Neutrinos may not be faster than light, but they can shapeshift

Scientists look at the Oscillation Proje

About four years ago, CERN made a claim that sent shockwaves through the scientific community. During the course of an experiment, CERN scientists apparently discovered that neutrinos — tiny subatomic particles that travel near light speed — could possibly accelerate faster than light. That, however, turned out to be an error, apparently due to some faulty testing equipment [Sad trombone]. Why are we talking about this now? Well, scientists have finally completed the experiment’s original goal, which was to see if neutrinos could shift from one type to another (also known as the Oscillation Project with Emulation-tRacking Apparatus (OPERA) experiment). And, well, they can. Between 2008 and 2012, researchers were able to shoot a beam of “muon” type neutrinos through the Earth — traveling a 730 kilometer distance from CERN in Geneva, Switzerland to the Gran Sasso lab in Italy — and found that they had metamorphosed into “tau” type neutrinos on the other side. Just recently, the team uncovered the fifth such “tau” neutrino, thus concluding the experiment. While the study’s result won’t spoil Einstein’s theory of relativity, the discovery is still an important step forward in the world of particle physics.

T-Mobile offers more hotspot data for Unlimited subscribers

Everyone loves free data right? Well T-Mobile has a little treat for those customers who are currently under their Unlimited Data plans. Normally, those who have the Unlimited Data plans have 5GB of data to tether your various devices. However, today, T-Mobile announced that users would gain an additional 2GB of tethering data per month.

This isn’t earth-shattering news, however, it’s definitely nice to see one of the carriers throwing some extra incentives at their customers. Gestures like this are definitely hard to come by without any type of catch. And no, don’t worry, there’s no catch. If you’re already subscribed to one of the unlimited data plans, the 2GB of data will automatically be added to your account so you can tether away.

Just don’t think you can start using your device as a hotspot to play Xbox yet.

Samsung Galaxy S6 receives Material Design theme

Were you one of the many people that rushed to procure a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S6 because you needed to have the next big thing? Or maybe you just wanted a new device and the Samsung Galaxy S6 seemed like the natural choice since everyone either has an iPhone (eww) or a Galaxy device. Whatever the case, you are now the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S6 device and with that comes the obligation to use TouchWiz.

While it is definitely one of the better OEM skins on the market, it still takes away from the awesome, natural look that stock Android has to offer. Thankfully one of the cool new features that are present on the Samsung Galaxy S6 is the ability to change themes without having to download any third-party software or having to root your device. Pair that ability with the recently approved Material Design theme by XDA cambunch and you have something to be excited about. Keeping in line with a stock Android experience, the Material Design theme will almost completely remove every aspect of TouchWiz on your Samsung Galaxy S6 and replace it with Googles latest theme guidelines.

Material Design is meant to mimic the stock Google ROMs where available, and the official GApps elsewhere.

The theme comes in two versions, a dark and light version and will be available in two weeks time, the normal amount of time that it takes Samsung to publish approved themes on their Theme Store. If you are feeling impatient and have rooted your Samsung Galaxy S6, then you can follow these instructions to go ahead and get the theme now. While not everyone is a huge of Google’s latest design guidelines, I think that we can all agree that TouchWiz is not the best when it comes to visual design and at least this Material Theme will give users something different to try out for a few weeks.

Google Developers named as key partner in 2015 Big Android BBQ

The Big Android BBQ is one of the premier places to be for Android fans, and has definitely gotten bigger and bigger as the years have gone by and the event has become more popular. Well the guys at IDEAA, International Developer Education and Advocacy Alliance, have been able to get a pretty big sponsor for this year’s event.

Companies like Cyanogenmod, Facebook, and Android File Host have been just a few of the sponsors of the Big Android BBQ in the past. This year, one of the sponsors for the event are some folks directly from Google. The Google Developers division will be sponsoring the 2015 Big Android BBQ.

This is some huge news for the likes of Aaron Kasten, Corry Robb, and the rest of the group over at IDEAA. The idea (pun intended) behind the Big Android BBQ is to get a slew of like-minded folks in one place to go discuss and experience Android in another way than what Google I/O has to offer.

While geared towards developers, the folks at the Big Android BBQ encourage anyone to come and experience the event in person.

Learn ‘tricks-of-the-trade’ from thought leaders and senior developers in our mouth-watering sessions and get your hands greasy with your newly-acquired skills in the Code Kitchen. End each evening with fellow developers and sponsors at our exciting networking sessions filled with satisfying meals and frosty beverages. The 2015 Big Android BBQ delivered by Google Developers will leave you exhausted and inspired.

While I’ve never personally been to any of the Big Android BBQ’s in the past, I hope to one day be able to head down to Hurst, Texas and experience what the BABBQ has to offer.

If you’re interested in picking your tickets up for the BABBQ, ticket sales have opened and range from $77.87 for the “Value” tickets, all the way up to $5,317.78 for the “BBQ x Package”. With each purchase, there are different tiers of rewards you can get, including a free event t-shirt and a SWAG box.

Even if you aren’t heading down there, head over to the 2015 Big Android BBQ website and check out what the folks from IDEAA are all about and what the even itself is about.

T-Mobile bumps the Mobile HotSpot data to 7GB’s on the unlimited plans

T-Mobile has one of the best mobile price offerings in wireless at the moment. Assuming you only need 2-line of service anyways. For $100 you get unlimited talk, text and data for both lines. When the plan launched users also received 5GB’s of Mobile HotSpot data per-line. Essentially that let you tether your device to your tablet, laptop or anything else for 5GB’s worth of data. If both phones were at your disposal for this use you could feasibly snag 10GB’s of data off your account. The plan is certainly pretty sweet, but now it is getting a little sweeter. The un-carrier is upping its game a little on those unlimited plans, not just the 2-lines, but also the single line variant, and have tossed an additional 2GB’s of Mobile HotSpot data your way.

T-Mobile Unlimited 2GB more

That bumps the total to a pretty sizable 7GB’s of data to use outside of your device. Imagine if you took them up on the LG G PadF 8.0 free tablet offer too. That would give the tablet 5GB’s on its own, and then you could pull another 7GB’s from your phone too. Just tossing out some ideas for ya’ll. Best part, you don’t have to change your plan or call customer care to get the additional data. A spokesperson told fierce Wireless that all active accounts on the unlimited plans have been given the additional data.

“Yes, we’ve enabled Mobile HotSpot benefits on all active data plans,” a T-Mobile spokesman told FierceWireless. “The improvements we’ve made to our data plans make our rate plans even simpler. Now you can use your paid 4G LTE data however you choose–between your smartphone and for other devices with tethering. When you reach your paid data allotment, your speeds will be reduced, not capped, so you never worry about overages.”

T-Mobile Data Mobile Hotspot Increase

I headed into my personal account to check it out and, as you can see above, I have 7GB’s of Mobile HotSpots service available to use at will. So, get to tethering and enjoy the extra data.

Androidify is a great little app that lets you create a custom Android character that is uniquely yours. Your character could end up looking exactly like you, how you wish you looked or how some one in your life looks. It is also a great little app to show the world who you are inside if you choose too. This year Google is going a bit more global in their supporting efforts of the LGBT community by adding in some amazing accessories to the Androidify collection to let you show your support.

Androidify LGBT Pride Parade

To take things up a level, Google also created a hashtag, #andproud, for all to show their support and making sure their Androidify characters get seen during the global Pride parade. If you want to get yourself involved, head over to the official landing page for the global event and create your Androidify character. Be sure to do it before June 27th as the global online parade is June 27th and June 28th. In typical Google fashion though, it doesn’t end with just an #andproud hashtag with a great new Androidify character. Googlers will be hitting the streets at Pride Parades, in Google floats, in San Francisco, New York and London and the some of the best Androidify characters will be flashing across big screens in all three locations.

In other related news, T-Mobile announced their support on June 8th with a list of 22 Pride Parade events that they will be taking part in across the US. On June 20th they will in Denver Colorado, Boise Idaho, Portland Maine, Springfield Missouri and Columbus Ohio. Check the list to see if they are coming, or have been to, your city.

Go get your Pride Droid created at the official landing page and share it with the world!

Twitter reveals Project Lightning in demo

twitter_project_lightning

Twitter has a big, new feature in the works called Project Lightning that is scheduled to be released later this year. The idea behind Project Lightning is to bring event-based curated content to Twitter along with the ability to embed this content around the web. According to Twitter’s Katie Jacobs Stanton, who runs the company’s global media operations,

“the challenge we’ve had over the years is, although we have the world’s greatest content, it’s like having a television without a channel guide or even a remote control. There’s no way to really find it or contextualize that content. So [Project Lightning] is this beautiful vessel for us to surface great content and make it more delightful.”

Stanton will be leading a team of editors who will put together the curated collections at the heart of Project Lightning. The content could be composed of images and videos, including Vines and Periscope videos, to go with tweets. All fo this will be packaged up and accessible via a new button on the Twitter platform. Users will then be able to swipe through this content separate from their timeline. One of the benefits Twitter thinks the collections will afford users is the ability to access tweets without having to follow a user they may not otherwise be interested in following.

Analysts watching the company will likely see this as a way for Twitter to bring new users to the service. Twitter says Project Lightning has been in the works for a long time and is not in response to any pressure from Wall Street.

According to outgoing CEO Dick Costolo, the long-term goal of the project is to open it up to other organizations to be able to build their own collections. Until then, Twitter hopes to produce seven to ten collections per day to plant the seeds of interest for users.

Nokia CEO says the company will design and license phones again

Nokia Lumia 925

When a deal with Microsoft allows it to do so in 2016, Nokia plans to design and license phones again. In what comes as no surprise, the company’s CEO told Manager Magazin that it would look for interested parties to release the devices when the time comes. “We will look for suitable partners,” said CEO Rajeev Suri in an interview. “We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license.” Nokia sold its devices and services business to Microsoft last year, but it can begin to license mobile gadgets to other companies next year. If you’ll recall, it already released the familiar-looking N1 tablet in China post-acquisition. Of course, Nokia still owns its Here mapping tech, which has reportedly drawn interest from automakers and transportation companies like Uber. While the devices may carry Nokia’s aesthetics, keep in mind that the Lumia, Asha and X brands all belong to Microsoft. A company would pay Nokia for the design work and rights to use the name, but those recognizable labels are off limits.
