ICYMI: Ripples in Spacetime, brain jolts to learn and more

Today on In Case You Missed It: Researchers at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory confirmed Einstein’s theory that ripples in the fabric of spacetime do, in fact, exist. They spotted the gravitational waves made when two black holes collided.
Halo Neuroscience headphones might help you understand what that means, since the mild electrical signals strapped on your head are apparently helping US ski team members perform better in some early trials.
Scientists from the University of Zurich taught a UAV to ‘see’ and follow a hiking trail in the woods, with the hopeful goal of helping in search and rescue missions.
The must-see of the day is really the man who constructed a very Steampunk arm brace to allow him to continue working after a stroke. As always, please share any interesting science or tech videos, anytime! Just tweet us with the #ICYMI hashtag to @mskerryd.
NASA maps part of Pluto’s complex terrain

Pluto’s surface looks pretty textured even from afar, but you may still be surprised by how complex its terrain actually is. This new color-coded geological map illustrates that complexity more clearly. It covers 1,290 miles of the dwarf planet, including the left side of Pluto’s heart-shaped region and its surrounding areas. NASA has identified and labeled the texture and morphology of everything that falls within the rectangular map. The cracked, bluish part in the center, for instance, represents a nitrogen ice plain within Tombaugh Regio called Sputnik Planum.
Those purple clumps flanking its right side (your left) are mountain ranges, while the red area in the bottom left edge is a possible cryovolcano called Wright Mons. The dark brown strip on the left side beside the purple mountain ranges marks the beginning of the Cthulhu Regio, dotted by impact craters colored in yellow. As you can see below, NASA describes each location as accurately as possible, whether its rubbly, degraded, eroded or pitted.
The map was created from 12 photos captured by New Horizons’ Long Range Reconnaissance Imager, 48,000 miles away. They were taken almost two hours before the probe’s nearest approach on July 14th, 2015 at a resolution of around 1,050 feet per pixel. NASA is taking a closer look at those photos from last year to determine which part goes on top of which. That will give the agency a pretty good idea if formations are older or younger than the ones beside them and to ultimately conjure up a timeline that shows when each one appeared on Pluto’s surface.

Fan mashup of ‘Mario Kart’ and ‘Star Wars’ is a gaming dream
![]()
If you’re like me, you spent your youth imagining what it’d be like if your favorite fictional universes got together — heck, Aliens vs. Predator and Kingdom Hearts are practically kids’ dreams made real. Well, some fans weren’t willing to keep their fantasy locked in their heads. YouTube team Dark Pixel made Star Kart, a video mashup of Mario Kart and Star Wars that’s pretty much the blend you’d hope it would be. The project (which took a year to produce) has Mario, Yoshi and crew racing Star Wars ships across a galaxy far, far away, complete with cute touches: shells replace laser cannons, getting knocked out means leaving hyperspace… and of course there’s a Death Star trench race. Frankly, we wish Disney and Nintendo would find a way to make this a proper game, even if it’s just a Mario Kart 8 add-on.

I left my Nexus 7 for a younger model

Dear Nexus 7,
We need to talk. We’ve been together for nearly four years now and have had some good times, haven’t we? I mean, you were my first tablet. I’d never met any device like you before. You were gorgeous. I’m still not sure how you managed to slip that ample touch screen of yours into a Poetic slimline case, but you made it look effortless.
We were inseparable, you and I. You were my streaming-content remote, my internet radio and my guide through some of the kinkiest porn sites the web had to offer. We used to go everywhere together. Remember the trips to NYC and Las Vegas? Or the weekend getaways to our cabin in Tahoe? I didn’t even need internet access there, all I needed was you. Those were some of the happiest times of my life, and I’ll never forget them. But, baby, you’ve changed.
Somewhere along the way, we started to grow apart. You slowly became less and less responsive to my needs, you’d ignore my touch and sometimes freeze me out entirely. I thought that if I held your power button until you fell asleep, let you rest until the morning, you might forgive whatever I did to upset you. Once I even factory reset our relationship and tried to start over with a clean slate. But no matter how many times I tried to rebuild our relationship, no matter how well we got along for the few weeks after resets, you’d invariably shut me out again.
For the longest time, I stood by you, despite your increasingly cold demeanor. But it’s time to move on. For both our sakes. You see, I’ve met something new. It’s a Nexus, like you, just… a bit smaller and faster. Look, don’t take your frustrations out on the 6P. It isn’t as endowed as you are in the screen department, but with a fingerprint scanner, faster processor, better memory and cellular call capabilities, it does things I never imagined a device could do. That’s not your fault; you’re beautiful just the way you are.
I hate to use the cliche of “it’s not you, it’s me,” but this time it’s true. I’ve discovered there are things I want from my mobile device that you simply can’t provide. And it’s not like we’re never going to see each other again — you’ll still live in my computer bag, and I promise, every time I fly, you’ll be the one I download movies onto to watch during the flight. So please, if you ever loved me as much as I loved you, just try to be happy for me. I will always remember you as you were.
Sincerely,
AT

O2 tracks and sells what customers are doing on the Tube

If you’re with O2 and regularly use the London Underground, you should know that the network is trying to track your phone and pass that information on to advertisers. If that sounds like a huge invasion of privacy, well, in some ways it is — however, the silver lining is that all of the data is anonymised and aggregated before it’s visible to any marketing folk. O2’s owner Telefonica struck the deal with Exterion Media last summer, the latter of which owns every billboard on the subterranean transport system. It then came into effect on Thursday, monitoring customers’ journeys, app usage and browsing activity over Wi-Fi.
The idea is pretty simple. By gathering all of this information, Exterion Media can show advertisers the types of people that make particular journeys. Knowing that large swathes of fashion-conscious Instagram lovers stand on the platform near Covent Garden, for instance, could inspire ASOS or Urban Outfitters to take out an ad. Similarly, knowing when certain users descend on a station — Stratford is normally a place for shoppers, but the Olympic Park occasionally attracts sports fans — could help companies figure out when to debut a highly targeted poster.
O2 has 25 million customers and expects to track roughly one million journeys each day. If you’re worried about your privacy, there’s an obvious solution — switch off your phone’s Wi-Fi connection and do something else while you’re sitting on the Tube. Sure, you’ll have to wait a little longer to check Twitter or Facebook, but there’s always an alternative, like listening to some podcasts or ploughing through your Pocket queue.

Best Nexus 5X cases
It’s possible that your phone is among your most valuable possessions. So you need to protect it from drops, spills, and any other potential damage. The Nexus 5X has a plastic build, meaning it’s not quite as durable as other aluminum-built phones on the market; therefore, purchasing a case is a smart way to ensure the phone remains in good shape for its entire run with you.
The following are the best cases from top brands to keep your Nexus 5X protective while still looking good.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case
Spigen, a personal favorite accessory maker of mine, has a simple option for protecting the Nexus 5X while keeping its body visible. The back of this case offers you the more prominent visibility of the phone. Why? Because it’s an absolutely clear case. It costs around $14 and the hard material gives ideal protection to the Nexus 5X. If you want to show off your Nexus 5X but still want to protect it, this case from Spigen is easily the must-have.
