Serial adds new episodes as the season 1 case continues

Still wondering what happened to Adnan Syed after the first season of Serial wrapped? Well, we’re about to get an update. Syed is back in court this week as his lawyers present new evidence in an attempt to get his conviction overturned. To keep us informed on the latest happenings, host Sarah Koenig and producer Dana Chivvis are set to discuss this week’s proceedings in three new episodes. The first update is already posted as the Syed’s first appearance was yesterday.
If you’re still unfamiliar with the popular podcast, Serial told the story of Syed’s case during it’s first season. When he was a 17-year-old high school senior, he was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend. He was found guilty mostly due to the testimony of his friend Jay, who claimed he helped bury the body. Throughout the whole ordeal, Syed consistently said he wasn’t involved. Perhaps this week we’ll finally find out if his lawyers will get another chance to prove it.

Foxconn likely to become Sharp’s new owner

Foxconn is now the clear favorite to buy Sharp after offering $5.5 billion for the moribund electronics firm. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Foxconn’s bid was so large that it’s now entering “exclusive talks” to seal the deal. Previously, the firm was running a close-second to INCJ, an investment fund backed by the Japanese government. It was hoped that INCJ would win in order to keep one of Japan’s oldest electronics firms out of the hands of foreign owners. Unfortunately, it’s believed that the fund offered around $2.5 billion for the loss-making maker of displays, home entertainment equipment and appliances.
If Bloomberg is to be believed, Foxconn chief Terry Gou is looking to become a tech CEO in his own right, rather than a behind-the-scenes player. As it stands, Foxconn is the world’s most prominent electronics manufacturer, producing devices for Apple, Microsoft, Sony and Amazon amongst others. Buying Sharp not only gives Gou a customer-facing brand, but also hands him expertise in display manufacturing that he currently doesn’t have. Given how much money and time is thrown at the mobile screen business, that could become a huge deal further down the line.
Sony will skip Android 5.1 and roll out a direct Marshmallow update for the Xperia M4 Aqua
If you cast your mind back to June 2015, you may recall that Sony detailed a list of devices scheduled to receive the Android 5.1 update. Sadly for Xperia M4 Aqua owners, the handset appeared to be missing from the lineup. However, in October, a leaked roadmap surfaced disclosing that the M4 Aqua would, instead, make a leap directly from Android 5.0 to Android 6.0, but poor credibility of the source guaranteed we took the information with a hefty pinch of salt. Today, though, the Japanese company confirmed that it will be doing just that.
While responding to a query on Twitter earlier, Sony revealed that it will skip the Android 5.1 update for the Xperia M4 Aqua and will push out a direct upgrade to Marshmallow. Unfortunately, the firm failed to provide an estimated timeframe for the rollout, but at least we know it’s on the way. If Sony’s track record for mid-range updates is any indication, we presume that it may start making the rounds sometime in May.
@KarCerKK Regarding your question the Xperia M4 Aqua will skip Android 5.1 and will receive Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).

So there you have it, folks. Sony has confirmed that it will make the jump from Android 5.0 to Android 6.0 on the Xperia M4 Aqua. Android Wear gets some hands-free upgrades
The Android developers with Google announced some updates they are getting ready to roll out to devices running the Android Wear platform. The focus of the updates is on improving the hands-free operation of devices like smartwatches to help people for those times when their hands are full. The updates will also bring support for speakers in devices that have them present.
Android Wear already had some limited support for gestures, but that is being expanded with the latest update. Along with the flicking action used to scroll through cards, users will now have options available to push to expand a card, lift to open up the list of apps, or shake to return to the home screen. For users who make use of the gestures, this will mean less tapping on the screen.
Android Wear is getting expanded support for alternative platforms that can be used to send messages using voice commands. Apps like Google Hangouts, Nextplus, Telegram, Viber, WeChat and WhatsApp can all be launched using voice commands. Users will just have to issue an “OK Google…” command like “Send a WhatsApp message to Nathan: I’ll be right there.”
Finally, for owners of the Huawei Watch or the ASUS ZenWatch 2 that have speakers built-in just waiting for their purpose, Android Wear will now support those speakers. That means users can do things like make or take phone calls using their watch and just speaking into it Dick Tracy-style assuming their watch has a current Bluetooth connection to their phone. Audio and video messages can also be listened to on the watch using apps like Glide.
The developers indicate these updates will be rolling out to all Android Wear watches over the next few weeks with some devices seeing the updates starting as soon as today.

Aprenda inglés / learn Spanish Nglish Translator
A fun fact about me is that I’m bilingual. I spent a couple of years tromping through the jungles of El Salvador and in the process learned Spanish. That was a little over 15 years ago, and because I live in Arizona I have had ample opportunity to keep up with and even improve my Spanish vocabulary. It is from this perspective that I write my review.
Una cosa que no todos saben es que soy bilingüe. Pase un par de años en las selvas de El Salvador y en el proceso aprendí hablar español. Eso fue un poco mas de 15 años pasados, pero por vivir en Arizona he tenido mucha oportunidad de seguir practicando el Español. Es de ese perspectivo que escribo esta revisión.
Nglish Translator overview / visión general
Nglish Translator is a free, but ad supported, Spanish to English and English to Spanish translator app published in conjunction with Merriam-Webster. You can remove the ads through a one-time payment of $7.90.
Nglish translator es un aplicación de traducir gratis, pero es apoyado por anuncios. Se traduce Español a Inglés e Inglés a Español y es publicado junto con Merriam-Webster. Puedes quitar los anuncios por medio de un solo pago de $7.90.
The app is primarily meant for Spanish speakers to learn English, but it can be used for English speakers to learn Spanish as well. However, it works better the other way around.
La aplicación es principalmente para personas que hablan Español para aprender Inglés, pero puede ser usado también de las personas que hablan Inglés para aprender Español, pero funciona mejor de la otra manera.
The app features a series of quizzes designed to help you learn the various parts of the English language. Quizzes include prepositions, articles, phrasal verbs, and verb tenses.
La aplicación tiene una serie de pruebas diseñado para ayudarle aprender las varias partes del idioma Inglés. Las pruebas incluyen preposiciones, artículos, verbos frasales, y tiempos verbales.
There are also vocabulary games that range in difficulty from a basic level to a superior level. The superior level features words that are less commonly used in English. I only scored eight out of ten at my best and five out of ten at my worst.
También hay juegos de vocabulario que varían en dificultad desde un nivel básico hasto un nivel superior. El nivel superior tiene palabras usados en Inglés que son menos común. Aún yo nomas logré ocho de diez puntos a mi mejor y cinco de diez puntos a mi peor.
Lastly, you can save words to review later as well as your previous translations and vocabulary mistakes.
Finalmente, puedes guardar palabras para revisar en otro tiempo, tal como sus traducciones anteriores y errores de vocabulario.
Nglish Translator setup / preparación
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The only setup required is to download and install the app from the Google Play store. There are no accounts or sign ups needed.
La única preparación que se requiere es de bajar e instalar la aplicación de la tienda Google Play. No hay cuentas o necesidad de registrar.
Nglish Translator usage / uso
I found that most of the translations that Nglish Translator offered up were mostly correct. Of course, English and Spanish don’t always have exact translations, for example, Bart Simpson’s famous catch phrase from the 90’s: “Don’t have a cow, man” translates to the equivalent of “We don’t have a cow, man”. Unique phrases and slang words are Nglish Translator’s biggest struggle.
Encontré que la mayoría de las traducciones de Ngish Translator estaban correctos. Claro, las traducciones exactos de Inglés y Español no siempre tienen los mismos entendidos. Por ejemplo el eslogan de Bart Simpson en las 90’s: “Don’t have a cow, man” se traduce exactamente a “No tenemos una vaca, hombre,” pero el sentido es más como “Cálmate.” Frases únicas y palabras modismos son los problemas mas grande de Nglish Translator.
Where Nglish Translator excels is translations that are straightforward. The quizzes and vocabulary games were also very enjoyable, but if you are trying to learn Spanish from English, then you’ll need to have a basic understanding of the language in order to fully take advantage of the app’s potential.
Las traducciones que son más directos y menos de modismos es donde Nglish Translator excedece. Las pruebas y juegos de vocabulario también eran muy agradables, pero si tu intención es aprender Español de Inglés entonces necesitarás un entendimiento básico del idioma para poder maximizar el potencial de la aplicación.
One thing that I would like to see implemented is an account system where your progress is saved in the cloud and accessible from other devices.
Una cosa que me gustaría ver es un sistema de cuentas en donde su progreso es grabado en la nube y es accesible en otros dispositivos.
4 out of 5 stars
If you are using this app for translation purposes only, then I would recommend that you stick with a web-based service like Google Translate. If you are an English speaker looking to learn Spanish, then something like Duolingo may work better for you. If you want an app that does both Nglish translator is a great option.
Si estás usando la aplicación no mas para traducir, entonces recomendaría que quedas usando un servicio basado en la red como el Google Translate. Si eres alguien que habla Inglés y quieres aprender el Español entonces algo como Duolingo seria mejor. Si quieres una aplicación que hace los dos, entonces Nglish Translator es una opción buenísima.
The quizzes and vocabulary games make things fun, but they start from the assumption that you already know some words. Overall I think it’s a good option and definitely worth checking out.
Sus pruebas y juegos vocabularios hacen las cosas más divertidas, pero empiezan desde la suposición que ya sabes unas palabras. Sobre todo pienso que es una buena opción y vale la pena probarlo.

Iowa GOP website exposes voter records for 2 million people

The Iowa caucuses may be over, the state’s Republican party still has its hands full. Wall Street Journal reports that the website for the Republican Party of Iowa had a security flaw that exposed voter information for around 2 million people. Names, phone numbers, addresses, birth dates, party affiliations and voter records for registered Republicans, Democrats and Independents were all part of an unencrypted database left open on the site. Voter records don’t list who someone voted for, only if they voted. However, the leaving personal details out for the taking is certainly troubling.
An Iowa caucus attendee discovered the security flaw while searching for locations to visit before telling WSJ about the issue. In response to the news outlet’s query, the Iowa GOP pulled the database from its website. Voter records are usually available from the Secretary of State as public info for a fee of $1,500 to $1,800, but law requires the info they contain to only be used for political reasons. In this case, the person who found the database did so by looking at the source code for the caucus location directory. In other words, something anyone using a web browser can choose to do.

Three’s new pay-as-you-go SIM offers 200MB free data each month

This week, Three added a new pay-as-you-go SIM tariff to its existing contract-free options, and it comes with a rather alluring perk. The Data Reward SIM costs £10 and includes 1GB of data to make use of during your first month, but that’s not the interesting part. Provided you register the SIM at three.co.uk/freedata, you’ll receive 200MB of data every month for absolutely nothing, and better yet, you don’t even need to top it up to keep claiming that free allowance.
You can purchase additional data bundles from Three, of course, or pay only for what you use, with rates starting at 1p per megabyte. And even if you stick within your free monthly allowance, you can still use the data in any of the 18 countries covered by Three’s Feel At Home perk, including the US and Australia. While the SIM is primarily aimed at data-only devices like tablets and such, you can plug it into a phone and make calls from 3p from minute, or send texts from 2p per message.
If any of this sounds eerily familiar, it’s because the new Data Reward tariff is almost identical to FreedomPop’s UK offering. The mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which coincidentally (or not) uses Three’s network, has built its entire business on providing a free, barebones service, with overage charges and paid value-added features keeping it afloat. FreedomPop’s Basic 200 plan includes 200 minutes, 200 texts and 200MB of data free each month, and the provider recently launched a new roaming SIM that focuses on free data you can use abroad.

Instagram introduces 60-second video ads

Instagram’s toolset is beginning to diverge for users and advertisers. Since September businesses have been able to upload 30-second video ads — double the length available to regular users — and starting this week that limit is being increased to a minute. Warner Bros. and T-Mobile are among the first brands to utilize the extra time, injecting extended film trailers and Drake-centric Superbowl ads into people’s feeds. Neither are particularly innovative, but it’s notable that the extra time makes them feel more like traditional advertising and less like shareable, social snippets.
For Instagram, this is an obvious move to further monetize its popular photo and video-sharing platform. The way the company handles ads isn’t as intrusive as something like YouTube — as a user, you don’t have to wait to scroll past and see what your followers have been posting — but the nature of the feed means it’s still hard to ignore them completely. That, combined with its 400 million users, makes Instagram an attractive place for companies to spend their ad dollars. For normals, however, it means the service might feel just a little more commercialized than before.
