ICYMI: An accident impeding big rig, hoverbikes and more

ICYMI: A See-Through Big Rig, Legit Hoverbikes and More

Today on In Case You Missed It: The hoverbike of your Star Wars dreams is actually being built but sad faces all around, it’s being made for the U.S. Department of Defense before you suckers get to try it out; too many car accidents in Argentina inspired Samsung to make a digital display on the back of semi trucks to show other cars what’s happening on the roadway with front-facing cameras; and researchers built a boat that gives lower fuel consumption based on a design change that mimics a part of a whale’s tail.

Important side note we found while googling this story: Avoid ever getting this close to a real whale’s tail.

From the cutting room floor: We really wanted to bring you the story of this sneaky beer storage in the great outdoors, unfortunately we could not explain how it was done to our satisfaction. We’re also left annoyed for and with the guy that proudly shows it off, since now every out-law and crap neighbor he has knows where the spare beer is too. Dude. You blew it.

Let the team at Engadget know about any interesting stories or videos that you stumble across by using the #ICYMI hashtag @engadget or @mskerryd.

Videophone lets kids call Grandma but not surf the web

Want to encourage your kids to stay in touch with family, but don’t trust them with a smartphone? A product called the ILY family phone from startup Insensi may do the trick. It’s designed to help young ‘uns place video phone calls to anyone else who also has either an ILY or the iOS or Android app. Calling couldn’t be simpler — they just tap the recipient’s picture on the main page of the color touchscreen. Video and voice calls can be made over the internet via your WiFi network, or you can place regular phone calls by plugging it into your landline.

Kids can even send pictures or create them with an included app, but there’s no browser or other way to access the internet. And that simplicity is the point — it’s intended to give kids a way to call without exposing them to the dangers of the wider web. We don’t have any specs yet, but if the $200 price tag doesn’t give you pause, pre-orders are opening soon, with shipping expected by this fall.

Buick and GMC vehicles will support Android Auto and CarPlay

2016 Buick Regal

If you prefer to drive big honking Buick sedans and GMC trucks, you won’t have to give up a phone-savvy infotainment system for the privilege. Both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are coming to the Buick and GMC lineups, starting with the 2016 model year. CarPlay will arrive first, beginning with Buick’s LaCrosse and Regal as well as GMC’s Canyon, Sierra and Yukon. The Android option will show up some time later in the model year. Between this and similar moves from Cadillac and Chevy, you won’t have to be fussy about your choice of cars or smartphones — so long as you like GM’s brands in the first place, you’ll be taken care of.

Todoist’s Android update makes it easier to stay organized

Todoist may be one of many to-do list apps available for your mobile device, but it’s certainly a capable option. Today, the company announced a major redesign for its Android software that adds in features the iOS version received back in the spring. This means that rather than typing a reminder and having to tap a few different menu options to add a due date, assign to a project and more, you can just input all the information in the main task field. Once you do so, Todoist will sort out all of the info for you, right down to the necessary tags. In fact, the company says that users “can input almost any combination of details whatsoever into Todoist, and the app will know exactly what to do with it.” It’s a feature that should help you spend less time organizing and more time getting stuff done.

The ability to add start and end dates for a task was new to iOS a few months back too, and now it’s arriving on the Android version. Other new features include easily adding contributors when creating a task, creating sub tasks with a swipe and swiping left to schedule a due date for an item. In addition to all of the new productivity tools, the app got its Material Design overhaul as well, and now it looks just as good as all of the other apps that have already been updated with Google’s aesthetics. Yes, it’s a bit late to the Material Design party, but the company says new version of the Android app isn’t just a fresh coast of paint, it’s a complete overhaul. Was it worth the wait? There’s a video down below that’ll allow you to be the judge of that.

Google lets you hide unwanted web notifications

When you launch a Google service like YouTube or Gmail on the web, there’s always a little bell icon in the corner hiding a bundle of notifications. For many people, this feed is a complete mess and full of alerts for services they rarely use. Well, now Google is making it a little easier to focus its notifications on the tools that really matter to you. As Android Police notes, it’s now possible to hit the settings cog and toggle alerts for Google+, Photos and YouTube individually. Never use Google’s social network? Now you can remain blissfully ignorant whenever someone adds you to a circle or gives your post a +1. Likewise, if you only care about knowing when people have replied to your YouTube comments, it’s now much easier to keep those notifications front and center. At the moment only a handful of Google services are supported, but if enough people start using it, we suspect it’ll only be a matter of time before the company bundles in all of its web properties.

John Lewis starts selling smartphones

Upmarket retailer John Lewis has added a new product category to its electricals section today, as it starts selling smartphones for the first time. A curated selection of top handsets from the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC, Motorola and Microsoft are available online right now, all unlocked. SIM-free iPhones will be added to the roster in early July, when they’ll also begin to be stocked at John Lewis’ flagship Oxford Street store. Soon, John Lewis will be in the position to offer you a mobile contract, too, under a partnership with Vodafone.

Dedicated spaces where customers can gaze at handsets and talk to Vodafone staff about tariffs will pop up in John Lewis’ Cheadle store in mid-August, and its Oxford Street branch in autumn. It’s the beginnings of the retailer’s “new mobile strategy,” and at a quick glance, its SIM-free phone prices are on par with some of the most competitive online stores. The best thing about buying tech from John Lewis is the extended warranties the retailer typically offers, and thankfully it’s no different here. Any handset purchased online or in-store will include a two-year guarantee as standard, and anyone signing up for a Vodafone contract will receive two years of free accidental damage insurance to boot.

Cockroach-inspired robot can squeeze through tight spaces

University of California Berkeley

Researchers at UC Berkeley have developed a robotic cockroach that can crawl through the tightest of gaps. The team began by studying actual cockroaches, observing how they moved through the densely packed rainforest floor. While some obstacles are pushed past or climbed over, the cockroaches frequently rolled their body at an almost-90-degree angle to scamper through openings. The next step was to fit these real-world ‘roaches with artificial shells and see how this aided or hampered their mobility. The result was perhaps obvious: the less cylindrical the shell, the less effective the insects were at performing the roll manoeuvre.

Observations recorded, the researchers set about fitting a six-legged robot with a rounded shell. With the new exoskeleton in place, the ‘bot was able to traverse a obstacle course in much the same way as the a cockroach would, all without any additional programming or sensors — the new behavior was born simply by rounding off the body. The team hopes to follow up this discovery by searching for other shapes in nature that could improve robots’ ability to advance through difficult terrain.

Apple reverses course of action with artists and Apple Music

Apple has been put through the ringer quite a bit ever since the announcement of Apple Music. After the announcement, reports started popping up stating that Apple would not be paying any artists during the free trial period, of 3 months. That turned a lot of heads, and not in a good way either. Before Ms. Swift got involved, there were other reports from those in the Indie music field. These producers were stating that their music would also not be available due to to non-payment during the first three months of Apple Music.

Then reports started swirling from the always opinionated Taylor Swift in regards to the fact that her latest album ‘1989’ would not be available at the launch of Apple Music. Irregardless of the fact that the rest of her music would still be available, Ms. Swift felt the need to use her latest album as bait, to try and change the minds of the people at Apple.

Apple Music

Her hostage situation in addition to a blog post on her Tumblr, actually prompted Apple to do a 180 and change their course for not just Taylor Swift, but also the Indie artists that would have been affected more than most. While this was a good move by Taylor Swift, it’s still something that shouldn’t have taken place to begin with.

Apple should have recognized the hit that artists would have taken by not getting payment for 3 months, and should have taken this new course of action from the jump. Instead, it seems that Apple has some pie on their collective faces, even after changing their course of actions.

It’s a shame that Apple had to essentially get “called out” before changing their course of action on this matter. Artists should get paid for their work, no matter what. Especially when you have one of the largest companies in the world, with a literal boat load of money sitting in the bank. There’s no excuse to not pay artists for their work, when you want to use and take advantage of their music.

What do you think about Apple’s change of heart? Let us know in the comments below about what you think Apple should have done from the onset, versus going through what’s happened over the course of the last couple weeks.

Qualcomm releases video showing off the super-fast Hybrid auto focus abilities of its Snapdragon processors

SnapDragon (3)

After enduring widespread criticism for its over-heating Snapdragon 810 processors, Qualcomm has come out fighting by releasing a funny video(below) to remind us of some of the positives about its range of silicon. One such positive is that certain Snapdragon processors give super-quick auto-focusing abilities to their host devices.

Qualcomm mention two methods of Auto Focusing; Laser Auto Focus and Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF). PDAF is suited to taking pictures in brighter environments, while Laser Auto Focus is better suited for darker environments. Whereas PDAF uses complex calculations to determine the distance between pixels to achieve a super-fast and precise focus, Laser Auto Focus sends out a series of laser beams that bounce off objects. These returning laser beams return to the sensor at different times depending on the distance of the subject being focussed upon. The snapdragon processor determines the time of travel to the object and back.

Qualcomm says that new Snapdragon processors will combine Laser Auto Focus and PDAF to create a Hybrid technology in which the processor will intelligently switch to the best solution depending on whether it’s a bright or dark environment. PDAF is already present in the Oppo R7 (Snapdragon 615) and LeTV 1 Max (Snapdragon 810) while Laser Auto Focus is present in the Lenovo VIBE Shot (Snapdragon 615).

Don’t forget to watch the video below. It’s unfortunate that the actor had the camera partly covered with his fingers almost the entire time the handset was in his hands.

Get a $100 Galaxy S6 rebate with Samsung ‘Ultimate Upgrade’

samsung galaxy s6 review aa (37 of 45)

There are some pretty good deals around right now if you’re looking to pick-up a Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge. Yesterday T-Mobile announced its free storage upgrade offer and now Samsung has opened up its similar “Ultimate Upgrade” promotion, which offers customers a $100 rebate when then buy a new S6.

The offer applies to any 64GB Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge smartphone purchased from your choice of US carrier or retail location after June 21st. After you have the smartphone in your hands, simply fill out your email address on Samsung’s promotional website and you will be guided through a few steps to submit your receipt, IMEI number, etc in order to claim your $100 back. It’s probably best to make a photocopy of your receipt before you send off.

Why $100 you ask? Well that’s because there is a $100 price difference between the 32GB and 64GB models, so Samsung is essentially giving customers a free upgrade to double their amount of internal memory. It’s a pretty sweet, especially has the handset lacks a microSD card slot for upgrading your memory capacity at a later date.

Should I buy a Galaxy S6?
