family Library are available across Android devices, iOS devices, and the web. This makes it very different from Apple’s Family Sharing plan, as your Google Play content is viewable on more types of devices. Movies and TV shows bought in Google Play will not only work on Android devices, ChromeOS devices, and the web, but also iOS devices like the iPhone or iPad.

How much does Google Play Family Library cost?

Google Play Family Library is free to sign up for and use.

Where is Google Play Family Library available?

Google will begin rolling out Google Play Family Library on 27 July in the US. It’ll also be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and the UK.

Does it replace Google Play Music Family Plan?

No. Google Play Family Library works for every other type of content except for music. The plan is similar to but not the same thing as Google Play Music Family Plan, which launched last year and lets up to six family members stream millions of songs on demand for $14.99 a month.

Want to know more?

Check out Google’s blog post and Google Play Family Library support hub for more information.

Facebook nears 2 billion monthly active users

Facebook has posted its second quarter earnings for investors – and the most interesting tidbits concern user numbers.

We won’t bore you with all the financial details (though Facebook did report $6.44 billion in revenue and $2.05 billion in profit, a 59 per cent revenue increase from the same period last year). The social media giant has announced that monthly active users hit 1.71 billion during the 90-day period that ended in June. That’s up from 1.65 million, its last reported number. It’s also a 15 per cent increase from the year-ago quarter.

At this rate, Facebook should hit 2 billion monthly active users by the end of 2017. Facebook also said it has more than 1 billion daily active users on mobile, which is where 84 percent of its revenue is generated. But that’s not all: both Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp have topped a billion monthly users for the first time. Meanwhile, Instagram has more than 500 million monthly users.

Facebook’s stock is trading higher after it posted these results. That’s likely because Facebook pushed ahead on mobile adverts and user growth, and it surpassed Wall Street’s expectations for the second quarter. Stock rose $8.01, or 6.5 percent, to $131.35 in after-hours trading.

Twitch now makes highlight clips on any channel

Twitch has so far been limiting its Clips sharing feature to partnered channels, but no longer: as of now, you can create those bite-sized highlights on any channel. If a friend pulls off a slick move during a live stream, you can share it just as easily as you would the footage from a big tournament. As before, you don’t need exceptional timing. A Clip will capture the 25 seconds before you hit the button to start, and 5 seconds after. While that won’t cover every situation, it’ll be enough to preserve a game-winning moment… and the cheering that follows.

Lastpass addresses two major vulnerabilities found by users

Bad news, LastPass users: bug bounty hunters found two major security exploits with the password manager’s browser extensions. Good news? Both of them have already been patched. In a quick update to the company blog, LastPass commented on a pair of separate, unrelated bugs that opened its browser extension to attacks exploitable by phishing.

Specifically, the post talks about an exploit found by security researcher Mathias Karlsson, who found a URL parsing bug that could be used to trick LastPass into spitting out passwords for specific sites. A user might click on Karlsson’s spoof URL, thinking they were visiting Twitter, only to have the malicious page steal their passwords and quietly pass them on to the real social network without their knowledge. It would be scary stuff if LastPass didn’t patch the exploit over a year ago.

Karlsson says LastPass patched his exploit in less than a day and handed him a $1,000 bounty for his trouble. That’s fairly typical, actually: just yesterday, Google Security Team researcher Travis Ormandy found another LastPass exploit that could affect its Firefox extension — today, it’s already been fixed. While these incidents show that LastPass isn’t perfect, its team is dedicated to fixing bugs as soon as it hears about them. Even so, the company recommends that its users play it safe: don’t click links from people you don’t know, use different passwords on all of your online accounts and use two-factor identification whenever possible. All good advice.

‘Life is Strange’ is getting its own digital series

The massively popular adventure game Life is Strange is getting its very own digital series, care of the minds behind Legendary Digital Studios and Square Enix.

Life is Strange was originally released as an episodic adventure from Dontnod and Square Enix, following teenager Max Caulfield as she found herself wrestling with newfound time traveling powers. While investigating the disappearance of student Rachel Amber, Chloe uncovers some truths about herself as well as friendship, loyalty and self-identity.

The project, of which there are very scant details for just yet, will be developed and produced with Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons of dj2 Entertainment. Cory Lanier and Greg Siegel, senior VP of development and production for Legendary Digital Studios.

It’s unclear just yet whether the digital series will simply follow the events of the games or if they’ll explore a new venue entirely. Whatever the case ends up being, hopefully some of the cringe-worthy writing will be changed up a bit for the series incarnation. It had a solid story, but now it needs to clean up its awkward dialogue, and it can make an excellent sci-fi adventure as a series in addition to episodic games.
