LG G4 now has the Guinness World Record for most consecutive selfies taken

lg_g4_selfie_chain

While other manufactures focus on more traditional marketing techniques that only last a short time, LG aims for ones that last forever. LG has just received the Guinness World Record for most consecutive selfies taken. LG got over 2,500 participants in Mexico City for this stunt. The record is for the “longest selfie relay chain” and took over two hours on June 13 in which a total of 746 selfies were taken.

It happened at the historical Chapultepec Castle, which is a National Museum of History. The previous record was with the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 in the US where a total of 531 selfies were taken. To beat this record, the G4 would have to take a photo every 10 seconds during the two hour period.

LG also claims that the G4 was not only able to shatter the previous record, but the G4 did it without needing to be recharged or have it’s battery swapped. They said it still had tons of battery left for more selfies, but they “ran out of people”. A city with almost 9 million people and they couldn’t even find more to participate.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung tries to reclaim the title with their Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in the future. Who knows if the battery will last that long.

LG EARNS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR “WORLD’S LONGEST SELFIE RELAY CHAIN”

LG G4 Plays Key Role in Record for Most Number of Selfies Taken in One Place

SEOUL, June 22, 2015 — LG Electronics earned itself a spot in the record books for the most consecutive selfies taken in one place with the help of over 2,500 participants in Mexico City. With a Guinness World Record official on hand, the “longest selfie relay chain” was set with an LG G4 near historic Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City over a period of two hours on June 13.

The total of 746 individual and group selfies surpassed the previous record of 531 consecutive selfies set in the United States just last month. Guinness World Record official Alex Angert supervised the record attempt and is in the process of validating the record back at Guinness headquarters.

“With one selfie taken approximately every 10 seconds, the LG G4 used for the record attempt managed to go the distance without needing a recharge or a battery swap,” said Daniel Aguilar, who coordinated the event for LG Electronics Mexico. “The G4 still had plenty of juice left but we ran out of people.”

Just under a month ago Google released the Android M developer preview for Nexus devices and for those who want to see what it brings to the table. While it isn’t quite everything it will be when it is officially launched, it brought some great changes to the OS. Now we have the same Android M preview being released by Sony for select Xperia devices. Sony has actually been pretty open about development and have offered an Open Device program for quite some time. When creating a software update/preview build, the manufacturer has to do some leg work when it comes to the chipset, binaries and other critical bits of code for their devices. That is exactly what Sony has done for those eager to check it out, but who don’t own a Nexus device.

For those interested, your first stop needs to be the Open Device program device list to see if your current Xperia device is capable of giving it a run. If it is listed, then you will want to snag the Android M preview build, the binaries for your device and follow Sony’s install guide. If you are sporting a carrier branded device I am fairly certain you are out of luck at the moment as the Open Device program only pertains to unlocked devices. Hit the source link for more information and all the links you will need to get the ball rolling.

New WhatsApp update lets you conduct keyword search through your entire chat history

whatsapp_logo_banner

How many times have you mentally pressed Ctrl+F keys to find an important piece of information in your WhatsApp conversations. Well, it looks like that the Facebook-owned messaging app has decided to make things easier for you, albeit quite discreetly.

The new WhatsApp update for Android (version 2.12.34) that brought Material Design changes to the app wasn’t merely cosmetic. It now lets users perform keyword search through all their conversations.

In previous updates, keyword search was limited to contacts and individual conversations. For example, if you wanted to run a search for the word, “burger,” you would be required to open a particular conversation to find that word. But the new update allows you to simply type the keyword in the search bar, and you can find all conversations featuring that word. Isn’t that a great news?

No Samsung Galaxy Note Edge will be announced this year, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus to blame?

Due to the success of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its dual-curved cousin, the Galaxy S6 Edge, we had assumed that Samsung would be releasing a similarly dual-curved display device at IFA 2015 alongside the inevitable release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. However, a rumour has come out today to say that no Samsung Galaxy Note Edge will be announced this year, which is surprising indeed if true.

That said, the absence of a Note Edge variant in September could very well have to do with the release of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, which has yet to be officially announced by Samsung, but with its rumoured release coming in a matter of weeks, its presence would be a logical reason why a Note Edge variant doesn’t make much sense. For those wondering, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is rumoured to be a 5.7-inch version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. Of course, we have to take this news with the ever-present grain of rice, but really we won’t know what is actually up until September.

dropbox_material_design_1

The very popular cloud storage service Dropbox updated its Android app today bringing an all new Material Design makeover and adds some much anticipated features.

dropbox_material_design_2

One feature many have been asking for is the ability to take a photo in Dropbox and have it instantly add to a folder of your choice. Dropbox has included that and made it simple by clicking the “plus” button inside a folder and having the photo save there right away. Since the photo was taken in Dropbox it instantly uploads to it bypassing the stock gallery app on your phone saving you time and storage space.

You can also find things much faster now. They have included a search icon located in the top menu that can find whatever you are looking for. It can even search for words within a document.

Adding to a better user experience Dropbox has made navigating much easier as well. Just swipe left and right to easily navigate through folders.

Sharing is easier than ever. Sharing controls and file actions like favoriting, moving, and renaming are all in the same place accorss the entire app. It doesn’t matter if you are in a file list, document, or looking at a photo, just head to the info pane to make changes. A more detailed view can also be found there that explains folder locations, edits, and any shared folder members.

Somewhat unlikely: Samsung Galaxy S7 to battle the Apple iPhone 6S in second half of 2015

We rarely like to rule out rumours too early just in case they do actually happen, but this one seems a little ludicrous (although the reasons do hold some water). According to Newsis, Samsung is readying the Samsung Galaxy S7 to battle the Apple iPhone 6S, which is expected to released at the end of September. This would put the Galaxy S7 in the same release timeframe as the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung’s other flagship device, and the idea that these devices would be released together seems unlikely and more of a detriment to Note 5 sales than a benefit, but who really knows.

On the flip side, preparing a flagship device to release alongside, or even before, the Apple iPhone 6S could be a stroke of genius though we wonder what that would genuinely do for Samsung’s market share against Apple’s – it would presumably be detrimental to Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge sales which are on track to reach 45 million. All the same, we’ll have to put this rumours aside until we hear some other news to corroborate it.

Dropbox 3.0 hits the Android world today, and it brings in that new Material Design smell. The update gives the Dropbox app a complete Material Design makeover, and doesn’t really add much more to the functionality.

One of the things you’ll recognize in the update after gawking at the Material Design, is a persistent search button. Some of the other functions have been finely tuned for a better Dropbox experience. Check out the video below and let us know how much you like the update.

AOL is now officially an entity of Verizon

It was slightly surprising when we first heard about Verizon intention to acquire popular media company AOL, but it appears that the deal has not reached its final phase. AOL is now a part of Verizon which will give Old Red all of AOL’s software technologies and its popular media sites; The Huffington Post, Engadget and TechCrunch.

This acquisition did not come cheap, however, as Verizon had to shell out $4.4 billion dollars in order to procure the company, or about $50 a share. This deal should prove to be very beneficial to both companies as AOL has a large media preference and Verizon has a strong leadership team, copious amounts of capital and a powerful presence.

Every day, we connect people, companies and communities with powerful technology, enabling the convenience of mobile services when and where our customers want it. Verizon Wireless. Welcome to connected living.

Verizon

What will occur from here on out however can only be speculation. Will Verizon transform AOL into a powerful, crimson media presence to help promote its brands. Maybe it will sell most of AOL’s assets and keep only the technology used to power its media presence. Perhaps a mixture of both, who knows. What we do know is that both companies are happy with the deal and hopefully it will prove to not only be beneficial to the entities listed but also to consumers.

Instagram AA 11

Instagram users will be happy to know that a big update is being pushed out to both Android and iOS apps today, bringing a couple major enhancements that will help folks find what they’re looking for more easily.

For starters, the app is getting an all-new Explore page that will now surface trends as they emerge in real-time which makes it much easier for users to learn about current events happening in their area and around the world. The Explore page will also feature trending Tags and Places sections, allowing users to see what other people are posting. From Instagram:

In addition, at the top of the Explore page you will find new curated collections that will be updated regularly, featuring interesting accounts and places, from musicians and extreme athletes to stunning architecture and gorgeous beaches.

The updates to Explore will only be available in the United States at launch, but the Instagram team says it will work to expand these features worldwide once all of the bugs are ironed out.
