In case you’re unfamiliar, Doom puts you in a scientific research facility on Mars, where it’s your job to survive demon attacks after an experiment goes wrong. If you’ve never played any of the Doom games before, you’re in for a treat. Turning all of your lights off and your TV volume up is definitely the best way to experience these games. Seriously, it’s just like a horror movie.

In addition, Doom 3: BFG Edition includes a new chapter called “The Lost Mission”, which brings eight creepy levels and a new storyline to Doom 3. The developers say that this new version also includes an armor-mounted flashlight, so players can illuminate dark passages while shooting demons at the same time.
Since these games aren’t made to work with a touch interface, you’ll need a controller to play. The Nvidia Shield Android TV comes with a gaming controller, but owners of the Shield Tablet will need to pick one up before playing. It should be noted that the game comes in at a hefty 4GB, so make sure you have ample space on your device before clicking the buy button. Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available for $9.99 in the Google Play Store.

System info and one click actions from the Lollipop lock screen using Tasker – Android customization

Last week on our Android customization series, we looked at an app or two that bypasses the removed widgets from your lock screen in Android Lollipop. We brought widgets back by placing them inside of notifications.
While this was happening it occurred to us, why should we spend money on a new app when we’ve already paid for Tasker, which can do nearly the same thing? And so, I give you today, Tasker notifications on your Android Lollipop lock screen.
Before we begin
The obvious requirement today is an Android 5.x Lollipop powered phone or tablet. I know that at least 12% of you have the update already, and more arrive daily. From there, you will also need your very own copy of Tasker. If you’ve been following this series for a while, you probably already have Tasker purchased, if not installed, and if you do not, Tasker can be had for $2.49 in the Google Play Store.
Fair warning, with Google I/O, Lenovo Tech World and Computex all occurring since we met last week, I feel like I did not get the time to bring you great visuals this week, we’ll plow through the steps and get you going, but you may need to employ your own sense of finesse to get the most out of today.
Tasker Notifications
To get Tasker actions onto your lock screen is going to be a little bit easier than you might imagine. Android Lollipop already places notifications onto your lock screen, it is merely a matter of ensuring that your settings allow the notification to show and that we set the notification as permanent so that it remains running for you.
Wouldn’t you know it, we’ve created Tasker notifications in the past, feel free to give that a look, or follow along as we make a crude notification below.
Open Tasker and head to the Tasks tab.
Tap the “+” add button to create a new Task.
Name your Task appropriately. Remember that it should be nice and concise, I’ll break that rule just a little bit and call mine “LockscreenNotification.”

Tap the “+” add button to add an action to your Task.
Select Alert.
Select Notify.
Provide a memorable Title. It does not need to be special, but it will display on your notification and you will need to remember it exactly for later. I’ve given my title as “Tasker on lockscreen“.
Leave Text empty for now, I’ll explain later.
Tap the icon button beside Icon to choose an icon for your notification. This is the image that will show in your notification bar at the top of the screen.
Scroll down and turn on Permanent. You can experiment without this setting, but you will get better results on the lock screen with it turned on.
Finally, tap the “+” add button within Actions to add other Tasker Tasks to this notification. This is where the magic happens, so take your time and choose wisely the maximum three actions per Tasker notification that you want available on your lock screen.
For today, I have chosen two simple convenience actions, then I used the third slot to create a close button for the notification. As follows:
Play music button
First, I created a quick music play button. Audio controls will show on the lock screen once music is playing, but this button will allow me to fire up the music if it is not already going. Just be sure that you have your queue in good order before you go blaring inappropriate tunes.

To create the music play button, tap the Action button on the right. Tap Media. Tap Media Control. Change Next to Toggle Pause. Hit your system Back button to save and exit.
Take a photo button
Second, I created a quick photo button. My phone does not have a fancy gesture or button combination to quickly fire up the camera app, so I will do it with a button here. I have already created a picture taking Task in a previous project, so I simply want to call that Task here, instead of re-creating it.

To call an existing Task, tap the Action button on the right to get started. Tap Tasks. Tap Perform Task. In the Name field, tap the magnifying glass icon to choose a Task from your existing library. My old Task was named QualityPhoto, but you go ahead and choose any previous Task in your list. Then tap the system Back button to save and exit.
Close notification button
My third action is a simple close button for the notification. This is required because I do not always want the notification running, but because I set it to Permanent above, it won’t just swipe away, you’ll need an actual close button.

To create a close button, tap the Action button on the right. Tap Alert. Tap Notify Cancel. In the Title field, you will need to enter exactly the name of your notification, mine was called “Tasker on lockscreen.” It is case sensitive and all that, so I like to turn on the Warn Not Exist option, just for testing purposes. Tap the system Back button once again to save and exit.

Before we leave here, you have the option to add icons to each of the three actions, as well as enter label text. Although these are not required steps, I recommend using at least one of the two, just something to help remember what does what later. Just make sure your labels are as short as possible, they get cut off after just a few characters.
Hit that system Back button to save and exit out of this Action.

You see now your simple Tasker Task to fire up a permanent notification on your device. Go ahead and hit that ‘play’ icon in the bottom left of your screen to give it a go.
You’ll now see your Tasker notification up in the notification bar and when you pull down the notification shade you’ll be able to hit your buttons. This remains true when you next turn on your device, providing this same notification right on your lock screen. Again, I apologize that mine is a little sloppy, please look past that and enjoy the functionality.
What’s next
Of course, you are going to need to provide a way to fire up this notification on your device. You could get clever and create a Tasker Profile that watches for when your display turns on, myself, I’m in a rush and have some space left on one of my Homescreens. I’ve added an icon to my Task and simply dropped a Tasker Task widget that I can click whenever I want the notification to run.
Boom, just like that I have quick access to start my music or take a photo using my Tasker built Quick Photo Task, all without having to unlock the device.

But wait, I have fancy device info showing on my notification. Remember how I told you earlier that I would explain the Text field in the Notification settings? This is what it does for you. Of course, you could just copy my string of text from image way above, including Tasker variables to pull in the device info, or you can get creative and piece together your own string. Just remember that it is just one short line of text, so you’ll again have to choose carefully what little info you wish to see.
The last thing I want to discuss is something I mentioned briefly last week. If the limitations of only three items and just a short snippet of text is not going to cut it for you, you can start combining tools here to make something truly unique and powerful. Simply put, you can embed Tasker Tasks and collected system info into icons and text on a Zooper Widget, and from there you can embed a Zooper Widget into a Notifidgets notification. This allows you to put nearly limitless info and action buttons on your lock screen, if you don’t mind combining three paid apps to get there.
Next week
Man, that got intense at the end, certainly, putting a simple Tasker notification on your lock screen is a good Android customization, but loading up Tasker into Zooper into Notifidgets is a little crazy. Next week I’d like to take a little look at two competing apps that I find crucial to my mobile computing experience, let’s call it a remote desktop app shootout, of sorts.
What do you think, can you live with a simple Tasker notification as a custom info and action tool on your Lollipop lock screen?
Samsung Compares Galaxy S6 Edge to iPhone 6 in New ‘6 > 6’ Campaign
Over the years, one of Samsung’s major advertising tactics has involved comparing its devices to Apple’s iPhones, attempting to point out shortcomings and feature flaws. As of today, Samsung’s published two new videos that pit its Galaxy S6 Edge against the iPhone 6, highlighting the device’s camera, wireless charging, and curved display.
In the first video, Samsung shows off the dual curved edge of the S6 Edge, which can be used to display information like incoming calls and notifications. “Oooh, check out the edge of the Galaxy S6 Edge,” says the voiceover. “It displays colors when your top five contacts call. The edge of the iPhone 6 displays nothing. But it has a vibrate function.”
The second video focuses on the Galaxy S6 Edge’s ability to charge wirelessly when placed on an included inductive charging mat, and it compares the S6 camera to the camera in the iPhone 6. The S6 and S6 Edge come with a front-facing camera that has a 120-degree wide-angle field of view.
Check it out, the S6 takes wider selfies that fit everybody. The iPhone 6… just cut off nana. Nana? When you do the math, it’s clear. 6 is greater than 6.
Each of the videos follows up with Samsung’s new tagline,” 6 > 6,” and they both end with the line “Not all smartphones are created equal.” Samsung has a long history of mocking Apple products and Apple fans in its advertisements and commercials, so these newest anti-iPhone ads come as no surprise.
Since the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Samsung has seen a significant profit drop in its mobile division as some customers opted to switch from Samsung devices to larger-screened Apple devices. Before the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, large screen size was one of the major differentiating factors between the iPhone and the Galaxy line of smartphones, but now Samsung must distinguish its products in other ways.
According to Samsung, demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge has been high, and it expects its profits to increase now that its newest devices have been on the market for a few months.
Sling TV launches a standalone service for Latinos
Last month, Sling TV introduced a couple of channel packs for the Spanish-speaking audience in the US. But now the company’s taking that one step further with Sling Latino, a standalone service for people who are only interested in having access to channels en Español. The main package, called Paquete Total, is $12 per month and features 22 of the most popular networks in Spanish, including Azteca America, Galavisión, beIN Sports en Español, Univision, UniMás, Univision Deportes Network, Univision tlnovelas and many more. That said, there is a cheaper option for just $7: Paquete Esencial, which comes with Azteca America, Cinelatino, beIN Sports en Español, Univision tlnovelas and 12 other channels, although it’s missing most of Univision’s properties.
The Colombia and España Packs, meanwhile, are the same price as the Paquete Esencial, but only feature content from their respective country. Much like the original product, Sling Latino’s expected to offer more channel bundles in the future, and any of these can be combined with Sling TV’s $20-per-month basic package. Sling Latino customers also have the option to purchase two extra streams for $5 monthly, which would come in handy to those who want to watch different things simultaneously across multiple devices.

Google search on iOS now works like it does on Android
Google’s been including contextual search results (links to content from installed apps, not just web pages) for Android users since 2013. Today, iOS users will be able finally be able to do the same. Google recently announced on its Inside Search blog that the company will populate search results with in-app content for both the Google App and Chrome on iOS devices starting this week. So if you tell your iPhone, like in the example below, “I need a reservation at Bombay Cricket Club” Google will return a link to the OpenTable app that takes you directly to the Bombay Cricket Club’s reservation page.

This feature isn’t universal just yet. Initially, Google’s only returning results from a small batch of early partners including Eat24, Free Dictionary, Huffington Post, OpenTable, Pinterest, SeatGeek, Slideshare, Tapatalk, Yellow Pages, YouTube and Zillow. If you don’t have any of these apps yet, don’t worry. Google also announced today that it will begin popping links to apps that you haven’t yet installed but probably should — just like it already does on Android.

Nest press conference scheduled for June 17th, new products inbound?

Google spent a massive $3.2 billion in January 2014 to acquire Nest Labs, the company that creates smart thermostats and smoke detectors. While Nest has only launched two products so far, that may change sometime soon. The company has just sent out invitations for a press event scheduled for Wednesday, June 17th, during which we may get to hear about the first products to come from the company since the big Google acquisition. Unfortunately the invitation doesn’t provide much information on the event, so right now all we can do is speculate.
While Nest has only launched a few products since its inception, the company has still been making headlines over the past year for its numerous big acquisitions. Nest bought security camera startup Dropcam last June for $555 million, then soon after purchased Revolv, the home automation company. Since Nest bought these two companies, we have yet to hear any new product announcements or updates, so perhaps that’s what we’ll see on the 17th.
Like I said before, this is just speculation for now, though it does seem like the right time for Nest to introduce new connected home products. We’ll be sure to let you know what the announcement entails when the 17th rolls around.
Apple Continues Decorating Moscone West for WWDC Ahead of Monday’s Keynote
Each year ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple puts up logos, signs, and banners across Moscone West in San Francisco, where the event is held. Decorations began going up on Tuesday, and work will continue throughout the weekend to prepare for Monday’s keynote event.

As of this afternoon, Apple has finished placing two Apple logos on the outside windows of Moscone West, and yesterday, the first interior banner went up. The initial banner uses the same graphic design elements that are present on the company’s WWDC 2015 website, along with the tagline “The epicenter of change.”

The next interior banners to go up may give us some hints on what we can expect from OS X 10.11 and iOS 9, the two new operating systems that will be unveiled at WWDC. With OS X 10.10, we saw banners depicting Yosemite on the Friday before the event, so tomorrow’s banners could divulge the name for OS X 10.11.
Apple’s trademarked the names of several California landmarks and locations, and some of those names include Redwood, Big Sur, Pacific, Diablo, Miramar, El Cap, Monterey, and Sierra, among others.
We also expect to see iOS 9 banners going up in the near future, but those banners divulge less information because there’s no associated name and Apple will keep signs that highlight upcoming features covered until after the keynote event. Decorations will also be added to sign posts, the Metreon across the street, and other locations as we approach the kickoff of the conference.

Along with details on iOS 9 and OS X 10.11, this year’s keynote event will also see the debut of Apple’s new streaming music service and a revamped version of iTunes Radio. The Apple Watch will be a major focus with the debut of native apps, and we may also see the introduction of a rewards program for Apple Pay.

Early rumors suggested Apple would debut its a new Apple TV set-top box and a new subscription television service at WWDC, but the two products are not ready to launch and will no longer be included in the event. For additional details on what to expect at WWDC, make sure to check out our WWDC roundup and our more in-depth roundups on iOS 9 and OS X 10.11.
High-yield yeast converts 97 percent of a plant to biofuel
The Department of Energy’s BioEnergy Science Center announced a major breakthrough in the biofuel field yesterday: a newly developed strain of yeast capable of producing more than three times the amount of fuel from plant matter as the current record holder. The Center has teamed with Mascoma LLC to develop the new strain, dubbed C5 FUEL. Existing biofuel yeast strains generally only convert about 30 percent of a plant’s sugars and cannot effectively convert tough xylose sugars. C5 however can ferment up to 97 percent of plant sugars into ethanol, including the xylose that other strains can’t break down. What’s more, it does all that in just 48 hours as opposed to the multiple days or weeks that other strains require.

The BESC team presented its findings at the 31st International Fuel Ethanol Workshop in Minneapolis on Thursday morning. They hope that the discovery will help make ethanol-based biofuels more accessible to the consumer market. “Driving down the cost to develop, verify and consolidate bioprocessing was at the heart of the BESC effort when we began in 2007, and this achievement allows us to advance to the next challenge,” BESC Director Paul Gilna said in a statement. “This accomplishment represents a clearly impactful example of how our partnering with industry can accelerate the translation of our research capabilities and findings into commercial products.” Up next, the BESC hopes to perform the same biochemical gymnastics with thermophilic bacteria, which would produce fuel directly from biomass in just one step.
