You can get the Nexus 9 for 40 percent off, but only today

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, HTC is offering the Nexus 9 at a deep discount. The US-only promotion, available until 11:59PM PT/2:59AM ET tonight, takes 40 percent off of Google’s flagship tablet. That includes the 16GB, 32GB and 32GB with LTE models, which are priced at $239, $287 and $359, respectively, until the deal ends. Now, if you decide to go for the cellular version, HTC will throw in a free Logitech Bluetooth keyboard for good measure. You’ll have to act fast, though, since supply for this Hot Deal is likely limited.

Obama’s last budget calls for better infrastructure, cybersecurity

With President Barack Obama’s final year in office comes one last, contentious dance with Congress over a $4.1 trillion dollar budget for 2017. According to the New York Times, some $3 trillion of the budget the president proposed has been earmarked for so-called “mandatory” spending, and will be funneled toward federal assistance programs and combating interest on the nation’s debt. The president is pushing to use that remaining trillion-or-so dollars to build a foundation for future work he thinks the country desperately needs.

President Obama, for instance, wants to spend $300 billion over the course of a decade to fund incentives for clean-energy vehicles and improve America’s transportation infrastructure — think mass transit and light rail lines, among other things. A hefty expenditure like that would normally see our tax withholdings inflate at least a bit, but the president’s plan to pay for it involves a $10 fee that oil companies would pay on every single barrel of oil they move.

The budget proposal also earmarked $19 billion to ramp up the nation’s cybersecurity efforts, which proved more than lacking when Chinese operatives breached the US Office of Personnel Management and exposed the personal information of over 21 million US government employees. (China maintains criminal hackers were to blame, not state-sponsored attackers.) Part of the proposed fix also involves spending $3.1 billion to upgrade the crucial — and in some cases, ancient — systems that form the backbone of the United States’ most important computer systems and networks. The White House is also widely expected to put out a call for its first Chief Information Security Officer as early as today, emphasizing the need for a strong, top-down vision of security that we’ve arguably needed for ages now.

Other juicy tidbits in this last budget proposal include $19 billion for NASA (down slightly from the $19.3 billion the spacefarers got last year), and $1.8 billion to better understand and combat the Zika virus.

HTC offering HUGE discount on Nexus 9 today only

Are you looking for a tablet for your Valentine? HTC is having a massive, limited-time sale to help you pick one up at a great price.

For today only you can pick up an HTC Nexus 9 for 40 percent off! This brings the cost down to be very competitive with even the best priced tablets. Here’s how all the prices break down:

  • 16 GB WiFi – $239
  • 32 GB Wifi – $287
  • 32 GB Wifi + LTE – $359

The 16 GB Wifi version has been going in and out of stock (probably due to this sale), so you may want to save yourself some time and pick up the 32 GB version if it fits into your budget.

But wait, there’s more

In addition to the 40 percent discount, you’ll receive a Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard when you purchase the 32 GB Wifi + LTE version of the Nexus 9. This is not the same Folio Keyboard offered by HTC that showed up in some advertisements last year.

HTC is also discounting all other accessories at 40 percent. You can grab the HTC Folio Keyboard Case for the Nexus 9 for $77 (it’s cheaper on Amazon), Dot View Ice for the HTC One M9 for $29.99, or the HTC Pro Studio Earphones for $47.99, among other deals.

Verizon offering special half season deal for NBA League Pass

go90_nba_league_pass

Through their Go90 platform, Verizon is making available a special deal for the NBA League Pass for the second half of the season. To help entice potential NBA fans to sign up for the Go90 service, Verizon is also making some free NBA previews available to Go90 subscribers. You may recall that last fall Verizon inked a deal with the NBA to become the exclusive service provider for the NBA and several related properties like the WNBA. Making games available via the Go90 service was big part of the new partnership.

If you are interested in buying a subscription to the NBA League Pass for the second half of the season on Go90, it will only set you back $50 and lasts through the remainder of the regular season. If you are not certain about jumping on board with the deal, Go90 users can watch up to 5 NBA games any time until the end of the regular season. Verizon, G090 and the NBA are also making some preview weekends available. Upcoming dates for these weekends include February 20th and 21st and then again on March 5th and 6th. During these weekends users can access all games available on the NBA League Pass. One benefit of the preview weekends is that the games watched on those dates will not count against the five-game preview option.

If you are a Verizon customer, the carrier is also shifting the business model for Go90 slightly so that video streaming through that service will not count against users’ data limits if they are on a post-paid plan.

To take advantage of the new deal, hit the source link for more information on the Go90 app and to sign up for the NBA League Pass.

Ad blocking extension for Samsung’s internet browser returns to Play Store

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_bottom_left_corner_TAAt the start of the month, Samsung opened up their built-in web browser to ad-blocking extensions. Adblock Fast jumped at the chance and quickly launched on the Play Store to help Samsung users block ads on the web, but it was yanked from Google’s storefront almost as quickly as it launched.

Now, barely a week later, Adblock Fast is back on the Play Store, hopefully for good this time. Google reversed their decision after the developer sent an appeal, and it’s currently been updated to version 1.1 with a few tweaks to get new users started.

No details have been released on exactly why Google pulled it the first time or why it was reinstated, so there’s still plenty of room for speculation.

[Deal] HTC takes 40% off the Nexus 9 and throws in a free keyboard

nexus_9_display_bottom_TA

The Nexus 9, which was launched in late 2014, is still being sold as Google has positioned the Pixel C as a high-end tablet belonging to another line that is just getting started. So, for people wanting an premium-yet-affordable tablet with stock Android, the Nexus 9 remains the most logical choice (unless you’re a gamer).

When the tablet hit the market, pricing started at $399 for a base model with 16GB of internal storage. And the 32GB model raised the price up to $479. Need a LTE signal for use away from a WiFi connection? The LTE model that comes with 32GB of internal storage is priced at $599. Today, though, you can save big on any model of the Nexus 9. Through HTC’s weekly Hot Deals promotion, the Nexus 9 has a 40% discount and a free Logitech keyboard is being included if you get the LTE model.

man_using_nexus_9

Google and HTC’s Nexus 9 features an 8.9-inch LPS LCD display, NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor with 2GB of RAM, 8MP / 1.6MP cameras, and dual front-facing BoomSound stereo speakers. And, at its core, the tablet has Android 6.0 Marshmallow along with all of the latest security patches pushed monthly by Google.

nexus_9_deal_020916

Here’s the pricing breakdown:

  • 16GB WiFi-only (Indigo Black, Lunar White): $239.40
  • 32GB WiFi-only (Indigo Black, Lunar White): $287.40
  • 32GB LTE (Indigo Black): $359.40 w/ free Logitech keyboard

It seems that, if you’re interested, get over to HTC’s website right away and order the tablet because units are already selling out. The 16GB WiFi-only models are completely out of stock; therefore, people are going to be rushing to the next storage size.

French privacy agency demands changes from Facebook

facebook security

France’s data protection agency, the Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertes (CNIL), has issued an order demanding changes in the way Facebook operates the social media site in France. CNIL is demanding Facebook stop tracking non-members without consent who visit the site and that they stop transferring some personal data back to the U.S. CNIL is also demanding Facebook implement stronger password complexity rules. The demands follow similar action taken last year in Belgium.

Facebook currently tracks any visitor to the web site through the use of cookies, even people who are not Facebook account holders. The type of cookie that Facebook uses can persist for up to two years. In Belgium, in response to this problem, Facebook changed their site to require users to log on in order to view any pages.

To get logged on, French users may have to update their passwords if they are currently using one that is six or seven characters in length. The CNIL is demanding Facebook bump their password complexity rules up to require at least eight characters.

Finally, CNIL informed Facebook that they must stop transferring personal data back to the U.S. due to the lack of a Safe Harbour agreement being in place. The old agreement between the EU and the US was ruled invalid in October 2015 and a new agreement, while drafted, has not been adopted. Facebook contends their transfer of personal data is governed by other legal contracts and they were not operating pursuant to the Safe Harbour agreement.

CNIL has given Facebook three months to comply with these new requirements or face potential fines. A Facebook spokesperson says the social media company looks “forward to engaging with the CNIL to respond to their concerns.”

Intelligent Energy plans to develop hydrogen-based fuel cell for smartphones

intelligent_energy_logo_metal

Intelligent Energy Holdings Plc, a firm located in the U.K. that specializes in fuel-cell technology, has announced they have entered into an agreement with a smartphone manufacturer to develop a fuel cell small enough to fit inside a smartphone. Sources have not named the smartphone manufacturer, describing in only as an “emerging” producer. Intelligent Energy says the smartphone manufacturer is investing $7.6 million USD in the project that could result in a power source capable of powering a smartphone for a whole week between charges.

Intelligent Energy Consumer Electronics division acting managing director Julian Hughes says,

“Embedding fuel-cell technology into portable devices provides a solution to the current dilemma of battery life. With consumers demanding more and more from their phones, battery innovation has not kept up.”

Besides providing the “killer app” of battery life that could last seven days, the fuel cell technology is cleaner than many others as it converts hydrogen into electricity with only water vapor as a byproduct. Intelligent Energy has already achieved success in deploying similar technology into London’s black cabs to establish a fleet of “zero emission” taxis. They are currently working with Boeing Co. to develop the first manned aircraft powered solely by fuel cells. The company is also working to develop backup power systems for telecom towers in India and hydrogen-powered drones.

Intelligent Energy has more than 1,000 patents in their portfolio and over 25 years of experience in the field to backup their efforts on this latest project. CEO Henri Winand says the new solution could be ready within a couple years if things go according to plan. The smartphone fuel cell was already in development for possible use by people living in areas without access to a traditional power grid. The investment and partnership will help accelerate development and possibly bring it to a more mainstream audience.

Norway to Force Accused Criminal to Unlock His iPhone With Touch ID

Norwegian police will force a 27-year-old man accused of drug possession to unlock his iPhone with Touch ID, according to local website Bergensavisen [Google Translate]. The police believe the confiscated smartphone may contain evidence about where he obtained the illegal substance.

iPhone-6s-Touch-ID

The man, who reportedly admitted he was culpable, has refused to unlock his iPhone for police since being charged, but the Nordhordland District Court’s recent verdict allows Norwegian police to force the accused’s thumb on to his Touch ID-secured iPhone. Local police will also analyze his phone call and data history.

It remains unclear if Norwegian police are aware that Touch ID requires a passcode as supplemental verification after 48 hours of disuse, a restart, or three failed fingerprint entry attempts. The accused was arrested on January 25, so it may be impossible for authorities to unlock his iPhone with Touch ID without taking additional measures.

In the U.S., a Virginia court ruled that fingerprints, unlike passwords and passcodes, are not protected by the Fifth Amendment. In his ruling, Judge Steven C. Frucci opined that “giving police a fingerprint is akin to providing a DNA or handwriting sample or an actual key,” which is permitted under federal law.
