GameBattles enters the Play Store
If you’re into gaming, the new Android application GameBattles is worth checking out.
GameBattles is a new app in the Play Store for online gaming. The app lets users take each other on in modern-day games like Call of Duty, Halo, FIFA, and Madden. However, the list doesn’t end there. GameBattles has a whole community full of competitive players looking to get their game on! Users can even win real money for their video game talents.
Like all great gaming communities, GameBattles keeps track of all your stats including wins, loses, matches, and history. However, it should be noted that doing most of this will require manual submission. Users can also earn trophies and achievements making the experience even more fun.
Overall, it’s great to see the service make its way to mobile. The app works well with both smartphones and tables. The download is live right now and can be accessed by clicking on the link down below.

Commercial aircraft get their first global emissions standard

Ground-based vehicles have had emissions standards for a while (just ask Volkswagen), but commercial aircraft like passenger jets? Not so much. However, the world just took one big step toward cleaning up the skies: a total of 23 countries have agreed to set the first international carbon dioxide emissions standard for commercial aircraft. If the measures are adopted as recommended, new airplane models will have to meet the tougher guidelines in 2020. New aircraft from existing model lines will follow suit in 2023, and there will be a complete cutoff for non-standard aircraft in 2028.
So long as everything goes forward, this could go some distance toward cutting back on airplane pollution. It could cut over 650 million tons of CO2 emissions between 2020 and 2040, or as much as you’d get if you stopped 140 million cars from running for a year. This won’t be as good as moving to pollution-free air travel — humanity will need still-exotic technology like electric jets for that. All the same, it could play an important role in meeting climate change reduction goals.

Apple CEO Tim Cook can’t take a good picture with his iPhone
When you’re the CEO of Apple and you have nearly 2 million followers on Twitter, your Twitter photo game better be on point all the time.

Sadly, Apple CEO Tim Cook didn’t remember that bit of wisdom Sunday when he posted the photo seen above to his Twitter stream.
Taken from what appears to be about the 15 yard line of Levi’ Stadium in San Francisco, the photo of the postgame celebration after the Broncos won Super Bowl XL was a bit blurry. And the Twitterverse was not shy about letting him know it.
One user responded with this:
@tim_cook Uh… Is the message here that iPhones take terrible photos of important moments?! Because that really seems to be the msg here.
— Rich Brome (@rbrome) February 8, 2016
Another posted this response:
@rbrome@tim_cook Don’t blame the tools, blame the workman!
— Anthony Henderson (@AntPHenderson) February 8, 2016
And it appears Tim Cook actually blocked this user after his response:
New iPhone campaign starring @tim_cook pic.twitter.com/BXXxGsOV5h
— Soju Boy Tell ‘Em (@andykoh_) February 8, 2016
Just goes to show you that nobody, not even Tim Cook, is safe from the wrath of the Internet.

Samsung scuttles Galaxy S7 Edge+ in UK
Samsung has killed its plans to launch the Galaxy S7 Edge+ in the United Kingdom.
Sources have reported that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 6 in August, reestablishing it as the company’s flagship for large screen lovers in the UK. The sources cited backlash from fans of the Note as part of the reason for not launching the Galaxy S7 Edge+ in the UK.
Samsung was predictably tight-lipped about this development. But it appears likely the S7 and S7 Edge will launch later this month and go on sale soon after.

New Features in tvOS 9.2 Beta 3: Dictation Support and App Store Siri Search
Throughout the tvOS 9.2 beta testing process, Apple has been steadily adding new features. Today’s third beta introduced a pair of new features that are quite useful: dictation and App Store search for Siri. We’ve made a quick video that shows off the new features and how they work on the fourth-generation Apple TV.
With the new dictation option, it’s now possible for Apple TV owners to dictate text and spell user names and passwords rather than typing them. After installing tvOS 9.2 beta 3, users are prompted to enable or disable dictation.
After dictation is enabled, the tvOS search bar alternates between a blank search field and an option to hold down the Siri button on the remote to dictate text. While speaking into the remote, a live levels meter is displayed on the screen so you can be sure the dictation feature is activated.

The first version of tvOS had few options for entering text, requiring users to slowly type in passwords and user names with the on-screen text entry box with the Siri remote. Since then, Apple has added support for the Apple Remote app, with tvOS 9.2 bringing support for dictation and Bluetooth keyboards.
App Store search for Siri is the second new feature in today’s beta. With the new Siri support, voice-based searches can be used to find specific apps or app categories, such as games, in the App Store. The feature greatly enhances the process of finding apps on the fourth-generation Apple TV, which was previously limited to text-based searches.
Along with App Store search for Siri, Bluetooth keyboard support, and dictation, tvOS 9.2 includes support for iCloud Photo Library and Live Photos, and allows users to group apps into folders on the Home screen like on iOS devices. It also includes a new look for the App Switcher interface, and brings MapKit for developers.

tvOS 9.2 is currently available only to developers, but it should see a public release in the spring likely alongside iOS 9.3, OS X 10.11.4, and watchOS 2.2.

New watch strap will bring contactless payments to Pebble smartwatches
One of Pebble’s first unique features advertised with the Pebble Time was that it would support third-party bands that brought extra functionality to the watch. A new Kickstarter from Fit Pay Inc. has sprung up that plans on offering a mobile payment solution for Pebble watches with a device called Pagaré. It uses NFC to replicate what we’ve seen in Apple’s Apple Watch and what’s eventually going to come to Samsung’s Gear S2.
The Pagaré looks pretty similar to the watch band that ships with the black Pebble Time, but it includes the secure element for payments and an NFC chip, plus its own charger at the end of the strap. Not flashy, but in this case, that’s probably a good thing.
With over 9 million places already accepting mobile payments, Pagaré will work anywhere that Android Pay currently works at. And like other major mobile payment systems, it uses an extremely secure network that doesn’t actually keep your card on file, so you won’t have to worry about numbers or PINs getting stolen. It’s pretty crazy that paying for something with your watch is more secure than using a bank-issued card, but that’s the state of the industry right now.
Interestingly, Pagaré also doesn’t need your phone nearby to use. Once it’s set up, you can leave your phone at home or in the car and still use your Pebble to make a payment. It also doubles as a charger for your Pebble, since the USB cable is built into the end of the strap. You can plug it right into your computer to charge it up, skipping the magnetic charger that ships with Pebble watches. That’s a great combination alongside the Pebble’s extremely fast charging time.
Here’s the bad news: the Kickstarter hasn’t reached its goal yet. It’ll need $120,000 to get off the ground, and you can secure yours early for $49.
Anybody interested?

Smart car algorithm sees pedestrians as well as you can

It’s one thing for computers to spot people in relatively tame academic situations, but it’s another when they’re on the road — you need your car to spot that jaywalker in time to avoid a collision. Thankfully, UC San Diego researchers have made that more realistic than ever. They’ve crafted a pedestrian detection algorithm that’s much quicker and more accurate than existing systems. It can spot people at a rate of 2-4 frames per second, or roughly as well as humans can, while making half as many mistakes as existing systems. That could make the difference between a graceful stop and sudden, scary braking.
The key is to quickly and gradually cut out the areas that don’t contain people (such as the sky or empty road) and lean on deep learning at the last stages, when you want complex image recognition to confirm what you’re looking at. It saves a lot of the computing power normally needed for pedestrian recognition, since you’re limiting the focus to just a handful of areas instead of large chunks of the screen.
UCSD’s current system can only recognize one object type at a time, so you couldn’t just drop it into a car by itself. However, the team plans to have it detecting multiple object types and become far more practical. And it’s not limited to vehicles, either. This could be useful in robots, security cameras and other devices that need to spot humans in a heartbeat.

1Password gets Material Design makeover and fingerprint unlock

1Password has pushed out an update for Android devices at last, and it brings huge changes to the app. The password manager will look like a brand new application the moment you upgrade to version 6, thanks to its Material Design makeover. Every section looks cleaner and more spacious. Plus, there are now toolbars everywhere, along with language’s familiar floating button that gives you a way to quickly add new URL-password combinations.
The app’s upgrades aren’t just skin deep, though: if you have an Android device with a fingerprint sensor such as the Nexus 5X or 6P running Android Marshmallow, you can quickly unlock 1Password. Simply launch it and scan a finger to skip typing in your master password. Finally, version 6 comes with the beta version of 1Password for Teams. It’s a useful feature whenever you want to share log-ins with family or co-workers, so you can all access any account needed for the project you’re working on. You can even quickly add a team account by using the built-in QR code reader.
Password managers are a great way to ensure you’re using a unique password for all your online accounts. If you haven’t used one before and would like to give 1Password a try, note that version 6 will only work for Android 4.1 or newer. The app itself is free, but you’d have to pay for premium features, such as being able to add an unlimited number of log-ins and to edit existing ones.

Paint the town with Splash Cars on Android

Craneballs studios is following up their massively popular Overkill series with a quirky driving game. Splash Cars is something of a departure for this game development company, which is more well known for its action games like those in the Gun Master series. However, although Splash Cars starts out relaxing, upgrades and more challenging maps quickly escalate it into a twitch-happy whirlwind of frenetic, paint-splattered action.
You are… meh, it doesn’t really matter who you are. You’ve got a car, and you’re in a drab, boring neighborhood, and you’ve had enough of the pace of life around here. From the first tap, you slam your foot on the petal and never look back. As you cruise recklessly around the neighborhood, magic paint of some kind splashes in your wake, returning the grey landscape and pallid houses to their original vibrancy.

But, there are those who would consider such behavior dangerously non-conformist. Swing close enough to a cop, and they’ll engage in full pursuit. These officers of the law have been educated at the Los Santos Police Department Training Academy, so the only course of action they know to take when they witness someone committing a minor infraction is to ram their vehicles into the offender until it is completely destroyed.

What’s worse is that trundling dump trucks putter in and out of the map, spreading boring grey paint over your hard-won territory. However, if you can get close enough to splatter one of these foes, they’ll start seeing things your way and begin spreading your gospel of polychromatism for you.

The controls are deceptively simple. There is a turn left button and a turn right button. That’s it. No breaks, no slowing down – your character has his foot on the accelerator until the vehicle runs out of gas or is destroyed. Fortunately, there are jerry cans of gasoline scattered about most maps, giving you precious additional energy to continue your paint slinging. Collect coins and buy new vehicles and upgrades to face the challenges of increasingly dense and complex maps.

The game is free to play with some in-app purchases. If running from the cops while pouring paint from a moving vehicle sounds like your kind of party, click the button below to download it from the Google Play Store.

1Password just got a significant update

1Password is a fairly popular password manager that the Guardian called one of the best Android apps for 2014. However, development on the Android platform kind of went neglected for a little bit there. Now, however, developer AgileBits has released version 6 of the app, launching it into 2016 with updated design, interface, and features.
What you’ll notice immediately about 1Password after getting the update is that it no longer looks like an app that was created in the pre-Material Design era. Google’s papery aesthetic in now going full blast on the app, meaning you’ll be able to appreciate a more consistent visual experience moving between 1Password and the slew of apps taking cues from the Material Design philosophy.

The update is more than just aesthetics, however. Fingerprint support has been improved, and it now works with the the official 1Password keyboard. AgileBits is also playing around with a 1Password for Teams service that is currently in beta. They want this to be a unique way to selectively share information with co-workers, family members, or friends. Wi-Fi Sync has been optimized, an always-on toolbar while you’re in the app makes navigation easier, and they’ve added a floating button that lets you quickly and easily add new items.
You can read more about this update by checking out AgileBits’ official blog post regarding the update, and if you want to give 1Password a spin for yourself, click the button below to download it from the Google Play Store. If you’re 1Password user, let us know what your experience so far has been. If not, what password manager do you recommend? Tell us in the comments below!
