Humble Mobile Bundle 13 now available with Twisty Hollow, Worms 3 and many more

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 4.03.01 PM

The newest Humble Bundle has just been made available, offering up six great games for one of the lowest prices we’ve seen yet. The titles being offered here today would normally cost around $24 if purchased separately from the Google Play Store, so this is quite the steal.

In case you’re unfamiliar, the Humble Bundle team offers up a handful of great mobile games every other week, and lets users pay basically whatever they’d like. Most of the time the games being offered are quality titles and can range anywhere from $0.99 to $9.99 if purchased on their own from the Play Store. So with that said, let’s take a look at what’s being offered this time around.

If you’d like to pay whatever amount of money you want, you’ll be able to download these three games:

  • Timelines: Assault on America (Premium)
  • The Ministry of Silly Walks
  • Hellraid: The Escape

If you choose to pay more than the average price (currently just $2.88), you’ll unlock these three games:

  • Puzzle Retreat
  • Worms 3
  • Twisty Hollow

All of the games being offered here are DRM-free, and as always, more will be added sometime next week. You can even decide how your purchase is divided between the developers, the Humble Bundle team, and two charities – the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Worldreader. If you’re interested, be sure to head to the source link below.

Apple Won’t Debut Subscription Television Service at WWDC

Apple does not plan to announce its streaming television subscription service at the Worldwide Developers Conference next week, reports Re/code, citing sources with knowledge of Apple’s plans. Apple has informed television network executives that launch will be postponed because the company has not yet signed the necessary deals.

Apple wanted to launch a subscription TV service in early fall to coincide with the start of the new broadcast television season. But the debut got bogged down by negotiations over financial terms and new technology that would be required for broadcasters to deliver local programming to Apple’s Web TV service.

According to industry executives, the television service may not launch until late 2015 or early 2016, as “technology and money issues” continue to be sticking points that have prevented negotiations from being completed. Apple’s desire to provide consumers with local broadcast stations has also reportedly slowed down negotiations as securing all the necessary deals to show local programs and commercials takes a lot of time.

appletv
Rumors have suggested that Apple’s streaming television service will feature approximately 25 channels priced at $30 to $40 per month. It would be available over the Internet and would not require a cable subscription package.

While Apple does not plan to debut its streaming television service at the Worldwide Developers Conference next week, it is rumored to be introducing a new Apple TV set-top box with a full App Store that includes apps and games. It’s also expected to introduce a new streaming music service, a revamped version of iTunes Radio, and OS X 10.11 and iOS 9.

Facebook will encrypt the emails it sends to you with PGP

LISBON - DECEMBER 20, 2013: Photo of Facebook homepage on a monitor screen through a magnifying glass.

Facebook, the social network where there’s no such thing as too much information is handing another olive branch to the privacy crowd. The company has announced that it’ll allow users to add PGP keys to their profiles, enabling them to encrypt the regular missives that the social network sends out. That way, no-one but you will be able to find out that Dave, the bully from junior high, has tried to add you as a friend twice this month. If you’re wary about the legitimacy of Facebook’s project, take comfort from the fact that one of the testers was noted security expert and former Tor lead, Runa Sandvik.

Latest Android distribution numbers have been posted, Lollipop now on over 12% of all devices

Lollipop statue Android Google straight on

Even though it’s been less than a month since Google last posted its Android distribution numbers, it looks like we’re already seeing new numbers coming in for June 2015. The biggest change we’re seeing this time around is that Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop have now made their way to 12.4 percent of all Android devices, up from the 9.7 percent marketshare we saw last month. Although it’s not a big 4 percent increase like we saw from April to May, Lollipop is still steadily climbing to the top of the charts.

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 2.56.15 PM

Android 4.4 KitKat is still the most common build available today, currently running on 39.2 percent of all devices. These numbers are only down a mere .6 percent from last month. Jelly Bean hasn’t seen a massive decline either, coming in at 37.4 percent of all devices, a decline of just 1.8 percent from May. Ice Cream Sandwich is installed on 5.1 percent of devices, down .2 percent from last month. Gingerbread still has a higher install rate than ICS with 5.6 percent, just .1 percent down from last month’s numbers. And yes, Android 2.2 Froyo is still installed on .3 percent of all Android devices.

Since last month, we’ve seen a handful of devices receive the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop including the Motorola Moto G (1st Gen.), the Verizon HTC One M7, the Sprint Galaxy S4, and the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. Are you still stuck on an older version of Android? If so, what device are you using? Let us know in the comment section below!

The Dark Web may be smaller, pervier than previously thought

My Point Of View

Last week, two hackers unleashed an automated scanning tool on the the internet’s deepest layers, known as the Dark Web. This digital underworld is accessible only through the Tor Network and trafficked largely by hackers and criminals looking to avoid the gaze of law enforcement. Hackers Alejandro Caceres and Amanda Towler set their website vulnerability scanning tool, PunkSPIDER, loose on the Dark Web in an effort to improve the semi-anonymizing network’s security but made a surprising discovery: the Dark Web may not be nearly as large as experts estimate.

When PunkSPIDER made its rounds last week, the security tool only found about 7,100 .onion sites in total. Heck it’s entire scan wrapped up in just three hours. “You might notice that’s not a lot of sites. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Memex it’s that the number of Hidden Services [Tor network sites] up at any time has been greatly overestimated,” Caceres explained to Forbes. Out of that number, only about 2,100 responded within a reasonable time. The pair found that, for the most part, these sites are pretty secure. Just 50 had actionable vulnerabilities, though that’s likely due to their largely single-page, static HTML designs.

Of course, being the Dark Web, the pair did find a number of sites offering illegal content including, “a weird subset of child porn,” Caceres said. “After looking through them there is at least one that we’d like to share with law enforcement before releasing it publicly. This is the one case where we actually don’t want the website administrator to fix their site before someone in law enforcement hacks it – trust me, it’s a really bad one.”

MediaTek Blesses Wold with New Helio P10 SoC

MediaTek

SoCs, or System-on-Chips, do what their name suggests: combine all system functions on a single chip. MediaTek has announce a new Helo P10 series chip aimed at the mainstream market, so get ready to break out that soldering iron!

TAIWAN, Hsinchu– June 1, 2015 – MediaTek, a leader in power-efficient, System-on-Chip (SoC) mobile device technology solutions, today announces the launch of the MediaTek Helio™ P10, a high-performance, high-value SoC focused on the growing demand for slim form-factor smart phones that provide premium, flagship features. The Helio P10 showcases a 2 GHz, True Octa-core 64-bit Cortex-A53 CPU and a 700MHz, Dual-core 64-bit Mali-T860 GPU. The Helio P10 will be available Q3 2015 and is expected to be in consumer products in late 2015.

The P10 is the first chip in the new Helio P family, a series which aims to integrate into a high-value chipset, premium features such as high-performance modem technology; the world’s first TrueBright ISP engine for ultra-sensitive RWWB; and, MiraVision™ 2.0, for top-tier display experiences. The features available in the P series include several of MediaTek’s premier technologies, such as WorldMode LTE Cat-6, supporting 2×20 carrier aggregation with 300/50Mbps data speed; MediaTek’s advanced task scheduling algorithm, CorePilot®, which optimizes the P10’s heterogeneous computing architecture by sending workloads to the most suitable computing device – CPU, GPU, or both; and, MediaTek’s Visual Processing Application – Non-contact Heart Rate Monitoring, which uses only a smartphone’s video camera to take a heart rate reading and is as accurate as pulse oximeters/portable ECG monitoring devices.

“The P series will provide OEM smartphone makers with greater design flexibility to meet consumer demands for slim form-factors, which provide dynamic multimedia experiences,” said Jeffrey Ju, Senior Vice President of MediaTek. “The P10 enables state-of-the-art mobile computing and multimedia features all while balancing performance and battery life.”

The Helio P10 is the first product to use TSMC’s 28nm HPC+ process, which allows for reduced processor power consumption. With the help of the latest 28HPC+ process and numerous architecture and circuit design optimizations, the Helio P10 can save up to 30% more power (depending of usage scenarios), compared to existing smartphone SoCs manufactured using the 28 HPC process.

“We are pleased to see MediaTek’s achievement in producing the world’s leading 28HPC+ smartphone chip,” said Dr. BJ Woo, Vice President, Business Development, TSMC. “As an enhanced version of TSMC’s 28HPC process, 28HPC+ promises 15% better speed at fixed power or 50% leakage reduction at the same speed over 28HPC. Through our competitive 28HPC+ technology and process-design collaboration with MediaTek, we believe MediaTek will deliver a series of products which benefit smartphone users across the world.”

As with the entire line of Helio SoCs, the P10 is packed with premium multimedia features. With a concentration on advanced display technologies, premium camera features, and HiFi audio, the P10 delivers leading functionality around the features most used on today’s mobile phones:

  • 21MP premium camera with the world’s first TrueBright ISP engine:

    • Enables ultra-sensitive RWWB sensor to capture twice as much light as traditional RGB sensors in order to retain true color and detail, even in low light. The RWWB sensor also enhances the color resolution, even when compared with RGBW sensors.
    • Other features include a new de-noise/de-mosaic HW, PDAF, video iHDR, dual main camera, less than 200ms shot-to shot delay, and video face beautify.
  • Hi-fidelity, hi-clarity audio achieves 110dB SNR & -95dB THD
  • Full HD display at 60FPS with MediaTek’s suite of MiraVision 2.0 display technologies:
    • UltraDimming – Dimmer background lighting for more comfortable reading, even in low-light situations.
    • BluLight Defender – A built-in blue light filter that saves more power than conventional software applications.
    • Adaptive Picture Quality – Ensures the best picture quality when using different applications. True-to-life colors when in camera preview; vibrant colors when watching videos.

The MediaTek Helio P10 will be released in Q3 2015 and is expected to be available in consumer products in late 2015.

Is Nintendo looking to Android for its next video game console?

nintendo_wii_u_with_controller

There is a possibility that the next video game console released by Nintendo is powered by Android. The upcoming hardware, known internally as NX, would take advantage of the third-party developers support that Google has cultivated with its operating system. Nintendo would also seek to bring together phones, tablets, and other form factors if Android becomes the backbone for its “dedicated gaming system.”

Gaming with Android devices has certainly evolved over time. Just take a look at what the NVIDIA SHIELD set-top box is capable of. It packs the powerful Tegra X1 processor to stream PC-level games to your television. Nintendo may see what NVIDIA is doing and feel that they can capture a new audience with a unique approach.

Nintendo has shipped around 10 million units of the Wii U since being released in late 2011. Two other consoles, from Microsoft and Sony, have managed to match or best that number despite being released an entire year after the Wii U. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 also trounce the Wii U in terms of capabilities and content library. Consumers are looking to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC for serious gaming machines. Now is the time for Nintendo to make changes.

We will see Nintendo’s first title for smartphones later this year with even more to follow by 2017.

The Nintendo NX will not be detailed until 2016, four years after the Wii U launch. The life cycle of a video game console is normally 6-8 years and that would set the NX’s arrival for late 2018 or later.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE getting Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OTA

Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_S_8.4_Main_TA

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE is getting the upgrade to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. It adds yet another device to the small percentage running Lollipop.

Android 5.0 Lollipop brings with it a myriad of awesome changes, mainly with animations, effects, design, and the progressive move towards Material Design. Notifications have been drastically improved, the recent apps menu has been improved, and performance has greatly increased. However, running Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, aside from added features, you may not see a whole lot changes on the design front.

Updates like these do take some time to get to you. So, if you haven’t gotten the notification to download the OTA update, you should see it within a couple of days.

If Samsung keeps this up, maybe we’ll just see Android M on the device this time next year.

lg-g4-submerged-in-water

The LG G4 has many features, but water and dust resistance is not one of those. YouTube user Harris Craycaft decided to put that to the test, submerging the device in 4-inches of water for a two hour period. Will it survive?

Normally when you throw a smartphone or really any device in four inches of water for two hours, they tend to, well, stop working. Will the LG G4 stand up to the test? Find out in the video below.
