Periscope #saves your broadcasts beyond 24 hours

Periscope broadcasts can low live longer than a day, so long as you add #save to their titles. In fact, any broadcast with the hashtag will stay online forever unless you delete it. Periscope videos are typically only accessible for 24 hours. Company CEO Kayvon Beykpour announced the feature’s launch as a public beta, explaining that they’re still working on a full solution that won’t require you to add #save to your titles.

That full-featured solution will also come with a better way to manage your videos. For now, the company wants you to test it out — you don’t even have to update the app — and let them know what you think. Besides #save, Beykpour also announced that Periscope now prioritizes people you know when they enter the room while you’re broadcasting. That way, you can chat with them even if there are a ton of other viewers in the room. Even if you’re just a viewer, you’ll still get notified if someone in your friends list starts watching the same broadcast.

Working on supporting broadcasts beyond 24h! Starting now, you can use our public beta by using #save in your title! https://t.co/LsjqsSib7v

Twitch user allegedly broadcasts assault on significant other

A Twitch user is under fire for purportedly broadcasting an assault on his partner. The account, belonging to “joedaddy505,” has been closed on Twitch due to service violations, but at least one YouTube video of the stream contains audio of what sounds like the broadcaster repeatedly hitting a crying woman and insulting her. Viewers have speculated that since there was no video to go with the audio, “Joedaddy505” may have thought his stream had ended. When reached for comment, a Twitch spokesperson said that the company doesn’t comment on service violations. We also asked Twitch if law enforcement had been contacted and were given the following response:

Twitch’s Privacy Policy explains when we disclose user information. If a credible threat of imminent physical harm or actual harm to others is made on our platform and timely reported to Twitch, Twitch makes best efforts to reach out to appropriate local law enforcement (if we are able to identify the user or location). We provide law enforcement sufficient information to assess the threat and respond to the immediate incident to the extent we have such information. Generally, we do not provide PII of our users to other users or to law enforcement absent valid legal process.

Social accounts including Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for “joedaddy505” have been scrubbed clean. Reddit users have posted screenshots of Joedaddy505’s comments on Instagram, where he claims that the altercation was the result of his significant other starting a fight with him on-stream. While some claim he sexually assaulted his partner, he refutes that. “I did not rape her. I hit her and fell on top of her and hit her again.”

This is a dire side-effect of anyone having the ability to broadcast their life on the internet, good moments and otherwise. Last month, a Periscope user was indicted for broadcasting her friend’s sexual assault.

If you or someone you know (or are watching online) is the victim of domestic abuse, do not hesitate to contact the National Domestic Violence hotline at 1−800−799−7233 or 1−800−787−3224. It also offers a live, online chat system if calling isn’t an option.

Nintendo and Vans team up on retro gaming sneakers

A Nintendo-themed line of Vans sneakers has mysteriously popped up online. A European store listed the range that includes classic gaming icons like Zelda, Mario and Duck Hunt, adorning some of Vans’ most popular styles (like the Old Skool). Not much else is known about the collaboration, and the listing seems to have been removed (though a cache of it can be found here). The only other info being the collection will likely go on sale in June, priced at around €65 ($75). This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo sneakers, but it’s the first time we’ve seen them done in a way we’d actually want to wear.
More important than all that, is that we settle something. Engadget Editor Nick Summers mistakenly thinks the Zelda-themed slip-ons are the best (bottom left). When clearly the pixelated white pair (top right) are the ones you want? Either way, whether you’re team cool white, or club crazy carpet-patterned Zelda thingies, you can choose your stripes for real next month. Of course, if they don’t happen to end up in a store near you, you might want to make sure you’ve got your Instagram hashtag game down, as that could be your best plan B for snagging a pair.

Hardened Security Features of iPhone 5s Successfully Hacked in LAPD Murder Investigation

Los Angeles police investigators have discovered a workable method to bypass the hardened security features of a locked iPhone 5s, according to The Los Angeles Times.

In court documents seen by the newspaper yesterday, LAPD detectives found a “forensic cellphone expert” who could unlock the iPhone 5s belonging to April Jace, the slain wife of “The Shield” actor Michael Jace, who is accused of killing her at their L.A. home in 2014.

The claim appeared in a search warrant filed during the same period that the FBI was demanding Apple unlock the earlier model iPhone 5c of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook. In that high-profile case, the FBI eventually unlocked the phone with the help of professional hackers, paying them up to $1 million for a tool exploiting a security vulnerability.

According to FBI director James Comey, the method obtained by the bureau only worked on a “narrow slice of phones”, which did not include models of the iPhone 5s and after, presumably because the latter devices are equipped with Apple’s proprietary Secure Enclave, a separate security-hardened portion of the core processing chip with its own secure boot and personalized software where private encryption keys are stored and used to secure data.

Prior to the the FBI’s acquisition of its hacking method, several security experts warned that the ability the bureau sought from Apple would in fact work on later devices, while Apple claimed back in February that the method the FBI asked it for to unlock an iPhone 5c was also possible on newer devices with the Secure Enclave. According to TechCrunch, Apple said at the time that the technical solutions would be different than they are on the iPhone 5c, but not impossible.

According to The Times, the search warrant filed in the April Jace killing did not detail the method used by the LAPD to open the later-model iPhone 5s, nor did police reveal the identity of the cellphone expert. It’s also unclear what operating system April Jace’s phone had.

The iPhone 5s has been at the center of the investigation after it was claimed that the actor and his wife argued “about their relationship” via text message shortly before he is alleged to have shot her. Michael Jace’s attorneys successfully persuaded a judge to delay his murder trial, arguing that the dead woman’s phone should undergo a more exhaustive search than one initially conducted by police.

Shortly after her killing, April Jace’s cellphone was locked by a passcode, which “hindered” the investigation. But in January 2015, an Apple technician was ordered by an L.A. judge to help police extract data from the phone, according to the search warrant.

That attempt apparently failed to obtain any information and a second attempt by the L.A. County district attorney’s office the same month left the phone “disabled”. The following month, authorities tried to inspect the iPhone but it didn’t even turn on, the warrant stated.

But in March, investigators learned that a forensic cellphone expert could “override” the security features and let authorities view the phone’s contents. A senior investigator with the district attorney’s office was apparently then able to examine the phone in April. Jace, 53, is currently awaiting trial in the case.

Last week it was reported that the FBI will not reveal to Apple the method it used to hack into the iPhone of the San Bernardino shooter, because it does not have the rights to the technical data about how the method functions. Apple wants details on the flaw so a fix can be implemented. Until it does, the FBI can keep using the vulnerability so long as it remains unpatched.

Amid its dispute with the FBI, reports suggest Apple has already begun work on implementing stronger security measures to protect iOS devices in order to counter the threat of hackers rather than the government. Apple has also said it has revamped its internal security teams.

Bentley Apple Watch App Puts In-Car Controls on Passenger’s Wrist

British luxury car maker Bentley has released an Apple Watch app that treats Bentayga SUV passengers to a bevy of car functions not seen before on a smartwatch.

The app uses “bespoke digital architecture” that synchronizes with the vehicle’s Touch Screen Remote (TSR) system, enabling passengers to access in-car climate control and entertainment systems, including the ability to adjust the heating, ventilation, and massage functions of their seats.

Elsewhere, users can also monitor real-time car information from within the app, such as vehicle speed, distance travelled, and outside temperature. Meanwhile, media functions for hi-fi and digital TV include the ability to change volume, adjust playback controls, and switch media sources.

And if the driver seat is too reclined for passengers’ liking, this can be adjusted from the app, too.

The Bentayga TSR app is a free download available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. [Direct Link]

The Bentayga SUV starts at $229,100.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End review – CNET

The Good Uncharted 4 is a blockbuster adventure game with a wild and compelling story, biting characters, amazing action and jaw-dropping environments.

The Bad The climbing and puzzles can start to feel repetitive.

The Bottom Line Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is a spectacular send-off that celebrates the franchise, all while delivering superb storytelling, acting, production values — you name it.

If this turns out to be Nathan Drake’s last hurrah, then the guy’s going out on top.

Yes, things are finally going well for the luckiest (and unluckiest) adventurer in the history of the world. Every ledge he grabs breaks, every bridge he crosses collapses and every car he drives winds up exploding — but inevitably, Nathan manages to crawl his way back up to the surface, defy gravity and look damn good in the process.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the PlayStation 4 exclusive you’ve probably been waiting for — one of the reasons you plunked down a couple a hundred bucks on the console in the first place.

With blockbuster exclusives being what they are of late — and by that I mean a scarce commodity — it’s natural to hold hopes high. So if you’re the least bit concerned that Uncharted 4 is somehow destined to disappoint, rest assured. It does not.

Sure, there’s a few things to roll your eyes at. But just know this: Uncharted 4 is a spectacle of epic proportions. It suffers from adrenaline fatigue. Meaning, you will probably — no, definitely — reach a point in this game where you refuse to believe there’s more to it. But it just keeps going.

Naughty Dog

That’s only about half the story in Uncharted 4. For as much as the game turns all its dials up to 11, there’s also more downtime than I can recall in the games prior. You’ll spend a generous portion climbing around, looking for the next ledge and figuring out the game’s handful of puzzles. At times the excessive climbing does start growing redundant and there are a few too many puzzle cliches.

It’s not all guns-blazing in Uncharted 4. Far from it. Hours at a time go by without a single shot being fired. And for me, that felt great. I’ve always had morality issues when it comes to these games. They’re undeniably fun to play, but something in me can’t quite put it out of my head that I’m globetrotting around the world in search of ancient treasure all while leaving a path of murder and destruction in my wake.

There’s no skirting around it. You shoot a lot of people in Uncharted games. And the buddy-action vibe of the series just kind of makes it all okay. I think there’s some recognition of that in Uncharted 4, if only how noticeably infrequent those kind of engagements seem to be.

That’s not to say Uncharted 4 is without any memorable gunfights. I enjoyed the vast majority of them, because when they do show up, they are some of the best the series has had to offer. They take place in spectacular fashion — along rooftops, off cliffs and speeding through flatlands. Shooting feels really good, as if it’s been even further refined. It’s the most satisfying it’s ever been in an Uncharted game.

Enemy AI is also really sharp in A Thief’s End. Thankfully, Drake has a number of new abilities that open up the door for stealthier approaches.

Nathan can now tag enemies from afar and can see their awareness levels through visual cues above their heads. It’s possible to make your way through some areas without shooting anyone, though you’ll likely have that plan foiled more often than not.

I played through the campaign on normal difficulty but was significantly challenged throughout. I got the exact amount of frustration I could handle, if that makes any sense.

Is there anything better than Nintendo Vans sneakers?

Footwear brand Vans has teamed with Nintendo to develop a range of its trademark trainers that retro games fans will adore.

Accidentally leaked by German sports shoe retailer 43einhalb, a range of Vans skate sneakers, high-tops and flip flops are coming that feature Nintendo-inspired designs.

Vans has often released licensed footwear, with Star Wars and other tie-ins, but few have piqued our interest as much as these.

Officially, the range wasn’t due to be unveiled until 23 May and the German retailer’s dedicated webpage has since disappeared. Images of the full lineup isn’t even supposed to be completely revealed until 1 June, so there might be others that will be added to the gallery above in time.

READ: Nintendo NX: Release date, specs and everything you need to know

Still, even with the leak surely there’s no harm done as we can’t wait to see these trainers in the flesh.

We particularly like the blue Zelda design, with an 8-bit Link, although the NES controller high-tops are well worth consideration too.

It would certainly be good to get hold of a pair prior to E3, also in June. Who needs cosplay when you are rocking cool Ninty shoes?

BT pledges £6 billion for superfast broadband and 4G upgrades

In its first set of financial results since it absorbed EE, the UK’s biggest mobile operator, BT has made a fresh commitment to improving broadband and 4G connectivity across Britain. The company says it is to spend £6 billion on improving its services, which will include extending its superfast broadband coverage to 12 million homes and covering 95 percent of the UK by 2020.

If you feel like you’ve heard these upgrade promises before, you’re not wrong. Last September, BT CEO Gavin Patterson promised to offer minimum broadband speeds of at least 24Mbps to 95 percent of the population by 2017. BT is getting there — it’s recently begun upgrading entry-level Infinity fibre broadband customers to 52Mbps — but with Virgin now delivering speeds of up to 200Mbps, the UK’s biggest telecoms provider is still playing catch-up.

With G.Fast technology a mixture of fibre and copper delivered by  small business broadband from woav — a mixture of fibre and copper — BT is on target to offer up to 300Mbps speeds to 10 million homes and businesses. However, it also plans to broaden its Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) infrastructure to 2 million additional premises — mostly new build houses, high streets and business parks in urban areas — where speeds can reach up to 1Gbps.

The announcement comes shortly after UK communications watchdog Ofcom said it won’t split BT and its Openreach broadband arm. The regulator said the company must improve the speed of its fibre broadband rollout and provide more opportunities for its broadband rivals, which are forced to lease Openreach lines, to deploy their own connections on telegraph poles and in underground ducts.

Sky was quick to blast Ofcom’s decision not to break up BT and Openreach and is now attacking its rival’s updated plans: “Today’s statement shows that BT continues to see copper as the basis of its network for 21st century Britain. Despite BT’s claims, it is clearer than ever that their plans for fibre to the premise broadband will bypass almost every existing UK home,” said Sky Group Chief Operating Officer Andrew Griffith.

“This limited ambition has been dragged out of BT by the threat of regulatory action, demonstrating once again why an independent Openreach, free to raise its own long-term capital, is the best way for the UK to get the fibre network it needs.”
