Tizen OS shown on video

The new Tizen operating system was caught running on a Samsung prototype device during the Tizen Developer Conference currently held in San Francisco. Last week the very first version of Tizen was announced named Larkspur.

De device was made by Samsung, one of the members supporting Tizen. Despite this being a prototype, the device can tell something about the capabilities of Tizen as well as a possible final product.

The display uses a 720p resolution and the dualcore ARM processor runs at 1.2 GHz. One of the founding members of Tizen is Intel. So using an ARM processor feels somewhat odd. Intel recently released an energy efficient Atom processor used for mobile phone and tablets. Further specs are NFC, WiFi and Bluetooth.

TouchWiz

The interface seems to borrow a lot from Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. Some will be disappointed by this decision. If other handset makers will utilise the same UI is unknown. How long it will take before we can expect Tizen devices to reach market is also unknown but we expect this to take a while.

HTC brings affordable but premium Desire C

Not only has HTC eye for the high end One series, also the more affordable models aren’t forgotten. The new HTC Desire C rocks Beats Audio, runs the latest Android version and is packed in a premium casing.

This pretty much sums up the HTC Desire C. Don’t get fooled by the ‘Desire’ name that was earlier used for the more high end phones. Ever since the introduction of the Desire S that name isn’t used for high end products.

HTC Desire C overview

Don’t let that be a disappointment, the Desire C is still one good looking phone. The 3.5 inch display seems small, but don’t forget that the iPhone uses the same diameter. The processor runs at 600 MHz and should be enough for everyday use. The 5 megapixel camera uses a fixed focus lens and unfortunately lacks a flash.

Beat Audio Technology

The Desire C is equipped with Beat Audio. You don’t need fancy expensive Beats headsets, your own buds can be used instead. Just like with its pricy One series you get 25 GB of free Dropbox space. But only for two years.

You can grab a Desire C in Polar White, Flamenco Red or Stealh Black. Expect this device to hit market around June. Retailprice is expected at 229 EURO including taxes but without contract.

“New iPhone 5 uses 1136 x 640 pixels resolution”

It seems certain that Apple’s next iPhone features a bigger screen. 9to5Mac reports that Apple will use a resolution of 1136x640p. This isn’t wider than the current iPhone, only higher. Besides the larger screen there will be a redesigned dock connector.

The overall looks and more important the screen size are unchanged for many years. To compete with high end Android smartphones Apple will increase the screen from the current 3.5 to 4 inch. Or to be more precise; 3.95 inch. This means there will be exactly 176 more lines. Just enough to include one more row of icons. Changes have been made to iOS 6 so most apps will automatically be upscaled. Apps that use landscape mode like games will need some adjudgements.

How 4 inch looks like compared to the current 3.5 inch

Apple is reported to use two test devices; the N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2). It’s uncertain what the difference is between the two.

New dock connector

Next to the larger screen there will also be a complete redesigned dock connector that’s smaller than the current iPhone. This means accessories like speakers won’t work with the new iPhone. Apple is planning to equip this rumored smaller dock to all iOS devices that is slightly smaller than a Mini-USB port, but larger than Micro-USB.

HTC One XL comes to Europe

HTC and Vodafone announced that there bringing the HTC One XL, the LTE version of the HTC One X, to Europe. This will be one of the first official LTE phones that lands in Europe.

The main difference between the One XL and the One X is of course the addition of LTE. Since Nvidia’s chipset doesn’t support LTE HTC is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. This has two cores less, but should be almost as fast as Nvidia’s counterpart.

The HTC One XL has a similar look as the One X

The One XL will land in Germany first. If HTC and Vodafone have plans to expand this is not yet known. The HTC One XL runs Android 4.0 with Sense 4.0, packs a 4.7 inch Super LCD2 screen and has a 8 megapixel camera.

Sony announces waterproof Xperia go toughphone

Waterproof and sturdy phones nowadays are pretty beefed-up and, well, ugly. Sony proofs us wrong and shows a touchphone that is pretty and waterproof at the same time.

Touchphones are no stranger for Sony. They previously announced the Xperia active. With the new Xperia go Sony has a trustworthy successor. Research shows that Water Resistance is the third most important feature people want on their phone. Unfortunately sturdy phones aren’t that good looking, till now.

De Sony Xperia go

Even the specs are pretty. An 3.5 inch Reality Display, 5 megapixel camera and dualcore 1 GHz processor. The housing is IP67 certified, meaning that some water won’t destroy your phone. The Xperia go will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread but Sony promises an update to Ice Cream Sandwich. Expect the Sony Xperia go in shops somewhere in the third quarter at an expected retailprice of 299 euros. There will be three different colours.

ETSI approves Apples nano-SIM

Apple idea about a new smaller simcard has been approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. With some small adjudgements from Motorola and RIM we can expect this new simcard in future mobile phones.

This ends the ongoing discussion about the successor of the microSIM. The fourth generation simcard (4FF) is 40% smaller and measures 12.3 by 8.8 millimeters. The nanoSIM is almost identical to the current generation simcard but without the plastic rim. This seems the most important reason for ETSI to approve this design because this ensures backwards compatibility.

The original design was submitted by Apple and contains some small adjudgements from Motorola and RIM. Biggest opponent of the design is Nokia. Reason for this is that the new nanoSIM fits in a microSD memory slot causing jamming. The current design doesn’t prevent this, but is doesn’t fit in a microSIM adapter anymore (mini-UICC). Main reason for a smaller simcard is that this leaves more room for other components.

Samsung Galaxy S III teardown

Here on NewMobile we like a good operation now and then. A dissection of a mobile phone that is. This time the unlucky patient is the Galaxy S III. In case you have a weak stomach, please look away now!

Surprisingly the dissection isn’t performed by the men and women of iFixit but by Chipworks. They teamed up with iFixit and therefore there isn’t a Repairability Score given by iFixit.

Gutting the Galaxy S III gave a little surprise, because it seems it uses the same camera module as the iPhone 4S. Both phones should make the same quality pictures, but of course a litte software helps as well. It is also suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S III uses a magnesium frame, although this isn’t confirmed. What is certain, is that replacing a faulty display can cost you. The glass is fixed to the touchscreen which is fixed to the frame. So please be extra carefull with Samsungs new flagship.

Galaxy Note successor set for October launch

The Galaxy Note turned out to be a great success for Samsung. To everyone’s surprise, because the 5.3 inch big smartphone was met with great skepticism when it launched. Therefore it seems inevitable Samsung brings a Galaxy Note II.

Apparently there is a great market for big touchphones and Samsung isn’t stepping back. The new Galaxy Note II is set to have a 5.5 inch display with an equal big resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels. Samsung sold more than 7 million Galaxy Note’s so a successor seems certain.

The enormous Samsung Galaxy Note

Rumours state the new Galaxy Note will receive a dualcore Samsung Exynos processor with 1.5 GB of RAM. The camerasensor stays at 8 megapixel, just the same as the Galaxy S III. But if it shoots the same high quality pictures that is fine with us. There is also a possible date for announcement; October of this year.
