HTC Desire Eye from AT&T gets Lollipop on June 30

HTC_Desire_Eye_Launch_Event_Front_Facing_Camera_LED_Flash_01_TA

There may not be many Desire Eye owners roaming the country, but June 30 will be an exciting day for them. The device’s exclusive carrier, AT&T, will release a software update that bumps it up to Lollipop.

Mo Versi, the HTC employee who announced the update’s impending release, did not specify the exact version of Lollipop coming to the Desire Eye. So it could be Android 5.0 or 5.1, but we will know for which one tomorrow.

Motorola preparing Android 5.1 Lollipop for the DROID Turbo

motorola_droid_turbo_lollipop_connected

Tonight, Motorola announced that Android 5.1 Lollipop is “coming to a #DroidTurbo near you.” The company issued a tweet on Monday evening that thanked everyone for their patience, likely meaning that a software update with Lollipop is imminent for the Verizon-exclusive device.

Since its launch in October 2013, the DROID turbo has remained stuck on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. People have been waiting more than six months just to see a current version of Android reach the DROID Turbo. We all know that Verizon takes its sweet time with software updates but this long of a wait seems really unfair for consumers.

A soak test for the software update with the DROID Turbo has already begun as select owners are reporting its arrival.

AppleCare for Mac Now Covers Batteries Retaining Less Than 80% Capacity

Just a few days after updating the terms of its AppleCare+ Protection Plan for iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple Watch to cover batteries that retain less than 80% of their original capacity within the extended warranty period, Apple has extended the same policy to the AppleCare Protection Plan for the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro.

AppleCare Mac
Apple previously only replaced defective batteries under the old terms of the AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac, although a support page updated today now outlines that the company will replace a notebook’s battery at no charge if it retains less than 80% of its original capacity. If the Mac is not covered by AppleCare, replacing the battery requires paying an out-of-warranty service charge ranging between $129 and $199.

The new battery terms of the AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac:

“Your Apple One Year Limited Warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. If you purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan for your Mac notebook with a non-removable battery, Apple will replace the notebook battery at no charge if it retains less than 80 percent of its original capacity. If you don’t have coverage, you can have the battery replaced for a fee.”

Mac notebooks with built-in batteries:

  • MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) and later
  • All MacBook Airs
  • All MacBook Pros with Retina display
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) and later; MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and later

AppleCare for Mac extends the computer’s warranty coverage and telephone technical support to three years from the original date of purchase. Without an AppleCare Protection Plan, Mac customers are covered by a limited one-year warranty and 90 days of complimentary phone support. AppleCare for Mac costs between $99 and $349 depending on the model of desktop computer or notebook.

Apple retail staff have been informed of the new policy which is effective immediately.

HTC’s new tablet Desire T7 DS shipped to India for testing

HTC is yet to announce its Desire T7 line, but two variants of the tablet have already reached India for testing, according to Zauba – a website that tracks shipment of mobile devices to and from the country.

One of the variants of the tablet that is listed on Zauba is the HTC Desire T7 DS. Shipped to India on June 26th, the slate features a 7-inch display, a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and and dual SIM card slots as the name suggests. As you can see in the image below, 20 units of this slate have been shipped from Taiwan for testing and each of them costs around $180.

    htc

Earlier in the month, HTC had shipped one unit of the single SIM variant of the HTC Desire T7. Although details on tablet’s launch are still shaky, we can safely say that it will be a while before HTC makes any announcement as the device is still undergoing testing phase. However, it will be interesting to see how the tablet performs upon its arrival as the Taiwanese firm’s flagship phone, the HTC One M9, hasn’t exactly changed its fortune.

Apple Maps minivan spotted in the wild

Earlier this year, a few eagle-eyed folks in the East Bay region in Northern California noticed unmarked minivans with what looked like an array of cameras and sensors sitting on top of it. It turns out that the vehicles were registered to Apple, which sparked a bunch of speculation that the Cupertino firm was deploying its own fleet of mapping vehicles to compete with Google Street View. Well, as was revealed earlier this month, that is certainly the case. In a photo captured by our friends over at Autoblog, a Dodge Caravan with the same sort of camera assembly was spotted with a decal that clearly states “Apple Maps” and “maps.apple.com” on the back window. As the company’s own information page states that it will “blur faces and license plates on collected images prior to publication,” it seems that Apple Maps could very well get its own Street View-esque feature in the future. If you’re interested in spotting these vehicles for yourselves, Apple has posted the schedule of where they’ll be driving around next.

Samsung is launching ‘several’ more Tizen smartphones this year

    Samsung Z1

It’s tempting to think of Tizen as an also-ran in the smartphone world next to powerhouses like Android and iOS, but that’s not entirely true when Samsung has sold 1 million Z1 phones in India since January. In fact, there are now signs that the Korean firm is doubling down on its partly in-house platform: Reuters sources hear that Samsung is planning to release “several” more Tizen phones later this year at a range of prices. While there aren’t more details yet, the move suggests that Samsung is confident that it can expand Tizen’s audience relatively quickly.

There’s certainly a lot of pressure to do that. Samsung has been on less-than-friendly terms with Google because of its sometimes aggressive attempts to build an ecosystem on top of Android. The more Tizen phones Samsung sells, the more it reduces its dependence on someone else’s platform for success — it can promote its own services and stand out in a market where almost everyone else is relying on Google software. You probably won’t be buying a flagship-class Tizen phone any time soon, but it’s evident that Samsung is determined to avoid Bada’s slow fade into obscurity.

New leaked pictures of 2015 Moto G

Moto-G-2015-Leak-backThe 2015 Moto G is soon to be announced sometime this year and we don’t know much about it yet. That changes today because the Moto G (2015) or code name “Osprey”, has had some photos leak out.

The exact hardware is not confirmed, but the rumour is it will ship with a Snapdragon 410 chip, 1GB of RAM and a 5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel display, a 13-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8GB of storage and LTE support.

Moto G 2015 images show up online

    Moto-G-2015-Leak-TechnoBuffalo-4-1280x720

The latter half of the year is almost upon us and that can only mean one thing; some awesome devices are soon to be announced. The rumor mill has started turning and today we are setting our eyes on what will probably be another record-breaker for Motorola – the accessible Moto G, a phone that redefined series that redefined affordable smartphones forever.

Rumors of the new iteration of the 2015 Moto G have started surfacing the past couple months. We saw it quickly peek its head out over at Flipkart’s website, then we managed to get a hold of some images and a video. All that evidence was a bit fuzzy (both in the literal and figurative senses), which is why we are so excited to show you the latest leaked images.

    Moto-G-2015-Leak-TechnoBuffalo-3-1280x720

These are by far the clearest third-generation Moto G photos we have seen. They come in the form of a few press renders and corroborate previous leaks in terms of smartphone design. The 2015 Moto G now has that odd LG-like, silver strip on the back. As opposed to the LG G series, though, this phone seems to implement the design element purely for aesthetic purposes.

Otherwise, the 2015 Moto G seems to incorporate a cleaner look with a simple back and an trim that resembles that of the Nexus 6. The front-facing speakers are still on board on board, which is definitely a plus, and its size is still perfect for one-handed usage.

    /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Sadly, these leaked images don’t come paired with some juicy spec rumors. Previous reports claim the new Moto G will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, a 5-inch 720p screen, a 13 MP camera, a 5 MP front-facing shooter and LTE support.

This phone seems like an awesome upgrade over its previous generation, and the design has been completely revamped. Do you like it? I suppose my opinion will be completely formulated once I learn more about pricing. Hopefully it can stay within that sub-$200 range. We will find out more soon, as the previous iteration hit the market in September of 2014.
