Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition Release Date, Price and Specs – CNET

If Olympic fever is upon you, then pay close attention. Samsung is selling its splashily colorful, Games-inspired phone starting July 18 for a sum we still don’t know. It’s a bummer not to have a price yet to pair with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition, as it’s laboriously known, but at least we’ve now had a chance to see the phone in the flesh.

A variation on the Galaxy S7 Edge, this special-edition handset just happens to be the same one Samsung (as an official Olympics partner) is giving to all 12,500 or so athletes. But the company is whipping up excitement by also making 2,000 of these handsets available in select countries, like the US, Brazil, Germany and South Korea.

Samsung’s Olympics phone goes for gold: Check…

What you get is simple, but fun. Tiny statements of color dress up the black phone and correspond to colors on those iconic Olympic rings — you get blue on the back, a red power button, green volume rocker, and yellow-gold front. Inside, a software theme surprises with lots of green, gold, blue and red tones on common screens (but not for third-party apps.) You’ll also see a small echo of white rings on the lock screen, which you can display on the home screen if you apply some optional wallpaper. Other than all that, the Olympic edition is the same as the regular S7 Edge, hardware composition and all.

The jazzed-up phone comes in a sporty case with thick, sturdy zippers. You’ll find headphones, a SIM card tool and the charger inside, but no surprising goodies like a case or VR games (the phone works with Samsung Gear VR) That’s fine with me, but part of me always hopes for unexpected extras. We don’t know what Samsung will charge, but if the phone winds up costing more for a few color accents, you’d be better off with a regular S7 or S7 Edge.

If you’re itching for an even moodier take on the S7 Edge, check out Samsung’s other summer spinoff, the one I like to refer to as…the Batphone.

In the US, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition sells exclusively through Best Buy.

Trianium Atomic S Battery Case for iPhone 6/6S review – CNET

The Good The inexpensive Trianium Atomic S Battery Case has a simple, unfussy design and charges your iPhone in a relatively short time.

The Bad The large opening in the back of the case is no deal breaker, but it does look jarring.

The Bottom Line Affordable and well designed, the Trianium Atomic S Battery Case is the top iPhone battery case for its price range.

With its built-in 3,100mAh battery and hard, matte exterior, Trianium’s Atomic S Battery Case conveniently charges your iPhone 6 (or 6S) and shields it from everyday bumps and drops. Retailing for $79.95 (or about £60 and AU$105 converted), it falls right in the center of the price spectrum — between Mophie’s $120 Juice Pack Plus (or £110 and AU$170 converted) and Anker’s $40 Ultra Slim Battery Case (or £30 and AU$55 converted).

However, though its price is middle-of-the-pack, its performance isn’t. For instance, it took about 2 hours on average for the case to fully charge the iPhone. This is about the time you’d expect for a full charge. Mophie’s Juice Pack Plus clocked in about 2 hours too, while the Incipio Offgrid Express (another $80 battery case) took notably longer at 2 hours and 35 minutes.

In addition, when you charge the phone, the case’s indicator lights located on the back eventually blink off while charging (you can still tell it’s juicing your phone though by the lightning bolt battery indicator on the handset’s display). This is better-designed than Anker’s case, which has lights that stay on the whole time while charging, which can be a nuisance in a dim room.

The accessory comes in two parts: the main battery exterior and a bumper that covers the edges of the handset and snaps into the case. Compared with Incipio’s case, which had the same design structure, I had an easier time snapping on and securing this one.

15 Finder shortcuts every Mac user needs to know – CNET

finder.jpg
Matt Elliott/CNET

Whether you are using OS X El Capitan or MacOS Sierra, these shortcuts will make you faster at finding things with Finder.

1. Set a default folder

If you navigate to a particular folder often, then you can set it as your default and save yourself a few clicks each time you open Finder. Click the Finder menu in the menu bar and select Preferences. Under the General tab, you will see that for New Finder windows show, the default is All My Files. You can change to your Home or Documents folder or whichever folder you use the most.

2. Two new Sierra settings

If you are using MacOS Sierra, click the Advanced tab in Preferences and you’ll see two new check boxes:

  • Remove items from the Trash after 30 days
  • Keep folders on top when sorting by name

finder-pref-advanced.pngfinder-pref-advanced.png
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET

The first helps you keep your trash from overflowing with files, and the second helps you navigate Finder more easily by grouping your folders above your files.

3. Open, says me

Hit Command-N to open new Finder window. Hit Command-T to open new Finder tab.

4. Open specific folder in Finder

Use the following keyboard shortcuts to open a specific folder in Finder:

  • Command-Shift-C — top-level Computer folder
  • Command-Shift-D — Desktop folder
  • Command-Shift-F — All My Files folder
  • Command-Shift-G — Go to Folder window
  • Command-Shift-H — Home folder for your account
  • Command-Shift-I — iCloud Drive folder
  • Command-Shift-O — Documents folder
  • Command-Shift-R — AirDrop folder
  • Command-Shift-U — Utilities folder
  • Command-Option-L — Downloads folder

5. Start a search in Finder

Hit Command-F to open Finder with the search bar activated.

6. Get Info

Hit Command-I to open the Get Info panel for a selected file where you can view the kind of file, its size, when it was created and last modified, among other attributes.

7. Sidebar shortcuts

Hit Command-Option-S to show or hide Finder’s sidebar. Hit Command-Control-T to add a selected item — a folder, usually — to the sidebar.

8. Other bars

Finder has two other information bars in addition to the sidebar:

Use Command-Option-P to show or hide the path bar. It’s a narrow bar along the bottom edge of Finder that shows you the folder path to the file you currently have selected.

Use Command-/ to show or hide the status bar. The status bar sits below the path bar and shows you how many files you have selected out of how many total files in the current folder you are viewing. If you are using iCloud, it also shows how much space you have remaining on Apple’s cloud service.

9. Change Finder views

You can change the view of Finder by clicking the four buttons in the menu bar at the top of a Finder window. Alternatively, you can use keyboard shortcuts:

  • Command-1 — icon view
  • Command-2 — list view
  • Command-3 — column view
  • Command-4 — Cover Flow view

10. View your View Options

Hit Command-J to open the View Options panel. This lets you choose, among other things, the types of columns — Date Modified, Size, Tags, and so on — that want to see for Finder’s column view. You can set different columns to show for different folders in Finder.

11. Quick Look slideshow

The Quick Look button (the eyeball button in the Toolbar) is useful for quickly previewing files, saving you from needing to open another app. You can jump right into a full-screen slideshow by holding down the Option key when clicking the Quick Look button.

If you are using MacOS Sierra, you’ll notice that the eyeball button is missing. Thankfully, there are a couple keyboard shortcuts to use Finder’s Quick View feature. Press the spacebar to view any selected files via Quick Look or Option-spacebar to open a full-screen slideshow. These shortcuts also work with OS X El Capitan.

12. New folders

Hit Command-Shift-N to create a new folder in Finder.

Hit Command-Option-N to create a new smart folder. A Smart folder displays files by search criteria you define and are updated on the fly as you change, add and remove files. For more, read How to create and deploy smart folders in OS X.

13. Shortcut to trash can

Save yourself the trouble of dragging a file to the trash can in your Dock. Instead, select the files or folders in Finder you’d like to trash and hit Command-Delete. In related news, you can hit Command-Shift-Delete to empty the trash.

14. Add file or folder to the Dock

Use Command-Control-Shift-T to add a file or folder to the Dock. It will sit to the right of the Dock’s divider.

15. Customize the toolbar

From the top menu, go to View > Customize Toolbar to drag buttons to and from the toolbar at the top of Finder. If you find that you don’t like the changes you made, just drag the default set back to Finder to start again.

What you need to know about deleting Apple apps on iOS 10 – CNET

Gone are the days of creating a junk folder and tucking it away on your last home screen, full of Apple apps you never use. The Apple app graveyard is in the cloud now; no really, it is.

After installing iOS 10, you can delete 23 of the apps Apple preinstalls on every iOS device. Here’s the complete list:

Calculator

iCloud Drive

Reminders

Calendar

iTunes Store

Stocks

Compass

Mail

Tips

Contacts

Maps

Videos

FaceTime

Music

Voice Memos

Find My Friends

News

Watch app

Home

Notes

Weather

iBooks

Podcasts

As you can see, some of those apps offer core functionality to your iOS device. Naturally, that means deleting app like Mail or Calendar could lead to some lost functionality and issues. More on that in a minute, but first let’s go over how you can rid yourself of some of the more annoying apps.

Delete an app

delete-mail-app-ios-10.pngEnlarge Image

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET

If we want to get technical about it, you aren’t truly deleting Apple apps from your iOS device. You’re actually hiding the icon and deleting all personal information and settings for the app you delete. According to Apple, all of its apps combined only use up 150 MB of storage on your device, so there’s no need to fret about freeing up space by deleting Apple apps.

Deleting an app is the same process as any other app: Long-press on the app icon, wait for it to start jiggling, then tap on the X.

Side effects

Right now, Apple doesn’t provide a means to set a third-party app as the default app. Meaning, if you were to delete Mail you can’t tell iOS 10 to use Outlook or Gmail in its place. That translates into lost functionality when using Siri (e.g., “Siri, send an email” will now prompt you to install Mail). A similar message will show up when you tap on an email address.

mail-app-missing-ios-10.jpgmail-app-missing-ios-10.jpg

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET

However, there are some areas of iOS that will work with third-party apps. After deleting the Calendar app, you can still use Siri to add appointments to your calendar and view entries in apps like Fantastical 2. Despite Siri working, you will still lose out on the ability to tap on a date in an email or text message and view your calendar for possible scheduling conflicts.

Removing an Apple app will naturally remove any associated widgets and Apple Watch apps. Furthermore, removing apps like Podcasts and Music will also remove the app from a car via CarPlay.

Reinstalling an Apple app

To bring a deleted Apple app back to life, open the App Store and search for it. Tap on the download button, then marvel at how quickly the app is restored. Since the app was never truly deleted from your device, tapping the download button simply reactivates it. You will need to go back into the Settings app and adjust the apps’ settings to work as you expect. Reinstalling Mail, for example, reset my viewing preferences and signature.

Apple details the new feature in a support document, which can be found here.

How to transfer contacts from iPhone to Android

htc-10-iphone-4.jpg?itok=bDY0CV4g

How do I transfer my iPhone contacts to my Android phone?

You’ve made the brilliant decision to switch from iPhone to Android. Congratulations and welcome! Now you just need to get all of your contacts off your iPhone and onto your new Android phone and your Apple ties will be severed and you shall be reborn anew (or something like that).

Here’s how!

You’ll first want to make sure that your iPhone is backed up to iCloud. Once that’s done, you’re ready to make the move. You’ll start by exporting your vCard.

  • How to export contacts using iCloud
  • How to import contacts using Google Contacts
  • How to sync your Google account with your Android phone
  • How to add your iPhone contacts to your Android phone

How to export contacts using iCloud

Launch your web browser on your computer. This process does NOT work with Chrome. Use Firefox or Safari.
Navigate to iCloud.com.
Sign in using your Apple ID and password.
Click Contacts.

Click All Contacts in the top left corner of your screen.

transfer-iphone-contacts-backup-icloud-s

Press the Command key and the A key on your keyboard simultaneously if you have a Mac. Press the ctrl key and A key on your keyboard simultaneously if you have a PC.
Click the Settings button on the bottom left corner of your screen. It looks like a gear.

Click Export vCard. Your contacts will all be saved as a .vcf file in your downloads. If a new window pops up, you’ll just have to select all of your contacts again, right click, and export again.

transfer-iphone-contacts-backup-icloud-s

How to import contacts using Google Contacts

Next, you’ll import your vCard using Google. If you don’t have a Google account, sign up now, since you’ll need a Google account for your Android phone. If you’ve already set up your Android phone, you likely set up a Google account in the process.

Launch your web browser on your computer. Any web browser will work.
Sign into your Google account.
Click the Google apps button in the top right corner of your screen.

Click Contacts.

transfer-iphone-contacts-import-google-s

Click Import Contacts on the bottom of the left menu.

Click Choose File.

transfer-iphone-contacts-import-google-s

Click your vCard and open it from your downloads or wherever you have saved it.
Click Import. All of your contacts should appear after a few seconds.
Click Find and merge duplicates if the red message appears at the top of your screen.

Click Merge in the pop-up. This isn’t always entirely accurate, so double-check your contacts after for duplicates.

How to sync your Google account with your Android phone

You can sync your phone with your Google account, which can be done from any Android phone.

If you haven’t turned your Android phone on yet, you’re in luck; you’ll be asked if you want to sync an account during setup. Just use the account that has your contacts and follow the on-screen prompts.

If you have turned on your Android phone and gone through the setup, here’s how to sync your Google account to get your contacts on your phone.

Launch the Settings app from your home screen, the Notification Shade, or the app drawer.
Tap Accounts.

Tap Google.

transfer-iphone-contacts-sync-google-scr

Tap the switch next to Contacts to make sure that contact sync is turned on if it’s not already.
Tap the more button on the top right corner of your screen. It’ll either be the word More or three vertical dots.

Tap Sync now.

sync-iphone-contacts-android-google-sync

How to add your iPhone contacts to your Android phone

You’ll only want to email yourself your vCard if you don’t have a Google account to sync with your Android phone. If you do have a Google account, your phone will inevitably sync with it and then you’ll likely have duplicate contacts and it’ll just be a mess.

Launch your email app from your home screen or app drawer of your Android phone.
Open the email containing your vCard file.
Tap the download button next to the vCard file to download it.
Swipe down from the top of your screen to reveal the Notification Shade.

Tap the completed download notification to open the vCard file.

transfer-iphone-contacts-download-screen

Depending on which phone you have, you’ll be able to save your contacts to your device or to the Google Contacts app (only if you have a Nexus, Android One, or Google Play Edition device).

Moto Z Droid & MotoMods unboxing!

Buried deep inside the boxes of the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid editions, we find what lurks in the hearts of smartphones. Or something.

As the Moto Z edges ever closer to its release … sometime … we’re getting a fresh look at what of the year’s most anticipated (and, frankly, interesting) Android smartphones. Specifically, today we’re taking a look at Verizon’s versions — the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid editions.

The basic rundown, since our first look at them at Lenovo’s TechWorld event in July: These are 5.5-inch phones, with the Force Droid model also sporting a larger battery, and a shatterproof display. The BIG deal, though? MotoMods — the replaceable back covers that essentially turn the phone into something new. A long-running powerhouse. A portable speaker. And a portable projector. And those are just the first three. (Plus, we’re getting our first look at the USB-C adapter for your headphones!)

We’ve got a lot more on the new Moto Z phones coming your way in the near future. Stay tuned!

Electronic billboard reminds Floridians not to ‘Poké and Drive’

Clear Channel wants to remind you not to play Pokémon Go while driving. The company has taken out space on an electronic billboard in Jacksonville, Florida telling people not to play the popular mobile game while they drive.

poke-stop-1.jpg?itok=mFpLXNYXpoke-stop-2.jpg?itok=ge2sQV6Spoke-stop-3.jpg?itok=DDSp3fKZ

As you can see, the PSA changes, saying “Pidgey can wait” or “the Poké Stop can wait.” It’s certainly a clever way to get someone’s attention.

If you’re really enjoying Pokémon Go, that’s great, but remember to practice some common sense. Don’t dart out into streets chasing a Squirtle, or walk into people pursuing an Electrode. And certainly don’t play the game and drive, because that’s a very good way to get yourself or someone else hurt.

Thanks to Alemuit for the tip!
