BBC iPlayer for iOS Adds Handoff Support and Spotlight Search
BBC’s iPlayer app has been updated for iOS users in the UK today, bringing added support for Spotlight search and Apple’s Handoff feature.
Users of the app can now directly search for TV programs from their home screen by activating Spotlight search with a swipe down gesture, while the addition of Handoff support enables viewers to pick up where they left off when switching to another iOS device.

The update also patches a bug that led to the app crashing on launch for some users, and adds a full catalog of iPlayer programs to the channel page via the A-Z option.
The UK broadcaster recently brought its iPlayer app to Apple TV after initially stating it had no plans to make the service available on the platform.
BBC iPlayer is a free download for users in the UK. [Direct Link]

Wilson’s smart football brings the big game to the backyard

Wilson, which released a smart basketball last year, is expanding its connected sporting goods repertoire to the realm of football. The Wilson X Connected Football, as it’s called, is embedded with sensors that can measure stats like distance, speed, spiral efficiency and spin rate. It’s smart enough to know if it’s caught or dropped and can transmit said information to a companion app via Bluetooth. In conjunction with the Super Bowl this Sunday, Wilson representatives dropped by the Engadget office in San Francisco to show off what it can do. The purpose of such a ball? According to Wilson, it’s to bring video games to the backyard.
But before we get into that, here are a few notes about the ball itself. By all appearances, the Wilson X looks and feels like the real deal. There is no obvious indication that it has sensors in it aside from the Wilson X logo emblazoned on its surface. Bob Thurman, Wilson’s VP of Innovation, tells me that inside the ball is an accelerometer, a processor, a Bluetooth radio and a very low power battery that should last about two years with average use. The battery doesn’t seem to be replaceable, but Wilson has yet to finalize the hardware.
In order to pair the ball with the phone, you have to very deliberately flip the ball upside down from one tip to the other. Otherwise, the ball will go to sleep after a period of non-use. Thurman tells me that just jostling the ball around in a bag won’t activate it, so you can be rest assured it won’t turn itself on accidentally.

“This is not just for players,” said Kevin Murphy, Wilson’s General Manager of American football. “It’s for everyone.” While Wilson has a long tradition in the sport — it makes the official NFL ball and is seen as the industry standard as far as the category is concerned — it wanted the Wilson X to be more than just a fancy ball for professionals. The Wilson X, Murphy tells me, is about adding joy to the game.
“We want to get kids more active,” said Thurman. “We’re competing against video games. That started our whole line of thinking about the Wilson X and what we can do with it.”
The idea here is that with the Wilson X, you’re not just throwing the ball around the field. Because it’s connected to your phone, you can make the experience more interactive. For example, you can compare stats with your friends and compete against one other to see who has the better score.
After throwing it a few times, I saw that the app captured stats like spiral efficiency and velocity and distilled that into an overall “WX Rating,” which you can use to see where you rank on a leaderboard. Thurman says that since you can upload this data to the cloud, you can potentially use it to not only challenge your immediate friends, but also buddies from around the world.

And this is just the beginning. Thurman tells me that eventually, they want apps that can let you reenact actual gameplay, score virtual touchdowns or get your workout on with football-inspired drills. “It unlocks all kinds of applications,” said Thurman. “It’s kind of a game console, if you will.”
Indeed, Wilson is already working on more prosumer-level apps that will provide a richer set of data — say, the quality of the throw — for real athletes to improve their game. But its priority right now is simply the consumer version.
“We want everyone to feel how fun it is to play ball,” said Thurman. “This thing will build a bridge among all people, regardless your level of skill.”
The Wilson X Connected Football should be available in stores later this fall. As for how much it’ll cost, well, that’s yet to be determined. But seeing as Wilson’s Connected Basketball retails for close to $200, we’re guessing it’s not going to be cheap. That’s potentially a lot of money for a “smart football” that you might have to replace every two years. Following the release of the Android 6.0 to the unlocked G4 sold across Europe, in South Korea, on US Cellular and on Canada’s Telus and Rogers, LG has now made Marshmallow available on the T-Mobile LG G4 (H811) via its PC synchronization software LG Bridge.
Many users have reported being able to update their LG G4 to Marshmallow by connecting their phone via USB to PC and checking for an update manually. Note that an over the air (OTA) update is not yet available and T-Mobile’s support page for the G4 doesn’t yet mention yet the availability of the update.
As with other recent LG devices getting the Marshmallow upgrade, you’re looking at improvements for Knock Code, the implementation of the new app permissions model, a redesigned Silent Mode, Peek mode, and some visual changes.
If you’re into rooting and ROM-ing, the folks over at XDA-Developers already have you covered with a fully stock ROM available for flashing, as well as the necessary rooting methods.
Thanks, Brooke!
Destiny’s new ‘Damage Referee’ will punish laggy players

Destiny is in a state of limbo right now as Bungie struggles with the pressures of developing a sequel while keeping existing gamers entertained. Many Year One players have downed tools altogether, but for those who have stuck around and kept Crucible arenas well populated, things have slowly started to improve. With its February update, Bungie is using that momentum to further balance online skirmishes with its new “Damage Referee.” It’s a new system designed shift power to Guardians with reliable connections and punish those who don’t.
Don’t worry, your PvP battles won’t soon be adjudicated by a virtual official in a black and white striped shirt. Instead, Bungie will implement new checks that can identify when a player is manipulating their connection to juice their kill stats or is unfairly profiting from poor connectivity. Guardians with a solid ping may notice that their weapons feel more reliable, kills are recognized quicker and slower players become less frustrating to fight.
Gamers with slower connections, on the other hand, may lose duels more often, even if they feel they shot first or it looked like they evaded a firestorm just in time. The colored connection indicators will still show the connection statuses of fireteam members, but the Damage Referee will now silently shift the balance of play in the favor of those with green bars.
The February update will also include another major change: the removal of Special ammo from some game types. In a bid to reduce instances where an opponent can sprint to a clearing and headshot a freshly spawned Guardian, Bungie will require players in all 3v3 playlists to pick up ammo from a Special crate before unleashing hell with their sniper rifle or shotgun.
When the update drops on February 9th, players will gain access to the Crimson Days event. Like the Festival of the Lost, this Valentine’s Day instance will introduce new game modes as well as new emblems, shaders and emotes for Guardians to equip. That might not be enough for some gamers, who prefer big DLC updates, but it may keep those in for the long haul happy until the next big instalment rolls out to consoles.

Google now shows app videos in the main Play Store screen

Google is rolling out a small, but significant change to its app store. Video trailers for select apps are now showing in the main screen of the Play Store.
Until now, the main app screen of the Play Store was home to a list of app cards grouped in categories like Personalization apps or New & updated games, or customized sections for specific app categories like Beautify Your Screen.
A new type of card is now rolling out to many users, one that promotes certain apps through videos. Called Check out this video, the card shows the video you would normally see by going to the app install screen, along the app name, app icon, and star score. There’s also an overflow menu that contains the options to install the promoted app or add it to your wishlist, as well as the option to dismiss the card.
It’s not clear how Google selects the apps it promotes via this widget, but it’s be based on your interests. One card I saw mentioned that the app in the video is popular with users who also installed IF by IFTTT.
This is, in the larger scheme of things, a rather small change for users, but for app developers, it’s increasingly important to have an engaging, professional presentation video for their apps and games.

It looks like a server-side switch, so no need to update to get this new feature. Let us know if you spotted it!
This app gives you a chance to win free app promo codes
![]()
You know how Google finally introduced app promo codes a little while back? Well there’s now a nice looking new app that gives you a daily opportunity to win a free promo code for a premium Android app. The list is curated too, so the apps you can get for free are all of a high quality.
Simply install the Promo Codes app via the install button below to see the featured app of the day and hit the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button to see if you win. If you do, you’ll get a promo code which you can enter in the Redeem section of the Play Store’s nav drawer. If you don’t win you will be booted to the featured app’s normal Play Store listing with a “better luck tomorrow” message.

You can only try your luck for a promo code once per day and there’s currently no way to get around the featured app: if you aren’t interested in it or already have it installed you’re out of luck. But the premium apps already participating include Nova Launcher, Today Calendar Pro, Franco Kernel Updater, Relay for Reddit, Focus, Impressions, Shuttle, Twee, Progression and many others with more being added daily.
If one opportunity per day isn’t enough for you, you can also follow the new Twitter account that goes with the app, @android_promos, which will auto-post more promo codes each day.
8,500-mAh of power is worth turning your Note 5 into a small brick
The term “brick” is thrown around liberally when talking about devices that are bulkier than average, but in the case of the ZeroLemon’s newest extended batteries for the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the term is quite appropriate.
ZeroLemon, a brand known for its high capacity extended batteries, has outdone itself with the 8,500-mAh extended batteries for Samsung’s most recent flagships.
Don’t miss:
The batteries give you almost three times more power, on top of the built-in 3,000-mAh batteries inside the Note 5 and Edge S6 Plus, at the cost of three times the thickness.
At 21.1mm in thickness and 218 grams in weight (without the phone), you probably won’t want to use ZeroLemon’s extended batteries every day. However, if you’re a power user that must plow through some heavy tasks or you need your phone charged up for extended periods, this is an excellent solution. 11,500 mAh of power in total could keep you running for almost a week with light usage!
Features of the device include pass-through QC 2.0 charging for the phone, LED indicators for power levels, and a manual switch that lets you let the juice trickle in exactly when you want it.
The ZeroLemon 8,500 mAh extended batteries just launched on Amazon and they are available at the introductory price of $59.99.

Scientists want to sequence the genomes of all known kakapo

Scientists want to sequence the genomes of all known kakapo, which shouldn’t be that hard — the animal is critically endangered, and it’s believed that there are only 125 individuals left. Kakapos are the heaviest and the only flightless parrot species in the world. These rotund, funny-looking birds endemic to New Zealand are nocturnal and live on the ground, eating plants, fruits and seeds. The team has launched this project to help the species’ numbers bounce back. It will give scientists info on their fertility and help them figure out if the animals are susceptible to particular diseases. It’ll also prevent the team from mating two closely related individuals, as kakapos are already inbred and have little genetic diversity.
One female bird’s genome has already been sequenced at Duke University, and the group is already collecting DNA from 40 other animals. Those will be completely sequenced by March by New Zealand Genomics Ltd. at the University of Otago. However, the whole project will cost them $100,000, and they’re now asking people for help. They’re trying to raise $45,000 via Experiment, a crowdfunding website for scientific research. If the scientists reach their goal, an entire animal population’s genome will be sequenced for the first time ever, according to Radio New Zealand National.
Kakapos have long life expectancy averaging 95 years, mating every three to five. Their population was decimated when European and Polynesian colonizers brought predators with them, since living on the ground made them vulnerable. They were relocated to predator-free islands when conservation efforts started, but they clearly need a bit more help to grow their numbers.

iPlayer now lets you search shows from your iOS home screen

Boot up your iPhone or iPad today and you’ll notice a fresh BBC iPlayer update in the UK App Store. The latest version adds support for Spotlight search, meaning you can swipe down from the top of your home screen and type in favourites like Doctor Who, Dickensian or Match of the Day. Available episodes should appear right in the feed, making it easier to kick back with some on-demand video. In addition, the BBC has enabled Apple’s Handoff feature today, making it easier to pause a programme on one device and pick it up again immediately on another. Nifty.
